Saba And G Herbo Grapple With ‘Survivor’s Guilt’ On Their Riotous New Song

Finally, after a wait that lasted nearly four years, the music world will receive a new album from Saba next week. The Chicago native is preparing to release his third album, Few Good Things, and so far it stands as a promising follow-up to his 2018 album Care For Me. The rapper has released three singles from the project: “Stop That,” “Fearmonger” with Daoud, and “Come My Way” with Krayzie Bone. Ahead of the release of Few Good Things, Saba returns with the album’s fourth single, “Survivor’s Guilt” with fellow Chicagoan G Herbo.

The duo’s new single is a bass-heavy effort that finds the both of them grappling with their individual survivor’s guilt. Saba fires off lines like, “I’m tryna move better, what’s really eatin’ when you from a food desert? / I see the news letters, can’t listen to them, they be movin’ too careless,” during a pair of verses on the song. To close things out, G Herbo arrives with a verse of his own that gives a glimpse of how he pushed through his past struggles. “Stay on the grind, had to plot for some years,” he raps. “Ain’t have no fear, I weren’t droppin’ no tears.”

The song arrives after Saba unveiled the official tracklist for Few Good Things. The project will offer 14 songs to listeners with guest appearances from 6lack, Smino, Black Thought, Mereba, Foushee, G Herbo, Eryn Allen Kane, Benjamin Earl Turner, Pivot Gang, Cheflee, Daoud, and Day Wave.

Drakeo The Ruler’s Family Details The $20 Million Lawsuit They’re Filing Against Live Nation

After the tragic stabbing of Drakeo The Ruler at the Once Upon A Time In LA festival in December, the young rapper died from the injuries he sustained at the event. Directly after her son, born Darrell Caldwell, was murdered, his mother, Darrylene Corniel, said she planned to sue the event over this wrongful death. Today, Billboard reports that the family’s lawyer, James Bryant, has outlined some of their legal action against Live Nation, C3 Presents, and Bobby Dee Presents.

Bryant said a lack of precautions to protect the rising young artist led to a situation where he was “essentially lynched,” and said the family will be seeking up to $20 million in damages. “His life was taken way too soon,” Bryant continued. “This should never have never happened if those promoters had actually had the proper security protocols. This was a preventable death,” he added, citing the fact that Drakeo was assigned “no security” and noting the barricades at the event were completely insufficient. Those who failed Drakeo the Ruler, they’re going to be held accountable,” the lawyer concluded.

Drakeo was stabbed during a skirmish backstage, much of which was captured on video, and the lawyer’s displayed this footage during their press conference. Billboard reached out for comment from the promoters involved but so far they have yet to respond.

2 Chainz Shares An Update About His Upcoming ‘ColleGrove 2’ Album With Lil Wayne

In a little over a week, 2 Chainz will release his seventh album Dope Don’t Sell Itself. It’s a project that’ll check in with 12 songs and features Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, Lil Durk, Swae Lee, Moneybagg Yo, 42 Dugg, and more. 2 Chainz also billed the upcoming effort as his “last trap album,” but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

During an interview with DJ Akademiks on the Off the Record podcast, 2 Chainz gave an update on ColleGrove 2, his long-awaited joint project with Lil Wayne, and the sequel to the 12-track effort they dropped off back in 2016.

“We were in the studio together,” 2 Chainz said. “I think the last time we were in the studio together maybe twice. This time, we’ve been in the studio together multiple times working on this project. Whether going back in after we’ve done something or whatever.” He added, “I feel super excited about this f*cking project because it don’t sound like nothing I’ve ever heard before. And doing something like that with Wayne, it’s welcoming, it’s warming, and it’s going to be accepted.”

2 Chainz also noted that ColleGrove 2 is “definitely coming out this year” and that Wayne will appear on every song.

You can listen to 2 Chainz talk about ColleGrove 2 in the video above.

Jhené Aiko, Summer Walker, And Jorja Smith Are Headlining The Female-Led Sol Blume Festival Lineup

Achieving gender parity in musical festival lineups has been an uphill battle for female artists. Over the past few years, we’ve seen lineup figures cross the 30% mark of female-led acts on the bill, but that number seldom affects the headlining slate, which is typically dominated by male artists. We’ve seen some festivals recently make it a priority to feature female-led acts in at least half of the bill, but when it comes to hip-hop, that effort is generally negligible.

Enter Sacramento’s Sol Blume festival. Now in its third edition, the fest has just announced an eye-popping slate of female headlining acts and a 2022 lineup that shows true balance between female and male stars in hip-hop, R&B, and soul. Jhené Aiko, Summer Walker, and Jorja Smith are the headliners along with PartyNextDoor, making for a formidable slate of some of today’s best artists. The two-day Sol Blume fest is also moving to a new venue at Sacramento’s Discovery Park, with its sweeping 300-acre riverside footprint.

Among the acts joining the headliners on the bill are Alina Baraz, Majid Jordan, SiR, Lucky Daye, Kiana Ledé, DVSN, Syd, Thundercat, Tinashe, Blxst, Rexx Life Raj, Sinéad Harnett, Smino, Lauren Jauregui, Tiana Major9, Tink, Yeek, and more.

Tickets go on sale Monday, January, 31 at 1o am PST here. You can full details and lineup info at the same link.

HER Is The New Face Of L’Oreal Paris’ Makeup As Their Global Ambassador

Over the course of her music career, HER has earned an overwhelming number of awards an accolades, including several MTV VMAs, 21 Grammy nominations, and an Oscar. Now, along with Grammy-winning singer, HER can add another title to her name: Global Brand Ambassador.

The multi-hyphenate musician just signed on as the Global Brand Ambassador for the makeup company L’Oréal Paris. Much like with her music, the singer said she hopes to inspire girls everywhere in her new role with the brand.

“When I use my voice, I need to stand 100 percent with what I represent,” HER said in a statement. “So, I’m beyond happy to join L’Oréal Paris, and to add my voice to this sisterhood representing the diversity of beauty on this plant, with the message for every girl to know her worth deep in her heart.”

Continuing to talk about her new role on Instagram, HER wrote, “Like so many women, @LorealParis is a brand I’ve known since I was a young girl, not just for their products (which I really do use!) but also for their beautiful mantra, Because I’m Worth It. That powerful statement is just as relevant today as it was when introduced to the world 40 years ago. I can’t wait to be part of helping to shape what it means for the next generation of women to feel #worthit.”

HER hasn’t mentioned whether or not the new partnership will result in an exclusive makeup line, like Megan Thee Stallion did with Revlon. But it does look like HER will be starring in L’Oréal’s upcoming advertisement campaign for their Elvive Dream Lengths Super Curls hair care line.

Stunnaman02 Brings His Viral Hit ‘Big Steppin’ To An Bombastic ‘UPROXX Sessions’ Performance

On the latest episode of UPROXX Sessions, Bay Area rapper Stunnaman02 steps up to the mic to perform his viral hit “Big Steppin.” The breakout single has been a favorite of the Bay Area social scene, with everyone from San Francisco Mayor London Breed to 49ers mascot Sourdough Sam doing the associated dance.

The “Big Steppin” dance is also boiling hot on TikTok, home of such Soulja Boy-esque, star-making viral dance crazes, with over 38 million views since its release in June of last year. The success of that song will be a hard act to follow, but fortunately for Stunnaman, he’s also got a few side hustles, including his role in the A24 favorite The Last Black Man In San Francisco. He’s also got a clothing line and a self-produced juice drink, 02 Juice. Even though the Fillmore native is still just a regional favorite, he’s showing he has all the ingredients to produce a full-blown rap mogul in the making.

Biggie Wanted Nas And Busta Rhymes To Join Him On A Tupac Diss Track Produced By J Dilla

Of all the many rap beefs in the history of hip-hop, none has been as brutally dissected — and deadly — as Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac’s East Coast/West Coast spat. Things reached a head when Tupac dropped the supremely insulting “Hit ‘Em Up” in June of 1996, which besides being lyrically pointed at Big, Puff and Mobb Deep, rode samples of two Junior Mafia tracks in “Get Money” and “Player’s Anthem.”

While Biggie got his shots own shots in over the years (“Who Shot Ya?” came out months after Tupac was shot at Quad Studios in November of 1994, although Biggie never admitted it being pointed at Tupac), there was more in store from Biggie that never fully materialized the way he ended it to. In an interview with The Art Of Dialogue, Junior Mafia member and Biggie’s cousin, Lil Cease, shed more light on the epic beef and what might have happened if things went as planned:

“Big wasn’t gonna put forth a full effort into a whole full song dissing Tupac… Big was kinda more like just sprinkling on it,” Cease said of “The Ugliest,” a J-Dilla produced track that featured Busta Rhymes. Biggie delivered the verse, “And the winner is, not that thinner kid / Bandanas, tattoos, my fist never bruise / Land still cruise, Frank White paid his dues.” While Tupac wasn’t name-checked, it was clear who the lyrics was pointed at, and the diss was strong enough for Busta to not put the song on the album it was earmarked for, The Coming, but this was hardly the epic shot that Biggie thought he could take with a little help.

Cease says the original plan was for Nas and Busta to do the heavy lifting on the diss which could have really lit a fire under the beef. But that’s not how it went down.

“It’s not a diss if you don’t say their name. Ya gotta say somebody’s name if you wanna call it a ‘diss record’” Cease says. “If you’re just throwing subliminals, that’s only for that man to hear and figure out ’cause you’re gonna say something that only he would understand like, ‘Alright, he’s talking about me.’ Big didn’t say his name… It was for Busta Rhymes’ song at that. The song never came out — supposed to been Busta Rhymes, Nas and Big. It was produced by Q-Tip. But everybody never did their verse after Big did his. Nobody laid the verse on it, so the song kinda just pushed away. ”

Nevermind that Cease confuses Dilla with Q-Tip as the song’s producer (Tip was famously J Dilla’s manager), but had Nas and Busta joined Biggie in the spat, “The Ugliest” could very well have topped “Hit ‘Em Up” as the piece de resistance of the Tupac/Biggie beef.

Frank Ocean Fans Are Very Unhappy With Machine Gun Kelly’s Cover Of ‘Swim Good’

A new project from Frank Ocean has been on the horizon for years. Remember when he hinted at a new LP with his 2019 songs “DHL” and “In My Room“? Yeah, that never happened. Ocean’s fans were probably excited to see the musician’s name trending on Twitter Wednesday evening, presuming it be news about Ocean’s next release. So one can imagine their disappointment when they instead found a cover of “Swim Good” by none other than Megan Fox’s blood-drinking fiancé, Machine Gun Kelly.

Machine Gun Kelly has been very prolific when it comes to his own music, after having dropped his well-received Tickets To My Downfall and announcing yet another Travis Barker-produced album. But this week, the musician decided to take on Oceans’ Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape fan-favorite “Swim Good.” Machine Gun Kelly said it’s one of his “favorite” songs, and infused some of his now-signature pop-punk style into the cover. He also recorded a video to accompany the cover, which sees him wistfully singing the song against an ocean backdrop.

While Machine Gun Kelly was overjoyed to share the rendition, Ocean fans didn’t quite feel the same way. Sharing their disappointment about the cover on Twitter, people absolutely dunked on Machine Gun Kelly while taking it upon themselves to apologize to Ocean for his cover.

Cardi B May Have Won Her Dafamation Lawsuit, But Blogger Tasha K Is Still Fighting It

Cardi B has been involved in several lawsuits since rising to fame, but a big win came for her on Monday. A jury ordered blogger Tasha K, whose real name is Latasha Kebe, to pay the rapper $1.5 million in damages. The decision sided with Cardi, who claimed Kebe defamed her with false accusations about past sex work, STIs, and drug addiction. But even though Kebe lost the case, she apparently still plans on seeking an appeal — and vows to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Following the court’s decision Monday, Kebe took to her YouTube channel to promise fans she’s still fighting the lawsuit. “These last four years fighting this conspiracy case have been extremely challenging, and yet I wouldn’t change a single thing about any of it. I’ve learned so much,” she told her viewers.

Kebe went on to say she’s actually planning to expand her blogging business, saying the case was “meant to drain” her financially, but it didn’t.

“I know ya’ll maybe think this is over, but no, this is just the beginning,” she said. “I will spend as many years as I can to protect our right to voice our opinions. […] This trial was purely sympathy and payola to protect corporate interests, and we intend to take this all the way to the Supreme Court if need be.”

Cardi, on the other hand, celebrated her victory on Twitter. Rather than flaunting her win, Cardi simply said she hopes to speak with Meghan Markle, who won a privacy lawsuit against UK tabloid Mail On Sunday earlier this year.

Kanye West Announces The Palindromic Release Date For ‘Donda 2’

Not much is known about Kanye West’s upcoming album Donda 2 but at least now we know when it’s allegedly coming out. The mercurial producer/rapper shared the release date with a fiery Instagram post depicting his childhood home going up in flames — a repeated image from the rollout for the original Donda album — with the date “2/22/22.” The palindromic nature of the release is about par for the course for Ye, who I’m honestly surprised didn’t already fall heavily into numerology like Jim Carrey in The Number 23. He also says the album’s executive produced by Future.

Of course, with Kanye, release dates are more like guidelines than actual rules — shout out to The Pirate’s Code. The original Donda blew through three different release dates over the course of the year and a half in which Ye continued to tease it. This was after the chaotic release schedules of his 2018 G.O.O.D Music projects with Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Teyana Taylor, and Nas, which all arrived well after their promised release dates. So, while 2/22/22 makes for a cool-sounding release date, knowing Kanye’s penchant for tinkering, it’s probably best not to get your hopes up. Oddly enough, that’s also the release date for Kanye’s Yeezy collaboration with LA streetwear brand Skid Row Fashion Show, so perhaps he’s timing all these things together in the hopes of increasing exposure all around.

As for what the album will include… well… that’s anyone’s guess. He first teased the album with a text thread from Moneybagg Yo, so the Memphis rapper could feature on the project, and Ye did release the Pete Davidson-threatening “Eazy” this month, but that doesn’t mean either will actually appear on the album. The only thing that remains for sure is Kanye’s appetite for drama, and with this announcement, the latest round of rollout theatre can truly begin.
