Matthew Perry Update: Multiple Arrests Made In Connection With Death Investigation

Law enforcement said Thursday morning that they charged multiple people in connection with the accidental overdose death of actor Matthew Perry. Perry, 54, was found face down in the pool at his Pacific Palisades home on Oct. 28, 2023. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office attributed his death, in part, to the acute effects of ketamine. Authorities in Southern California arrested at least one person early Thursday. Later in the day, federal prosecutors will reportedly unseal an indictment that details the allegations against that individual. The indictment will also name others.

Ketamine has been a popular party drug for decades. In recent years, it has shown potential as an alternative treatment for depression. A growing number of clinics offer it as an infusion or injection for a wide variety of mental health problems. Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat depression and anxiety. However, his last session took place more than a week prior to his death.

Arrests Made In Connection To Matthew Perry Death

The levels of ketamine in Matthew Perry’s body were high, equivalent to the amount used for general anesthesia during surgery. The coroner ultimately ruled his death an accident, citing other factors outside of the ketamine in his system. Contributing factors also included drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a synthetic opioid used to treat opioid addiction.

Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on Friends, had been open about his struggles with substance abuse. He detailed his struggles in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.” At the time of his death, he had been clean for over a year and a half. Perry’s death is not the first time that law enforcement has investigated drug-related celebrity deaths. Michael Jackson’s private physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. He provided the singer with a fatal dose of powerful drugs in 2009. In 2022, a California court sentenced a drug dealer to 17.5 years in prison for his involvement in Mac Miller’s death. Law enforcement have not yet revealed the arrested man’s name, nor have they set a court date.

Matthew Perry Cause Of Death Revealed

Matthew Perry died as a result of the “acute effects of ketamine”, according to a toxicology report obtained by TMZ. Perry had been receiving ketamine treatment for his anxiety and depression. However, the toxicologist believes Perry had ingested a recreational dose of the drug prior to his death due to its short half-life. Per the medical examiner’s report, the ketamine caused cardiac overstimulation and respiratory depression, leading to Perry’s death.

Perry was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his California residence on October 28. Drowning was listed as a contributing factor in the medical examiner’s report. Friends were shocked to hear of the actor’s death, stating that he had “never been happier” in the days leading up to his death. Furthermore, the medical examiner found no evidence of drugs such as PCP, fentanyl, or cocaine in Perry’s system. However, another contributing factor was the effects of buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is used in addiction recovery.

Following his death, sources within the LAPD told TMZ that a preliminary search of Perry’s home did not find any evidence of illegal drugs. However, officers did find prescribed anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and drugs prescribed to treat chronic lung conditions. A toxicology report will determine if Perry had any drugs in his system at the time of his death. Perry’s body was later removed from his home and taken into police custody.

Perry was best known as sarcastic funnyman Chandler Bing in F.R.I.E.N.D.S., which graced TV screens for a decade in the 90s and early 2000s. He would largely step away from acting as the 2000s wore on. However, he did have major roles in Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, Go On, and The Odd Couple. He would also appear as a minor antagonist in Fallout: New Vegas and act alongside Zac Efron in 17 Again. However, Perry’s life was also marred by struggles with addiction and battles with mental health issues. He openly spoke about an addiction to diet pills during the early years of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. He also smoked throughout his life, leading to a number of surgeries and chronic lung conditions.

Remembering Matthew Perry, The “Friends” Icon

Having lived a life of constant ups and downs, Matthew Perry experienced early hardships, and as a result, he developed a strong desire to help those who faced similar struggles. His transformation from a young man in a small town to a popular sitcom star is proof of his tenacity and the value of being open and honest.

On October 28th, 2023, Matthew Perry was pronounced dead at 54 years old after an apparent drowning. As we remember Matthew Perry for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, it’s imperative that we look beyond on-screen performances and delve into the inspiration we could find in his story. Perry was someone who overcame personal challenges and left a lasting impact outside of the entertainment industry.

Perry began his acting journey by enrolling at the Buckley School, a college-preparatory institution in Sherman Oaks. Graduating in 1987, he initially took on small roles, starting with television and later transitioning into film. His first significant role was in the 1988 movie A Night In The Life Of Jimmy Reardon. Perry also ventured into sitcoms, like Second Chance, which Fox later revamped as Boys Will Be Boys.

In 1994, Matthew Perry’s career took a drastic turn for the better. He took on the role of Chandler Bing in Friends from 1994 to 2004. The popular sitcom had a 10-season run that captured the everyday life, hysterical circumstances, and personas of six close-knit friends in New York City. The character, Chandler Bing, was a somewhat socially awkward individual, yet a witty and endearing professional in his 30s. His portrayal of Chandler propelled him into the limelight and transformed him into a cultural icon.

In 1996, he won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Friends and a TV Guide Award. However, he continued to excel in Hollywood after Friends ended. Movies like The Whole Nine Yards highlighted his comedic and acting skills, while Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip showcased his dramatic range.

Perry recounted a period in his life when he had reached a staggering low of 128 pounds and was consuming over 50 Vicodin pills daily. His battle with addiction led to severe health complications, including pancreatitis, which necessitated hospitalization. The extensive ordeal he faced with alcohol addiction and substance abuse has been the subject of his candid discussions in previous interviews and his book, Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing.

His struggle with alcohol and pharmaceuticals prompted him to seek rehabilitation more than a dozen times and endure a minimum of 14 surgeries, significantly impacting his acting career. By the time the 10th season of Friends rolled around, for example, his addiction became a detrimental issue, prompting the network to address him about it. He acknowledged initially having some control over it, but this wasn’t entirely true, as it continued to influence his life.

Matthew Perry founded the Perry House in Malibu, a sober-living residence for men in recovery, which operated for two years before his passing. Additionally, Perry contributed to charitable causes, such as donating proceeds from a Friends-inspired clothing line to the WHO’s COVID-19 relief fund.

Mathew Perry’s Legacy

Most people will always remember him for his role as Chandler Bing from Friends. But in an interview, he once said that he hoped to be recognized for his work supporting those who were addicted, rather than his career as an actor in the sitcom. Altogether, Perry’s life served as an example of the human spirit’s ability to succeed and persevere in the face of difficulty. So to do it all in public … was difficult.
