Frank Ocean Made A Surprise Comeback With Two New Episodes Of Blonded Radio

Today is the 10th anniversary of Frank Ocean’s breakthrough album, Channel Orange. What better time than now for Ocean to return from his reclusive state with new episodes of his Blonded Radio on Apple Music 1.

Streaming now and on demand, Blonded Radio came back at 4:30pm PT on Sunday night July 10th. While this isn’t the announcement of a new Frank Ocean album that everyone has been hoping for, it certainly indicates that Ocean is back on a creative tip again. Blonded has been the grounds for Ocean to drop one-off new material and experiment while he pushes towards the long-anticipated follow-up to Blonde, which came out in 2016. The last episode of Blonded Radio came out on Christmas 2021.

A release from Apple was sparse, but was very clear in saying that “New episodes of Frank Ocean’s blonded RADIO arrive today at 4:30pm PT, only on Apple Music.” The fact that Apple Music is referring to “episodeS,” in the plural sense, indicate that there is more to come here after Sunday night’s comeback pair.

The first 35 minutes of the first episode, “blonded LSD,” was an “original score” by Ocean set to a conversation about micro-dosing and psychedelics with Dr. James Fadiman. The second episode, “blonded ENERGY” began shortly thereafter with a different score by Ocean, set to a conversation with Qigong teacher, Mingtong Gu.

People were thoroughly confused on social media when the first episode dropped. “Listening to new blonded radio and it’s just a speech about doing drugs over a dance beat. Im here for the Frank Ocean psychedelic arc,” one user said.

Lil Nas X Compares Himself To Frank Ocean And Tyler The Creator While Discussing ‘Homophobia In The Black Community’

At the moment, Lil Nas X has beef with the BET Awards after he didn’t get a single nomination for this year’s show. He was so incensed, in fact, that he dropped a diss track about BET. The network went ahead and issued a response, in which they noted the previous times Nas was nominated at the BET Awards and declared themselves “passionate advocates for the wonderful diversity that exists within our community.”

Still, Nas has more to say, but about the Black community at large beyond just BET, as he took to Twitter to discuss homophobia (a particularly relevant topic right now given we’re a week into Pride Month).

Yesterday afternoon, he tweeted, “this not over no bet award this is about the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community, y’all can sit and pretend all u want but imma risk it all for us.” Hours later, a Twitter user made note of Frank Ocean and Tyler The Creator’s previous nominations and Nas responded, “love frank and tyler to death but can we admit queer men are more respected when they do less feminine things or am i making that up?”

Somebody else responded by implying that Nas didn’t get a nomination this year because his “music sucks,” but the rapper got the conversation back on track, replying, “ok cool i suck, my music is terrible, bad nas. now answer the question ‘are queer men are more respected when they do less feminine things’ yes or no?”

Somebody else jumped in, “you’re not making it up but when will gay men understand they can be gay w/o making it their whole personality? now you act like a female rather than you just liking men and that’s where people are put off.” To that, Nas replied, “gay men should continue making being gay their whole personality as long as we are still being jailed n fckin killed in countries for it.”

Meanwhile, BET shared a gallery of images and videos of Nas on social media last night, declaring, “This is bigger than the #BETAwards. This is real life and we will always rock with Lil’ Nas X and stand for our people.” Nas wasn’t moved by that, as he responded this morning, “these are literally just buzz words placed together.”

Frank Ocean Is In Talks With A24 And 2AM About Writing And Directing His Own Feature Film

Frank Ocean is reportedly in talks with A24 and 2AM about writing and directing his own feature film, according to Discussing Film. The “Nikes” singer has always been open about his interest in filmmaking; he wrote and directed the 46-minute Endless, which streamed alongside his album of the same title in 2016.

It doesn’t stop there. He also interviewed Timothée Chalamet because he enjoyed Call Me By Your Name so much, he covered “Moon River” from the 1961 movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s, and in the Chalamet interview, he expressed interest in recording a film score someday.

Frank has also been reportedly shopping a new record around to labels. It seemed like he was gearing up to head into album mode back in 2019 when he shared both “DHL” and “In My Room,” but it’s likely the pandemic got in the way of any planned releases in early 2020. Though, he did put out another pair of singles in March of 2020, releasing “Dear April” and “Cayendo.”

During a recent Christmas episode of his Apple Music radio show, he also shared another new nine-minute track. Still, the best timeline we have for his new album is pegged to his rumored headlining slot at Coachella 2023. So it makes the most sense that even if we get a few new singles this year and in early 2023, the project would drop close to his appearance at the biggest festival in the world.
