Jack Harlow And DJ Drama’s ‘Mockingbird Valley’ Is A Place Designated For Reflection And Subtle Flexing

DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz mixtape series may be “The most important mixtape series of all time,” in his opinion, but all eyes are on his seventh studio album, I’m Really Like That. With a guest list of star-studded guest features, the Jack Harlow-assisted track “Mockingbird Valley” is catching the ears of listeners.

As the rapper begins to heat up in the song’s first verse, DJ Drama injects in his typical fashion, but this time to give listeners a history lesson. “Do y’all remember when I told y’all I found this kid from Kentucky? And he was gonna be the one,” screams the Drama before adding, “Why would you ever doubt me?”

Harlow then gets right back into the Don Cannon-produced pocket. Across the song, Harlow name-drops some of his famous friends, including Cole Bennett, but he wants everyone to know that the bright lights haven’t changed him. Rapping,”Hollywood done turned me right into a multi-hyphenate / And still, I play it cool, I don’t get hype for sh*t / I’ma let you talk, but wait ’til I finish / Yeah, we gettin’ cake, but all the time we spent together’s what the icin’ is / [Don] Cannon put some life inside this beat, that’s why it’s loopin’ while I’m writin’ this
Y’alls whole personality self-righteousness, and I don’t like that sh*t,” Harlow tries to walk the thin line between humanity and arrogance.

DJ Drama And Tyler The Creator Chemistry Continues With The Nostalgic ‘Legendary’

A big part of the reason Tyler The Creator’s last album, Call Me If You Get Lost resonated so powerfully with rap fans a couple of years ago is that it does double duty as both an album and a worthy installment to DJ Drama’s longrunning Gangsta Grillz mixtape series. For much of the past two decades Gangsta Grillzserved as a launching pad and rite of passage for many of rap’s biggest names.

So, of course, when Tyler wanted to get back to rapping as a craftsman, he tapped the curatorial talents of DJ Drama — to great effect, I might add. And their creative chemistry continues on DJ Drama’s own new album, I’m Really Like That, which dropped today. In fact, the album opens with “Legendary,” a nostalgic review of Tyler’s breakout from internet sensation to Billboard fixture and two-time Grammy Award winner.

In addition to Tyler’s spirited intro, I’m Really Like That also features posthumous features from Nipsey Hussle and Trouble, appearances from Drama’s Generation Now artists Jack Harlow and Lil Uzi Vert, and a veritable who’s-who of both grizzled vets (Gucci Mane, Rick Ross) and rising stars (LaRussell, Symba).

Nipsey Hussle Posthumously Teams Up With DJ Drama, Jeezy, And Blxst On The Brusque ‘Raised Different’

DJ Drama’s seventh studio album, I’m Really Like That, is out today with a tracklist that features the late, great Nipsey Hussle, Tyler The Creator, the DJ’s Generation Now artists Jack Harlow and Lil Uzi Vert, and more.

Nipsey Hussle appears on the brusque track “Raised Different” alongside Atlanta rapper Jeezy and fellow West Coaster Blxst, who sings the hook. Nipsey’s posthumous verse focuses on the spoils of success but also warns foes about the consequences for pushing their luck with him. “Y’all want verbal,” he barks. “We candle your curb up.” Meanwhile, Jeezy’s verse takes stock of hip-hop’s recent run of losses: “They buried Takeoff today, let me pay my respect / Plus, it’s Dolph’s anniversary, you just don’t be next.”

In the run-up to the release of I’m Really Like That, Drama promoted the album with a string of clips reproducing scenes from the 1992 classic Juice including their original actors like Queen Latifah. Khalil Kain and Jermaine Hopkins also reprised their roles, with Jim Jones filling in for the late Tupac Shakur. You can check out more of those clips below.

DJ Drama dubbed his famed Gangsta Grillz mixtape series “THEEE MOST IMPORTANT MIXTAPE SERIES OF ALL TIME” on Twitter this morning, March 30, and then he pivoted back to promoting his next album, I’m Really Like That.

“It was a concept I had. You know, people who know me through my years, I’ve always talked about how much Juice was an inspiration for me to be a DJ, so we came up with the concept,” he said. “I actually called Jim Jones, like, ‘Yo, I got this idea.’ I was like, ‘Yo, you still directing videos?’ And he was like, ‘Here and there, not really.’ But I ran it by him, and he was like, ‘Oh, that’s crazy.’ I ran into Omar Epps sometime in New York. I ran the idea by him, and it just starting building.”

DJ Drama Unveils “I’m Really Like That” Tracklist Ft. Tyler, The Creator, Lil Wayne & More

With the resurgence of the Gangsta Grillz mixtapes in the past two years, DJ Drama’s capitalizing off of the hype with a brand new album. Over the past few months, Drama’s hinted at the release of a new project, I’m Really Like That, though he hasn’t necessarily provided a timeline of when to expect it until last week. He finally declared March 31st as the release date and shared the cover art before his Juice-themed roll out.

Last year, Drama shared a photo that revealed a few names that he collaborated with on I’m Really Like That. Artists like Freddie Gibbs, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Jack Harlow, Lil Uzi Vert, and several others appeared to be contributing to the project. However, a lot of the names were scratched out as he kept the project under wraps. However, with I’m Really Like That set to drop on Friday, he finally gave fans some insight on what to expect on his upcoming album.

DJ Drama Shares “I’m Really Like That” Tracklist

Drama’s going to have the summer on lock with his new mixtape. The DJ took to Instagram with the official tracklist that reveals a plethora of collaborators, from Wiz Khalifa and Jack Harlow to Boosie Badazz and the late Trouble. The 14-song project opens up with the Tyler, The Creator-assisted, “Legendary” and also includes appearances from Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Roddy Ricch, Jim Jones, Offset, Moneybagg Yo, and more. Many of the artists have worked with Drama on Gangsta Grillz tapes at one point in time.

Perhaps, the most anticipated record on the project will be “Raised Different.” DJ Drama unites Jeezy and Blxst, along with a posthumous verse from Nipsey Hussle, that he previewed last month. As the man who consistently states that he’s responsible for bringing “Quality street music” to the masses, I’m Really Like That will find DJ Drama doubling down on that statement. Check out the official tracklist for DJ Drama’s upcoming album and let us know which collaboration you’re most excited to hear. I’m Really Like That drops at midnight EST.

DJ Drama Continued His ‘Juice’ Remake Rollout For ‘I’m Really Like That’

DJ Drama has released the next installment of his Juice remake promoting his upcoming album I’m Really Like That, really leaning into the nostalgia with the help of rappers Jim Jones and Chinese Kitty. This time around, he duplicates the “Picking Up Vinyl” scene in which Omar Epps’ character, Q, distracts an employee at a record store by flirting with her (remember asking for phone numbers???) as his friends Raheem, Steel, and Bishop steal records.

Making the scene even more fun, the characters of Raheem and Steel and played by their original actors, Khalil Kain and Jermaine Hopkins respectively. This continues a trend from Drama’s previous scene recreation, which cast Queen Latifah in her film role as the Ruff House MC. The shop girl is portrayed by rapper/model Chinese Kitty, while Jim Jones takes over the Bishop role from Tupac Shakur. The music, of course, is updated to a more modern trap beat (a Roddy Ricch song from the upcoming album) from the New Jack Swing track from the movie. The whole thing is cool.

With two Juice remake clips out, Drama still hasn’t revealed the tracklist for his new album, which drops on 3/31 via Generation Now and Atlantic, so stay tuned — there’s definitely more to come.

DJ Drama Enlists Queen Latifah To Promote New Album

DJ Drama’s hotly anticipated album I’m Really Like That is dropping this Friday (March 31), and the acclaimed producer tapped Queen Latifah to promote its release. Not only that, but their promo was quite creative and paid homage to one of the most important films in hip-hop culture. Moreover, Latifah reprised her role in the 1992 film Juice for a recreation of one of its most iconic scenes. While Drama played the role of Q (originally played by Omar Epps), Jim Jones directed the homage. Also, additional featured actors included fellow Dipset member Juelz Santana, DJ Superstar Jay, and others.

Furthermore, the plot of the scene centered around a group of DJs waiting in line to play their mixes for the Queen so they can play at The Ruffhouse. It seems like the Gangsta Grillz icon wanted to recreate and evoke the feeling of the early hustle in the game, trying to make a name for yourself. Of course, given the incredibly stacked feature list for I’m Really Like That that floated around social media, it’s clear that Drama succeeded in such efforts.

DJ Drama & Queen Latifah Promote His New Album

To elaborate, here are a few of those names: there’s Tyler, The Creator, 42 Dugg, and Nipsey Hussle. In addition, there’s Freddie Gibbs, Lil Uzi Vert, Gucci Mane, Roddy Ricch, and many more. What’s more is that Drama isn’t just looking forward to new projects in the future, but also bringing new ones back into the culture. For example, he recently revealed that Lil Wayne’s classic mixtape Dedication 2 will make a return to streaming services this year. However, that wasn’t all, as he also stated that brand new music from him and Tunechi is due in 2023, too.

Meanwhile, the Philly native has eggs in a lot of promising baskets in addition to his solo outing. Recently, he announced that him and De La Soul are working on a Gangsta Grillz mixtape following the release of their impeccable catalog on streaming services. After so many years of innovation and quality drops, it’s very exciting to see Drama get some flowers and keep shaping the game. If you’ve never seen Juice before, check out the referenced clip below. Otherwise, come back to HNHH for the latest news and updates on Queen Latifah and DJ Drama.

DJ Drama Remade A Classic Scene From ‘Juice’ With Queen Latifah To Promote His New Album

Despite being over 20 years old, the 1992 coming-of-age crime drama Juice continues to be an inspiration for hip-hop artists to this day. Considered to be one of the first hip-hop films alongside Boyz N The Hood and New Jack City, as well as the acting debut of one Tupac Shakur, Juice‘s imagery, narrative, and soundtrack, have influenced a number of rap acts as well as the culture overall.

Case in point: In order to promote his new album that drops this week, DJ Drama reproduced one of the film’s most recognizable scenes with one of its actual actors: Queen Latifah. Latifah reprises her role from the film as Drama himself steps into Omar Epps’ role of Q as the DJ stands in line to audition to play at a local club, the Ruff House. The Queen, meanwhile, hasn’t aged a day: Black well and truly does not crack.

The album is called I’m Really Like That — a feature that he and the Queen sneak into the remixed dialogue from the scene — but for now, that’s all the information we have so far. Over on Genius there are a few possibilities for tracks that could appear, including ones with appearances from 42 Dugg, Doe Boy, Freddie Gibbs, Gucci Mane, Lil Uzi Vert, Roddy Ricch, and Tyler The Creator, but for now, we’ll just have to wait to see if Drama continues the Juice theme or taps any other classic hip-hop films for future announcements.

I’m Really Like That is due 3/31 via Generation Now and Atlantic Records.

DJ Drama Gears Up For New Album With Lil Baby & A Boogie On “HO4ME”

DJ Drama’s gone from one of the most trusted DJs in hip-hop to an extremely successful executive with Generation Now. Still, Drama’s musical output hasn’t necessarily slowed down. During the past two years, there has been a huge influx of Gangsta Grillz tapes, marking an official resurgence of the iconic mixtape series. However, it seems as though Drama isn’t solely looking to host tapes but release his own album in the near future.

DJ Drama has his own projects in the works. In the midst of releasing Gangsta Grillz tapes with Kash Doll and French Montana since the beginning of the year, he’s also hinted at dropping his follow-up to Quality Street Music 2. He hasn’t unveiled much information regarding a release date but it’s apparent that he’s using his resources in the music industry to his full advantage. He’s hinted at collabs alongside Roddy Ricch, and other star artists.

DJ Drama – “HO4ME” Ft. Lil Baby & A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie

Drama came through with some new heat alongside Lil Baby and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. The Philadelphia native delivered, “HO4ME” this morning. It’s a smooth vibe that pulls from Baby and A Boogie’s strengths. Drama brings Baby and Boogie together over smooth, R&B-centric production handled by AJ Ruined By Record, Fivecrzy, Kookup, and T Kee. Baby and Boogie’s auto-tuned melodies merge well for an anthem that would’ve been quite fitting for Valentine’s Day if it dropped earlier this week.

“HO4ME” is set to appear on Drama’s upcoming album, I’m Really Like That. Hopefully, we see a release date for the project soon. People have been particularly excited about the effort after he hinted at the features that will appear on the album. For now, we’ll just have to keep “HO4ME” on rotation. Check the single out above and sound off with your comments about the new single.

Quotable Lyrics
I was in the ‘burban, tinted out, that n***a was pitch black
You movin’ white, n***a fuck around, and push yo shit back
Don’t you go and get your shit snatched
My n***as been thirsty lately, I had to tell them to relax
