On this date in 1994, crew members Wyclef Jean, Pras, and a young, talented Lauryn Hill otherwise known as The Fugees formulated their first album entitled Blunted On Reality on Hip Hop indie imprint Ruffhouse Records.

Not as familiar to Hip Hop heads as their follow-up smash sophomore album The Score, Blunted On Reality did not receive the commercial success their first go around, yielding only 12,000 copies sold in the first two years. After the release of The Score, that number jumped to 125K.

With Clef’s hands in every aspect of production, there were very few times when the Haitian national wasn’t behind the boards during the production of this album. Other producers include Salaam Remi, Brand X, Khallis Bayyan and even Pras.

Salute to the trio for bringing us this slept on classic!

Angela Yee Was “Good Friends” With Lauryn Hill In High School

In a recent interview, Ice Spice told XXL that New York breeds plenty of stars, and Angela Yee is proving that to be true. Hip Hop was first birthed in the Big Apple decades ago, launching a culture that has permeated all aspects of the entertainment industry worldwide. Several famous figures’ lives are intertwined—some are related, while others once attended school together.

Not many people know this little bit of history, but Yee revealed that she and Lauryn Hill were classmates. Yee’s new radio show, Way Up With Yee, premiered today (January 17) and will go nationwide on January 30. She told Page Six she’d like to reunite with Hill on the series.

“I would love for her to be [a guest] because she does not do interviews, and also because I [have] met her before,” she said. “We went to high school together.”

The two stars reportedly attended Columbia High School, and hill transferred in when her family moved to New Jersey.

“She was a good friend of mine back then, and we’ve never had a chance to have a sit down,” Yee shared. “I just think that she has had longevity in this game.” She also revealed a little-known fact about The Fugees hitmaker.

“People don’t understand she was the captain of the cheerleading team,” said Yee. “Lauryn was always popping, so I feel like it would be a really fun conversation.”

While we wait on a response from Hill, Yee continues to promote her new show. After 13 years with The Breakfast Club, it was time for a new era for the famed host. Yee’s podcast, Lip Service, also dominates in the pop culture arena. It will be interesting to see how she progresses with Way Up.

Today in Hip Hop History: Lauryn Hill Dropped Her Solo Debut Album ‘The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill’ 24 Years Ago

Screen Shot 2022 08 24 at 9.46.18 PM

On this date in 1998, after her successful intro into the game with The Fugees, Lauryn Hill embarked on her solo journey and released her first solo LP entitled The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill on the Ruffhouse/Columbia imprint.

As a play on the titles of Carter G. Woodson’s The Mis-Education of the Negro and the 1972 film The Education Of Sonny Carson, Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation album fused the sounds of neo-soul, reggae, R&B and Hip Hop to create an album unlike anything similar to that which was created during the “bling” era. The 16 track classic was a mainstream hit, mainly because of the cross over appeal of singles like “Everything Is Everything”, “Doo Wop(That Thing}”, Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” and “Ex-Factor”, with production courtesy of Ms, Hill herself.

Supreme shout out to Ms, Hill for this timeless piece of Hip Hop history!
