The Rise To Fame With “Panda” & Collaboration With Kanye West

Desiigner exploded onto the music scene in 2016 with his infectious track “Panda.” The song’s success was stratospheric, topping charts globally and earning platinum status multiple times. Its popularity soared further when Kanye West sampled it for his album The Life Of Pablo. As a result, it drew widespread attention to Desiigner’s distinctive style and flow.

This collaboration led to Desiigner signing with Kanye’s label, G.O.O.D Music, marking a pivotal moment in his career. The partnership with the iconic rapper and producer propelled Desiigner into the spotlight. Through this, he was presented with numerous opportunities in the competitive music industry.

Producer No I.D.’s 7 Biggest Hits

Being dubbed the “Godfather of Chicago Hip Hop” is no easy feat, but No I.D. is more than deserving of the title. The producer worked his way to become one of the most acclaimed hit-makers of the 2000s and 2010s. Beyond it all, his music knowledge earned him the Presidency seat at G.O.O.D. Music between 2008 and 2011. Known for his collaborations with collaborations with Jay-Z and Kanye West, No I.D. has churned out a ton of hits over the years. However, these seven stand as some of the biggest songs he’s put his magic on.

“Bound 2” – Kanye West (2013)

“Bound 2” was never actually released as a single, but it evidently became one of the highlights on Yeezus. No I.D. was not the primary producer on the album, however, but a secondary co-producer, alongside Kanye West, Mike Dean, Noah Goldstein, Ché Pope, and Erick Danchick. The song was met with overwhelming praise and is considered one of Ye’s best tracks. “Bound 2” also enjoyed viral success after the release of its music video. West and Kim Kardashian, who were engaged at the time, both appeared in the passionate video. Kim, who was seen otpless, rode atop Kanye’s motorbike while facing him directly. “Bound 2” peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“Find Your Love” – Drake (2010)

Before Drake’s eventual world domination, he was on quite the rise in 2010. He released “Find Your Love” in May, right before the summer and it became a summer staple. Originally intended for Rihanna, the song appeared on Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later. “Find Your Love” was a joint production venture. No I.D., Kanye West, and Jeff Bhasker each contributed to the song’s distinct dancehall feel. The single performed very well in the United States, peaking at the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Furthermore, it has been certified 3x platinum for over three million units sold.

“My Last” – Big Sean feat. Chris Brown (2011)

Big Sean’s debut album was a lauded effort, and its success was largely in part its lead single. “My Last” was released in March 2011, but still enjoys a healthy rotation at many clubs and parties today. The single featured Chris Brown, who took on the infectious chorus. “My Last” was solely produced by No I.D., who was also the President of G.O.O.D. Music at the time. “My Last” peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, but reached the summit on the Hot Rap Songs chart. As aforementioned, it is one of No I.D.’s most notable tracks that has stood the test of time.

“Heartless” – Kanye West (2008)

No I.D. and Ye both co-produced this track. Furthermore, the former is credited as his birth name, Ernest Wilson, for co-writing as well. “Heartless” was released in 2008 and was one of West’s earlier notable tracks. It was released as the second single on Ye’s acclaimed, experimental fourth album, 808s & Heartbreak. Following the lead single, “Love Lockdown,” “Heartless” follows Ye’s auto-tune sung-rap style. Lyrically, the song details his sadness over his breakup with Alexis Phifer. “Heartless” was a hit upon release, also enjoying success on the charts of other countries. On the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at the penultimate spot.

“Run This Town” Jay-Z Ft. Kanye West & Rihanna (2009)

Upon release, “Run This Town” was lauded by fans. At the 2010 People’s Choice Awards, it took home the Favourite Music Collaboration award. The song also went on to win two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. No I.D. produced the song alongside Ye, and co-wrote with Hov, Rihanna, and Jeff Bhasker. “Run This Town” is one of the most popular tracks in No I.D.’s discography. Beyond the United States, the track peaked atop the UK Singles Chart. It also performed well in other parts of Europe, as well as in Canada.

“Let Me Hold You” – Bow Wow Ft. Omarion (2005)

Perhaps his first major hit as a producer, No I.D. scored mainstream success with Bow Wow’s “Let Me Hold You.” The track, which featured Omarion, became a huge radio favorite in 2005, and through the 2000s. “Let Me Hold You” was written by Jermaine Dupri, No I.D., who also worked on the song’s production. “Let Me Hold You” was also met with critical praise, particularly for the two artists’ evolving sounds. Brenda Russell was also credited as a songwriter, as the song sampled Luther Vandross’ version of her song, “If Only For One Night.” The song eventually peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached the summit on the Hot Rap Songs chart.

“Holy Grail” – Jay-Z Ft. Justin Timberlake (2013)

The Grammy-winning “Holy Grail” is widely considered one of the best rap songs of the 2010s. Jay-Z is joined by Justin Timberlake on the lauded track. At the beginning of the year, Timberlake had already featured Hov on another Grammy-winning track, “Suit & Tie.” Their second time around evidently proved to be yet another success. “Holy Grail” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, and finished the year as the 22nd most popular hit. No I.D. co-produced the song alongside The-Dream, Timbaland, and J-Roc.

Kanye West & Kid Cudi’s “Kids See Ghosts” Turns 5: A Standalone Classic

June 8th, 2023 marks the 5th anniversary of Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s self-titled collaborative album, Kids See Ghosts. Released on June 8, 2018, via Def Jam, Wicked Awesome, and G.O.O.D. Music, Kids See Ghosts was the third release from Kanye’s infamous 2018 “Wyoming Sessions.” Earlier that year, he recorded a series of 7-track albums at his ranch in Jackson Hole. Pusha T’s now-classic DAYTONA launched the campaign, followed by West’s Ye album. A week later Kids See Ghosts arrived in its entirety. Nas’s NASIR and Teyana Taylor’s KTSE preceded KSG and each of these projects was primarily produced by Kanye West, along with additional co-producers.

Kids See Ghosts contains features Pusha T, Ty Dolla $ign, and Yasiin Bey. Upon release, it was one of the most acclaimed albums from those Wyoming sessions. Although their first collaborative album, the working relationship between Kanye West and Kid Cudi created defining moments in hip-hop. Still, the two had a number of fallouts before joining forces as Kids See Ghosts. Here is a look back at the album for its anniversary.

The Result Of A Strong Chemistry

Before Kids See Ghosts came out in 2018, Kanye West and Kid Cudi had developed a close working relationship. From 2008-2013, Kid Cudi was one of the flagship artists signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music label, releasing his first three albums on the imprint. He was also the only artist on the G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Summer compilation to have his own solo track. Still, Cudi left an indelible imprint on Ye’s catalog, from 808s & Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to Yeezus, and The Life Of Pablo. Of course, Ye helped introduce Kid Cudi to the world, having heavily contributed to Kid Cudi’s first two studio albums, Man On The Moon: The End Of Day and 2010’s Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. Eventually, Cudi left G.O.O.D Music in 2013.

Kanye West and Kid Cudi have clearly influenced each other and brought the best out of each other on a track, which is what made Kids See Ghosts such a successful effort. Following 2015’s Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1, the two had publicly exchanged jabs before making up. Kids See Ghosts was an artistic triumph following the lukewarm reception to Kanye’s previous album and his pro-Trump rhetoric. The reconciliation between close collaborators is also what made the album so exciting. At 7 short songs and a 24-minute runtime, the album lived up to high expectations.

An Eclectic Blend of Sounds

The song “4th Dimension” contains a sample of Shirley Ann Lee saying that “you only want two and a half minutes” or “three minutes max” for a good song. Kanye West approached every 2018 project with this idea. Kids See Ghosts still manages to deliver enough quality music to make a strong impact with a short runtime.

The album featured Kanye’s best rapping out of the five Wyoming releases, easily surpassing Ye which was widely considered a disappointment by many. However, there are many similar sonic themes across the project. “Freeee,” for example, is a sequel to “Ghost Town” and certainly outshines its predecessor with the help of Ty Dolla $ign. However, compared to Ye, Kanye’s significantly more clever and focused. Similarly, Kid Cudi also sounds just as revitalized on this project. He sounded healed and confident, especially in emotional songs like “Reborn” and “Cudi Montage.”

Kids See Ghosts is unpredictable in its sound and approach, as evidenced by the explosive “Feel The Love,” “4th Dimension,” which flips a Christmas song, and the Kurt Cobain-sampling “Cudi Montage” — immediate highlights from the project.

A Standalone Classic

Much like their previous collaborations, the two brought the best out of each other. The production of Kids See Ghosts is eclectic and layered, drawing psychedelic influences and flipping obscure samples. However, they only delivered one rare performance of their album together at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in 2018. Unfortunately, four years later, they fell out once again. In 2022, Kanye West took issue with Kid Cudi’s friendship with Pete Davidson, who was dating Kim Kardashian amid her divorce from Ye.

Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s supposed final collaboration was on Pusha T’s “Rock N Roll” from 2022, which was recorded prior to their disagreements. Kid Cudi specified that he and Kanye would not work together in the future. Because of that, Kids See Ghosts stands on its own as a landmark collaboration for hip-hop in the 2010s. Five years later, the album sounds fresh as ever and its quality has not been matched by albums from Kanye and Cudi since.

Who is Desiigner?

New York rapper Desiigner made headlines recently after he exposed himself and masturbated while on a flight en route to Thailand. After the incident, Desiigner announced on social media that he was checking himself into a mental health facility for help. While the “Panda” rapper found great success in 2016 and the few years that followed, updates on the Desiigner’s life had been quiet until this recent incident. Although most Hip-Hop fans are familiar with hits such as “Panda” and “Timmy Turner,” little is known about the man behind them. Let’s take a look at Desiigner’s life and answer the question: Who is Desiigner?

Desiigner’s Early Life & Career

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – JUNE 05: Desiigner backstage at Hot 97’s Summer Jam 2016 at MetLife Stadium on June 5, 2016 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Johnny Nunez/WireImage)

Desiigner grew up in the Louis Armstrong housing projects of the Bed-Stuy neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. His grandfather was a famous blues musician named Sidney “Guitar Crusher” Selby. As a child, Desiigner sang in the school and church choir. Along with this, he began making music at age fourteen.

Desiigner’s original rap name was “Dezolo,” yet he eventually began releasing tracks under the name “Designer Royel.” Desiigner’s sister told him to drop the “Royel” and rap under the name Desiigner. On December 3, 2015, Desiigner released his debut song “Zombie Walk.” The song features production from The Shell God. Later that same month, he would release the song that led to his overnight success in “Panda.”

The Success Of “Panda”

Desiigner first released “Panda” to Soundcloud in December of 2015. Just five days later, “Panda” was available on all streaming sites. The initial buzz “Panda” created came from the similarities of Desiigner’s voice and rapping style to Future. When the song first hit the internet, many fans believed it was Future rapping, and Desiigner faced online backlash due to claims that he was “biting” Future’s flow.

Despite this, “Panda” found great success. Ironically, Desiigner purchased the beat for the song, which was produced by Menace, for $200 after finding it on YouTube. The hook of the song compares the look of a BMW X6 to that of a panda. In February of 2016, “Panda” was re-released to streaming sites and went from an internet hit to mainstream success.

In March of 2016, “Panda” debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts. Just nine weeks later, the song reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. At the time, Desiigner was only 18 years old, making him one of the youngest artists to ever have a No. 1 single. Along with this, Desiigner became the first rapper from New York in a decade to have a No. 1 single. The song’s success caught the attention of many top artists, as rappers such as Meek Mill, T-Pain, and Fabolous subsequently remixed the song. It also caught Kanye West’s attention who, at the time, ran the G.O.O.D. Music label.

Signing To G.O.O.D. Music & XXL Freshman List

NEW YORK, NY – AUGUST 28: Kanye West (L) and Desiigner attend the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards at Madison Square Garden on August 28, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)

In the midst of “Panda’s” success, Desiigner signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music label in February of 2016. Just days after he was signed, Kanye released his seventh album The Life Of Pablo, which featured Desiigner on two songs. The song “Pt. 2” featured “Panda” and gave even more exposure to the hit. The other feature came on the song “Freestyle 4.” In May of 2016, Mike Dean announced he would be the executive producer on Desiigner’s first full-length project and that it was in the works.

In June of 2016, Desiigner graced the cover of XXL as he made their “Freshmen Class” for 2016. His freestyle for XXL, “Timmy Turner” also made waves and eventually led to another hit song. In that same month, Desiigner’s debut mixtape New English was released on Tidal by G.O.O.D. Music. The mixtape received mixed reviews, yet it showed the label’s desire to push Desiigner into stardom. Despite this, the next few years displayed a decline in popularity for Desiigner.

“Timmy Turner” To Present Day

In July of 2016, Desiigner released his second hit “Timmy Turner.” The song was a full length track based on Desiigner’s XXL freestyle. While it did not reach the same heights as “Panda,” “Timmy Turner” did reach No. 98 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and is certified Platinum. A remix of the song was also released and features Kanye. However, despite the successes of both songs, Desiigner would not release another single until February 2017 with “Outlet.”

After this, Desiigner would only release one other project, an EP titled L.O.D. in 2018. By 2018, it seemed that Desiigner’s short-lived fame was all but over. While the rapper continued to release singles, no full-length projects were in the works and nothing the rapper dropped could reach the heights of “Panda” or “Timmy Turner.” In addition to this, Desiigner left the G.O.O.D. Music label in 2019.

Desiigner explained his reasons for leaving G.O.O.D. Music in an interview with DJ Vlad in 2022. In the interview, he stated, “The reason why I left Ye is ’cause I was going through a little mental thing. I was just coming up out of high school, my pops just went into a coma. While I was on tour, I was having a great time but I just knew something at home was happening with my mom and my pop’s health and shit. So it was just like, I wanted Ye to talk to and it was hard to speak on it.”

Since then, Desiigner has continued to make music and tour. With his recent incident, the rapper seems to be spending more time focusing on his mental health and recovery. In addition to this, on May 3, Desiigner stated that he is currently at a mental health facility. Let’s hope that Desiigner can get back on his feet and continue to pursue his musical career.

Lloyd Banks Reveals He Nearly Signed With G.O.O.D Music

Lloyd Banks has revealed that his career in the early 2010s could have been very different. Banks has been in the news a lot as of late. He is currently promoting his upcoming album The Course Of The Inevitable III (Pieces Of My Pain). The G-Unit co-founder announced this week that the project would be released next Friday. Fans have been eager for Banks to drop something new Additionally, many will be waiting to see if the project can vault the 40-year-old back into the mainstream, Subsequently, Banks is now telling the story of the time he nearly linked up with Kanye West on the G.O.O.D Music label.

The Hip Hop Wolf recently shared a video of an interview Banks did with the Rap Radar Podcast. Banks revealed that were plans in the works for a G-Unit and G.O.O.D Music album. “it was supposed to be a G-Unit G.O.O.D. Music type of situation, ‘Christion Dior Denim Flow,’” he said. A collab between G-Unit and Kanye would surely have been legendary. However, Banks says the deal fell through. “I was on other records too, they never came out or whatever, the business didn’t get done. But yeah, that was probably like 2010/11,” he said. If Banks’ timing is correct, that would have been around the time of his third solo album.

Lloyd Banks Says Deal With G.O.O.D. Music Fell Through

Indeed, Hunger For More dropped in early 2010. Kanye himself is featured on the album. The project’s third single “Start it Up” features vocals from Ye and numerous other artists. The song performed decently on the charts, peaking at number 52 on the Hot 100. Although the album was well received, it didn’t generate the same buzz as Banks’ previous efforts.

However, Banks hasn’t fallen off completely. The “I’m So Fly” rapper has retained a loyal fan base over the years. Additionally, people always check in whenever any of the G-Unit alumni are working on something. Meanwhile, it is hard not to speculate where he would be if he had linked with Kanye in a greater capacity. That notwithstanding, Banks was part of one of the most influential groups in hip-hop history. He deserves his flowers regardless of how his next project performs. Moreover, It is unlikely that his supporters are going to count him out any time soon.

Consequence Reflects On Being “Furious” With Q-Tip For Signing With Kanye West

Consequence recently reflected on his beef with Q-Tip during an interview with VladTV. He explained that he felt the legendary A Tribe Called Quest rapper betrayed him by signing with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music back in the day. Cons had just left the label on infamously bad terms.

“I didn’t get any records for Cons TV,” Cons said, referring to his shelved sophomore album, “And maybe not even a year later, ironically, Q-Tip was a G.O.O.D. Music artist and saying that there was going to be a Cruel Winter, which never came out. That was the shadiest shit ever. It was! I mean, he and I resolved it, but it was shady as fuck. And from the person who said, ‘Industry rule No. 4080: record company people are shady,’ and you did that to your cousin? A n***a who would’ve done anything for you?”

From there, he explained that he was about to become a father at the time and needed support from his family. “He knew I was having a baby at the time ’cause this is when Caiden was being born. I was furious, yo. I was fu-ri-ous,” he added. “I was more mad about that than with The Ummah [Q-Tip’s production team with J Dilla and Ali Shaheed Muhammad] not coming out because this is my block. I put in the work for this block to be a block; it wasn’t a block when I got here. Even to this day, that’s why you see me take the positioning that I take. I’m a person who can forgive, but I will acknowledge what has occurred. I’m not the secret-keeper and I’m not sweeping nothing under the rug — those are two things I am not doing as a grown man.”

Consequence has since made amends with both Kanye West and Q-Tip. In a statement released back in 2011, Cons explained that he and Q-Tip sat down and discussed things at length. “After a very intense & extensive meeting, Q-Tip & myself have resolved our public & private issues,” he said. “With so many manufactured ‘beefs’ in Hip Hop, this situation was very real and shows that their can be resolution through humility & dialogue.”
