Yesterday (November 17), Tyler The Creator’s beloved music festival Camp Flog Gnaw kicked off its 10th anniversary. While the 2024 Camp Flog Gnaw lineup featured many of the “Sticky” rapper’s collaborators. But one musical figure and frequent performer was terribly missed—Mac Miller.

But Mac was present in spirit. Between Sampha and Alchemist & Friends’ set at 2024 Camp Flog Gnaw, a video teaser featuring Mac Miller’s previously leaked track “5 Dollar Pony Rides” played across the screens (viewable here).

As the clip ends, the displays flash the word “soon.” Given that the track has long since circulated online and is a feature record on Mac Miller’s long-lost album, Balloonerism. Supporters are jumping for joy as the series of songs were supposedly recorded between 2013 and 2014.

In a now-delete post (viewable here) from E. Dan of ID Labs spoke about the mythical project. “[Mac] did make an actual track list (a few actually) and pretty much all of the songs you all know as ‘Balloonerism’ were made inside of a week stemming from what was basically jam sessions,” he wrote. “He did indeed move on from it, took a few of the songs for ‘Faces’ and never got back to it.”

He then addressed the fans rumors surrounding the project, writing: “Some of the artwork and the track lists you see for this online aren’t from Mac. They are made up. The project itself was a real thing in so far as Mac made a few iTunes playlists about it, but it never got finished.”

Producer Madlib has also teased that he has a posthumous joint project with Mac Miller in the tuck.

On this date in 2004, MF DOOM dropped his fifth full-length studio release MM..FOOD. Put out on the underground Rhymesayers Entertainment label, some songs from the project were previously released under the name Madvillian on another label. The album featured classic samples from several superhero cartoons including the Fantastic Four, Spiderman and Superman.

The album featured production mainly from DOOM himself, with Count Bass D and Madlib on the help out on just two tracks on the 15 track project. Some of the standout tracks include “Hoe Cakes”, “Guinnesses”, which featured Tennessee born/ATL bred femcee Empress StaHHr and 4ize, and the kaleidoscopic “Fig Leaf Bi-Carbonate.”

Salute to DOOM and everyone involved with this timeless album!

Madlib Sues Former Manager Egon For Alleged Mismanagement And Financial Impropriety

Legendary producer Madlib filed a lawsuit against former manager Egon on October 31, the four-year anniversary of MF DOOM’s death. He chose the date to honor DOOM, whose family is currently in a legal battle of their own with Egon. In a complaint, Madlib accused Egon of several inappropriate business practices. The practices include allegedly mismanaging his finances, abusing his power by “taking a fee off the top” from money generated by his recorded music and locking him out of several “key music business platforms” like Apple Music, YouTube, BandCamp, Instagram and Facebook.

Madlib signed to Stones Throw Records and released his first single with the label, “Microphone Mathematics,” in 1999. Egon was working there as an executive. He became the general manager of Stones Throw in 2000, remaining in that role for the next decade. After Madlib left and Egon was fired, Madlib brought him on as his manager. They started Madlib Invazion in 2010, which is where the majority of his work has been released since. Additionally, they started Madicine Show and Rappcats.

Madlib Sues Former Manager Egon Over Mishandled Funds

Because of Egon’s alleged mishandling of Madlib’s finances, the legendary Oxnard-based producer is seeking compensatory damages, including attorney fees. As the complaint explained, Madlib “desires a declaration from the Court determining that none of the Defendants owns or has any continuing right or interest in the above and that he has lawfully terminated any rights he may have granted therein to any of the Defendants. Such declaration is necessary and appropriate at this time to confirm and protect Madlib’s interest in his creative work and the goodwill associated with his professional career, as well as his name and likeness, and so that Madlib may ascertain the rights and duties of the parties relating thereto.”

In October 2023, MF DOOM’s widow, Jasmine Dumile Thompson, filed a lawsuit of her own against Egon. Thompson’s suit alleged that the former family friend stole 31 of the iconic rapper’s notebooks. Those bookers were used to write some of his most well-known songs, including music from Operation DoomsdayMadvillainyMM…FOOD. The books also included unreleased song ideas and “other creative ideations.” Madlib’s suit is the latest piece of what has been a lengthy falling out between Egon and the families of his two closest collaborators in hip-hop.

Why Is Madlib Suing His Former Manager Egon?

Yesterday, Billboard reported that veteran underground rap producer Madlib had filed a lawsuit against his former manager, Eothen Alapatt — better known to rap fans as Egon of Stones Throw Records. According to Madlib’s lawsuit, Egon used his role as an executive at Stones Throw to self-deal, claiming profits for himself that were otherwise due to Madlib.

Madlib allegedly trusted Egon to set up two entities: Madicine Show, which would handle Madlib’s musical interests, and Rapp Cats, which would manage sales of Madlib’s merchandise. The producer says that he recently learned that Egon was abusing his privileged position by skimming profits for himself, either hiding accounts or providing false accounts of his work to Madlib about his compensation, and not giving written agreements to his business partner.

In another example of his alleged mismanagement, Egon supposedly secured a single lawyer and accountant to represent both partners in the two enterprises, then instructed them not to work with Madlib and only deal with him, even after Madlib secured new representation of his own. After reviewing accounts from 2018-2022, Madlib says his new team found irregularities and lack of hard copy that amounted to “several hundred thousand dollars” listed as “‘consulting,’ ‘commissions,’ ‘fees’ or ‘reimbursements’” for Egon.

‘Lib also accused Egon of locking him out of his digital accounts for services like Apple Music, Bandcamp, and Ingrooves, allowing Egon to take half of the producer’s royalties. Madlib’s complaint says he “demanded that Madicine Show and Rapp Cats be wound up and dissolved,” and that Egon instead told Madlib to buy him out.

Egon was also sued last year by the widow of the late MF DOOM, whose Madvillainy album with Madlib was put out through Stones Throw during Egon’s time there. Jasmine Dumile claimed Egon refused to return DOOM’s rhyme books, insisting on donating them to a digital archive rather than keep them secret as DOOM intended. Egon has derided that claim as “baseless and libelous” through his attorneys, but has yet to respond to Madlib’s newly filed suit.

Consequence Claims Kanye West And Kendrick Lamar Have An Unreleased Collab Album

Consequence has been part of Kanye West’s inner-circle since day one. He appeared on Ye’s first two albums, and has penned verses for the rapper into the present. If anybody has insight into how Ye goes about recording, it would be him. Consequence talked about Ye’s relationship with Kendrick Lamar in a recent interview with Bootleg Kev. During said interview, the rapper claimed that Ye and Lamar have an album’s worth of material sitting on the shelf.

Consequence told the podcaster that Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar are sitting on an estimated 40 songs together. Some of which are allegedly produced by Madlib. The reason they have yet to see the light of day? Consequence believes its simply a matter of setting aside the time to structure an album. “I just think it just needed to be structured,” he asserted. The rapper claimed to have heard every song that was recorded, though, and he was impressed. “It was there, it’s there, it’s crazy,” he noted. “It’s there.”

Consequence Claims To Have Heard 40 Songs

Consequence’s discussion of a Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar joint album is more of a confirmation than a revelation. It’s exciting to know that songs between the two legends exist, but Ye actually spilled the beans on his Lamar collabs back in 2016. The “Carnival” rapper tweeted that he’d been in the studio with Compton’s finest and Young Thug during the making of The Life of Pablo. “Me and Kendrick got 40 songs and me and Young Thug got 40 songs,” he wrote. “40/40 club!!!” Kendrick Lamar and Thugger did appear on The Life of Pablo, lending credibility to Ye’s claim.

The only official collaboration between Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar to date came out of these 2016 sessions. “No More Parties In L.A.” was a head-spinning lyrical showcase for both rappers. It also had an exceptional Madlib beat, which lines up with what Consequence said about the producer’s involvement. Ye seems to be in an increasingly healthier headspace as of late. Here’s hoping he decides to let some of these K. Dot collabs out of the vault.

Meanwhile, Super7 continues putting out classic hip-hop figures, such as these Outkast action figures, so check out more at their website.

Madlib Teases New Collab Album With Freddie Gibbs: “Montana Next Up”

Madlib has one of the varied careers in all of hip-hop. He’s so versatile, in fact, that much of his music doesn’t even fit within the genre’s constraints. The thing that makes him a hall of fame producer, though, is his ability to bring the best out of rappers. Madvillainy is considered by many to be the high water mark for MF Doom, and the same goes for Pinata and Freddie Gibbs. Madlib knows how to make them sound immaculate, which is why fans are so excited for his reunion with the latter.

Madlib’s eccentric production and Freddie Gibbs’ gruff delivery has made magic twice over. Pinata and Bandana are as critically acclaimed as hip-hop albums can be. Pinata, in particular, is so celebrated that the duo recently put on shows to commemorate its tenth anniversary. Madlib and Gibbs (aka MadGibbs) were at New York City’s Rooftop on May 11, and they took the opportunity to drop a bombshell on those who were attending. The short and long of it is that MadGibbs has another album in the works. The title will follow the single word ending in “A” template of the first two.

Madlib Confirmed “Montana” Will Drop In 2024

Madlib was the one who made the official announcement. At first it seemed like he was just hyping up the crowd, but he was actually hyping up Montana. “Y’all ready for Freddie Gibbs?,” he asked the crowd. ‘[I’m] about to drop this live sh*t on y’all. Montana up next.” The producer didn’t offer a release date, but given how quickly him and Gibbs work, fans won’t have to wait long. It’s been five years since the release of Bandana, and in that time, both artists have dropped multiple albums.

The confirmation of Montana is great news for Gibbs fans, in particular. The rapper has spoken at length about the impact that Madlib has had on his music. He told GQ that he was initially reluctant to spit over such wild production, but it’s made him better. “It definitely made me a better lyricist because I didn’t really want to rap on those kinds of beats,” he noted. “I was like, alright, this is about to be the basis of all of this sh*t. Because it sounded like some Wu-Tang sh*t.” We hope the new album is more of the same.

Producer Madlib celebrated a big milestone this past weekend. On Saturday (May 11) at a 10th anniversary celebration of his album Piñata, which featured raps by Freddie Gibbs. The celebration took place at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.

During the celebration, Madlib spun some tunes and dropped some beats. Freddie Gibbs was set to come to the stage. But before he performed, Madlib teased some new music with his frequent collaborator.

“Y’all ready for Freddie Gibbs?,” Madlib asked the crowd, who responded with cheers. Madlib continued, promising the crowd “[I’m] About to drop this live sh*t on y’all. Montana up next.”

Though neither Madlib nor Gibbs indicated an official release date for Montana, fans are waiting with bated breath.

Montana will mark Madlib and Gibbs’ third full-length album together, their first being 2014’s Piñata and their second being 2019’s Bandana. The duo releases music under the stage name, MadGibbs.

In addition to these two — soon to be three — albums, Madlib and Gibbs have also released five EPs together — 2011’s Thuggin’, 2012’s Shame, 2013’s Deeper, 2014’s Knicks (Remix), and 2020’s The Diamond Mine Sessions, with El Michels Affair.

You can see a clip from the Piñata 10th anniversary show above.
