Terence Crawford Rejects Canelo Alvarez Fight Idea

Terence Crawford is currently the biggest name in boxing. The 40-0 fighter is coming off a dominant performance against Errol Spence Jr. in their undisputed welterweight unification fight. While a rematch with Spence Jr. will likely take place before the end of the year, many people have been speculating on what Crawford’s next fight could be. One name that has arisen is Cancelo Álvarez. Álvarez is 59-2-2 in his career and is currently the undisputed super middleweight champion.

However, it’s not a fight that Crawford himself is interested in. “No, not at all,” Crawford told TMZ in regards to his interest in the fight. “Canelo really don’t interest me because of the size factor.” Álvarez is a little under 20 lbs heavier than Crawford. Furthermore, Crawford referenced the fact that Álvarez has bounced around various weight classes over the years. “You don’t know what weight [Canelo’s] fighting at when he fighting,” Crawford explained. Crawford has expressed interest in fighting at 154 lbs. However, that’s an 8lb gain compared to a 19lb one.

Crawford Explains His Next Fights

However, Crawford did have some ideas for his next fights. First and foremost is the expected rematch for the welterweight title. “That’s my obligation in the contract and I gotta honor that if that’s the next move for me and my career,” Crawford said. The rematch clause is valid for 30 days after the fight and it is widely expected that Spence Jr. will trigger it later this month. Beyond Spence Jr. however, there was one opponent that Crawford liked the idea of fighting.

“I would definitely choose Jermell Charlo. It’s a meaningful fight,” Crawford said. “It’s more history. It’s more on the table.” As alluded to by Crawford, he has a long history with the 35-1 Charlo. Even at his unification victory over Spence Jr., Crawford found time to trade barbs with the Louisiana fighter. Much like his long feud with Spence Jr., fighting Charlo would settle a long war of words. Furthermore, Charlo is currently the undisputed light middleweight champion, which would make for a historic prize for the ever-hungry Crawford.

As such, they made sure to make it a full spectacle by bringing out stars for their ring walks, with Terence Crawford making his way to the ring flanked by Eminem as he walked out to “Lose Yourself.”

It is a bit odd that Eminem didn’t actually perform the song, as typically happens when an artist joins a boxer for his ring walk, but he introduced Crawford and strode to the ring by his side as his iconic song played. We got a glimpse at maybe why Em didn’t perform when Errol Spence Jr. came out with BigXthaPlug, who was just off with the lyrics compared to the song playing over the arena speakers.

It was quite the scene in T-Mobile Arena, as the fight had brought out some of the biggest stars in entertainment to watch ringside, ready to witness one of the biggest fights the sport’s had in the last decade.

Terence Crawford Dubs Errol Spence Fight “Biggest Of The Last 10+ Years”

Terence Crawford is set to fight Errol Spence Jr. on July 29. The unification fight will see two of the sport’s greatest active fighters duel for welterweight supremacy. Crawford is 39-0 and hasn’t had a fight go the distance since 2016. Furthermore, his last seven fights have been knockout wins. Meanwhile, Spence Jr. is 28-0 and has become much more of a distance fighter as of late. Three of Spence Jr.’s last four wins have been decisions. However, he comes off a tenth-round knockout of Yordenis Ugás in his most recent fight.

Still over a month away, the fight has gained monumental traction. It’s been dubbed a “legacy-defining” fight by several pundits. As to be expected with a fight of this magnitude, there is a bilateral rematch clause. Splitting the first two fights would obviously set up a rubber match to cap off the trilogy. Furthermore, the winner of the trilogy will have the leverage to push for a shot at Jernell Charlo, the undisputed junior middleweight champion.

Crawford Hypes Up Fight, Spence Jr. Promises Punishment

The fight is undeniably the biggest event in the sport since Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2017. However, Crawford thinks its even bigger than that. “It is the biggest fight of the year,” the 35-year-old said to TMZ. Furthermore, he added that it could be “the biggest fight in the last 10-plus years!.” Despite this, Crawford was confident of a win. “I’m going to win this fight,” he told TMZ. “And I’m already the best fighter in the world!”

For his part, Spence Jr. has also addressed the fight in recent days. “I’m trying to really put a hurting on him. So I feel like this is going to be an action-packed fight. I’m trying to put on the best performance of my career. “I know he gonna try to put on the best performance in his career, and everybody is going to want to tune into this fight, especially the older people who talk about, ‘Oh, man, I remember when this guy fought’ or when Ray Leonard fought and how great their fights was’,” Spence told Boxing News. The debate will finally be settled on July 29. Showtime has set a price of $84.99 for the pay-per-view event.

SOURCE SPORTS: Errol Spence Jr. Puts On a Clinic Against Yordenis Ugas, Eyes On Terence Crawford

Errol Spence Jr put on a boxing clinic in front of his hometown in Dallas at AT&T Stadium against Yordenis Ugas to add another belt to his collection. Spence fractured Ugas’ left orbital bone en route to a 9th-round stoppage victory.

Ugas was gamed all night and proved a great opponent for Spence in his first fight in two years.

“I didn’t have any doubts at all. I believed in myself 100% and trained 100%,” Spence said. “I didn’t want a tune-up fight or someone I knew I could beat. I wanted someone who would bring out the best in me and Ugas did that.

“The nutritionist helped a lot. I lost the weight and they did a great job. It was just my work in the gym. I felt like my timing was off [early in his return] but I just kept working. I think that was due to the long layoff and I was super psyched to get in the ring and push the pace.”

Spence added Ugas’ WBA welterweight title with the WBC and IBF titles he already owned with the victory. Spence only needs Terence Crawford’s WBO title to become the undisputed 147-pound champion.

“Everybody knows who I want next; I want Terence Crawford next,” said Spence. “That’s the fight that I want; that’s the fight everybody else wants. Terence, I’m coming for that motherf—ing belt.”

For years, the culture and boxing world have begged for this fight. Shorty after Spence’s victory, Crawford expressed his level of interest in making that fight happen.

Hopefully, at some point in 2022, we can finally get the fight we all want.
