Today in Hip Hop History, Lil’ Kim released her debut album Hard Core on November 12, 1996. The Brooklyn-born pint-sized rapper changed the course of hip hop.  Before Megan Thee Stallion bounced in a thong and before Nicki Minaj wore the colorful wigs— there was Lil Kim. Her album Hard Core album showed women in a different light compared to what we had seen from veterans like MC Late and Queen Latifah.  Lil Kim unabashedly spoke on her sex life and what she demanded from any man trying to court her. From her fashions to her hair to her aggressive rap style, she ushered women into the 2000s with sexy confidence we hadn’t seen before.

“No Time” quickly became an anthem and girls everywhere initiated Lil Kim as the Queen. There was an unforgettable promo poster released that stirred up a conversation and was plastered all over New York City. She and her crew Junior Mafia became one of the biggest groups in Hip hop led by the late great Notorious B.I.G.   Today we salute Lil Kim for a classic album, that still knocks to this day. Check out some of our favorites of the album Hardcore.

Lil Kim Recalls Her Friendship With Rich Homie Quan In Touching Tribute

Rich Homie Quan had lots of friends in the music industry. The rapper was well-liked, and had iconic collaborations with the likes of Migos and Young Thug. One friendship that was less known, however, was between Quan and Lil Kim. The two never officially collaborated on a song, and the only time they were onstage together there was controversy. Despite this, Quan and Lil Kim had a bond that stretched multiple years. The latter was devastated by Rich Homie Quan’s passing, and decided to open up about their friendship on Instagram.

Lil Kim posted a series of photos and videos the evening of September 5. The photos included her and Quan at a party together, and drinking champagne together in the back of a limo. There was also footage of the aforementioned live performance they did in 2016. Lil Kim’s caption was supremely heartfelt, and let fans in on how much Quan’s death has affected her. “This is the part of life that I’ll never get used to,” she wrote. “I’m so heartbroken. No one ever understood the dope ass friendship u and I had.”

Lil Kim then praised Rich Homie Quan for always being supportive and available to hang out. “U always pulled up for me no matter what,” the rapper noted. “I’ve learned in life love those who love you. Rest in Heaven my angel @richhomiequan.” The friendship between the two artists dates back to the 2016 BET Awards. Lil Kim invited Quan onstage to perform the Junior M.A.F.I.A. classic “Get Money.” Quan took on Biggie’s verse, and proceeded to flub the lyrics. He rapped “play Nintendo with Cease at Alamo” instead of the original: “play Nintendo with Cease and Nino.”

Rich Homie Quan felt bad about the flub, but Lil Kim encouraged him to recover and keep performing. Quan proceeded to issue an apology after the ceremony. “I will forever be sorry,” he wrote. “I hope you can accept my apology. To Lil Kim, Thank you for the opportunity.” Despite the unfortunate flub, Lil Kim and Rich Homie Quan connected on a deep level. It’s clear from her Instagram tribute that Kim chooses to celebrate the good times they had instead.

TodayinHipHopHistory:JuniorMafiaReleasesTheirDebutAlbum'ConspiracyTheory'YearsAgo

On this date in 1995, the hometown crew of Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls, which was composed of Lil’ Kim, Lil’ Cease, Nino Brown, Chico Del Vec, Kleptomaniac, Capone, Bugsy and Trife and Larceny of The Snakes, who called themselves Junior Mafia, dropped their first album entitled Conspiracy Theory on the Undeas/Atlantic imprint.

With Biggie being one of the first East Coast artists to put his homies on from his Bed-Stuy block, Conspiracy Theory served up a suffix of hits featuring the “King Of NY,” which helped to further catapult his stardom, but introduce an entire crew of microphone astute Brooklyn kids that launched an entire movement of their own. JM also introduced a female emcee from BK that would forever change the landscape of Hip-Hop for women; Lil’ Kim.

Some of the sure shot singles from this monumental project include “Player’s Anthem” featuring Notorious B.I.G. and Lil’ Kim, “I Need You Tonight” featuring Biggie’s then-wife Faith Evans and of course the anthemic “Get Money”.

Salute to Junior Mafia, Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim, “Un” Rivera and the entire Junior Mafia squad for dropping this eternal Hip-Hop classic!

Akbar V Claps Back At Latto For Not Naming Nicki Minaj As The GOAT Woman Rapper

Akbar V is speaking up for former onetime collaborator Nicki Minaj, arguing that she is the greatest female rapper of all time after Latto dubbed Lil’ Kim as the true G.O.A.T. The Love & Hip-Hop alum and rapper took to X/Twitter Wednesday to respond to Latto’s claim that the Brooklyn rapper is the most impactful woman in hip-hop history.

Minaj and Latto have been feuding since 2022, after a war of words that began when Minaj interpreted a tweet from Latto as a subliminal shot. They have not engaged with each other publicly since a lengthy back-and-forth. The public aspect of their beef all but ended when Latto mentioned that Minaj’s husband is a registered sex offender. Fans interpreted Latto ranking Kim over Minaj as an intentional slight. Kim and Minaj also feuded publicly at the beginning of the latter’s career. Akbar V appears to be one of those people.

Akbar V Responds To Latto’s Claim That Lil Kim Is The GOAT Female MC

Latto first dubbed Lil Kim as the greatest during her Complex conversation with sister Brooklyn Nicole, where she first referred to herself as the greatest before recognizing the “Crush On You” rhymer’s impact. “But like, the GOAT is Lil Kim, for sure. Fashion icon, timeless music, timeless looks, gon’ forever be a staple, in not only rap, but female rap. And she the GOAT because she is a queen for real, like, off camera, she a queen […]I love her, and she ‘Big Mama,’ too. It’s just a ‘Big Momma thang,’” referencing both Kim’s track of the same name, as well her own song, “Big Mama.” Akbar V, like many Nicki Minaj fans, disagreed, and wanted her perspective to be known.

While Latto recognizes Kim as the number one female rapper, she acknowledged Minaj back in April when she named the Queens MC in her top 3, though she refused to say her name. “Gotta say Kim,” Latto told Atlanta’s Hot 107.9 radio station when asked about her favorite female rappers. “Imma say Left Eye, rest in peace Left Eye. And shawty,” which fans quickly interpreted as a reference to Nicki Minaj. Latto’s a Lil Kim fan, even though it is possible that some part of her consistent praise is digging at a former friend and musical influence.

Missy Elliott Shocks Fans By Bringing Out Lil Kim During Show: Watch

Missy Elliott is still rocking. The legendary rapper has been headlining the first solo tour of her career, and it’s gone fantastic. Fans have been impressed by Elliott’s stage presence and energy this far into her career. On Monday, though, the rapper decided to share the spotlight. Missy Elliott brought out Lil Kim on the Brooklyn leg of her tour, and the reception was rapturous. Fans were thrilled to see two iconic female emcees share the stage together. Especially since Elliott and Kim rarely crossed paths in the last couple years.

Lil Kim came out and performed her 2003 hit “The Jump Off” before a screaming crowd. Then, her and Missy Elliott joined forces to rap their 1997 collab “Not Tonight (Ladies Night).” It was a special moment, especially given Kim’s status as a Brooklyn icon. Missy Elliott and Lil Kim may have very different styles on paper, but the two rappers collaborated frequently during the 90s and 2000s. Missy Elliott helped to write Lil Kim’s 2001 smash “Lady Marmalade.” The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Kim and company a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Missy Elliott And Lil Kim Have Been Friends For Decades

Missy Elliott and Lil Kim’s personal lives have taken priority in recent years. The latter told Entertainment Tonight that the birth of her son slowed her musical output in the mid-2000s. That said, Kim made sure to give Elliott some love. “I’m just really excited to see my friends. Missy Elliott is my sister,” she gushed. “She’s a long-term friend and just someone that I love dearly.” The last time Kim and Elliott appeared on a song together was the remix to the 2017 single “I’m Better.” The remix also featured verses from Trina and Eve.

The love goes both ways. Missy Elliott told VH1 that she was an enormous fan of Lil Kim’s music, and knows several lyrics by heart. “Like, I know every lyric, cos you hear people sing with conviction – she rapped with conviction,” Elliott asserted. “You believe every word she said […] She’s such a sweetheart, but she could knock if you buck if it gets down… Before me and Kim are friends, I’m a fan.” You can see the chemistry between these two rappers throughout the years, and it’s still obvious on stage. Fingers crossed these two will link up for a new song in the near future.

Latto Labeling Lil’ Kim The G.O.A.T. Of Female MCs Has Nicki Minaj Fans In An Uproar

If you don’t plan on giving Nicki Minaj credit for what she’s done for the hip-hop world, then prepare for the backlash. The Barbz are striking back once again after Latto’s recent claim that Lil’ Kim is indeed the G.O.A.T. of female rappers. In a recent chat with her sister on Complex, she was doing a Q&A following the release of her new studio LP, Sugar Honey Iced Tea. One of the question cards read, “Who is the GOAT female rapper?”, and before really answering the question she dubbed herself the best ever.

“Big Mama”, she replied. Her sister also agreed “not even being biased”. After moving past the self-confidence, Latto decided to give Lil’ Kim her flowers. She cites her timeless music and fashion as the main reasons. Additionally, perhaps in a subliminal manner, Latto thinks she’s the best due to her being such “a queen”.

As we said, Nicki Minaj fans are always going to defend their queen, and they are definitely letting Latto hear it. They are not feeling her answer, mostly because its coming across as fake. The Atlanta MC is one of the many ladies not on good terms with the Trinidadian superstar, so they feel she’s saying someone else on purpose. “I know Kim tired of these rap girlies showing her love AFTER their fallout with Nicki😩🥴😭 if you miss being a barb just say that🤭”, one user expresses. “Mind u latto never once say lil Kim when she was coming into the industry it was always Nicki Nicki Nicki!!!”, another adds.

What are your thoughts on Latto claiming that Lil’ Kim is the greatest female rapper of all time? Do you think she’s just saying this because of the disconnect between her and Nicki Minaj? Who would you say is the best femcee of all time and why? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. On Monday (August 12) Missy Elliott‘s career-spanning Out Of This World Tour reached Brooklyn, New York’s Barclays Center, and to commemorate her stop in hip-hop’s motherland, Missy surprised fans with one of their hometown heroes, a fellow pioneering woman in hip-hop: Lil Kim. Kim joined Missy onstage to perform a pair of her biggest hits: “The Jumpoff” and “Not Tonight (Ladies Night),” the latter of which featured Missy when it dropped in 1997.

Missy’s got just another 10 days of tour left, including dates in Detroit, Montreal, Toronto, and Chicago, but she’s already left a mark on the fans who’ve attended — and the ones who missed out. While the enterprising Virginia native hasn’t suggested that there’s any new music on the horizon, fans will undoubtedly want to hear more from her after this tour, and after recent releases from Flyana Boss, Brent Faiyaz, and Cardi B either featured or sampled Missy’s futuristic works.

Lil Kim, meanwhile, is currently promoting her upcoming memoir, Queen Bee, boasting late last year that it’s going to generate more sales than the Bible.

You can see below for the remaining dates on Missy Elliott’s Out Of This World Tour.

Antonio Brown Thirsts Over Angel Reese Despite Lil Kim Makeout Session

Antonio Brown is highly regarded as one of the best wide receivers to ever play in the NFL. However, his career ultimately ended on bad terms. In fact, his reputation is so cooked that his spot in the Hall of Fame is in question. Overall, it does not seem like AB actually cares that much. Instead, he says what he thinks. Moreover, he has allegedly sold off his Twitter account to someone who is making crass memes and homophobic remarks on his behalf. It’s all very strange, and her personal life is even weirder.

For instance, we reported yesterday how AB was spotted in the club making out with Lil Kim. This came as a huge surprise to many and has been front-page news on the gossip pages. However, over on Twitter, AB has been thirsting for Angel Reese. After an image of Reese went viral on Twitter, AB (or his account manager) looked to capitalize with a video of a dog humping the air. It’s all very bizarre and shows the disconnect between AB’s real life and his new Twitter persona.

Happy 50th Birthday To The “Queen Bee” Lil Kim!

Lil Kim on Unity: "You Don't Come in the Game Disrespecting Your Idols"

Born on this date in 1974, Bedford-Stuyvesant native Lil’ Kim has certainly paved the way for female rappers to gain traction in a highly male-dominated world of hip-hop. Making her name, sound, and style notorious (no pun intended) in her appearance on Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s debut album, Conspiracy.

Backed by hardcore lyrics filled with provocative and liberating content, Kim’s attitude and determination broke down gender barriers (which female rappers currently still face) that excelled her respect in the game.

Kim’s resume includes many Hip Hop greats, timeless tracks, fashion moments, and jaw-dropping lyrics. As the musical heiress of the Notorious B.I.G. legacy, Kim has continued to rep the memory of “the greatest rapper of all time”, even naming her sophomore 2000 release Notorious K.I.M.

Morphing from a femcee from Bed Stuy into the iconic figure she is today is a trail that has only been traced by the likes of Cardi B, Megan The Stallion and today’s entire female rap roster. They all have to salute the Queen B.

The Source Magazine sends a supreme 50th born day shout to the Queen on her Birthday!!
