Ice Spice Takes Over Governor’s Ball With Her Twerking, Fans Can’t Help But Thirst

Of the rising female rap stars in the game right now, few are running things like Ice Spice. Less than a year after blowing up thanks to “Feelin’ U (Munch),” a co-sign from Drake, and her bodacious bod, the 23-year-old has already secured her dream collaboration with Nicki Minaj. On top of that, she also had the opportunity to work with Taylor Swift on the “Karma (Remix),” making her the first rapper to drop a song with the country-turned-pop star. While the milestones she’s hitting are undeniably major, critics have still had plenty to say about her stage presence.

Not only have we seen Isis Gaston surprise fans during Swift’s Eras tour, but she also had a set of her own during Hot 97’s Summer Jam last Sunday. At the time she brought out friends like Kenzo B, Flo Milli, and Kaliii, which ultimately sparked a Twitter debate about why the artist with the fairest complexion has also been given the most opportunities. Elsewhere, some have criticized her for “lip syncing” at the event – reviews she’s also receiving for this weekend’s stop at Governor’s Ball.

Ice Spice Wears Double Denim For Governor’s Ball

While her endless twerking certainly caught the internet’s attention, several video clips prove how hard it can be to hear Spice over her music at times. Even so, she’s obviously taken note of those criticizing her performing abilities, turning up the heat with some of her most bootylicious choreography to date.

It’s certainly no RENAISSANCE World Tour, but still, the “Bikini Bottom” hitmaker has proven she’s willing to persevere and grow as her career continues to flourish. She previously hinted at sharing her debut album in 2023, though we have yet to hear any updates on that project in recent weeks.

Will Governors Ball Be Canceled Due To The Wildfire Smoke From Canada?

The 2023 Governors Ball festival is currently set to go down this weekend, at New York City’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park from June 9 to 11. That sounds like a fun time, but at the moment, there’s a major problem: Smoke from an ongoing Canadian wildfire has made its way down to NYC, creating an eerie and dangerous environment. The skies are currently a hazy orange color and the city’s air quality has officially been deemed “hazardous.”

So, with that in mind: Has Gov Ball been canceled due to the wildfire smoke from Canada?

As of this afternoon (June 7), the festival has not been canceled or postponed and is set to proceed as scheduled. In a statement shared today, festival organizers said, “We’re closely monitoring the air quality with weather experts and are in close contact with city officials. As always, the health and safety of New Yorkers is our top priority. At this time, the festival is continuing as planned. We are hopeful that conditions will improve in the coming days and are looking forward to a great weekend!”

As the festival approaches, interested parties should keep an eye on the Governors Ball social media pages for the latest status updates (here’s their Twitter and Instagram).

Assuming Gov Ball does go on this weekend, find the set times here.

Governors Ball Organizers Are Monitoring New York City’s Dangerous Air Quality, But They Haven’t Canceled The Festival Yet

New Yorkers and most of the Northeast are facing some seriously orange skies today as smoke from some Canadian fires filters down the coast. While most have been encouraged to stay inside and the city’s mayor calling it a “very unhealthy” air quality, it seems one NYC music festival is still hoping to run as scheduled this weekend.

The annual Governors Ball Music Festival is currently set for June 9 to 11 and have confirmed that they’re still hoping to welcome a bunch of fans to the festival grounds to see their favorite artists.

“We’re closely monitoring the air quality with weather experts and are in close contact with city officials,” a Governors Ball representative told Pitchfork. “As always, the health and safety of New Yorkers is our top priority. At this time, the festival is continuing as planned. We are hopeful that conditions will improve in the coming days and are looking forward to a great weekend!”

For reference, here’s a video taken in NYC today (June 7):

This is part of the festival’s pretty rough track record with battling the city’s weather throughout the years. In 2019, the festival had to be evacuated on the final day due to flooding from a storm. Three years prior in 2016, the fest’s Sunday run was outright canceled for a similar storm issue.

While they haven’t encountered poor weather in a few years, here’s hoping the smoke can clear up by then.

Lil Baby Joins Governor’s Ball 2023 Lineup, Teases New Music Coming Soon

January is already halfway over, which means festival season is rapidly approaching. To prepare for the coming months, several of the biggest events have already been unleashing their lineups, including Coachella. As far as east coast concerts go, Governor’s Ball is one of the first to show off its impressive roster of artists for the upcoming weekend of live tunes and fun in the sun.

It will take place in New York City’s Flushing Meadows Corona Park from June 9 – 11. The 2023 edition of the beloved festival is sure to bring in music lovers from various genres. Friday will see Lizzo headline after names like Lil Uzi Vert, Diplo, Omar Apollo, and Joey Bada$$ take the stage.

The next day, Odesza will have the final show of the evening. However, many are eager to see what Lil Baby will have in store for his set that same night. On Monday (January 16), the Atlanta native teased that he has “New Music Otw.” The news came via the caption of his latest Instagram upload.

The images find the My Turn hitmaker sporting a double denim look. He also wears a fluffy pink bucket hat on his head. While the photos don’t exactly reveal what we can expect to hear from him, it is evident that the father of two is feeling more confident than ever before.

Before his Saturday set at Governor’s Ball, attendees will also hear from Oliver Tree, Syd, Finneas, and Amber Mark.

For those that stick around for the festival’s final day, countless major performances are in store. Earlier in the day, acts like Phony Ppl, Sabrina Claudio, and Pinkpantheress will give it their all.

As if that weren’t enough, the evening will see shows from Tems, Central Cee, Pusha T, Giveon, Lil Nas X, and finally, Kendrick Lamar to end the weekend with a bang.

While several of the stars on the roster are causing excitement to buzz in the air, it’s Lil Baby who really has the hip-hop community talking. His last release came in the form of October’s It’s Only Me.

Since then, the most recent headlines surrounding the rapper have been about him unfollowing Gunna on Instagram in the midst of the YSL RICO drama. Read more about that here, and check back later for more music news updates.

How To Buy Governors Ball 2023 Tickets

Lots of great festivals are slated for 2023 — from Coachella and Rolling Loud to When We Were Young Fest and The Hangout Festival. Like Coachella, New York’s Governors Ball is still yet to announce their lineup. They also haven’t revealed information about tickets yet, but it looks like these details should arrive soon.

Earlier this year, they unveiled their roster of artists on January 25 alongside a pre-sale. The general sale was then two days later on January 27. Hopefully this means that next year’s will be announced around the same time, and it’s likely that the lineup and pre-sale will arrive at the same moment. Come the end of January, be prepared. Maybe even have their website bookmarked, and keep their Twitter handy.

The festival is taking place at Citi Field stadium from June 9 to 11. It was canceled in 2020 after announcing performers like Tame Impala, Missy Elliott, Vampire Weekend, and Miley Cyrus. But it returned strong in 2021 with headliners like Billie Eilish, ASAP Rocky, J Balvin, and Post Malone. This year’s was also a success, featuring headliners such as Kid Cudi, Halsey, and J. Cole. Halsey pleased the audience with a passionate cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” which experienced a resurgence in the spring after it played a crucial role in the plot of Stranger Things.

When Will Governors Ball’s 2023 Lineup Be Announced?

This year’s Governors Ball Music Festival generated plenty of headlines. Roddy Ricch earned a six-figure check for a set he missed after getting arrested on gun charges at the festival’s security checkpoint. Kid Cudi dropped his single “Do What I Want” ahead of his headlining set, and Halsey performed a cover of Kate Bush’s resurgent “Running Up That Hill.” Governors Ball 2023 is slated for June 10 through June 12 at Citi Field in New York City, but who will be the headliners?

Well, we don’t know. But we can make an educated guess. After taking 2020 off during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival shared that Billie Eilish, ASAP Rocky and J Balvin would headline in 2021 on May 4, 2021. But The 2022 lineup was unveiled on January 25, 2022, so recency bias indicates that the 2023 lineup announcement could come as early as next month.

Rolling Loud has gotten a head start. Rolling Loud California will be headlined by Playboi Carti, Travis Scott, Future, and Lil Wayne from March 3-5, 2023 at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California. Scott will also headline Rolling Loud Rotterdam alongside Kendrick Lamar from June 30 to July 1, 2023 at Rotterdam Ahoy.

You can sign up for alerts about Governors Ball 2023 on the festival’s official website.

What Are The Governors Ball 2023 Dates?

The Governors Ball Music Festival is set to return to New York next year, once again taking over the Citi Field stadium on June 9-11.

The Governors Ball Music Festival was launched in 2011 and encompasses popular music from a variety of genres including dance, hip-hop, and rock. Like most festivals, it was shut down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned in 2021 with a lineup headlined by Billie Eilish, ASAP Rocky, J Balvin, and Post Malone.

This year’s festival took place on June 10 through June 12 and was headlined by Kid Cudi, Halsey, and J. Cole. Halsey covered Kate Bush’s resurgent hit “Running Up That Hill” during her set, declaring she “truly wish I wrote this song.”

However, one performer fans missed out on was Roddy Ricch, who arrested prior to his set on gun charges, although possession of the weapon was unclear at the time and it possibly belonged to his security guard. When he returned to the stage for Hot97’s Summer Jam, he led the crowd in a “f*ck the NYPD” chant. Hopefully, 2023’s event won’t have any similar hiccups.

While there’s no additional information about the lineup yet, you can sign up for notifications at the festival’s website.
