Post Malone And Roddy Ricch Are Vibrant Ballers In The New ‘Cooped Up’ Video

With his upcoming fourth studio album Twelve Carat Toothache just weeks away, Post Malone has revealed the video for his Roddy Ricch collaboration, “Cooped Up.”

In the Andre Bato-directed video, Malone arises from a bed, ready to party, lamenting the fact that he’s been “f*cking cooped up.” He then proceeds to dance in an artsy, luxury apartment bedecked with modern furniture and works of art. Noticeably missing from the home space are walls and ceilings. Roddy Rich later emerges from a dark space (more so literally than figuratively) to deliver his verse, before a crowd of people fill the apartment, ready to party.

In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Malone hilariously revealed how writing “Cooped Up” came naturally to him.

“I’ve been out of my bag for a long time, and I’m trying to hop back in there, man,” said Malone. “We knew what we wanted to say, and we knew what we wanted to express, not only in a song but in that particular moment on the album…I couldn’t even tell you. I was probably on the shitter when I wrote it.”

Maxo Kream Salutes The Roc-A-Fella Records Dynasty With ‘Jigga Dame’

Maxo Kream’s new album Weight Of The World is only six months old, but he’s already back to the grind with a brand new single, “Jigga Dame.” As suggested by the song’s title, Maxo’s stutter-stepping raps detail his admiration for the Roc Roc-A-Fella Records dynasty. “Me and Jigga talk figures he give me game,” he boasts, “Me and my n****s split millions like Jigga Dame.”

The Houston rapper’s last album dropped two years after its predecessor, Brandon Banks, but it looks like Maxo isn’t waiting another two years to drop his next one. “I’m bacc in Trigga Maxo Mode,” he declared on Twitter, suggesting that he’s looking to keep up the stream of new music after such a long hiatus between his last two albums.

Meanwhile, he put that previous break to good use, building relationships throughout the rap game that led to one of his most collaborative projects yet. Some of the guests on Weight Of The World included Tyler The Creator, who also directed the video for “Big Persona,” Wale and Yella Beezy, who appeared on “Down South,” and ASAP Rocky, who contributed a verse to “Streets Alone.” If he does follow up “Jigga Dame” soon, it’ll be fun to see how he builds on that momentum.

Lizzo Asked Chris Evans To Play Piano On Her New Album, ‘Special’

Lizzo’s new album, Special, is set for release on July 15, but we don’t know much about the album yet. There’s the single “About Damn Time,” of course, but there’s not a ton of info about the LP beyond that. Now, though, Lizzo has pulled back the curtain a little bit, revealing that, despite her best efforts, the album will not feature Chris Evans playing piano.

On a new episode of Spout Podcast, Lizzo said, “I literally hit him up and was like, ‘Play piano on my album,’ and he just said, ‘Haha.’ It would have been really cool, but unfortunately not this time.”

Yes, Evans is a capable pianist, as the actor reminded fans last October by playing a portion of Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

Lizzo also addressed internet rumors that the new album features a duet with Harry Styles. Lizzo didn’t actually outright debunk the idea, saying, “That is so funny. The internet going to internet. That’s all I’ll say about that.” Lizzo also said of the LP, “I think people are going to be really surprised at how many love songs are on this album.”

Elsewhere, she spoke about why she thinks her Amazon Prime show Watch Out For The Big Grrrls is building a strong connection with audiences, saying, “I think it’s because of the stories. I couldn’t have found better human beings to represent the big girls. They are so talented, so beautiful, and so willing to be vulnerable. And I think vulnerability is, you know, everyone has like a bullsh*t detector these days, like, we can read through bullsh*t. And I think none of these girls are bullish. All of these girls are 100 percent real. And I think people really connect with that.”

JID Backs Up John Legend On The R&B Star’s Groovy New Single, ‘Dope’

JID’s public profile has been growing at an impressive clip this year, in large part because of his contribution to the uber-popular Imagine Dragons song “Enemy,” which features on Netflix’s League Of Legends-inspired animated series Arcane. His standing looks to take another big leap as he links up with another Top 40 favorite in John Legend for Legend’s new single “Dope.” A groovy track that gives 2000s-era Neptunes production vibes, the track finds Legend singing about a paramour that “shows me what dope means.”

Meanwhile, JID finds a way to balance his lightspeed, tongue-twisting flows with the song’s more pop-leaning sensibilities, contributing a verse that might be a little hard to sing along to but won’t trip up dedicated Legend fans who might not yet be aware of JID’s popularity with rap diehards.

The song’s just the latest indication that JID’s long-awaited follow-up to the fan-favorite 2018 album DiCaprio 2 is on the way, even without any official word from JID. Of course, he’s kept his fans well-fed in the years since, contributing to projects from the likes of Conway, Doja Cat, Denzel Curry, his Dreamville compatriots like Lute, and his own Atlanta-based collective Spillage Village. Most recently, he was featured on Dreamville’s new Gangsta Grillz tape D-Day after dropping his comeback single “Surround Sound,” but all these tidbits and teasers are only heightening the anticipation for his next solo album, which hopefully drops sometime this year.

IDK Keeps Things ‘Simple’ In His At-Home Tiny Desk Concert Featuring Mike Dean

One of the most fun elements of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts has always been the crowd interactions — something that has been missing ever since the series went to an at-home format as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, as restrictions have eased up and vaccination levels increase, it looks like we’ll start to receive something of a hybrid approach whenever it’s possible. IDK’s new Tiny Desk Concert brings back the live audience feel as he invites neighbors and friends to his Los Angeles home to perform new songs from his recently released album Simple.

Opening with the soulful “Puerto Rico,” IDK opts to set the mood with the smooth, melodic gem from USEE4YOURSELF rather than one of his harder-hitting rap tracks, which allows him to present himself as a “sweet guy” and adds to the overall inviting mood. Meanwhile, Kaytranada’s jazzy, house-influenced production from Simple proves to translate beautifully to the stripped-down set, where some synthesized baby grand sets the groove as IDK’s friend thumps out the beat on a coffee table. Mike Dean also makes an appearance to contribute a ripping guitar solo to IDK’s latest single, “Breathe.”

An Expansive MF DOOM Biography Is Coming In 2024

Despite being an underground staple for the majority of his career, MF DOOM’s recent passing shed light on just how widespread his influence really was. As such an impactful figure in hip-hop, he also has one of the most intriguing — and occasionally even mysterious — stories in the culture, thanks to his reluctance to enter the spotlight and his tendency to disappear for years at a time. Also, he wore a freaking Gladiator mask for public appearances, allowing him to be in multiple places at once via body doubles and shirk off things like interviews.

All these elements make for a fascinating biography, which is what we’ll get in 2024 with The Chronicles Of Doom: Unraveling Rap’s Masked Iconoclast by veteran journalist S.H. Fernando Jr. via Astra House. Fernando Jr. has also written extensively about hip-hop, including in the 1994 book The New Beats: Exploring The Music, Culture And Attitudes Of Hip Hop, and the 2021 Wu-Tang Clan biography, From The Streets Of Shaolin: The Wu-Tang Saga.

After MF DOOM’s death was announced on New Year’s Eve (in typical DOOM fashion, this was two months after he actually died on Halloween), a street in Long Beach, New York, his hometown, was named after him. Meanwhile, rappers from Yasiin Bey to Playboi Carti shared their memories of his outsized impact.

Diplo, Rico Nasty, Tinashe, And More Will Get Terrorized In Season 6 Of ‘The Eric Andre Show’

Eric Andre returns to terrorize more unsuspecting guests in the sixth season of his Adult Swim talk show The Eric Andre Show. For those unfamiliar, the show revolves around a late-night talk format that goes left almost as soon as the guests set foot on the stage. Think of a prank show like the Impractical Jokers breaking out in the middle of an episode of Seth Myers, only it’s Seth doing the pranks, and they range from absurdist shenanigans to set-destroying mayhem.

Naturally, you’ve got to have guests who bring a certain amount of chaotic energy themselves (or play everything straight to offset Andre’s antics), and the season six trailer has plenty of those. Blac Chyna, Cypress Hill, Diplo, Jaleel White, Jon Hamm, Lil Yachty, Meagan Good, Natasha Lyonne, Rico Nasty, and Tinashe are all billed in the press release, along with “a host of other celebrities so big we legally can’t use them in promotions.”

Even Andre himself was dumbfounded by the roster of people who apparently either haven’t watched the show before or are game to put up with his provocations to promote their new projects. “Expect more deranged pranks, fire, and chaos in Season 666 with a jam-packed schedule of celebrities I can’t believe agreed to this,” he joked.

The ‘Look At Me: XXXTentacion’ Trailer Examines A Polarizing Subject

The trailer for the long-awaited documentary, Look At Me: XXXTentacion, has arrived. First announced in 2019, the documentary will finally land on Hulu on May 26, moving the date up by several weeks. The documentary promises to delve into not just the late rapper’s meteoric rise to fame but also the fallout from his abuse of ex-girlfriend Geneva Ayala. In the trailer, those who knew him best — his mother, his manager, and his friends — weigh in on the elements of his personality that made him both charismatic and self-destructive.

XXXTentacion’s death at 20 years of age in 2018 left behind a complicated legacy. Obviously, lots of people loved his music and felt as though he spoke for them. Equally as obviously, he’d done plenty of harm in even the short time that he had, from a homophobic attack on a cellmate to the horrific abuse he inflicted on Ayala. The polarizing rapper was never held to account for that abuse, with his case getting closed as a result of his death. That leaves some pretty heavy questions hanging over his name and image — questions that many will look to this documentary to resolve. While they may not find the answers they want, there’s little question that they’ll be tuning in.

Taylor Swift Proudly Dons Her Cap And Gown Ahead Of Receiving Her Honorary Doctorate From NYU

It’s been a big year for Taylor Swift at New York University (NYU): First the college started offering a course about her, then in March, they announced they’d be awarding Swift an honorary doctorate of fine arts. Swift, who didn’t go to college since she was instead spent those years of her life becoming a global megastar, is pretty excited about the whole thing, as indicated by a video she shared this morning.

In the Instagram Reel, set to Beabadoobee’s recent single “See You Soon,” Swift rides in a car, looking out the window. Subsequent shots show her getting ready, donning her cap and gown, and having her father take a photo of her in her get-up. The closing shot is similar to the opening one, except this time, Swift is smiling in her graduation outfit. The post is captioned, “Wearing a cap and gown for the very first time – see you soon NYU.”

In addition to receiving the honorary doctorate, Swift is also set to deliver a speech at today’s commencement ceremony, at approximately 11 a.m. ET. The commencement is being livestreamed here.

Beabadoobee, by the way, was thrilled with Swift using her song in the video. On her Instagram Story, she shared the video and wrote, “taylor and see you soon I’m crying [heart emoji].” In a follow-up video, she said, “This… is possibly the best day of my life. Taylor Swift listens to ‘See You Soon.’ This is the best day…”
