Miguel Delivers One Of His Most Raw Records Yet With “Always Time”

Los Angeles, California singer, songwriter, and producer, Miguel, has become one of R&B’s more elusive faces. Throughout the 2010s, he was dropping records with fair consistency. However, since 2017’s War & Leisure, he’s been a recluse. He’s helped out with other artist’s singles. But solo wise, Miguel has remained pretty silent for the most part. A return could be near though, as he’s been teasing a new album over the last year, Viscera. It’s still very much in limbo, as a release date remains hidden. Potential releases that could make the cut include 2023’s “Give It To Me” and “Number 9” with Lil Yachty.

You could throw “Always Time” in there now as well, which Miguel just dropped this weekend. Over his illustrious and underrated career, the “Sure Thing” artist has proven to be unpredictable. On “Always Time,” he’s wailing over a haunting acoustic instrumental about letting go of a past lover. However, it’s clear that this relationship meant a lot to him. Miguel has spoken very candidly about this single, saying, “This may be the most difficult song I’ve ever had to write — for all of the life lessons and experiences that live between each line,” he began. However, it seems that this song needed to be written, and its ideas had to be spread to release that pent up pain for Miguel. “I’m grateful for the closure it has given me and know it’s the most honest way to begin this chapter of my artistry and relationship with my audience.” Overall, it’s a terrific display of vocal range, rawness, and vulnerability, and this next of his era should be special.

Jessie Reyez And Big Sean Bring Quiet Menace On “Shut Up” Single

Jessie Reyez is an emotive singer. She puts her all into everything she sings, whether it be heartbreak on “Forever” or sex on “Jeans.” There’s a tension and electricity that she brings to the table as an artist, and it’s led to her landing massive collaborations with the likes of Miguel, 6LACK and most notably, Eminem. Jessie Reyez decided to change things up on her new single, though. Instead of leaning into her emotive vocals, the turns down the melodrama and dishes out a slick, minimal track that’s menacing as it is cool. It helps that Reyez brings another Detroit rapper, Big Sean, into the mix.

“Shut Up” may sound like the title to a loud, aggressive song, but it’s anything but. The instrumental is punctuated by hard bass hints and creeping strings that switch before the background and foreground. Jessie Reyez never reaches into her higher register. She adopts a whispery, menacing flow that’s closer to rapping than actual singing, and it works. It suits the callous lyrics like a glove. “Phone full of options, bank full of bills,” she raps. “Don’t do it ’cause I need to, I do it for the thrill.” The verses follow suit, with talk of ex-boyfriends and put downs aimed at unnamed enemies. “Know your ex watchin’, know they see me locked in,” she adds. “Came from a different angle (What?), I can’t be boxed in. B*tch, better read the room like you telepromptin’.”

Jessie Reyez Changes Her Style Up And It Works

Big Sean brings the energy while still matching menacing vibe. He’s become one of the more reliable names in hip-hop when it comes to pop-rap guest features, and he delivers yet again. The Detroit MC drops some clever bars about Batman and Robin, exes who tried to kiss and make up, and the general bragging one would expect from the guy who made Finally Famous. “Old school, pair of gold chain, goin’ Rakim,” he raps. “Batman, black man, billionaire but ain’t nobody robbin’. I tell a bad b*tch to her face that she grounded.” “Shut Up” isn’t going to be a smash hit or anything, but it’s a catchy song worth checking out.

What are your thoughts on “Shut Up” by Jessie Reyez and Big Sean? Do you like Reyez’s break from her usual sound? Do you want to hear more of it on her next album? Does Sean’s verse deliver? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to leave your takes in the comments section. Quotable Lyrics:

And tell her she on punishment ’til further announcement
She know that I’m daddy, I never been stingy with allowance
Baby girl, good ain’t good enough, be astoundin’
Half the time she need a man, other half counsellin’
Baby, when you hit the top, gotta stay grounded

One aspect of Mandi’s life that has garnered significant attention is her relationship with Grammy-winning singer Miguel. The former couple went on their first date in 2005. Miguel, 19 at the time, had just signed his first record deal and was recording the music video for “Getcha Hands Up.” On the other hand, the 18-year-old Nazanin was meant to interview him for a behind-the-scenes promotional DVD.

The pair got engaged in January 2016 and subsequently got married two years later in November 2018. However, although marriage may have hinted at some form of stability between the two, they separated in September 2021. Their reconciliation in February 2022 would go on to be their last, as Nazanin filed for divorce in October of the same year, citing irreconcilable differences.

School performances and local talent shows marked the first stage of Miguel’s journey into the music industry. By age 15, he had already signed a production deal, but the path to success was not immediate. Years of struggle and perseverance preceded his breakthrough. Beyond the romance, Miguel’s passion for social justice has led him to become an advocate for several causes, including mental health awareness and immigration rights. Further, his style is also worth noting, with fashion choices often creating as much buzz as his music. Miguel’s unique aesthetic adds another layer to his persona, whether at awards shows or casual outings.

Miguel Announced His New Album ‘Viscera’ With A Neon Video For ‘Give It To Me’

It has been over six years since the release of Miguel’s last album, War & Leisure. Since then, the California singer has shared a handful of EPs, featured on a few hit singles, and seen the resurgence of a fan favorite via TikTok, but it appears it’s at last time for him to put out a new full-length LP.

Miguel announced his new album, Viscera, with a moody video for its first official single, “Give It To Me.” The sparse beat is matched with equally sparse visuals, which mainly consist of neon-lit shots of Miguel and his leading lady showing off their physiques and intimately embracing as the camera swirls around them.

In the months leading up to this release, Miguel also shared two other songs in very different ways. The first, “Number 9” with Lil Yachty (who has truly been everywhere lately), had a very traditional release with a trippy visualizer. The other, “Rope,” had a less standard release. Miguel debuted that song with a performance piece that found him suspended in the air by literal ropes stuck into his back with hooks. Given the title of his new album, perhaps we should expect to see more viscera on display before it receives its official release, which is “soon” according to a press release.

In addition to these songs, Miguel also popped up on Jesse Reyez’s new single “Jeans” and its sexy, sultry music video. Check out the video for “Give It To Me” above.
