Kelis Says She Didn’t Know She Was Sampled On Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’: ‘It’s Not A Collab It’s Theft’
Beyoncé’s highly anticipated album Renaissance, arriving tomorrow, is full of sampled artists, including Donna Summer, Big Freedia, and Kelis. Kelis, though, is not happy about it. On an Instagram post made by the account @kelistrends about Kelis being sampled on Renaissance, Kelis shared her frustrations in the comments.
“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding,” she wrote. “I heard about this the same way everyone else did . Nothing is ever as it seems , some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled.”
She argued with fans in the comments, replying to those excited about the collaboration: “it’s not a collab it’s theft,” she wrote. People pointed out that her beef is not with Beyoncé but instead with Pharrell, who she accused of stealing profits from her after she worked with him on her first two records. She opened up about the feud in an interview last year: “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it,’” she told the journalist. “I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’”

Jason Lee Hosts Second Annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Award Celebrating Lizzo, Jenifer Lewis and Floyd Mayweather
The second annual Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards, which place a strong emphasis on Black ownership, amplifying Black voices, and reclaiming Black narratives, were hosted by Jason Lee, founder of Hollywood Unlocked and head of media for Kanye West. Hollywood Unlocked’s annual awards ceremony, with the theme “Controlling Our Narratives,” honored talent for how they use their platform and influence to improve communities and society as a whole.
Hosted at The Beverly Hilton, this year’s event honored Lizzo (Fearlessness Award), Karen Bass (Community Award), Drink Champs N.O.R.E. (Culture Award), Jenifer Lewis (Perseverance Award), Floyd Mayweather (Pioneer Award), and Kelis (Innovation Award).
The 2022 Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards were hosted by Tiffany Haddish. Presenters included Blueface, Jabari Banks, Claudia Jordan and featured a surprise appearance by Mariah Carey. Performances included David Sebastian and Le’Andria Johnson.

Chloe Says Kanye West, Kelis, And Imogen Heap Influenced Her Upcoming Debut Album
On the heels of the release of her latest single, “Treat Me,” Chloe Bailey, who performs solo mononymously as Chloe, took some time to answer a few questions from fans. During her impromptu Q&A session, the Chloe x Halle half spilled some tea about her upcoming solo debut album.
When asked about her influences for her album, Chloe revealed “kanye, kelis, imogen heap, donna summer” were the ones “doing it” for her “in this very moment.”

This isn’t the first time Chloe has cited Heap or Kelis as influences. Last year, during a livestream on Instagram, she called Imogen Heap her “number one inspiration.”
“She a bad b*tch,” Bailey said of the “Hide And Seek” singer. “She produces and she writes all of her stuff.” Of Kelis, she said, “Every time I put on Kelis, I feel like the baddest b*tch.”

Also during her Q&A, she revealed that she has finalized the tracklist of her upcoming album, and also added that her verse on Fivio Foreign’s “Hello” was written and cut the night after the Grammys.
Though she didn’t announce a release date or title for her album, Chloe said fans can expect to see a more vulnerable side of her.

Kelis’ husband Mike Mora has passed away. According to Entertainment Tonight, Mora had stage four stomach cancer.
“Sadly, it’s true that Mike Mora has passed away. We would ask all to respect Kelis and her family’s privacy as of right now. Thank you,” Steve Satterhwaite, of Red Light Management, said in a statement.
Kelis and Mora have a one-year-old daughter together, born in Sept. 2020, and a 6-year-old son named Shepard. Kelis also has 12-year-old Knight from her relationship with Nas.
On Instagram, Mora chronicled his health battle, stating he first started to see symptoms on Sept. 2020. “Loss of appetite. Pain in my back also started to creep in…finally decided to do something about it,” Mora shared. “It was a bit late. But just in time.” Mora would find out his diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma, stage 4 stomach cancer, after visiting three specialists and having an endoscopic biopsy.
Mora wrote in a post, “I never thought this could happen to me. At just 36, with 3 kiddos, and a wife that loves me. I want to be able to help those that might experience something, maybe, hopefully. By showing that it’s possible to make it through.”
