Cunningham, the series started in 1980 with the release of the original film of the same name. Since then, it has become an essential part of pop culture and is often associated with Halloween. Above all, the Friday the 13th franchise is renowned for its inventive kills, iconic imagery, and the unstoppable nature of its antagonist. It is one of the most popular horror franchises in cinema history.

Jason Voorhees, the central character and main antagonist of the franchise, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic figures in horror cinema. He has terrified audiences for four decades and counting. The film series has churned out 12 installments and is evidently one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. Over the years, it has also become a cultural phenomenon and is a horror cinema staple.

12. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan(1989)

The eighth installment in the franchise, Part VIII was directed by Rob Hedden. The film takes the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, out of his usual setting and contrastingly places him in the bustling metropolitan city of New York. It provides a departure from the series’ usual campsite setting and shows a gritty portrayal of the Big Apple. After all, if the group of students who found Voorhees had left him alone, they would have stayed alive. The plot of Jason X is largely ridiculous; the film is quite enjoyable, albeit silly. Jason X is only a hard sell if too much is expected from it, so don’t have high expectations.

10. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Jason Goes to Hell was initially marketed as the final installment in the Friday the 13th franchise. It is the ninth entry in the series and immediately precedes Jason’s space odyssey in Jason X. The film also departs from the traditional Friday the 13th formula, delving into more supernatural elements. This particularly added a new layer to the story of Jason Voorhees. Throughout the movie, there are intense and gory sequences as Jason’s essence possesses various characters. According to TMZ, a website, 3 Wishes, is making serious bank capitalizing on this power couple. They have been selling solo Taylor Swift costumes for $27.95 and the Swift and Kelce couple costumes for $119.95. There were 500 of the solo ones and 300 of the matching set and they are totally wiped out. It is the website’s second-fastest-selling product ever. However, do not worry, more will be available on the 16th. Truly, this couple is reaching new heights by the second.

Earlier this year, Jamie Foxx suffered from some kind of major health scare while on set. While it wasn’t officially confirmed what happened many speculated in the months since. After an extended absence from the public eye during his recovery period, Foxx is getting back into the swing of things. Last month, cameras spotted him in Cabo enjoying a beach vacation with his girlfriend Alyce Huckstepp. Even though an insider reported that some of Foxx’s friends are concerned he could rush into marriage following his health scare, it’s still nice to see him looking fully healthy.

The Saw franchise has been a tremendous figure in the world of horror cinema. With its uniquely gory approach to storytelling, it has influenced subsequent films after it. Iconic in life and death, Michael Jackson’s discography has left a lasting impact on music history. His impact on pop culture is undeniable, and he is referred to as the King of Pop for good reason. However, in 1983, his reputation grew to accommodate an unofficial title—King of Halloween. When he released the universally acclaimed music video for “Thriller,” he forever changed the landscape for music videos in the industry. Forty years later, the song and music video are still widely referenced in modern media.

The Beginning Of “Thriller”

On November 2, 1982, Michael Jackson released his sixth solo studio album, Thriller. Jackson dropped seven singles from the project, including hit songs “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Human Nature.” The last single released was the eponymous track “Thriller.” However, the song was originally not intended to be released as a single, as Epic Records viewed it as a novelty. Additionally, the label was already satisfied with the successes of “Beat It” and “Billie Jean.” That is, of course, until album sales began to drop months after the album’s November 1982 release. Something had to be done, and in a spooky turn of events, “Thriller” came to the rescue.

Setting Up For Greatness

After deciding to make “Thriller” a single, Jackson had to recruit the right team to bring his vision to life through a music video. Consequently, he recruited the help of veteran director John Landis. Speaking with The A.V. Club, Landis revealed that Jackson was fascinated by his film, American Werewolf in London, which greatly inspired his conceptual portrayal of a werewolf. Landis not only directed the video for “Thriller,” but he also co-wrote it.

The duo conceived it to be a short film instead of just another regular music video. Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker handled the makeup for Jackson’s iconic transformations in the video. Ola Ray, a model, starred beside Jackson in the video and portrayed his girlfriend. Overall, the music video for “Thriller” was a massive production, and at the time, cost between $500k to $900k to make.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller Is Released

The 14-minute short film for “Thriller” had a limited theatrical release in late November 1983. In the last week of November, Michael Jackson’s Thriller opened for Disney’s Fantasia at a cinema in L.A. This was done so the feature would be eligible for the Oscars. After weeks of impatiently waiting to witness the spectacle of a video, fans finally got to see it in December. The short film had its worldwide debut on MTV on December 2, 1983, at midnight.

The music video for “Thriller” was an instant hit and impacted the entire world. Upon its release, sales for the Thriller album doubled. Ultimately, the short film significantly contributed in making Jackson’s sixth body of work the best-selling album in history. However, the pop star initially had reservations about releasing the video due to Michael Jackson’s background as a Jehovah’s Witness. The themes of the video clashed with his beliefs, and he allegedly had cold feet about releasing the movie. Nonetheless, he forged ahead with his plans. In his memoir, Moonwalk, Jackson revealed that he wanted to “be a pioneer in this relatively new medium and make the best short music movies we could make.”

“Murder Was The Case” was first released as a track on Snoop Dogg’s debut studio album, Doggystyle (1993). The following year, the iconic music video was released as a short film of the same name starring the rapper in the lead role. The song on its own was already quite spooky but watching Snoop Dogg converse with the devil in the video took it up a notch. That moment, in particular, is particularly scary, and a main highlight of the video. As the two strike the deal, Snoop Dogg’s character resurrects, spending the rest of his life in servitude to the devil.

“Martians Vs. Goblins” – The Game Ft. Lil Wayne & Tyler, The Creator (2011)

This song was released as a part of The Game’s fourth studio album, The R.E.D. Album in 2011. The Game and Tyler, The Creator star as two patients in a psychiatric hospital. Wayne holds down hook duties yet doesn’t appear in the music video. “Martians vs. Goblins” contains some attention-grabbing controversial lyricism from the MCs involved. The music video for Geto Boys’ classic song is simple but brilliant. The video follows a narrative structure spelled out by the song’s lyrics. Each member of the Geto Boys recounts their individual encounters with fear and paranoia. While the narrative style is vivid and immersive, the Geto Boys’ accentuate their anxieties in the song’s visual accompaniment. “Demons” – Doja Cat (2023)

Doja Cat recently released her latest album, Scarlet, after dominating 2021 with Planet Her. Doja was clearly in her horrorcore rap bag, and no other song proves it as much as “Demons.” As a standalone audio track, the song encapsulated high-octane rage. However, when paired with the music video, “Demons” becomes quite the spooky rap offering. Doja herself stars as a demon in the music video, and she delivers a very convincing performance. “Demons” is certainly one of the scariest music videos that deserves a play this Halloween.

The Halloween theme song is one of the most recognizable songs in pop culture. Since the original movie released in 1978 and the most recent entry in the franchise released in 2022, people have literally been hearing it for decades. Each movie in the series has its own version of the theme, but director and composer John Carpenter created the original. Fans of the series instantly recognize the foreboding piano melody, and even those who have never seen the movies know it means Michael Myers is near. Producers across the years have sampled the theme and used its creepy notes to create an eerie atmosphere for multiple songs. We’ve gathered five tracks that sampled the iconic theme and discussed how some even took their own creative liberties with it to make it their own.

“Murder Ink” – Dr. Dre feat. Hittman & Ms. Roq (1999)

Dr. Dre sampled the Halloween theme song on this beat which pulled many listeners in right away. It’s almost unrecognizable to those unfamiliar since it’s not played on a piano and the pitch of it is completely different. Producer S-Class created something Nipsey would still feel at home while simultaneously creating something unexpected. The context of the song itself has nothing to do with anything eerie or scary at all. It discusses the motivated and focused mindset most of Nipsey’s music was known for and all the features keep the theme mostly consistent in their verses. Cory Gunz opts to focus on wordplay syllabic schemes, which still sound good. June Summers’ hook connects the verses from the three artists. This track shows how the iconic theme can still be present and not take away from the rest of the things happening in the song.

“Deadly Verses” – Gangsta Pat feat. The Villain (1995)

Gangsta Pat is another Memphis artist that utilized the Halloween theme song, and in his case, the spooky feeling was quite strong. This is the title track from his album, which was released in 1995.
