Mass Shooting Leaves 10 Wounded In Denver After Nuggets’ Finals Win

A mass shooting in Denver, Colorado has left at least 10 people wounded. It occurred in an area of the city where fans had been celebrating the Nuggets’ first NBA title win, early Tuesday morning. Police have taken a suspect into custody. He was among the 10 people wounded.

The shooting occurred around 12:30 AM, local time, roughly one mile from Ball Arena, where the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat a few hours earlier. Three of those who were wounded are in critical condition with the rest believed to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Scene In Denver After The Nuggets’ Win

“As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that’s still under investigation at this time,” police spokesperson Doug Schepman said. “It did occur in the area where we had the largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night.” Schepman added that the celebrating crowd in the area had “diminished quite a bit at that point.” The shooting occurred in an area of the city where people were likely leaving various bars and restaurants. “We had a lot of officers in that immediate area of 20th and Market when the shooting occurred, which is why the response to it was so quick,” he said.

Chief Ron Thomas provided an update on the situation in a press conference later in the day. He explained that the shooting was likely sparked by a drug deal gone wrong. Thomas added that there are two suspects and roughly 20 rounds of ammunition were fired at the scene. Further details are unavailable, but Schepman described the ongoing investigation as “expansive.” Be on the lookout for more information in the coming days.

A co-sign from Drake raises the profile of any rising musician. On the other hand, sports fans tremble when the “Search & Rescue” rapper pours his support behind their favorite teams. However, Drake’s NBA Finals bet win netted the rapper nearly a million dollars as the Denver Nuggets sidestepped the “Drake Curse.”

Yesterday, the team pulled out the Game 5 victory over the Miami Heat with the final score of 94 to 89. The musician took to Instagram to share his bets on the game. He shared two that he placed, both on June 1.

The first bet was that the series would be wrapped up in five games, with the Nuggets winning four games to Miami’s one. That bet cost $250K and would net a total return of $850K. Secondly, he bet $1 million on the Nuggets to win outright. The payout for this bet brought in $1.23 million. So, overall, Drake walked away $830K richer.

The championship is the first ever for the Nuggets, which started as an ABA team back in 1967. So, the win was a huge moment for Denver, but it seemed like star center Nikola Jokic was pretty quickly ready to move on: When he was informed that the team’s championship parade was still a few days away, he seemed genuinely bummed, saying, “No, I have to go home.”

They were the best team in the Western Conference, and in the playoffs, they continued to be great. Heading into the Finals, they had only lost three times. Moreover, they lost once to the Miami Heat en route to a five-game gentleman’s sweep. Jokic was absolutely legendary during the series, and his heroics down the stretch propelled the Nuggets to their win.

However, if you paid attention to the celebration after the game, it became clear that Nikola Jokic didn’t care all that much. For the city of Denver, this is just an incredible time. The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup last year, and now, they have an NBA champion. Denver Nuggets Win 2023 NBA Finals, Their First In Franchise History

This year’s NBA Finals, as chaotic as they surely were for many fans, brought the league a lot of standout moments and great displays of basketball. Of the entire season, though, few will stack up to a 47-year franchise reaching (and winning) their first title in history. The Denver Nuggets, composed of Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and many other great players, just beat the Miami Heat in the fifth game of their series in their home of Colorado. Undeniably, it was quite the nail-biting affair as both teams fought hard in what ended up being just a five-point difference. It’s always bittersweet to see the season come to a close, but it’s also amazing to see such milestones for such hard-working teams.

Of course, the series wouldn’t have been complete without the amazing skills of The Joker. Jokić won the Bill Russell Finals Most Valuable Player trophy. It’s also the first award that was given to a Finals MVP after Russell’s passing, and as league commissioner Adam Silver said, it’s fitting that it was to a center. In addition, plenty of flowers showered upon Jamal Murray, who just two years prior was barely able to walk.

Denver Nuggets Earns Its First NBA Title In History

On the other hand, the Miami Heat proved as the 2023 Eastern Champions that they wouldn’t go down without a fight. Jimmy Butler nabbed some incredible clutch threes throughout the game and it was overall a hard-fought battle. Both teams showed each other a lot of respect throughout the series, as misleading as the final 4-1 series may seem. Considering that they were an eighth seed in the post-season, their run all the way to the Finals was truly remarkable as well. Most importantly for fans, it was an overall great display of the game, and certainly an emotive moment for the Denver Nuggets.

Now that they nabbed their first Finals trophy in franchise history, it will be interesting to see how the next season plays out. Amid rumors that LeBron James is considering retirement and other massive shifts in the association, the guesses and predictions will flood in quick. “My biggest concern going into any close-out game is human nature and fighting against that,” Malone said to ESPN. “Most teams, when you’re up 3-1, they come up for air. They relax and they just kind of take it for granted that, oh, we’re going to win this.

“We know anything is possible [down 3-1]. That’s why my message to our team was our approach has to be we are down 3-1. They are desperate. We have to be more desperate. They are hungry. We have to be hungrier.”

The Nuggets won Game 4 on Friday 108-95. Game 5 is back in Denver at Ball Arena.

Denver Nuggets Take Finals Lead Behind Historic Performances

The NBA Finals have already produced plenty of excitement. The Nuggets dominated Game 1 at home. Nikola Jokić led a dominant blowout with yet another triple-double. However, despite Jokić dropping 41 points, the Heat were able to steal a tight Game 2. Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Gabe Vincent were able to help the Heat outlast the Western Conference giants. This led to a hilarious moment where Butler mooned Adebayo at the post-game press conference.

As the series moved to Miami, there were a lot of variables in the air. Many pundits believed that the Heat had finally figured out how to defend Jokić. Furthermore, there was speculation that the Heat simply had the deeper starting roster, with the Nuggets heavily relying on Jokić and Jamal Murray. However, it would all be settled on the court, with the series lead up for grabs. After stealing a game on the road, it was the perfect opportunity for the Heat to take control of the series.

Jokić And Murray Headline Historic Night

Miami took a slim, early lead in the first quarter before the Nuggets battled back to end the first quarter tied at 24. However, Denver began to pull away in the second quarter and entered the half up five, 53-48. Jokić already had a double-double at the half, with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Nuggets pushed their momentum in the third quarter, extending their lead to 14 entering the final period. The Heat never found a way back into the game and Denver retook the lead in the Finals with a 109-94 victory.

Murray led all scorers with 34 points, adding 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Alongside him was Jokić, who put a 32-point triple-double with 21 rebounds and 10 assists. It made them the first players in NBA history to record 30-point triple-doubles in the same game. Furthermore, they became the first teammates to each record 30 points and 10 assists in the same game since Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter in 1992. Elsewhere, Jokić was making individual history by recording the first 30-20-10 game in NBA Finals history. Furthermore, it’s just the third 30-20-10 game in playoff history after Kareem and Wilt. Miami HEAT Bounce Back to Steal Win and Home Court in Game 2

You can never count out the Miami HEAT. Jimmy Butler and the HEAT got out to a fast start, dropped behind by as much as 15, only to regain the lead and hold on for a 111-108 finish in Game 2 of their NBA Finals series with the Denver Nuggets.

With the win, the HEAT stole home court and became the No. 8 seed with the most wins in a single playoff run in NBA History. Butler finished with 21 points and nine assists, echoing sentiments that he has had all playoffs long, which are keys to the team’s success.

“We’re not worried about what anybody thinks,” Butler said. “We’re so focused in on what we do well and who we are as a group that at the end of the day, that’s what we fall back on. Make or miss shots, we’re going to be who we are because we’re not worried about anybody else. That’s how it’s been all year long, and that’s not going to change. So that’s what I think it is. I think it’s the ‘I don’t give a damn’ factor.”

The HEAT caught an early spark from Max Struss, who bounced back after a 0-for-10 performance to hit four threes in the first quarter. Center Bam Adebayo contributed elite defense and strong cuts to the basket, Kevin Love helped counter the size of Aaron Gordon, but the sniper of the night was Gabe Vincent, who scored 23 points, including huge threes. Also was Duncan Robinson, who exploded for ten crucial points in the fourth quarter.

For Denver, Nikola Jokic dropped 41 points and 10 rebounds; however, only four assists were limited in distribution to his supporting cast. Jamal Murray had 18 points, but the rest of the starting lineup, Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter Jr., and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, didn’t combine for 25.

In post-game, Nuggets head coach Mike Malone blasted the team’s effort, dubbing it unworthy of the NBA Finals.

“This is the NBA Finals,” Malone said. “We are talking about effort. That’s a huge concern of mine. You guys probably thought I was just making up some storyline after Game 1 when I said we didn’t play well. We didn’t play well.

“Tonight, the starting lineup to start the game, it was 10-2 Miami. Start of the third quarter, they scored 11 points in two minutes. We had guys out there that were just, whether feeling sorry for themselves for not making shots or thinking they can just turn it on or off. This is not the preseason, this is not the regular season. This is the NBA Finals. That, to me, is really, really perplexing, disappointing.”

The series will now shift to Miami for Wednesday’s Game 3.
