Janelle Monaé’s provocative rollout for their new album The Age Of Pleasure has been a sight to behold. In addition to two well-received singles, “Float” and “Lipstick Lover,” Monaé has captured the public’s attention with unapologetic displays of sensuality, from dancing on tables during Grammy week to flashing a crowd during a listening party, declaring that they are “much happier when my titties are out.”

Keeping that hedonistic streak going, the non-gender-conforming artist evoked one of the original emblems of youthful abandon, MTV, in a new trailer for the album. Transforming the iconic logo into a PTV (for “Pleasure TV”), the VHS-aping video imitates the look of a recorded episode of MTV’s popular Spring Break broadcasts, with a beach party hosted by a VJ, Tree Young. Meanwhile, Monaé can be seen in the crowd flying a Progress Pride flag, which was created in 2018 by nonbinary artist Daniel Quasar and combines the traditional rainbow flag with black and brown stripes to represent people of color and the colors of the trans flag, blue, pink, and white.

Janelle Monáe fans have waited five years for a new studio from the musician. Finally, in just a few days, their appetite will be satisfied with the release of The Age Of Pleasure. Monáe is stripping away (quite literally) all the expectations placed on them as they enter this new era of their music career. During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the Glass Onion star opened up about the creative direction for the LP. “All the songs were written from such an honest space,” adding, “I hope that people feel that when they listen to the music, that they feel that when they come and counter with me when I’m around, I definitely have had an opportunity to evolve and grow and to tap into the things that bring me pleasure, the things that perhaps I should rethink and rework. Sometimes it really is just saying, ‘You know what? Let’s get back to the basics, and also, let’s honor the present.’

Singles

To give fans a sample of the album’s intended euphoric bliss, Monáe dropped two singles, “Lipstick Lover” and “Float.” Produced by Nate Wonderful, “Lipstick Lover” received vast circulation after the official visual was released. The video featured the singer in their sexually free glory at an adult-only pool party. “Float” kicked off the sensual marketing direction of the album.

In the past few years, Janelle Monáe’s talent has become evident, if it wasn’t already, thanks to her triple threat status, impressive performance in Glass Onion, and the anticipation for her upcoming album The Age Of Pleasure sparked by the singles “Float” and “Lipstick Lover.” She didn’t always receive praise for being so good at so many things, though.

In a new list of outtakes from their recent Rolling Stone profile, Monáe recounted an incident in which they found themselves dodging bricks after a high school talent competition. They recalled their mom “driving me in her 1988 Dodge Plymouth, to and from talent shows, while people would throw bricks at our car because we won the talent show three, four times in a row.” They do, however, clarify that this only happened once.

The reactions to Monáe have certainly turned around recently. These days, folks tend to be more excited to see the singer/rapper/actor popping up to promote her music, especially as this album cycle, she’s taken to occasionally popping her top and flashing fans at her private listening parties. While she’ll probably have to tone it down when she goes on tour later this year, she explained this tendency in Rolling Stone, saying, “I’m much happier when my titties are out and I can run around free.”

Janelle Monáe is now a little over a week away from releasing her latest album, The Age Of Pleasure, and she’s done an amazing job at hyping the release up. Aside from strong advance singles, she’s also made use of some NSFW moments to hype up the project. That includes her reveal of the album’s NSFW vinyl edition, which features a gigantic illustration of breasts. Now, she’s offered a closer look at the release in a new video.

In the clip shared on Twitter yesterday (May 31), Monáe stands in front of a shelf full of her vinyl collection and takes viewers on a mini tour of it, pulling out choice albums like Prince’s Controversy and Les Hooper Big Band’s Raisin’ The Roof. They then grab a copy of The Age Of Pleasure, showing off the alternate cover art before opening it to unveil the boobs inside, as well as the striking various colors of vinyl the album has been pressed on

Janelle Monáe is ready to return to the road, announcing her Age of Pleasure tour for North America. The tour will launch in Seattle on August 30 at the WAMU Theater. Janelle proceed through Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, Kansas City, New York City, Brooklyn, and more before wrapping up in Inglewood, CA, at YouTube Theater on October 18.

The Age of Pleasure tour promotes the album of the same name, which will arrive on June 9 via Atlantic Records. The album has been teased through the release of the lead single, “Lipstick Lover.”

Tickets will be available starting with Verizon presales (details below) beginning Thursday, June 1 at 10 AM Local. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Wednesday, June 7 at 10 AM Local on Ticketmaster.com. Verizon will offer customers an exclusive presale for the Age of Pleasure Tour through Verizon Up. Janelle Monáe is hitting the road at the end of August, bringing her new album The Age Of Pleasure to 26 cities across North America on tour. Kicking off in Seattle, Washington, the Age Of Pleasure Tour will meander its way across the US and Canada to its conclusion in Inglewood, California at the YouTube Theater. Tickets go on presale Thursday, June 1, for Verizon subscribers, while the general sale will begin Wednesday, June 7 at 10 am, just two days before the album itself drops. Monáe’s semi-recent propensity for popping her top in public could see them sell out at record speed so get those clicking fingers ready.

Janelle Monáe’s Begrudgingly Released Clean ‘Lipstick Lover’ Video Tries (But Mostly Fails) To Tame The NSFW Visual

These days, there tend to by only a small handful of music videos in a given year that could be considered a cultural event. Here in 2023, Janelle Monáe’s “Lipstick Lover” visual is definitely one of them, as the NSFW clip absolutely set the internet on fire earlier this month. Now, though, Monáe has broadened the audience of the clip with a new “clean” version (emphasis on the quotation marks).

Sharing the visual on Twitter, Monáe wrote, “Aight after much back and forth and private court dates i decided to release the sinsored ‘clean virgin’ of ‘Lipstick Lover’ against my will! It’s now avail on YouTube. I added 100 more pixels by hand so y’all bet not sneak and watch the original. Enjoy loves!”

Indeed, it’s true that there are now a bunch of pixelated portions of the video, but really, the point still comes across. There are still plenty of butts hanging around a pool, and the carefree, sex-positive nature of the party depicted in the video remains well intact here.
