Today in Hip-Hop History: UGK Released Their First Studio Album ‘Too Hard To Swallow’ 31 Years Ago

Too Hard to Swallow

On this date in 1992, Bun B and Pimp C put out their first studio release Too Hard To Swallow and began their extremely successful career as Underground Kingz.

With UGK (short for Underground Kingz) being one of the first rap groups to come out of Texas to be regarded nationally, it’s easy to see how important it is to the South. At this time in the early 90s, there wasn’t much coming from anywhere other than New York or California. The only southern rappers that had hits were fellow Texas natives Geto Boys and Miami-based rappers 2 Live Crew. When this album dropped, it opened up a door for a whole new wave of southern rap to emerge.

Unlike the funkier, sample-heavy beats that UGK became known for rapping over later in their career, this album is true to its name as far as its production. The beats are a lot more aggressive and so is the lyricism. Nevertheless, this album is full of hits that are considered classics of the group’s catalog. These three tracks are “Something Good”, “Use Me Up” which hails a Bill Withers sample, and “Pocket Full of Stones”, which appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 hood classic, Menace II Society.

The album was recorded over a year period from 1991 to 1992 and released on November 9th, 1992 under Jive Records, the early 90s powerhouse label hosting acts such as E-40, A Tribe Called Quest, R.Kelly, and the late Aaliyah. The album has so far sold 369,511 copies and peaked at 37th on the Billboard US R&B Charts. After this album, UGK went on to put out five albums until the untimely passing of member Pimp C in 2007.

Big Pun

Born on this day in 1971 in Bronx, NY, Terror Squad lieutenant Christopher ‘Big Pun” Rios grew from an exceptional emcee that stood side to side by Fat Joe during his Jealous One’s Still Envy heyday to morphing into one of the game’s greatest lyricists of all time.

Big Punisher initially entered the rap game in the mid-80s as a member and founder of underground hip-hop collective Full-A-Clips and at the time, went under the moniker Big Moon Dawg, which was drawn from a famed pro wrestler with the same name. Recordings from the collective have been concealed and remain unreleased, but are known to be the earliest recordings of the late Puerto Rican emcee.

After Pun received a Grammy for “I’m Not A Player”, the full-length, double-disc version of his debut Capital Punishment was released the following year,. The album went platinum causing Pun to make history as the first Hip Hop solo act of Latino descent to achieve the mark.

On February 7th, 2000 during a momentary stay at Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains, New York, Pun faced a fatal heart attack and respiratory failure. He weighed 698 pounds at the time of his death, the highest weight in his lifetime. He withdrew from a Saturday Night Live performance two days prior where he was scheduled to perform with Fat Joe and Jennifer Lopez.

Celebrating the Beat: The Origin and Importance of National Hip Hop Month

National Hip Hop Month

Hip hop, born in the Bronx in the late 1970s, has transcended its humble beginnings to become a global cultural force. While the genre has always been celebrated and revered, it wasn’t until recently that it gained official recognition through National Hip Hop Month. This November, we delve into the origin and importance of this cultural celebration.

Origins of National Hip Hop Month

The roots of hip-hop as a cultural movement date back to the South Bronx in the early 1970s. A combination of turntablism, emceeing, breakdancing, and graffiti art gave birth to this new form of expression. Hip-hop rapidly spread across the boroughs of New York City and beyond, becoming a platform for marginalized communities to voice their experiences, challenges, and hopes.

National Hip Hop Month traces its origins back to November 2001 when the Hip Hop Cultural Center, led by DJ Kool Herc and Rocky Bucano, petitioned the U.S. Congress to officially recognize November as the month to celebrate hip hop culture. This move aimed to acknowledge hip-hop’s cultural significance and its positive impact on countless lives, especially in underserved communities.

Importance of National Hip Hop Month

Cultural Preservation: National Hip Hop Month plays a vital role in preserving hip-hop culture’s history, values, and stories. This recognition ensures that the legacy of hip-hop artists and pioneers is remembered and celebrated for generations to come.

Empowerment and Education: Hip-hop is a powerful tool for empowerment and education. It allows individuals to express themselves creatively, build self-confidence, and learn about social and political issues. National Hip Hop Month highlights the importance of hip-hop as an educational tool, inspiring the next generation to engage with this dynamic art form.

Celebrating Diversity: Hip-hop is a diverse and inclusive culture that brings people of all backgrounds together. National Hip Hop Month recognizes the contribution of artists from various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, emphasizing the importance of diversity and unity.

Social and Political Commentary: Hip hop has been a vehicle for addressing important social and political issues. From N.W.A.’s “F*** Tha Police” to Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” hip hop has been a platform for artists to speak out against injustice and inequality. National Hip Hop Month highlights the genre’s role as a social and political commentator.

Economic Impact: Hip hop is a billion-dollar industry that has created jobs and opportunities for countless individuals. It has propelled artists to stardom and fostered entrepreneurship in various sectors like fashion, film, and technology.

Inspiration and Aspiration: Many young individuals aspire to become hip-hop artists, producers, or entrepreneurs. National Hip Hop Month inspires the next generation to pursue their dreams, emphasizing that they can achieve their goals with hard work, creativity, and determination.

In conclusion, National Hip Hop Month is not just a celebration of music and dance; it’s a celebration of culture, diversity, empowerment, and expression. It recognizes the art form’s influence on society, from political activism to economic growth. As we celebrate National Hip Hop Month this November, let’s remember the pioneers, artists, and communities that have shaped this incredible cultural movement and continue influencing the world.

Nicki Minaj Covers Dec. Issue of Vogue Magazine Ahead of ‘Pink Friday 2’

Nicki Minaj Covers Dec. Issue of Vogue Magazine

Ahead of the Pink Friday 2 album release, Nicki Minaj covered the new edition of Vogue magazine. Inside, she details how her world changed with the arrival of her son, affectionately known as Papa Bear.

Nicki Minaj has updated the release date for Pink Friday 2, making it available to fans on her birthday. Minaj shared the details in an Instagram Live session, setting the release date for Dec. 8.

“This entire album will be the biggest gift I’ve ever given humanity thus far,” Minaj said. “I can stand by that. I will bet any amount of money that Pink Friday 2, the album, is going to make people fall in love immediately.”

Nicki Minaj fans have been waiting for quite some time for the release of her highly-anticipated project, Pink Friday 2. Most recently, Queen Barbie herself went Live to her 227 million followers on Instagram to talk about the new project and its coinciding tour. Not only does she let fans into a little bit of her creative process behind her new release, she always explains that this Pink Friday 2 tour will be “greater than every other tour combined.”

Which is saying a lot! Given her Young Money labelmate Drake recently shut down arenas all over the world on his It’s All A Blur Tour.

Nick states, “Even though this album is called Pink Friday 2, even though we love the nostalgia, this will not remind you of another tour. That’s how I’ll say it. I mean, it’s gonna be greater than every other tour combined — like this album. This will be a very different feeling tour, even if you’ve been to every Nicki Minaj tour that’s ever existed. Because there are certain things that I always do similar in all my tours. This time, it’s going to be a completely different perspective.”

We can’t help but wonder exactly what this means, whether she’s talking about her performance style or her set design. But one thing’s for sure: it sounds like she’s putting a lot of time and effort into giving fans an unforgettable show!

“In addition to it being, of course, a whole new album, the approach to the tour will be very different and the feel of the tour will be very different. We still gon’ cover all the ground that is required to cover in order for y’all to know that you fucking with the best, but it won’t remind you of another tour.”

The Pink Friday 2 Tour dates have yet to be announced, but Nicki has previously revealed it should start somewhere in the first quarter of next year. In the meantime, we wait patiently for the arrival of Pink Friday 2 on November 17th, marking her first album in five years.

Fans can pre-save the album here.
