Burlington? Berkeley? Spotify Wrapped 2023 Is Comparing Users’ Music Tastes To Cities And The Memes Are Glorious

Spotify Wrapped for 2023 is here! Every year, the main idea is the same: Users can open the app to view a presentation highlighting their most-streamed artist, songs, albums, and other takeaways from their years in music. Spotify often tries incorporating a new feature here and there, and one in particular is lighting up social media timelines right now.

Early in the in-app presentation, one slide starts, “This year, your listening took you places, and one place listened just like you.” Using my personal Wrapped as an example, Spotify then compared my listening habits to those of people in Berkeley, California (quite a ways from my home in Portland, Maine), saying, “People there are far more likely to be fans of Vagabon, Petey, and The Japanese House.”

It turns out a lot of people got Berkeley in their Wrapped, and Burlington, Vermont was another popular city. In fact, after Wrapped was unveiled, both of them were trending on X (formerly Twitter) alongside Spotify, and the reactions and memes are pretty great. One Sopranos parody in particular is wonderful:

Cambridge, Massachusetts was also a popular city, and one user joked, “spotify is trying to make a gay commune in berkeley, a lesbian commune in burlington, and a bisexual commune in cambridge”

Ice Spice, Latto, Reneé Rapp, And More Have Been Honored In The ‘Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Celebrity List

Forbes dropped their annual 30 Under 30 Lists this week, honoring some big names that are making a significant impact in their respective fields. For musicians, Ice Spice, Trippie Redd, Steve Lacy, and Latto were included among the recipients.

Others on this year’s class list were all three members of Boygenius (Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus), Gracie Abrams, Dominic Fike, Peso Pluma, Reneé Rapp, and Kali Uchis.

Ice Spice didn’t come as a surprise, considering how she took over the music scene this year. She dropped her Princess Diana EP, after getting a boost through hits like the title track, “Bikini Bottom,” and more. She appeared on the soundtrack of the Barbie movie alongside Nicki Minaj. She also collaborated with PinkPantheress, Taylor Swift, and more.

Lacy was previously honored this year on the Time Most Influential People of 2023 list. He continued performing his hit “Bad Habit,” including at the Grammys this year, and dropped a new video for his song, “Helmet.”

And Rapp has remained incredibly busy, dropping her debut album, Snow Angel, and securing the lead role in the forthcoming Mean Girls reboot movie.

Spotify Wrapped 2023 has arrived! The popular annual campaign already has music fans around the world sharing their lists of favorite artists, albums, and songs along with the cheery, colorful graphics that make the event so anticipated each year. And while the focus is usually on users’ individual lists, it’s also fun to see what everybody else was listening to. So, what was the most-streamed album? Well, that depends. The world likes one thing, but of course, the US likes its own thing. Find out more below.

Spotify’s Most-Streamed Album Globally For 2023

The most-streamed album on Spotify in the world was Un Verano Sin Ti by Bad Bunny, a popular icon in much of the Spanish-speaking world (and a big chunk of the Anglophone one as well). You might think it would have been Midnights by Taylor Swift due to her massive Eras Tour shifting the global economy — and you’d be close, as she came in second.

However, when it came to America, the biggest hit was in a completely different, more homegrown genre. One Thing At A Time by Morgan Wallen was the No. 1 album on Spotify in the US, which only makes sense, as country music isn’t quite as popular outside of our cowboy-obsessed corner of the continent (there’s also some weird culture war stuff going on, which… yeah). R&B is also much more popular at home than abroad; SZA overtakes Taylor for the second position with SOS, while Swift comes in third.

Can Your Spotify Wrapped Be Seen By Other People?

For those who have found theirs, some might be wondering if it can be seen by other people.

Can Your Spotify Wrapped Be Seen By Other People?

It depends. Each user’s Spotify Wrapped is tailored to them, so others won’t be able to see it through the platform. However, you can take screenshots of your top stats for 2023 and share them on social media or with friends — and then, it would be seen by others that way.

Otherwise, you could simply keep the Wrapped reveal to yourself, and nobody would know.

As for your Top Songs Of 2023 playlist, this is not able to be seen by other people either. Sure, you can tell friends what tracks are on it, but each user will only be able to see their own personalized set and nobody else’s. (In past years, the playlists used to be separate and you could see ones from other users, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.)

Is Spotify Wrapped Only For Premium Users?

At long last, Spotify Wrapped has arrived. Today (November 29), Spotify has gifted users with interactive statistics based on their listening habits. In each Wrapped, listeners get a fun, colorful summary featuring their most listened-to songs, albums, and artists. Spotify also puts together a nifty little playlist featuring each listener’s most listened-to songs, as well as an assessment of their mood and personality.

As this year’s Spotify Wrapped begins to unwrapped, Spotify users have questions as to how they can access their annual stats.

Is Spotify Wrapped only for Premium users?

Both Spotify Free and Spotify Premium users can see their Wrapped statistics. However, Spotify Premium users will have access to some more interactive features. The aforementioned mood and personality assessment will only be available for viewing on the Wrappeds of Premium users.

Some of the newer features also include “Me in 2023,” which assigns each listener one of 12 characters specific to their listening habits, in a tarot-like fashion. Another feature called “Sound Town” matches each user to a city based on the songs and artists they’ve listened to.

According to a press release, listeners will also get their top five genres presented to them in a “sandwich-inspired design.”

Today, Spotify rolled out their annual Wrapped feature for 2023, giving listeners a chance to discover what their top songs or most-listened-to artists were. As many wait for the lists each year, new users might be wondering how exactly to find theirs.

Here’s what to know.

How To Find Your Spotify Wrapped For 2023

Spotify Wrapped for 2023 can be accessed through the app on your phone, typically with a pop-up alerting you that it’s ready. If you don’t receive a pop-up, you can also tap under the Wrapped section on the homepage.

For users who still aren’t seeing it or can’t access their Wrapped on the Spotify app, you can try entering through spotify.com/wrapped on a web browser. It will prompt you to sign into your account before showing your Top Listens that way.

Along with showing users their top artists and songs, Spotify Wrapped is also revealing your most-listened genres, where on Earth matches your listening history, your listening personality type, your top podcasts, and more. For those who reached a top percentage of a musician’s listeners, you might even get a special video message from them — as artists like Taylor Swift, Boygenius, and more filmed ones this year.

Today (November 29) is Spotify Wrapped day, as the world’s leading music streaming platform has unveiled its year-end lists of what artists, songs, albums, and more enjoyed the most streaming activity in 2023. As for what songs were the biggest this year, it depends on where you look.

On the global list, Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” wound up on top. If you focus in on just the US, though, Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” takes home the crown. SZA crushed it on both lists, and both ranks have her at No. 2 with “Kill Bill.”

This year’s top artist shouldn’t be a major surprise: It’s Taylor Swift. Every Monday, Billboard unveils the top 10 songs on the latest Hot 100 chart. The most recent rankings, for the chart dated December 2, are out now, so let’s run down who had this week’s biggest hits.

10. Tyla — “Water”

What a breakout year for Tyla: The South African artist has herself a breakout hit with “Water,” and now it is one of only relatively few songs ever to find itself in the top 10 of the Hot 100, after rising from No. 15 last week. Remixes with Marshmello and Travis Scott released on November 17 gave the track the boost it needed this frame.

9. Taylor Swift — “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) [From The Vault]”

“Is It Over Now?” was No. 1 three weeks ago, but now it finds itself barely hanging on in the top 10. That’s of course not the biggest Swift news of the day, though, as she just announced a VOD release for her Eras Tour concert movie.

8. Brenda Lee — “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”

The holiday season really makes time irrelevant: Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” celebrates its 65th anniversary this year, and here the Christmas classic is in the top 10 of the Hot 100.

7. Tate McRae — “Greedy”

Like Tyla, McRae just had her first top 10, although “Greedy” achieved the feat last week. Now, its success continues as the song rises up a spot from No. 8 to No. 7.

6. Zach Bryan — “I Remember Everything” Feat. Kacey Musgraves

Bryan and Musgraves’ collab has been a multi-genre force over the past few months: Aside from maintaining a Hot 100 presence, it’s currently No. 1 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts for a 13th week and on the Hot Country Songs for a ninth.

5. SZA — “Snooze”

“Snooze” is thriving right now, as SZA’s hit remains in the top 5 of the Hot 100 while leading the Hot R&B Songs chart for a 17th week.

4. Mariah Carey — “All I Want For Christmas Is You”

Yes, it’s starting again. Every year, Carey’s 1994 holiday hit had a major leap this week, rising from No. 17 all the way to No. 4. At this point, it’s appears to be only a matter of time before the frosty favorite reclaims the top spot for yet another holiday season.

3. Doja Cat — “Paint The Town Red”

It’s appropriate a song about the color red is thriving on the first December-dated Hot 100, but that’s not new, as it’s been at or near the top of the chart for some time now.

After spending five total weeks at No. 1 so far, Swift’s revived 2019 hit is taking a break from the throne as it slides down to No. 2 this week, thanks to a surging newcomer.

Offset & Don Toliver:

Fresh from the release of his second solo album, Set It Off, Offset stopped by 30 Rock to deliver a grooving performance of his song “Worth It” alongside Don Toliver on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. With the stage reflecting a summery beach setting in contrast to the actual weather outside, the set was much more appropriate for the upbeat single, which samples Busta Rhymes’ “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See.”

Davido:

Speaking of summery songs, there is perhaps no genre as full of them as Afrobeats. One of that genre’s biggest stars, Davido, also hit the Tonight Show stage for an exuberant performance, playing a medley of his songs “Feel” and “Unavailable,” flanked by a pair of joyous dancers and backed by a lustrous, brassy band.

The National:

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is known for bringing in not just high-profile talent, but also some of the headiest. The National offered a prime example of this tendency with a moody performance of their song “Space Invader” from Laugh Track.

Alec Benjamin:

Rising star Alec Benjamin dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a soulful performance of “Different Kind Of Beautiful.” The introspective track was complemented by setting the stage as a cozy bedroom, complete with a record player, reading lamp, and even a laptop open to Pro Tools.
