Ari Lennox, Noname, Mereba Announces for AFROPUNK Live: Minneapolis

l

Planet AFROPUNK Live: Minneapolis, the first-ever AFROPUNK live experience in the Midwest, has announced its roster. On the second day, the live experience will shift to a celebration of life, music, food, and culture, which will begin with a series of panel discussions aimed at exploring the connection between art and activism and promoting community healing. Planet AFROPUNK Live: Minneapolis takes place on June 18th and 19th, with performances by Ari Lennox, Noname, Mereba, Sango, Dreamer Isioma, Pink Siifu, and some of the best rising acts in the Twin Cities. There will be panels and events all over the city on June 18th, and performances in Sheridan Memorial Park on June 19th.

Minneapolis has a long history as a Midwest center for music and culture. Prince, the prominent figure of a vibrant culture memorialized in his song “Uptown,” was born in the city, as were funk colossuses like Jam & Lewis, Morris Day, and many others. Planet AFROPUNK Presents: Planet AFROPUNK Presents: Planet AFROPU Minneapolis intends to honor and promote the city’s vibrant community of Black creators and activists, as well as to recognize and support a community still grieving from heartbreaking loss. The people of Minneapolis stand up in the face of oppression, and AFROPUNK is dedicated to producing a joyful and celebratory event while also addressing and fostering discourse about the community’s issues.

In connection with the live performance, AFROPUNK announces a collaboration with High School For Recording Arts, a local high school known as “Hip Hop High” and formed by former Prince band member David T.C. Ellis to nurture the next generation of musical talent. During the first day, students from the school will have the opportunity to present panels and showcase their abilities at a special showcase.

Fans Are Going To Miss The Music Of ‘Insecure’ As Much As The Show Itself

One of the highlights of Issa Rae’s hit HBO show Insecure was always the soundtrack, curated by Issa herself and featuring some of hip-hop and R&B’s rising stars. Fans reveled in both hearing longtime faves and getting put onto newcomers with every episode, with the show’s team sharing each episode’s tracklist as part of a growing playlist on streaming services. On Sunday night, the series finale aired, bringing the show to a close that fans are still discussing and debating on Twitter.

And while the touching finale may have sparked diverging opinions on the resolution of its lead character’s complicated love life, one thing many fans seem to agree on is that the music helped make the show. Scrolling through the “Insecure” trending topic on Twitter, you’re just as likely to see messages praising the show’s musical curation as you are ones debating various plot points throughout its five-season run.

Many of the artists featured on the soundtrack also chimed in with both praise and thanks for Issa Rae’s fan-favorite series, which many say helped introduce them to new audiences — a sentiment that fans echoed wholeheartedly. Issa herself, who always live-tweets the show right along with fans, offering background information from the writer’s room and her inspirations for the show’s setting, plot, and its plethora of jokes, even noted how some of the finale’s songs found their way into touching pivotal scenes.

Mereba Celebrates A Limitless Love In The Sun-Drenched ‘Rider’ Video

After contributing to the group success of Spillage Village’s spiritual 2020 album Spilligion, mystic crooner Mereba is preparing for the release of her EP AZEB. Today, she released the video for the lead single, “Rider,” in which she describes the search for a limitless but meaningful love — someone who will be there through thick and thin, ie., a “rider.” The video is a sun-washed representation of such a love, with couples dancing in the desert as Mereba sings before a picturesque sunset.

Although Mereba is likely still best known for her contributions to Spillage Village songs like “Hapi” and her recent appearance on Reason’s “Westside,” she’s a more than accomplished artist in her own right. Her 2019 debut album The Jungle Is The Only Way Out was hailed by those in the know, and with R&B’s increased prominence in the pop culture landscape, it’s only a matter of time until she receives commensurate notice for her solo talents.

In a recent interview with Vince Staples, with whom she collaborated on the Queen & Slim soundtrack song “Yo Love,” she described the process of recording the upcoming EP:

It’s called Azeb, which is my middle name, and the name that my father called me. It’s an Ethiopian name… People passing through a town or village and asking, “How do I get to this region of Ethiopia?”—they’ll use the word “azeb” and point to a place in the sky. I felt as I was writing songs last year that they were helping me figure out and sort through the things I was feeling about what was happening in the world. They started being my guide. I was also inspired by Nina Simone, who said, “It’s an artist’s duty to reflect the times.” I always end up putting current events, or things that are happening in the world, into my music. But this project also encompasses the more universal parts of human existence, like being in love and being hopeful in the midst of whatever else is going on, because that’s a survival tactic, to have hope and faith that things are going to get better.
