Killer Mike Says JAY-Z Planned to Bring Him on Stage While Receiving Dr. Dre Award

Killer Mike Says JAY-Z Planned to Bring Him on Stage While Receiving Dr. Dre Award

Killer Mike says his Grammy night was supposed to be even more epic than it was. In case you missed it, Mike was arrested after sweeping the rap categories at the 2023 show.

Mike pulled up to The Breakfast Club and revealed that JAY-Z would give his stage time to the Michael creator.

“When I was going through my thing, Jay was hitting me like, ‘Hold on, stick around. I want to toast you,’” Killer Mike said. “And then, he hit me later, saying, ‘I was gonna concede my time to you.’”

You can hear it from Mike below.

Killer Mike recently graced The Late Show With Stephen Colbert with a powerful performance of his track “Exit 9,” accompanied by his backing choir, The Midnight Revival. The rendition culminated in an intimate acapella verse, showcasing the exceptional vocal talents of the ensemble.

This performance follows Mike’s recent appearance on The View, where he delved into his remarkable Grammy sweep. The acclaimed artist swept all three major rap categories at the Grammys, securing wins for Best Rap Album with MICHAEL and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for his track “SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS,” featuring Future, André 3000, and Eryn Allen Kane.

Killer Mike Wasn’t Surprised By Kai Cenat’s Reaction To His Grammy Wins: ‘I Didn’t Know Who The F*ck You Was, Neither!’

The Killer Mike Grammy drama continues. For some background, there’ve been a few outspoken folks with very large platforms who were disappointed to learn that Mike swept the rap category (more or less) at this year’s Grammys, beating out some… shall we say, “more popular” candidates like Drake and Travis Scott.

Their opinions prompted very cranky reactions from their elders (does Joe Budden have any other kind?) but during his media victory tour, Mike seemed undaunted by the less-than-friendly reception to his win from younger rap fans, even joking on the Breakfast Club that he was really familiar with their game, either.

During his appearance on The Breakfast Club, Mike joked that he made a lot of money selling brooms online to celebrate his sweep, crediting their popularity to the kids’ complaints. “Shout out to the streamers and the youth,” he said. “Y’all done taught me a lot. I know my man Kai [Cenat] was upset… Hey, man, I didn’t know who the f*ck you was, neither!”

The jovial Mike then amiably requested an appearance on the 22-year-old’s stream, pointing out that Cenat has had Offset, another Atlanta rapper and a common ally between them, on in the past. “I ain’t hatin’ on none of y’all,” Mike said. “I ain’t on no n****s. I wanna see you win. I wanna see you happy.” He showed appreciation for Travis Scott, but showed the competitive spirit that has driven hip-hop for the past 50 years. “I will rap a motha*fcka under the table.”

Killer Mike Joked That He And His Wife ‘Need A Third,’ And He Thinks Taylor Swift Fits The Bill

When a microphone gets in front of Killer Mike, the result is either going to be really great (his Grammy Award-winning album >Michael) or make anyone listening want to groan aloud in horror. His latest stint on The Daily Show falls into the latter category — at least, it does for me — and I think we should maybe consider restricting his engagement with live mics to him rapping on them and nothing else.

While Mike reflected on his Grammy wins, host Jordan Klepper asked him a jokey question about another award show fixture, Taylor Swift, wondering if Swift “snubbed Celine [Dion].” The minor controversy found fans nitpicking Swift for not properly acknowledging the Canadian diva, who presented her the award for Album Of The Year (despite her Stiff Person Syndrome diagnosis). Unfortunately, Mike took it left almost immediately, praising her for winning the award, then jokingly propositioning the “Anti-Hero” singer.

“She won at the Grammys,” he noted. “Her boyfriend won the Chiefs. If she’s into poly, me and my wife need a third. We’re trying to win again.”

Yikes, Mike.

Klepper did his best to mitigate the off-color joke, asking, “You feel like you could pull off polygamy right now?” prompting Mike to reel it in a bit. “I feel I could pull it off,” he said. “Only problem is my wife’s good with a gun. She doesn’t agree. But I’ll keep trying for all the men out there.”

Hey, man. That sounds like a YOU problem. Don’t do anything for all the men. My name’s Bennett and I ain’t in it. I’m sure the Swifties will be nice about this when they find out. It’s not like there isn’t already a wildly problematic history of rappers saying gross things about their leader.

Killer Mike Doesn’t Seem To Mind Getting Handcuffed At The Grammys: ‘All Of My Heroes Have Been In Handcuffs’

The 2024 Grammys turned out to be a big night for rap Killer Mike. In addition to winning all three awards for which he was nominated — to the dismay of Gen Z streamers who missed out on the greatness of “A.D.I.D.A.S.” in 2003 — he was unfortunately handcuffed and detained for several hours on a misdemeanor battery charge before being released to finally celebrate his wins.

Appearing on The View on Monday (February 12), Mike explained what happened that led to his arrest and how he felt about it. According to Mike, ““Backstage was overcrowded, the winners were exuberant, and I think security got a little overzealous.” This is what led to his confrontation with a security guard, who was knocked over in the confusion.

Comparing himself to some of his Civil Rights Movement inspirations, he said, “All of my heroes have been in handcuffs: Malcolm [X], Martin [Luther King Jr.], [Nelson] Mandela, Medgar [Evers, an activist who was the NAACP’s first field secretary in Mississippi and was assassinated by white supremacists for his liberation work]. I walked out with the same dignity and respect that I walked in with, and I would implore people to just take that from it.”

However, he did feel there was one “dope” aspect to the situation. “I walked out to my wife in the rain,” he said. “It was like a romance movie. It was dope.”

Killer Mike Discloses That “MICHAEL” Is Part One Of An Album Trilogy

While there is a large crowd of people who are happy for Killer Mike cleaning up at the 66th GRAMMY Awards last weekend, a lot are still upset. Streaming sensation Kai Cenat is one of those younger music fans in that camp. But, at the end of the day, Mike did submit a great album to the Recording Academy and it was deserving of the praise. He brought the brooms out, taking all three categories he was in. While the Atlanta legend is surely still celebrating to some degree, the Run The Jewels member is hungry for a trilogy.

Yes, you heard that correctly, Killer Mike is turning MICHAEL from a stand-alone record to a three-part series. This news was revealed to Apple Music 1’s panel at their Super Bowl LVIII setup in Las Vegas. According to HipHopDX, causally mentioned this trilogy plan to the hosts and they were noticeably stunned. For now, this all the information we have but it is exciting, to say the least.

He starts by saying, “The first album we got to kinda take the nine-year-old to where I’ve grown into as an adult, but I wanna cut deeper. There’s deeper levels to go, you know.” Mike continues, “We already plotting out what the next one’s gonna be, me and Cuz Lightyear were in the studio with Mike WiLL [Made-It] the next night. And we working. I just wanna work and produce works of art that’s gonna live long after I’m gone. So I can’t do that celebrating this too long. The celebration is fun, but after this, when I get back to Atlanta, I’ll be working.” While Killer Mike was vague about the trilogy we know he will deliver.

What are your thoughts on Killer Mike revealing MICHAEL is now going to be the first album in a trilogy? Is this Mike’s best album to date and is it still in your rotation? Killer Mike, E 40, Diplo, Hit-Boy and Big Hit join Apple Music 1 live from Las Vegas to talk about all things USHER and Super Bowl.

In a wide-ranging conversation, Killer Mike talks about his recent GRAMMY wins, the support he’s received from his peers, his admiration for Big Boi, his circuitous route to success, his advice for the younger generation, and how he wants his next album to be his best yet.

When speaking on Usher and celebrating Atlanta, the Grammy Award winner said, “I’m proud. In Atlanta, we proud of each other. Like Usher hit me, Jeezy hit me, Tip hit me…congratulating me. And I’m the same way. Whether it was his residency or the Super Bowl halftime or the tour afterwards, my wifey danced with him. Dance, dance damn it. Dance with him.”

He went on to say, “I’m happy because Atlanta is a city where it celebrates culture and creativity. It especially celebrates Black culture and creativity. So if you want opportunity, man, it’s a great place to be because people going to be cheering for you. It doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy, doesn’t mean it’s not a journey. But you’re going to have some people cheering for you.”

Then, Diplo drops by the studio to talk about working with USHER on the newly-Platinum record “Climax,” his experience with Apple Vision Pro, the Las Vegas musical landscape, and how maintaining a balanced lifestyle helped him to not burn out during his aggressive touring years.

Hit-Boy and his father Big Hit stop into the studio to talk about what it’s been like to work together since Big Hit’s recent release from prison, and Bay area legend E 40 discusses his love for the 49ers, recognizing Kendrick Lamar’s talent when he was just starting out, what Hip Hop 50 means to him, and USHER’s talent.

Joe Budden Begs Kai Cenat And Streaming ‘F*ckity F*cks’ To ‘Shut Up For A Change’ In A Rant About The 2024 Grammys

At the 2024 Grammys last Sunday, February 4, Killer Mike won Best Rap Performance (“Scientists & Engineers“), Best Rap Song (“Scientists & Engineers”), and Best Rap Album (Michael). Killer Mike was predictably euphoric, but Twitch streamer Kai Cenat had trouble accepting that anyone beat out Travis Scott’s Utopia or Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss for the award. But Joe Budden doesn’t care to hear another word from Cenat.

On the February 7 episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, the host played a clip from Cenat’s Twitch stream in which he reacted to Killer Mike’s victory, saying, “Who decided this motherf*cker? Who the f*ck decided this motherf*cker? Her Loss?! Utopia?! Metro Boomin?!”

Budden laughingly mocked Cenat’s outrage and said, “Shut your ass up. Yo, y’all lil streaming n****s don’t always run sh*t. Shut the f*ck up! We don’t care about none of that little streaming, moshpit, marked car whatever you n****s is doing over there.”

Budden continued, “U-f*cking-topia. U-nope-ia, n***a. I’m just so happy that the streaming — that the little f*ckity f*cks finally, finally have a look-in-the-mirror moment and say, ‘Oh, it’s not about us.’ No, adults are out, n***a. N****s got pocket handkerchiefs in. N****s got fly sh*t on. Yeah, real execs, business people, you little f*ckity f*cks. Shut up for a change! I’m so sick of these n****s. We only get to do this once a year. Listen, we gotta rush behind Killer Mike. Killer Mike won. We gotta let these n****s know what the f*ck we really think.”

Benzino On Why He Created The Source Awards: “We Control The Narrative”

In a candid revelation, Benzino recently shared the origin story behind the creation of the Source Awards. According to him, the motivation for establishing the awards show stemmed from the Grammys’ historical lack of recognition and respect for the hip-hop genre. In a statement that echoes the sentiments of many in the industry, Benzino shed light on the enduring struggle hip-hop faced in gaining acknowledgment from mainstream award ceremonies.

“The reason we made the Source Awards: the Grammys weren’t giving hip-hop respect at all. This has been going on forever,” Benzino asserted, laying the longstanding frustration within the hip-hop community regarding the Grammy Awards. His words reflect a sentiment shared by artists who have often found themselves overlooked or under-appreciated by traditional award platforms. Moreover, Benzino’s observation extends beyond mere frustration, delving into the perceived intentional actions by the Grammys to provoke and disappoint hip-hop artists. “Thats why the Source Awards was important because we control the narrative,” he said. “What the Grammys just did was f**ked up, stop supporting.”

Benzino Speaks Out

Furthermore, his remark, “they do things on purpose to piss hip-hop off,” unveils a deeper layer of systemic bias. Some believe this has persisted within the Grammy voting process for years. This perspective challenges the integrity of the awards system, suggesting a deliberate sidelining of hip-hop artists. While acknowledging the importance of artists like Killer Mike, Benzino raises questions about the recent Grammy decisions. Especially in awarding three of the hip-hop and rap category Grammys to Mike. His skepticism suggests a broader critique of the Grammys, urging the hip-hop community to reconsider its support for an institution that may not truly represent its interests.

Moreover, Benzino’s call to “stop supporting” the Grammys resonates with a growing sentiment within the hip-hop industry. The idea of empowering the community to control its narrative, as exemplified by the Source Awards, becomes a rallying cry for artists to seek recognition and validation from platforms that genuinely appreciate the genre’s cultural significance. In conclusion, Benzino’s candid remarks provide a critical perspective on the Grammys’ treatment of hip-hop. As the hip-hop community grapples with ongoing challenges and strives for equitable recognition, Benzino calls for collective action. He urges artists and fans alike to reassess their support for award platforms that may not fully embrace the essence and impact of hip-hop music.
