Better yet, with independent companies like A24 spewing out newfound horror classics, the decade promises to be a treat for the genre. From psychological to supernatural horror, there have been an impressive number of movie offerings. Fortunately, directors continue to push boundaries, repeatedly rejuvenating new life into the genre. 

Remarkably, ratings for horror films this year have stayed markedly high on average. In addition, a handful of films released this year have certainly joined the ranks of horror favorites. Classic franchises like Saw were rejuvenated, while new entries like Talk to Me have won the hearts of horror fans. Besides the usual Halloween horror classics, these seven horror films from 2023 are a must-see! 

Infinity Pool

This Brandon Cronenberg film features both horror and sci-fi elements. It stars Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman, and Jalil Lespert in lead roles. Infinity Pool follows a writer (played by Skarsgård) and his wife who take a trip to the fictional country of Li Tolqa on vacation. While at a resort there, they befriend another couple who encourage them to go out and have more fun. Subsequently, an unfortunate accident sets off a series of very unexpected events. Infinity Pool is available to stream on Hulu, Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Saw X

Saw X is a direct sequel to the original Saw film released in 2004. It picks up from where the first film left off, and focuses closely on the central character, Jigsaw. Saw X offers viewers a detailed backstory on the events that happened with the depraved character before his demise in Saw III. Released less than a month ago, it has been widely praised as arguably the best film in the entire franchise. The claim is evidenced by the impressive 84% Rotten Tomatoes score the movie boasts of. Tobin Bell has also received widespread praise for his performance as John Kramer/Jigsaw in the film. The movie is projected to be in theaters until mid-November at least. 

Evil Dead Rise 

This is the fifth installment in the Evil Dead film franchise. The film revolves around two sisters Beth and Ellie, and Ellie’s three children. After an earthquake hits and unveils a concealed chamber in their basement, the kids accidentally awaken a malevolent supernatural entity. The night takes a terrifying turn soon after, and the family has to fight to stay alive. Overall, the film has impressive effects, and effective scares, making it one of the most thrilling horror movies this year. Evil Dead Rise is available for streaming on Max, Apple TV, and Prime Video.

Scream VI

The sixth installment in the Scream film series was one of the first horror films to drop this year. The slasher film is one of the best in the entire franchise, and received generally favorable reviews when it was released. A handful of actors from the 2022 film Scream also reprised their roles, including Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, among others. Released on June 16, 2023, The Blackening is a black comedy slasher film set on Juneteenth. The movie is based on a short film of the same name by the comedy group 3Peat. After discovering a board game in the basement called “The Blackening,” they start getting killed off one by one by an enigmatic figure. The Blackening is notable for its unique blend of horror elements and satirical comedy. It is sure to bring out several laughs (as well as a few screams, maybe) out of you. No One Will Save You

This exciting addition to the sci-fi horror genre takes alien abduction to a whole new level. After seeing this movie, viewers may not be so keen on an alien invasion anymore if they were in the first place. No One Will Save You was only just released on September 19. However, it has already solidified itself as one of the best horror movies of 2023. The film excellently combines elements of horror, as well as science fiction. Furthermore, it features a palpable sense of dread that rises the longer you watch. No One Will Save You can be streamed on Hulu and Disney Plus’ content hub, Star. 

Talk to Me

Undoubtedly, A24’s Talk to Me is the undisputed champion of horror movies in 2023 so far. Upon its theatrical release in July this year, the film didn’t take long to achieve widespread critical acclaim. The film is arguably the most chilling watch of the year, and will leave almost any viewer spooked for a long time. Sophie Wilde, who plays the lead character Mia, gives a breakthrough performance in her role. Talk to Me is an absolute must-see, especially for fans of horror, especially supernatural horror. From Amandla Stenberg to Rachel Sennot and Pete Davidson, the cast’s chemistry is top-notch throughout the film. However, while it’s mildly spooky, the comedy is definitely the film’s biggest highlight. So don’t expect any major nightmares as a result. 

5. X (2022)

Introducing many moviegoers to the batsh*t mix of Mia Goth and horror, X is a classic slasher movie. The first film in the series of the same name, X is backed by a phenomenal cast. Notable talent includes Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, and Scott Mescudi, a.k.a. Kid Cudi. The movie takes place in 1979 and centers around a group of filmmakers who travel to Texas to make their mark in adult cinema. However, the couple they’re renting accommodations from doesn’t approve of their “unholy” intentions. Soon after, things escalate to a bloody affair. 

4. The Witch (2015)

The Witch was the world’s introduction to Anya Taylor-Joy, and she delivered a horror performance masterclass. A truly disturbing and intense offering, the movie is horror at its finest. Set in the 17th Century, a family’s banishment due to religious differences sets off a disturbing chain of events. However, at the center of all the calamity is Taylor-Joy’s character, Thomasin, a seemingly innocent young girl. Overall, The Witch doesn’t shy away from the core of horror- fear, and this evidently makes it a standout among other A24 horror movies. 

3. Midsommar (2019)

A truly polarizing entry in the pack of A24 horror movies is the disturbingly terrifying Midsommar. However, while the movie notably divided audiences and critics alike, the direction and costume design were lauded. Midsommar takes place in Sweden, where a group of friends seek tranquility at a boho-esque festival. Unfortunately, things slowly descend into a disturbing fest of blood and trauma as a pagan cult begins to carry out unseemingly rituals.

While many A24 horror movies are known to divide viewers, Talk to Me is pretty much straightforward horror. The plot follows a group of teenagers discovering a way to communicate with the dead. Evidently, things take a turn for the worse when one of them takes things a little too far. Sophie Wilde stars as Mia, a girl who wishes to reach out to her late mother. Her performance is particularly notable, delivering a stellar performance as a possessed vessel. Overall, Talk to Me follows the usual “conjuring spirits” formula, but the cast and direction take things up a notch. It is now the highest-grossing A24 horror movie of all time.

The 1992 movie, Candyman might not be the most widely celebrated horror film of all time. However, it holds a special place in hip-hop culture. One of the most popular mentions of Candyman in Hip Hop is on 2Pac’s song, “Troublesome ’96.” On the track, the MC raps the lyrics, “Say my name three times like Candyman, bet I roll on your ass like an avalanche.” Although it’s not exactly five times, 2Pac’s message comes across loud and clear: like Candyman, he is not one to mess with.

Kendrick Lamar famously referenced Candyman on “ELEMENT.,” a track from his critically acclaimed album DAMN. In the latter part of the song, he raps, “Just say his name and I promise that you’ll see Candyman.” Similar to ‘Pac, Kendrick aligns his vengeful side with Candyman. At a time when he was gunning for hip-hop’s throne, he made it clear that he would murder the career of any rapper that dared mention his name, similar to Candyman.

Phillip Glass’ “Music Box” Legacy

The eerie soundtrack of the Candyman movie has also been sampled in Hip Hop music. Speaking to IGN, the film’s score composer, Phillip Glass, shared that he still makes good money off the soundtrack. While largely attributed to the film’s popularity, there’s no doubt that several acclaimed rappers and producers have transformed the eerie soundtrack into undeniable bangers.

A prime example of this decades-long relevance can be heard in Travis Scott’s 2014 mixtape, Days Before Rodeo. In the intro, “The Prayer,” Travis samples Glass’ “Music Box” from the Candyman movie soundtrack. That same year, Big Sean sampled the song on “1st Quarter Freestyle.” Similarly, the remix of Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater” ft. Five Nights at Freddy’s is a familiar title to most gamers. The indie horror video game series was created by developer Scott Cawthon. It has significantly impacted the gaming industry and popular culture since its debut in 2014. Since then, the franchise has notably grown and now has over 10 video game installments. This Halloween, the franchise will expand further as the first movie adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s will be released in theaters. The horror film with the same name as the original game promises to take viewers on a scary trip through the FNaF world. Freddy Fazbear and his animatronic mates are set to appear on the big screen later this month, so you might want to add this to your Halloween horror movie lineup.

The Premise

Sticking with the plot of the first FNaF game, the movie will follow a night security guard named Mike Schmidt. He takes a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a family-friendly restaurant with animatronic characters. We’re unsure if you’ve projected plans for Christmas season 2024, but Jordan Peele is mapping out a takeover. The comedy giant-turned-horror filmmaker’s movies have been one blockbuster after another. His career is a case study in successful crossover appeal, and fans worldwide have been amazed by his productions. According to Variety, Peele is readying a new film to bulk up his growing résumé of titillating thrillers.

It seems that Universal Pictures slyly released minimal information about Peele’s next hit. The director has a habit of being enigmatic when teasing his releases. While others opt to share information about the cast and production credits far out to gain buzz about a project, Peele does the complete opposite. He doesn’t tell much of anything about his films until their rollout press season, and he’s done just that with his Holiday 2024 feature. Universal Pictures helped release Peele’s Get Out, Us, and last year’s Nope, and they’ve added Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele. It’s slated to hit theaters on December 25.

Massive Hollywood productions often fight it out to see who with reign, and it’s already shaping up to be a battle at the box office. On December 24, 2024, Variety reported that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and James Cameron’s Avatar 3 are both set to premiere. As if that wasn’t enough, Wicked was also set for release that weekend. However, the film adaptation of the famed musical will arrive on Thanksgiving next year.

Additionally, that may not be the only Peele-affiliate feature of 2024. His production company, Monkeypaw, has another film that’s said to hit theaters or streaming services on September 27, 2024. Like his other productions, nothing has been shared about the feature. Yet, fans believe Peele will stick to his horror-thriller-science fiction appeal and continue moving through those genres. He jumped into a new space in 2017 when he released his acclaimed Get Out, starring Daniel Kaluuya. The film placed him on the map of formidable filmmaking contenders, earning four nods from the Academy Awards. Us arrived two years later with Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong’o, and more recently, Nope with Kaluuya and Keke Palmer stormed the box office. Are you excited about Peele’s next film?
