The Newark Museum of Art (NMOA) is proud to announce the highly anticipated opening of its latest exhibition, “The Story of Newark Fashion: Atelier to Runway,” set to debut on February 22, 2024. This landmark exhibition, in development since 2021, marks the museum’s first large-scale showcase dedicated to contemporary American fashion, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and enduring legacy of Newark’s fashion scene.

Featuring the works of 11 fashion designers with strong connections to Newark, including iconic names such as Narciso Rodriguez, Stephen Burrows, and Project Runway finalist Shavi Lewis, the exhibition pays homage to the city’s deep roots in the garment and jewelry industries. Through a curated selection of designs, archival footage, and oral histories, “The Story of Newark Fashion” highlights the city’s pivotal role in shaping the global fashion landscape.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a simulated runway display, showcasing the groundbreaking designs of Newark-born Stephen Burrows. Renowned as one of the defining designers of disco-era fashion, Burrows’ influence reverberates through the fashion world. Nine of his garments, symbolically “walking” the runway in Paris, pay homage to his historic presentation at the Battle of Versailles in 1973, a watershed moment in fashion history.

In addition to Burrows’ contributions, the exhibition explores Newark’s rich history as a hub for creativity and innovation in the world of contemporary fashion for over 75 years. From the ateliers of trailblazing designers Wesley Tann and Emily Miles in the 1950s and 1960s to the contemporary designers shaping the industry today, Newark’s fashion legacy is celebrated and contextualized within the global fashion narrative.

Guest-curated by Kristen J. Owens, a historian of Black fashion, with Tracey “Africa” Norman serving as a curatorial advisor, the exhibition offers a comprehensive look at Newark’s fashion evolution. Norman, an international star of the runway and Newark native, lends her expertise and personal insight to the project, further highlighting the city’s enduring influence on fashion.

“It’s our great pleasure to bring together 46 stunning looks by two generations of Newark’s own fashion pioneers,” says Catherine Evans, Deputy Director, Collections & Curatorial Strategies, The Newark Museum of Art. “The heart of the exhibition installation will be a simulated runway with Stephen Burrows’ garments ‘walking’ the runway, a reference to his extraordinary role at The Battle of Versailles in 1973. In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got To Do With It, a brand new suite of special edition albums are to be released on April 26. The 4CD/1DVD boxed set will include the original album remastered on CD1, with CD2 featuring a collection of edits, remixes and acapella. CD3 and CD4 features Turner’s live show at the Blockbuster Pavilion in 1993 remastered, which can also be watched on the DVD along with three music videos. The boxed set also includes a poster and a 24-page booklet. Additional album formats include a 1-LP and 2-CD and is available to stream digitally. Pre-order here.

Originally released on June 15, 1993, What’s Love Got To Do With It was a commercial and critical success. The album was the soundtrack for the Tina Turner biographical film of the same name and reached No.1 in the UK, also making the top 10 in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Canada, and the top 20 in the US. The album went on to be a platinum record across the world, including the US, UK and Switzerland. It was a collection of songs, some of which were re-recorded from Turner’s ‘Ike & Tina Turner’ period, including “A Fool In Love,” as well as five brand new songs, one of which – “I Don’t Wanna Fight” – became a top 10 hit in both the US and UK. The album also includes Turner’s version of The Trammps’ disco classic “Disco Inferno,” a song she had often performed live in concert in the late 70s but never previously recorded in the studio. Two tracks from her 1984 breakthrough solo album Private Dancer are also included – the title track and a different re-mixed version of “I Might Have Been Queen.”

Her dedication and talent were spotlighted when she clinched victory at K 104.7’s Cupcake Wars and showcased her cupcakes at the Mother’s Day Cupcake Festival at the Legendary Renegades Baseball field, an experience she cherishes deeply. Corina’s dream is to offer a taste of another world through her desserts, inviting everyone to experience the layers of flavors she meticulously crafts into each bite.

Here’s how to create Corina’s delectable Vegan Vanilla Cupcakes, a perfect treat to sweeten your Valentine’s Day:

Ingredients:

177.5 ML of oat milk (any nondairy milk will do)
½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar
172 grams cake flour
150 grams organic cane sugar (avoid overfilling your cup to prevent overly sweet cupcakes)
½ tablespoon baking powder
3/8 teaspoon salt
56.5 grams melted vegan butter (unsalted)
½ tablespoon pure vanilla extract (opt for high-quality vanilla for the best flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the “Buttermilk”: Combine the oat milk and apple cider vinegar in a bowl to create a vegan buttermilk. Allow it to curdle, setting the foundation for your cupcakes’ moist texture.
  2. Melt the Butter: Gently melt the vegan butter, ensuring it’s cooled slightly before adding it to your mix.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the cake flour, organic cane sugar, baking powder, and salt, ensuring an even distribution of each element.
  4. Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the buttermilk mixture, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix to avoid a dense cupcake texture.
