Lil Nas X Shares Another Trailer For His Upcoming Documentary

Last year, Lil Nas X announced a new documentary following him on his first-ever world tour. The project is called Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero and some fans have already gotten the chance to see it. The film premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival with the rapper himself looking extra stylish in attendance for the premiere. But earlier this month it got an official release date that’s had fans looking forward to when they can see it. That date is January 27 when it will air on HBO and simultaneously be streaming on Max.

Ahead of the release date, yet another trailer for the forthcoming project has been released. The trailer touches on a number of different subjects in rapid-fire fashion. It details his come-up into the mainstream as a pop star, when he revealed his sexuality to fans online, and how he approached some of the biggest shows of his entire career so far. Though the trailer is just a short two minutes it seems to touch on nearly everything that will be appearing in the documentary. Check out the new trailer and various fan reactions to it below.

Lil Nas X Documentary Gets Another Trailer

Of course for big fans of Lil Nas X, the documentary is the last thing they’ve been thinking about in recent weeks. He recently dropped the lead single to his new album “J CHRIST” amid a swam of controversy. Fans took issue with his use of biblical imagery in both the song itself and the accompanying music video. It’s something he’s dealt with before in the wake of the music video for his song “MONTERO.”

The backlash started last year when Lil Nas first began teasing his new music. As soon as he declared his new “Christian era” underway, haters began to emerge. What do you think of the newly shared trailer for Lil Nas X’s upcoming documentary? Do you plan on watching the doc when it comes out later this month? Let us know in the comment section below.

Max Cancels “Rap Sh!t” After Two Seasons

The Issa Rae-created comedy series Rap Sh!t has been officially canceled by Max after two seasons. “We are extremely grateful to Issa Rae for creating Rap Sh!t, a one-of-a-kind comedy with compelling social commentary that reached viewers in a way only Issa’s talents can accomplish. A huge thank you to Issa, showrunner Syreeta Singleton and the teams at Hoorae and 3 Arts Entertainment for introducing us to Shawna and Mia. They are a duo whose journey fans have been invested in and who they have continued to root for through everything. We’ll never get Seduce and Scheme out of our heads. We wouldn’t have it any other way,” A Max spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

The show followed two aspiring rappers, played by Aida Osman and KaMillion, as they navigated the intersection of life and their burgeoning music careers. The show has a 100% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audience scores dropped for the show’s second season, whose release was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strike last year. Under the rules of the strike, the cast and crew were also unable to promote the show ahead of its second season.

Rap Sh!t Latest Max Show To Get Axed

However, Rap Sh!t is just the latest show that Max has canceled this month. Earlier in January, Max also announced the cancelation of Julia, the series inspired by the life of legendary chef Julia Childs. Meanwhile, the platform also declined to renew Out Flag Means Death, the gay pirate drama spearheaded by Taika Waititi. Elsewhere, Max did renew Bookie, the latest series from Chuck Lorre for a second season.

Furthermore, the cancelations come amid an uncertain time for Max and its parent company – Warner Bros. Discovery. In December 2023, it was announced that talks were underway for Warner Bros. to acquire Paramount Global. This would likely see Paramount Plus folded into Max. However, these talks are in the very early stages and could inevitably go nowhere. Despite this, it means little for the cast and crew of the shows that will not continue onto another season.

“The Idol” Takes A Shot At Kanye West In Series Finale

Over the weekend the finale episode of The Weeknd’s The Idol series aired on HBO. The show has been controversial from the very start for things like its portrayal of women. The show was also consistently blasted by critics throughout its entire run for supposedly bad writing and acting. Now, according to TMZ, in the show’s final episode it takes a shot at another source of controversy, Kanye West.

The rapper famously shot off with a series of antisemitic rants last year. At his peak of volatility, he expressed his adoration for Adolf Hitler during an interview. Even when he was given the opportunity to clarify he instead doubled down on his statements. Now months later The Idol is taking aim at his comments. In a scene where the show’s lead Jocelyn is trying to convince her management she’s ready to go back on tour, they remain unconvinced. In what seems like a misguided argument, she cites Kanye West as a reason for why she is capable of going on tour. “You know f*cking Kanye was filling arenas until he decided to start following Adolf Hitler,” she says.

“The Idol” Aims At Kanye West

Even since he largely disappeared from the public eye, Kanye West has continued to have a controversial time. The rapper is a part of two ongoing lawsuits that he’s trying to have thrown out. The first deals with a space that GAP rented for their collaboration. West reportedly made permanent changes to the space violating a contract that explicitly forbids it. Now GAP is denying that they’re responsible for West’s action in the space. Kanye is also trying to get the lawsuit thrown out himself.

Kanye West is also dealing with the ongoing suit from his Donda Academy. Three teachers sued the institution for reportedly firing them based on racial motivations. West denied all of the allegations and denied that he had a direct role in them. What do you think of The Idol‘s joke at Kanye West’s expense? Let us know in the comment section below.

Will There Be Season 2 Of ‘The Idol?’

The Idol sparked plenty of controversy leading up to and following the Cannes premiere, which essentially ended up being a glitzy premiere for an intentionally shocking series. At least, that’s the indication still present following the show’s first two episodes, which appears to be the maximum screened for both critics and at-home audience alike.

The show hasn’t been a ghost town for viewership, although one scene racked up more YouTube views than the entire relevant episode did on HBO and Max. So, will we be seeing any more confusing and straight-up bad sex scenes in a second season from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye?

That remains unclear, although HBO PR has spoken, as noted below. This week, however, a Page Six report claimed that a second season will probably not be in the cards although “[t]he door is definitely still open — it’s definitely not a decision [yet].” This appeared to be based upon second-week viewing figures being noticeably lower than the debut episode. Yet perhaps people have since felt compelled to catch up with what GQ called “the worst sex scene in history,” which add up to several minutes that I wouldn’t mind scrubbing from memory.

So, we may or may not see more of Tedros’ unsexy directives to his cult members because HBO subsequently responded on Twitter. “It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined,” the premium cable channel wrote through their PR handle. “It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”

Well, at least Blackpink fans seem to be happy with more Jennie? Silver linings.

‘The Idol’ Viewers Were Here For One Character’s Change In Demeanor While Being Scandalized By The Rest Of Episode 2

Few people would ever accuse (or praise) the The Idol of being anything less than an intentionally controversial hot mess. The second episode more than doubled down on the softcore-porn vibe with nudity galore and a particularly unsettling sex scene (a followup on the confusing counterpart of the pilot) between Lily-Rose Depp’s Jocelyn and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s Tedros. (I’ll spare you the details, but let’s just say that a different kind of choking was involved.) As viewers learned about the latter, he is apparently leading some kind of sex cult, and he’s succeeding at getting Jocelyn into his clutches. By the end of this week’s edition, he’s arranged to move into her mansion as her career is falling into tatters around her.

And that’s where the character of Dyanne comes back into focus. The back-up dancer character, who is portrayed by K-pop star Jennie Kim from Blackpink, already captured more YouTube views for one scene than the premiere initially racked up for HBO. Jennie later revealed that the choreography came pretty naturally, and it seems that everything that Jocelyn can do (dancing, singing, and “f*ck”-ing), Dyanne can do better.

In retrospect, this HBO tweet had some fun with what was to come: “Everyone needs a Dyanne.”

As it turns out, Dyanne was the reason why Jocelyn ended up at Tedros’ club. She’s also apparently coming for Jocelyn’s career, and by the end of the episode, she’s laid down a track for a record executive (played by Jane Adams) who sent Jocelyn home after her on-set meltdown.

Here’s a budding theory (about that leaked photo) that actually might not be too far-fetched, considering all that we are learning about this cult.

Amid all of the well-founded tweets complaining about the Jocelyn-Tedros sex scene, another refrain is becoming clear: people are enjoying the revelation that Jennie is portraying a villain. So, I imagine that a great deal of people who continue to tune in will do so solely for the Blackpink star.

HBO’s The Idol airs on Sunday nights at 9:00pm EST.

The Weeknd’s “The Idol” Reviews Are Not Favorable

One of the most anticipated shows of the year is HBO’s The Idol created by The Weeknd and Sam Levinson. Although information regarding the show has been rather limited until its Cannes Film Festival premiere, there were already concerns surrounding the limited series. A report from Rolling Stone detailed some of the behind-the-scenes drama with interviews from 13 members of the crew. HBO and The Idol creators faced accusations of fostering a toxic work environment while the show’s content was compared to “torture porn.”

Unfortunately, the debut of The Idol didn’t necessarily push back against these claims but instead, according to critics, reinforced them. Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times compared the show to “a Pornhub-homepage odyssey,” largely due to the number of nude scenes involving Lily Rose Depp. Meanwhile, Gregory Ellwood of ThePlaylist.net called the first episode “eh,” although admitted there were some funny scenes as well as cool stylistic choices. However, he described the second episode as “sexist, pseudo-porn.”

“The Idol” Reportedly Doesn’t Live Up To The Hype

With The Weeknd’s name attached, The Idol became one of those shows that people believed could be great. However, following the Rolling Stone piece, there have been a number of people skeptical on what he has in store. During the red carpet, Sam Levinson and Lily Rose Depp provided a direct response to the allegations. “I just wanna say that it’s always sad and disheartening to hear mean, false things about someone you care about, and it wasn’t my experience shooting the show,” Depp said, per Rolling Stone

At the same time, Levinson acknowledged that show was intended to be provocative. Still, he was caught off-guard by some of the claims. “When I read the specifics, however, it just felt completely foreign to me. But I know who I am. There’s the work, and there’s the managing of the persona. And that is not interesting to me, because it takes away from the work,” he stated. “They’re free to write whatever they want. My only gripe is that they intentionally omitted anything that didn’t fit their narrative. But there’s been a lot of that lately.”

The Weeknd’s Controversial Series ‘The Idol’ Finally Has A Release Date

The Weeknd’s long-awaited — and controversial — series The Idol finally got its release date today, along with a new teaser trailer. The Idol will make its debut on Sunday, June 4 at 9 pm ET on HBO, as well as streaming on the recently-renamed Max. The new teaser reveals few details of the plot that we didn’t already know, but does feature some steamy scenes of Abel’s cult-ish character getting close to Lily-Rose Depp’s pop singer Jocelyn.

The Idol — which was co-created by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson before he took over as director at The Weeknd’s request — has been the subject of contentious rumors and fan speculation after Rolling Stone published a feature revealing some of the behind-the-scenes snafus with the production, including the original director Amy Seitz being replaced by Levinson when Abel apparently became worried that his character’s screen time was being curtailed to emphasize a more feminist story from Jocelyn’s point-of-view.

Some of the scripts produced after the change — which came after 80 percent of the show had already been filmed — drew criticism from the crew for containing problematic themes. The Weeknd himself took issue with the Rolling Stone article, lashing out on Twitter with a scene from the show itself that didn’t much help his case, and circumspectly addressing the rumors in an Interview magazine conversation with Jeremy O. Harris.

We’ll find out how it all plays out on 6/4 on HBO. Check out the new trailer above.
