7. Timbaland

Timbaland’s life has had two life-changing near-misses. At fifteen, he was shot and left with partial paralysis for nine months. Five years later, he narrowly escaped death again when his car skidded off an icy road, killing his passenger but leaving him unscathed.

The shooting also prompted a remarkable transformation. Timbaland learned to DJ with just one hand, yet the car crash had a more pronounced and enduring effect. The immediate aftermath brought nightmares, uncontrollable sobbing, and a sense of guilt. To this day, Tim avoids driving, humbly recognizing that he shouldn’t even be here.

6. Lil Wayne

A 12-year-old Dwayne Carter attempted to take his own life. Lil Wayne has detailed this incident at length, revealing that he tried to shoot himself. Police Officer Robert Hoobler saved his life en route to the hospital. Years later, while dining out, someone tapped him on the shoulder – it was Lil Wayne. The artist expressed his gratitude, noting that Officer Hoobler had saved his life and then generously covered the officer’s bill.

5. The Game

At No. 5 of the rappers that almost died is the Game. Jayceon Taylor’s life was forever changed after a fateful shooting incident at his Compton apartment. After getting hit by five bullets, he slipped into a three-day coma and emerged with a newfound purpose – to conquer the hip-hop world. Drawing inspiration from notable rap innovators such as N.W.A., Notorious B.I.G., and Nas, Game devoted himself to mastering the craft. He achieved unprecedented success with his debut album, The Documentary, which hit No. 1 in 2004. His brush with death apparently catalyzed an unquenchable ambition that continues to drive him today.

4. 50 Cent

50 Cent survived getting shot nine times while sitting in a car outside his grandmother’s home in Queens. Despite being dropped by Columbia Records while he recuperated in the hospital, he released the mixtape Guess Who’s Back. Subsequently, he became an unprecedented force in the rap game. He was eventually signed to Shady / Aftermath, with the song “Many Men” from his major-label debut referencing the shooting incident. Rumors circulated that he had ordered revenge against his shooter only weeks later.

3. Post Malone

The public was incredulous in the wake of Post Malone’s string of harrowing encounters within a three-week period. From tire blowouts on a private jet to a car crash and the thwarted burglary at his home, the rapper appeared to live under an unfortunate cloud of misfortune. Jocular speculation spread like wildfire that he had somehow managed to fall under a curse, though, in reality, it seemed his brush with danger stemmed from nothing more than sheer bad luck and a bold decision to tinker with a particularly malevolent spirit-housed object while intoxicated.

Zak Bagans, star of Ghost Adventures, visited the Haunted Museum with Post Malone in tow. Seemingly unaware of the supernatural risks, Malone recklessly opened a Dybbuk Box – a concealment vessel that traditionally houses a powerful ‘Dybbuk’ entity from Jewish folklore. Unsurprisingly, the incident culminated in a frenzied outburst from the singer once he became aware of the sacredness of the cursed item.

2. Kanye West

He is Kanye West, a groundbreaking artist of the 21st century who has set records with his prodigious output. He is widely acclaimed, earning 21 Grammy awards and gracing the cover of Time Magazine’s list of Most Influential People. On October 23, 2002, tragedy befell the budding star while working at a California studio, producing music alongside Beanie Sigel, Peedi Crakk, and The Black Eyed Peas. On his way home from the session, an unfortunate car crash ensued when Kanye dozed off. The impact inflicted irreversible damage. Miraculously surviving his near-death experience, Kanye found himself with a metal plate in his chin where it met with a fractured jaw.

Though many would have taken time to recover, Kanye channeled his experience into creativity. As a result, he entered the recording studio only two weeks after his hospitalization, evidencing his remarkable grit and determination. Subsequently, he birthed what would become his debut single, “Through The Wire.”

1. Rick Ross

Rick Roos tops the list of rappers who almost died. In 2011 and 2018, Ross endured seizures that reportedly rendered him unresponsive and, in some cases, presumed dead. Upon reflection on those hospitalizations, the celebrated artist developed the idea for his memoir. Though speculation circulated that he had experienced a heart attack during one episode, he refutes this theory in his book. Instead, he attributed it to disregarding medical advice, taking copious amounts of alcohol, and abusing codeine.

Majorie Taylor Greene Accused Of Funding Kanye West’s Website

Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Green has become one of the most visible, and controversial, figures in American politics. First elected in 2020 to represent Georgia’s 14th district, Representative Greene wasted no time in making herself known to the general public. This has rarely been for positive reasons, with Greene’s behavior and statements being a source of constant mockery. Greene was censured for comments threatening other members of Congress and supporting the January 6 insurrection. Furthermore, she has gone viral for a number of statements, including one where she made reference to “Jewish space lasers”.

However, Greene is also an incredibly influential right-wing politician. She is seen as the face of the most right-wing members of the Republican Congressional Caucus. This made her a pivotal lynchpin during the prolong Speaker of the house elections in early 2023. However, the vocal Trump support is now facing a new scandal

Greene Staffer Bought Kanye West Presidential Website Domain

In June 2022, Representative Greene hired Milo Yiannopoulos as a Congressional intern. Yiannopoulos was once one of the biggest voices in the right-wing movement but fell from grace after being successfully de-platformed from much of the mainstream internet. However, right-wing operative Laura Loomer has revealed that while interning for Greene, Yiannopoulos purchased the domain “Ye24.com” on the website hosting site, GoDaddy. Ye24.com is now the official website of Kanye West’s presidential campaign. Yiannopoulos was then reportedly reimbursed for this purchase, which totaled a little over $7000. Yiannopoulos was concurrently serving as the campaign manager for Kanye West’s 2024 election campaign at the time.

If this is true, it could be a serious breach of campaign finance law. While campaigns can donate to one another, that amount is limited to $2000 per year. If Yiannopoulos did buy the domain while registered on Greene’s staff, that would be a violation of more than three times the federal limit. Greene has denied any involvement in the incident. “Congresswoman Greene knew nothing about the gross negligence made by a vendor and is being unfairly attacked as a result,” a representative for Greene said. However, it is also worth noting that this is not coming from across the aisle. Laura Loomer is often described as “far-right” and even as a “white nationalist”. While this story is developing, it could hurt Greene both in terms of federal punishment and her standing with her pro-Trump base.

Kanye West Files Trademark For “YZY Sock Shoes”

Ye, formerly Kayne West, has lost a lot of his mainstream appeal in recent months. His anti-Semitic tirade on Twitter cost him a lot of fans, as well as his incredibly lucrative partnership with Addidas. Despite claiming he wanted to step away from the spotlight, the musician is still finding ways to generate controversy. This comes alongside news that Ye is still co-parenting his children alongside his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian.

In terms of controversy, much of it revolves around his various fashion lines. The Yeezy Season 10 fashion show had several elements that commentators noted were linked to Nazism and white supremacy. Furthermore, he just also recently ordered to pay $300k in the lawsuit surrounding YZY SHADZ. Safe to say the fashion side of things isn’t going great. But in the midst of all this, and his Presidential run, Ye is somehow still innovating.

Ye Files Sock Shoe Trademark

LOS ANGELES, CA – OCTOBER 28: Kanye West aka Ye is seen on October 28, 2022 in Los Angeles, California (Photo by MEGA/GC Images)

According to TMZ, Ye’s Mascotte Holdings Inc. submitted a trademark for “YZY SOCK SHOES”. The identifying information provides the additional description of “Socks; socks with leather soles.” This is not actually a new idea from Ye, who was seen wearing a similar product in 2019. However, little more than the trademark submission and the document identifier exist at this time. Ye and YZY are yet to make a public announcement about the upcoming project.

As for who might sell the Sock Shoes, if they ever hit the market. Addidas is out for obvious reasons. Meanwhile, other major companies and retailers will likely avoid working with Ye if possible. While he could sell them directly through the Yeezy brand, it’s unclear how much operational capacity the company still retains. However, Ye is set to make some money the coming months. It was reported that Addidas will sell off the remaining stock of Yeezys, which is valued at over $1 billion. Ye will make 15% of that sale per his contract with Addidas. How do you feel about sock shoes? Let us know in the comments.

Adidas Decided On A Plan To Sell The Remaining Yeezy Inventory After Parting Ways With Kanye West

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Adidas has over $1.3 billion of unsold product from their partnership with Kanye West. In a conference, Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden said that “options are narrowing,” but the company was “getting closer and closer to making a decision.”

Today (May 11), Gulden shared that they will sell the remaining product and a portion of proceeds will be donated to charity, according to Complex. The rapper will reportedly receive 15 percent of sales due to the contract. Gulden reasoned that “burning several million pairs [of shoes] does not make sense.”

“What we are trying to do now over time is sell parts of this inventory and donate money to the organizations that are helping us and that were also hurt by Kanye’s statements,” Gulden said.

Adidas severed their ties with West in October of last year. A statement at the time read: “Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful, and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect, and fairness. After a thorough review, the company has taken the decision to terminate the partnership with Ye immediately, end production of Yeezy branded products, and stop all payments to Ye and his companies. Adidas will stop the Adidas Yeezy business with immediate effect.”

Hip Hop Mother’s Day: 11 Rap Songs Dedicated To Moms

As Mother’s Day approaches, now is a great time to look back at some of the songs inspired by our favorite rappers’ mothers. It’s a topic that many rappers have dived into in order to show gratitude for everything their mothers did to help them succeed. From Tupac to Lil B, here’s a look at the best 11 songs dedicated to Moms in Hip-Hop history.

11. Lil B, “Best Mom Ever” (2010)

Lil B is largely known for his “meme” style of rap that has captured the internet over the last decade. However, if you dig a bit deeper into his prolific catalog, Lil B’s also shown that he can tug heartstrings with emotionally potent records. His 2010 dedication to his mother, “Best Mom Ever,” is proof of that. He opens the song as though he’s speaking directly to her, rapping, “It’s ya boy Lil B, actually it’s your son, Brandon.” After this, Lil B praises his mom, rapping that she, “kept it more realer than any best friend”, and “gave me strength even when I didn’t have weight.” Lil B closes the record as he declares, “you the best mom ever.” The entire track is heartfelt and uplifting; a perfect celebration of all great mothers.

10. Rick Ross, “Smile, Mama, Smile” (2015)

“Smile, Mama, Smile” is a raw track in which Ross details everything his mother has done for him throughout his life. In the first verse, Ross speaks on the impact his mom had on him after he had seizures in 2011. However, the underlying theme is gratitude, especially as Ross details how his mother raised him and expresses hope to repay her in his adult years. Cee-Lo Green’s beautiful chorus supplements Ross’ verses. The song is one of Ross’ most vulnerable and is a testament to his appreciation for his mother.

9. Mac Miller, “I’ll Be There” (2011)

Mac Miller’s tribute to his mother, “I’ll Be There,” came from his 2011 mixtape, Best Day Ever. On the record, Miller details how his mother instilled confidence through her loving words of encouragement throughout his childhood. However, his gratitude for her bears no limits as he thanks her for giving birth to him. Ultimately, he turns to the listener and urges them to similarly show love to their moms at any opportunity. “If you have your moms, you better treat her right/ Call her up, say ‘wassup’ before you sleep tonight/ Tell her you love her and thank her for what she did/ You may be grown now but remember being a kid when she fed you in your bed,” he raps.

8. Snoop Dogg, “I Love My Momma” (1999)

Over hypnotizing West Coast production, Snoop Dogg delivered a captivating dedication to his mother in “I Love My Momma.” In his single verse on the song, Snoop details how his mother took on the roles of both parents, rapping, “My momma was my homey, my daddy, and my best friend.” He reflects on the musical palette that helped form his own artistry as Snoop recalls his mother played oldies in the living room. However, he perfectly summarizes their relationship towards the end of his verse. “She taught me everything, but she didn’t charge a fee/ She taught me everything, except how to see a G/ For the nine months you carried, I hope you bury me/ Instead of the other way around, and I put that on Dogg Pound,” he raps.

7. J. Cole, “Apparently” (2014)

The entire album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, is a grand reflection of J. Cole’s childhood and upbringing. While Cole mentions his mother throughout the album, “Apparently” serves as a proper dedication. Cole reflects on his mother’s dedication to ensuring he had a better future, such as struggling to pay for his college tuition. The final lines of his first verse are, in particular, the most heartfelt. In them, Cole raps, “Wish you could live forever/ So we can spend more time together/ I love you, mama.”

6. Chance The Rapper, “Hey Ma” (2012)

Chance The Rapper’s song “Hey Ma” is not only a tribute to his own mother but to all the mothers who helped raise him. In the song, Chance details the mistakes he made along the way and the gratitude for his mother’s acceptance. “Hey ma, I know I never did behave a lot/Never got good grades a lot,” he raps, reflecting on his childhood. However, he also mentions the maternal nature of his friends’ moms, as well as the women throughout his neighborhood who looked after him. In his own words, Chance states the song is for “anybody who’s been a mother to a motherless child.” “Hey Ma” is a tribute to the women who’ve cared for a child, whether or not it was their biological child.

5. Nas, “Dance” (2002)

“Dance” is an emotional tribute to his deceased mother. Perhaps the most ” emotionally charged song on this list, Nas reflects on his mothers sacrifices and imagines his mother dancing in Heaven. “Jesus finally got his bride/ mommy dance with him,” he raps. Throughout it all, Nas concludes that he wants one more dance with his mother. “Dance” is a tearjerker and Nas’ pain vibrates throughout the track. Much like other entries on this list, “Dance” is a firm reminder to appreciate their mothers while they’re still alive.

4. Drake, “Look What You’ve Done” (2011)

Drake’s sincerity shines on “Look What You’ve Done,” a song dedicated to his mother, grandmother and uncle. The Take Care highlight details Drake’s appreciation for his mother and the hardships they faced throughout his childhood. The first verse plays out like an argument between the two before Drake details the pain that these arguments cause him. Despite these heated moments, he makes it clear that his love for her never fades. More significantly, Drake details her struggles with illnesses, explaining that his primary motivation for his extraordinary work ethic is to see his mom healthy.

3. Jay-Z, “I Made It” (2006)

Jay-Z’s “I Made It” is a triumphant track that celebrates the rapper’s success as well as the impact his mother had on that success. Jay-Z shares his thankfulness for her role in repairing his relationship with his father before he passed, as well as his mother’s efforts to keep the lights on as he grew up. In the third verse, Jay-Z promises to give his mother everything. He raps, “now your lil’ misfit make sure every day is Christmas, write out your wish list.”

2. Tupac, “Dear Mama” (1995)

Dear Mama” may be the greatest dedication to a mother in music history. Tupac opens up about their relationship, from the struggles his mother faced to the good times they shared together. For example, Tupac shares his admiration for his mother’s ability to defend herself in court while pregnant. “Dear Mama” is regarded as one of Tupac’s best songs ever and for good reason. It is not only a sincere dedication to Afeni Shakur but also a universal tribute to all mothers. In the words of ‘Pac: “Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place.”

1. Kanye West, “Hey Mama” (2005)

Kanye West’s “Hey Mama” has taken on even more emotional weight after the passing of West’s mother, Donda. Kanye debuted the song on an episode of Oprah with his mother sitting on stage with him. During the third verse, Kanye danced with his mother and handed her the mic to sing along with him. Along with Tupac’s “Dear Mama”, “Hey Mama” has become one of the most well-known celebrations of mothers in music history. Kanye has continued to perform the song as a tribute to his mother, most notably at the 2008 Grammy Awards, in which Kanye broke down mid-performance. In its totality, “Hey Mama” is a deeply touching and powerful song, and is both a celebration and tribute to mothers around the world.
