Master P and Romeo Miller’s Online Exchange Highlights Five Important Needs to Advance Mental Health Discussions

au

Romeo Miller and his father, Master P, have spent the last few days in a public exchange of words provoked by Master P’s comment regarding mental health and the passing of Stephen “tWitch” Boss. Over the weekend, Romeo called out his father for ignoring his sister’s mental health issues but speaking out on the struggles of Stephen “tWitch” Boss. Tytyana Miller passed away in May of fentanyl intoxication at 29.

Romeo wrote on Friday, “Today was a boiling point. I seen a man avoid his own children struggle with suicide and depression but post another man whom passed today that he doesn’t even know. Yall idols be lost. Better stop following the blind. Watch when it’s revealed.”

Following a string of interactions between the father and son about a poem titled The Tree of Trauma, Master P wrote, “This new generation of kids need to stop blaming their parents for everything. How do they think they got to where they are without their parents making sacrifices for them? Mental illness is real and so many families are tragically affected by it especially when there is added trauma like death of a loved one. Son, I love you. Stop trying to get people to feel sorry for you. And let’s come up with a solution. You can come talk to your father and your family, like a man, you have kids too. No family is perfect but together with God, we can heal and get through this.”

This situation embarks upon a larger issue that waits to be embraced by conversation. The Master P and Romeo exchange is just one example of many referencing the discernable progress of the mental health discussion. There are five takeaways this situation sheds light on.

For one, as a community, we need to start normalizing conversations about mental health. A certain taboo comes with addressing one’s mental health openly. It is normal to see a doctor for the flu or a broken leg, but when it comes to depression or anxiety, acceptance fades.

With this understanding, a second takeaway is defined. Seeking professional help or therapy is not a weakness but a strength. The roles we play in life are never easy and require great tenacity. Trying to carry out these responsibilities often takes the place of prioritizing self-health. This spans mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. The ability to harness vulnerability as a superpower and ask for help can be the first step in healing.

Thirdly, family businesses require careful planning, transparency, and communication. Navigating relationships within the family is complex, even before adding the business component. Working within the family can interwar normal dynamics and lead to stunting the growth of traditional relationship trajectories. Adding child artists, money, and fame into the mix means that open communication is not suggested; it is detrimental. No matter how close we are to others, we all wear masks, and we never know where the underlying darkness resides in someone.

To expand on this thought, what you see on the outside, especially on social media, is not always what is going on inside. Social media is a highlight reel of life’s good and exciting moments. Very rarely does it capture the nuances of everyday life: stress, sadness, grief, etc. This can lead to a comparison of lifestyles that don’t even exist. Illusions are all over the internet and can subtract clarity from self-perception, conversations, and reality.

The fifth takeaway is that we must check on family members and loved ones. Mental illness is usually a quiet battle. Having people to share with is a gift—check in on others even when everything seems okay. Friendship is the comfort of knowing you aren’t, even when you feel alone.

Snoop Dogg Says Death Row Broke His Spirit & Tried To Kill Him

Well before he was hosting Puppy Bowls with Martha Stewart, Snoop Dogg helped propel Death Row into hip-hop’s premium label. However, his time on Death Row wasn’t necessarily the smoothest. Between cross-country feuds and Suge Knight’s hostility, Snoop’s leap to No Limit in the late 90s was a crucial move that undoubtedly saved his career and his life.

During his recent appearance on 85 South Show, Snoop Dogg reflected on working with Master P following a tumultuous time at Death Row. Snoop said that Master P ran the program differently compared to Suge Knight, who owned everything that the Doggystyle rapper had.

“They was soldiers, for real. Organized. Structured,” he explained. “Them n***as didn’t play, and P was serious about his business…”

Snoop explained Master P showed him a different side of music industry during his early time with the label. However, C-Murder and Soulja Slim were still bringing him to the projects, despite Master P telling them not to.

“I’m violating but then I’m listening then I’m watching how they not listening then I said, ‘I’m not going to be a bad student. I’ma stop doing what they doing,’” Snoop said.

Though P put Snoop to work, he also provided opportunities to own property and get his money up. Snoop said that P told him he’d get paid for every album he appeared on until eventually, he brought the West Coast rapper to a gated community to purchase a house of his own and a car from the dealership. Snoop revealed it was the first time owning anything under his own name.

“This was the first time shit was in my name. Everything was in Suge Knight’s name,” he said.

Karlous Miller noted how Snoop was humble to have gone from a Death Row star to starting from the ground up on No Limit. “That was real humble of you just to — ’cause you was already Snoop Dogg,” Miller said.

“But I wasn’t,” Snoop responded. “My spirit wasn’t that. See that’s what you gotta understand. N***as broke my spirit. Thet broke me, man. They broke my spirit. Look, Doggystyle, workin’ on Doggfather, win my murder case, Dre leaves, Tupac get killed, Suge going to jail, Death Row want to kill me. That’s all in the same year.”

On this date in 2000, West Coast rap giant Snoop Dogg released his fifth full-length studio album entitled The Last Meal, which was released on Master P’s Dirty South, independent powerhouse, No Limit Records, as well as the first album on Snoop’s Doggystyle Records. This album was released during the “dog days” of Death Row, with Snoop and Dre parting ways with their former boss and label owner Suge Knight. The album was leaked on the internet on December 1, 2000, by Suge Knight who made all tracks downloadable in MP3 from the official site of his and Snoop Dogg’s former company Death Row Records, which featured links to tracks from both Tha Last Meal and Dead Man Walkin’ albums, asking visitors to “take The Snoop Dogg Challenge” and decide “song for song” which is the better album.

There was some heavy production on the album, with tracks primarily from Dr. Dre and Master P, adding Timbaland and Soopafly to the unique flavor of this project as well. The most recognizable track from the album was “Lay Low” a melodic track featuring Butch Cassidy, The Outsidaz with Nate Dogg singing the hook and Dr. Dre behind the boards, capturing that original G-funk sound of the 213.

Salute to Snoop, Master P, Dre and the entire No Limit/Death Row teams who helps mold this timeless classic!

Snoop Loopz No More: Snoop Dogg And Master P’s Cereal Officially Has A New Name

Snoop Dogg and Master P had been faced with some legal pressure about the name of their rap-centric cereal, Snoop Loopz. The brand is set to debut soon, but a name change had to be in order before the official launch of the breakfast food via Snoop and Master P’s company, Broadus Foods.

“So they don’t want us to use Snoop Loopz on our cereal box even though that’s that’s my name,” Snoop Dogg wrote on Instagram last week. “We’ve built a national brand and disrupted the cereal industry, we did it with hard work and integrity. I know they’re uncomfortable and scared. But our mission is to build diversity and economic empowerment.” Adding that, “It’s official we’re taking over the breakfast foods industry. They can’t stop us. It’s David versus Goliath. Master P and I got the slingshot. This is a minor setback for a major comeback.”

Now the decision has been made. The cereal line will forever be known as simply “Snoop Cereal” and it currently features three individual cereal flavors. They made the announcement in a YouTube clip and the Doggfather emphatically said “They can’t take that from me!”

The video is like an unboxing for their line of cereal like the new Frosted Drizzlers, Fruity Hoopz with Marshmallows, and Cinnamon Toasteez. Master P touted they are the “first Black-owned cereal company that’s nationwide and able to reach families everywhere.” He also said, “I wanna let y’all know that this is healthy, cause everyone keeps saying ‘make some healthy cereals!’” Before Snoop added, “We gonna look out for you. You wanna be healthy? We gonna make it healthy for you.”
