Set to launch this upcoming spring semester, the course, titled “Beyoncé Makes History: Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory & Politics Through Music,” aims to explore Beyoncé’s influence on Black intellectual thought, activism, and culture.

As universities increasingly turn to pop culture to examine societal themes, Yale joins a growing number of institutions offering courses on celebrity cultural impact, following the likes of Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. This course will dive deep into Beyoncé’s mid-career repertoire, beginning with her groundbreaking self-titled 2013 album through to her latest work, “Cowboy Carter.” Through the lens of these albums, students will investigate Beyoncé’s performance politics, concert films, and the broader societal conversations her art generates.

Drizzy Named Fourth Greatest Pop Star of 21st Century By Billboard – WOW.

Screen Shot 2024 11 12 at 3.06.56 PM

Here we go with the controversy or maybe not … Okay, Drake has just been ranked as the No. 4 Greatest Pop Star of the 21st Century in Billboard’s ongoing countdown. Hell of a ranking but let’s be real, is this a stretch. Probably not. As you can imagine, the placement that has sparked both praise and controversy among fans and critics. The Hotline Bling artist now occupying a spot above other global icons such as JAY-Z, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears. This is pop we’re talking about so the Bieber argument, we can understand the argument, maybe but he’s been a bit MIA the last several years. Gaga, that’s a discussion. But Drake is well, Drake. And his accolades and impact is really indisputable.

Get this, as with any ranking, reactions to the list have been really divided. What else is new. In pop culture, politics or otherwise, people don’t agree on much.

Many of Drake’s supporters, particularly members of his OVO fanbase, were quick to defend his position. “Numbers-wise he’s outta here,” one user wrote, while another fan pointed out, “Well deserved [goat emoji]. Bro has almost 80 top 10 singles lmao. He’s like the LeBron of Billboard hits.” Others highlighted his chart dominance, with one person commenting, “The bias is insane smh. Drake deserves to be top 2. The hate against him is unreal after everything he has achieved on Billboard plus his longevity.”

We concur.

However, not everyone agreed with Drake’s high ranking. Some fans felt it was unjust for him to be placed above pop legends like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. “Drake being above Britney and Gaga on the list for the greatest 21st century POP stars is nasty fkin work… everything is a fkin joke!” one user wrote. A common critique centered on the idea that Drake, being primarily a rapper, doesn’t fit the mold of a “pop star.” Many echoed this sentiment, arguing that his dominance in rap shouldn’t equate to top-tier pop status.

Not a pop star? Have they heard Drake on the melodies? Ha.

Billboard, however, emphasized the historic nature of Drake’s chart success to justify his position. The outlet highlighted his unprecedented achievements, including 13 No. 1 singles on the Hot 100 and 13 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, an accomplishment shared only with The Beatles — a group Drake famously honored with a tattoo after surpassing one of their Billboard benchmarks in 2019. The article also noted Drake’s unparalleled career total of 338 Hot 100 entries, a record he first broke in 2020 and has since expanded year after year.

Um, we concur – again.

As the rankings continue, many music fans on X (formerly Twitter) are speculating about who might take the top spots, with Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna emerging as the most likely contenders.

Likely, yes. So let’s see.

It’s been a wild time for Ray J lately. Earlier this month, he confirmed an encounter between him and Diddy’s sons. Earlier in the week, TMZ detailed an incident at a Halloween party where Diddy’s sons were about to fight Ray J.

The three Combs sons, Christian, Quincy, and Justin, were at Tara Electra’s Unruly Agency Halloween bash on Halloween, and it truly almost got unruly. The Combs clan saw Ray J outside the party, as he was with Amber Rose and his manager, David Weintraub. The trio surrounded Ray J, upset about his comments about Diddy.

As the altercation escalated, with Christian and Justin reportedly eager to fight, Chris Brown, who was nearby in his car, allegedly diffused the situation and ran over to break up the fight.

After Breezy, others stepped in to prevent the incident from escalating. TMZ sources reveal this is not the first altercation between Ray J and Diddy’s sons.

Ray J spoke on the incident with Wack 100, saying, “I tried to talk some sense into what happened. Luckily, the homie Chris was there.”

Ray J claims it was eight people in the Combs party when they approached him. You can hear it all below.

2025 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Inductees: N.W.A., Eminem, Janet Jackson and More

Screen Shot 2024 11 12 at 1.30.23 PM

It’s all about the pen game. The Songwriters Hall of Fame has revealed its list of nominees for the Class of 2025, with hip-hop icons N.W.A. and Eminem, as well as R&B legend Janet Jackson, leading the pack. On Tuesday, November 12, the organization unveiled this year’s nominees, which span multiple genres, including country, rock, folk, and pop.

Get this, in addition to the three headline names, the list includes influential figures like funk pioneer George Clinton, hit-making producer and songwriter Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow, and celebrated rock artist Alanis Morissette.

Now just so you understand the magnitude of this honor, to be eligible for induction into the prestigious Hall of Fame, a songwriter or performer must have released their first commercial song at least 20 years ago. Voting for the 2025 class is now open and will close on December 22 at midnight ET. Voters can select up to three nominees from both the songwriter and performer categories.

What’s more, over the past few years, the Songwriters Hall of Fame has increasingly recognized hip-hop artists for their groundbreaking contributions to music. The trend began in 2017 when Jay-Z made history as the first rapper to be inducted into the Hall. His induction was a momentous occasion, celebrated by many, including former U.S. President Barack Obama. Reflecting on his admiration for Jay-Z, Obama shared, “I sampled his lyrics to close my speech at Selma… I tweeted a reference to ‘My First Song’ as I was putting the finishing touches on my final State of the Union Address. I had to brush some ‘dirt off my shoulders’ during a campaign.”

Obama added with a smile, “I’m pretty sure I’m still the only President to listen to Jay-Z’s music in the Oval Office. That may change at some point, but I’m pretty sure that’s true now.” TBH, he’s probably right.

But wait, other hip-hop legends who have been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame include Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, and The Neptunes.

Taking it back just a year, the 2024 class of inductees included an eclectic mix of talents, such as rock icons R.E.M., Steely Dan, and SZA, as well as established songwriters like Hillary Lindsey, Diane Warren, and Cindy Walker.

Iconic Flows: Young Thug’s Verse: ‘The London’

Screen Shot 2024 11 12 at 1.11.10 PM

Ya’ll remember back in 2019 when Young Thug dropped The London feat. J. Cole and Travis Scott? It pretty much slapped. It was one of those ones where everything from the beat, Travis’ catchy hook and both Cole and Thug’s verses just worked. From radio to the club it was a banger. Not for nothing, The London was a rare super commercial record that even J. Cole had to hop on. What else can we say? It just kept your head on a swivel. Oh and in case you didn’t know, The London is actually a popular hotel within Los Angeles … IYKYK.

When it came to the charts, they kept it honest. Here’s how the record faired on Billboard:

US Billboard Hot 100: Peak position of 12

US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: Peak position of 6

US Rhythmic: Peak position of 5

Outside of the commercial success, The London was vintage Thugger and his flow was nothing short of iconic.

That’s what this feature is about, Iconic Flows. All subjective and ya’ll will have your own opinions but we’re kicking this off by taking it back to the the end of the 2010’s with The London and Young Thug’s verse is definitely an Iconic Flow.

So check out Thug’s lyrics below and as far as we see it, we’re sure to see more of this now that the Atlanta legend is finally home.

Iconic Flows: Young Thug’s verse from The London

Pimp talk, church talk, I can make a brick walk (Woo)
Up north, down south, Bankhead to Rachel Walk (Ayy)
Hit it with a little water, stretch it like a vocal cord
STD, I run my ward, f*ck a fed and his daughter (Let’s go)
I’ma run the compound (Yeah)
I supply the cigarettes and bread (Woo)
I got a main and she gon’ ride (Uh)
She took a quarter and she fled (Uh)
I’m in the Lamb, so she gon’ ride (Yeah)
I see the pain in shawty’s light brown eyes (Ooh)
I’m at The London with some big thighs
No fries, she eat steaks with the fish sides
Did your mama tell you when something on fire
Stop, drop and roll? (Aw yeah)
I’ve been on the road like a pair of spinners at Stop-N-Go’s (Yeah)
I could charge ’em like a Dodge Hemi Demon
Got your broad in the garage eatin’ s*men
Every time a ni**a go back to the ward
Niggas act like they want start
And we leave them on the cement (Grra, grra!)

With the release of TMZ‘s ‘The Downfall Of Diddy: Inside The Freak Offs’, a woman who has identified herself has a guest at one of Diddy’s infamous “freak offs”, claims that there were minors present these supposedly adult-only parties.

Tanea Wallace, an aspiring singer-songwriter, alleges that she was flown from Los Angeles to Miami by a Saudi Prince in order to attend one of Diddy’s freak offs. Wallace can be seen on the most recent TMZ episode of the Diddy saga speaking in detail about people having sexual relations in groups who were visibly high on drugs and alcohol.

Wallace says that these sorts of adult activities were going on all night until the early hours of the next morning.

The most shocking subject in her claims was seeing “little people” dressed like Harajuku Barbies, but says that they were almost hidden by a wall of adults.

It is unclear as to whether or not Wallace will be testifying in the trial or if her claims will prompt new charges for the disgraced Bad Boy, but these allegations certainly give the federal authorities more leverage in their sex trafficking case.

Diddy’s federal trial is scheduled for May 2025. TheSource.com will provide more details about the trial as they develop.
