Diddy on Clarence Avant: ‘The Definition of a Free, Fearless Black Man’

Diddy on Clarence Avant: 'The Definition of a Free, Fearless Black Man'

Diddy salutes the late “Godfather of Black Music,” Clarence Avant on Instagram. Diddy reflected on Avant’s life by posting a picture of Avant, JAY-Z, and himself from a Roc Nation Brunch. Another was Diddy hugging the late legend.

Clarence Avant was the definition of a free, fearless Black man.

He never allowed any level of adversity or limitation stop him from paving his own path and advocating for Black creators to be valued and respected at the highest level.

He was a very successful record executive, entrepreneur and dealmaker. But more importantly, he was the most trusted and reliable relationship anyone could have.

There wasn’t a problem he couldn’t solve, an answer he couldn’t find, or a resource he wasn’t willing to share.

He kicked down doors, shattered stereotypes, and showed all of us aspiring leaders that nothing is more important than impact.

Clarance Avant was the definition of leading by example and lifting your people up with you.

He was never selfish with information. He wanted to see us all win and would stand with us in the fight.

He was more than someone I looked up to, he became one of my most beloved mentors and friends who taught me how to always show up.

Clarence Avant always answered the call.

We will forever honor his legacy, cherish the memories, and continue to remind the world of his story.

– Diddy

The world of music, entertainment, politics, and sports is collectively mourning the loss of an icon, as Clarence Alexander Avant, affectionately known as “The Black Godfather,” peacefully passed away at his Los Angeles residence on August 13, 2023, at the age of 92.

An official statement from Nicole Avant, Ted Sarandos, and Alex Avant reads: “It is with a heavy heart that the Avant/Sarandos family announce the passing of Clarence Alexander Avant.  Through his revolutionary business leadership, Clarence became affectionately known as “The Black Godfather” in the worlds of music, entertainment, politics, and sports. Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come.  The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.  Clarence passed away gently at home in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 13, 2023. He was 92.”

Born on February 25, 1931, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Avant’s remarkable journey traversed a landscape fraught with challenges and segregation. Rising through the ranks in the 1960s, he steered the careers of luminaries such as Little Willie John, jazz virtuosos Lalo Schifrin and Jimmy Smith and masterminded the historic sale of Stax Records in 1968.

Avant’s influence transcended music, extending into sports, film, and social progress. He played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectories of figures like Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Jackie Robinson, and Hank Aaron. His strategic prowess and negotiation skills led to groundbreaking deals that left an indelible mark on these realms.

In the 1980s, Avant’s creative vision flourished with the founding of Tabu Records, which contributed to the foundational fabric of hip-hop by producing releases that pioneering DJs sampled. His advisory role propelled the careers of super producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, leading to Janet Jackson’s iconic Control album.

Avant’s influence also reverberated in the political arena, where he sowed the seeds of early careers for Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter. His reach spanned across party lines, advising leaders on both sides of the aisle and showcasing his ability to unite diverse voices for common goals.

Throughout his storied career, Avant operated his music and publishing companies until 2018, when Universal Music Group acquired them. His legacy is etched in history, with honors including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Industry Icon Award at the Grammys, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Rest in peace, Clarence Avant.

bet plus logo

Paramount Global has called off the sale of BET Media Group. A potential sale is said, “wouldn’t result in any meaningful deleveraging of its balance sheet.”

According to Wall Street Journal, BET Media Group was purchased for $2.3 billion in 2000. The media group featured VH1, BET Studios, and the eventual BET + streaming service. Over the years, BET’s viewership has decreased, and Paramount was looking to offset those losses and additionally created by the Paramount+ streaming service.

In the sale, Paramount hoped to keep a minority stake and saw bids between $2 billion and $3 billion. Bidders ranged from Tyler Perry to Diddy. For now, the property will remain with Paramount.

Following the collaboration, Black reposted a video that was critical of Boosie’s behavior. Adding the story to his Instagram story, Black called Boosie a clown, writing, “Poosie a [clown emoji].”

Boosie had a swift response on Twitter, calling him “Kodak Thee Stallion.”

“SOLD U SOUL FA A MILLION!!” Boosie wrote. “I KNOW U A TAKE A DICK for 20 MILLION SMH U BEEN WEIRD!! U AINT NEVER BEEN NO STREET N-GGA U A CAPPER RAPPER LOL NICKELODEON ASS N-GGA LOL N-GGA SHOULDA STUCK THEY FINGER N YO ASSHOLE #KODAKTHESTALLION.”

Kodak Black’s new collaboration with 6ix9ine may rub some wrong, but he was compensated well. According to Wack 100, he orchestrated the new single, and Black was paid “a whole lot of money” and a special gift from Wack.

Wack 100 reveals Black arrived late at night, and the rapper had “fire in his eyes” and had a “man-to-man” conversation with 6ix9ine.

The new single is titled “Shaka Laka.” You can hear the single and Wack’s detail of the new single below.

The distaste for snitches runs through Boosie Badazz’s entire family. Boosie’s son, Tootie Raww, throws shots at Kodak Black for teaming with 6ix9ine on a new single.

Yo Gotti Says He is Only Dropping Short Projects Going Forward: ‘It’s More Like Art Pieces’

Yo Gotti Teams with DJ Drama to Release New Gangsta Grillz Tape 'I Showed U So'

Yo Gotti has a new mixtape out, I Showed U So, with DJ Drama. The release is a compact 11 tracks and comes in just under 30 minutes. Speaking with Ebro Darden at Apple Music 1, the CMG legend revealed why each release going forward will be shorter than most new rap releases.

“I think I said on ‘Driveway Furniture,’ ‘I’m putting nothing but mixtapes out from now on,’” Gotti said. “It’s not really a chart goal. It’s more like art pieces. I look at it like I want to put out short projects. This is the shortest project I ever put out. So, short projects is like art pieces and they’re purposeful. Each project will speak for that moment, whenever I put it out. And it ain’t no pressure, because like you said, I’m just doing what I want to do, how I want to do it. It’s like exercise.”

Last month, Yo Gotti dropped his latest Gangsta Grillz mixtape, I Showed U So, featuring collaborations with Moneybagg Yo and Rich Homie Quan. The 10-song mixtape with DJ Drama displays Gotti’s versatility, transitioning from gritty tracks like “Pop My Shit” to more romantic rhymes in “The One,” where he vulnerably raps about love and butterflies in his stomach.

The mixtape also reunites Gotti with Rich Homie Quan on their new collab, “Mandarin,” after their hit single “I Know” from Gotti’s acclaimed album “I Am” ten years ago.

I Showed U So is a long-awaited follow-up to Gotti’s breakthrough Gangsta Grillz project, I Told U So, released in 2006, which marked a turning point in his career. Now, 17 years later, Gotti celebrates the manifestation of his dreams and accomplishments.

The mixtape’s release follows Gotti’s “No Fake Love” single and video drop featuring Angela Simmons.

Additionally, I Showed U So marks Gotti‘s first solo release since his 11th studio album CM10: Free Game in February 2022, which achieved the highest-charting album of his career, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

Notably, Gotti recently joined First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at The White House to host a Major League Soccer Youth Clinic, showcasing his involvement as co-owner of DC United, a prestigious franchise in the MLS. He also participated in various festivities around the MLS All-Star Game in Washington D.C.

With a string of successful albums and an ever-growing fan base, Yo Gotti continues to make waves in the music industry and beyond.

EST Gee image.7

EST Gee wasn’t feeling the line of questions in an interview with Bootleg Kev, so he dipped out on the podcast. Hitting Instagram, EST Gee revealed he didn’t leave because of being asked about his football past, as Kev suggested, instead due to questions about aliens and pornstars.

“@bootlegkev You tryna play it like I walked out cause of football like ain’t did plenty interviews talking about playing and talk about it in my music,” EST Gee wrote on his Instagram story.

“You asking me if I remembered an old man pornstar,” EST Gee typed. “If I believe in aliens and the NFL combine????? WTF do that got to do with my album dropping Friday? And I literally just walked out that interview 2 hours ago you already got a clip up??? You tryna go viral LOL 100.”

EST Gee closed with, “I got real life shit going ask around ion feel like playing so please don’t play with me cause I play crazy.”

In response, Kev stated he is still a fan of EST and is looking forward to the album dropping. “I also can’t wait to talk about Brian Pumper, Aliens, and Football with future guests,” Kev wrote.

Kev also wrote on Twitter that EST Gee’s team stated the rapper did not only want to talk about typical items like music and also went into his punctuality. “He came 90 minutes late (which isn’t unique with some artists) and didn’t ever really seem to want to talk or be interviewed. I don’t care, I’m still a fan of his music and we got a moment out of it for the Internet. No hard feelings.”
