On this date in 2020, New York-based radio station Hot 97 terminated one of its longtime employees after it was revealed that he played a role in the death of 16-year-old Yusuf Hawkins in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.

Pasquale Raucci, who is better known on the airwaves as “Paddy Duke,” was fired from Hot 97 after HBO documentary Storm Over Brooklyn unveiled that Raucci was a member of the white mob of teenagers who killed Hawkins while he was in the mostly Italian neighborhood seeking to purchase a car.

Raucci was shown in Storm Over Brooklyn, detailing his hiring at the station in 1994 and his close work with award-winning on-air personality Angie Martinez.

After the release of the documentary, Hot 97 made a statement about the firing of Raucci, stating, “After watching HBO’s Storm over Brooklyn, HOT97 was shocked and took swift action. Paddy Duke is no longer employed by HOT97. The march for social justice continues.”

Duke was fired the day after the 31st anniversary of Hawkins’ murder.

Today in Hip Hop History: Tha Alkaholiks Dropped Their Debut Album ’21 & Over’ 31 Years Ago

TodayInHipHopHistory:ThaAlkaholiks'DebutAlbum'&Over'TurnsYearsOld!

On this date in 1993, J-Ro, Tash, and E-Swift, the West Coast collective known as Tha Alkaholiks, released their premiere album 21 & Over on Steve Rifkind’s Loud/RCA imprint.

Founded by West Coast legend King Tee, Tha Alkaholiks and their music are recognized as the epitome of Cali party music, with the clinking bottles and drunken burps as the backdrop. The 21 & Over project served as one of the few examples of West Coast Hip Hop that wasn’t oversaturated with California gang life. Instead, Tha Liks were a part of the Cali movement of MCs who had to prove their lyrical skills were competitive compared to their East Coast counterparts.

The ten-track classic is less than 40 minutes in length. Still, the drunken style theme is maintained throughout the entire project, with sure shot singles like “Last Call,” “Make Room,” and “Likwit” that solidified Tha Liks as a force from the West that continues to be recognized for their contribution to the game.

Salute to King Tee and the crew for churning out this timeless Hip Hop classic!

Diddy Among Investors Who Helped Elon Musk Purchase Twitter, New Legal Documents Reveal

Screen Shot 2024 08 24 at 8.49.59 AM

Newly unsealed legal documents have shed light on an unexpected connection between two of the most influential figures in business and entertainment: Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and Elon Musk. According to TMZ, the Bad Boy Entertainment CEO was one of the investors who helped Musk acquire Twitter, now rebranded as X, for a staggering $44 billion in 2022.

The documents, made public on Wednesday, list nearly 100 entities as shareholders in the platform. Diddy’s involvement is noted under ‘Sean Combs Capital, LLC,’ alongside other high-profile names such as hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, Saudi Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, and Twitter’s original founder, Jack Dorsey.

While the exact amount Diddy invested in the platform remains unclear, this revelation comes at a time when the music mogul is facing serious legal troubles. Diddy, once a dominant force in the music industry, is now embroiled in sexual trafficking and assault allegations, casting a shadow over his once-glittering reputation.

The disclosure of this list follows a motion filed by independent tech journalist Jacob Silverman, who sought transparency on the matter in the public’s interest. The unsealing of the shareholders’ list also coincides with ongoing legal battles between former Twitter employees and the company, who claim that Twitter violated their arbitration agreements after Musk’s takeover.

Diddy and Musk’s relationship isn’t entirely new, as the two were spotted together at a Dave Chappelle comedy show in 2022. However, the full extent of Diddy’s financial involvement in Musk’s acquisition of Twitter has only now come to light.

As of August 2024, it remains unclear who among these investors still holds shares in the company. With both men navigating turbulent times—Musk with the challenges of his X rebranding and Diddy with his legal issues—this revelation adds another layer of complexity to their public narratives.

Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn ‘Scandal’ Stars Appear Together at DNC

image

The DNC had everybody pull up. Felt like Kendrick’s concert. Joking.

Anyway, ”Olitz” fans were thrilled to see Kerry Washington and her “Scandal” co-star Tony Goldwyn reunite on stage at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday night.

You may know, Kerry Washington, who famously portrayed crisis manager Olivia Pope in the Shonda Rhimes political drama, took the stage to rally support for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and encourage people to vote. Addressing the crowd, Washington said, “As I stand here, I know that there are folks on social media already saying ‘Go back to your TV show. Shut up and act.’ But I am not here tonight as an actor. I am here as a mother, as a daughter, as a proud union member.” Her words were met with enthusiastic applause.

She continued, “I am here as the granddaughter of immigrants, as a Black woman descended from enslaved people. I am here tonight because I am an American and because I am a voter and because we, the people, are stronger when all our voices are heard.”

After her speech, Tony Goldwyn, who played President Fitzgerald Grant III on “Scandal”, joined Washington on stage to take a selfie video with her and the excited crowd. Washington asked the crowd, “Are you ready for Kamala Harris to win?” to which they responded with a resounding “Yes.”

Of course, the reunion sparked nostalgia among fans, with one writing, “Let me go re-watch “Scandal” cause it’s giving NOSTALGIA,” and another saying, “Olitz on #TGIT? The country needs it! I would be even more grateful if the rest of the gladiators made an appearance…and Papa Pope.”

We hear the fans and we’re here for it.

Since “Scandal” ended, Washington and Goldwyn have remained close, often exchanging friendly jabs on social media and in interviews. Their on-screen relationship, known for its intensity and complexity, continues to resonate with fans.

Sounds like a great time at the DNC.
