Clarence Avant, “Black Godfather” Of Music Industry, Dies At 92

Clarence Avant, a music industry titan and tastemaker, has tragically passed away at 92 years old. His success as a music industry insider earned him the title of the “Black Godfather.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avant passed away at his Los Angeles home on Sunday (August 13). Following the news, his family released a statement.

“Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of friends and associates that have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come,” the Avant/Sarandos family said in a statement to THR. “The joy of his legacy eases the sorrow of our loss.” The shocking news comes only 20 months after his wife, philanthropist Jacqueline Avant, was shot and killed at their Beverly Hills home in December 2021. He is survived by his daughter Nicole Avant, and son, Alexander.

Avant Was Recently The Subject Of A Netflix Documentary

Netflix’s The Black Godfather explores Avant’s decades-long career as a record executive, a manager, a promoter, and more. Avant was a key figure in the development of the modern music industry. Additionally, his accomplishments include discovering Bill Withers, managing Sarah Vaughn, and working secretly with LA Reid, Jay-Z, Quincy Jones, etc. He was also the promoter of Michael Jackson’s Bad tour and was Motown’s chairman for four years in the ’90s.

Besides that, Avant received the Ahmet Ertegun Award and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. Lionel Richie, who delivered the induction speech, said: “There’s no way possible you can talk about Clarence Avant in four minutes…He’s a teacher. He’s a master communicator. He’s the perfect marriage between street sense and common sense. And what he did for us, and what I mean by us is the sons and daughters of the Afro-American community, he was the one that brought us to some understanding of what the music business was all about.” However, his influence extends far beyond music. Former President Barack Obama credited Avant with helping him land his appearance at the 2004 Democratic convention. As a result, it booted him politically for his successful run in 2008.

High School Basketball Prospect Caleb White Dies After Sudden Collapse

Caleb White, a highly-regarded basketball prospect from Alabama, has died after collapsing during a workout at Pinson Valley High School. White was ESPN‘s #43 point guard in the Class of 2024 but fell outside the network’s Top 100 players in the class as a whole. He was also listed as the #3 prospect in the state of Alabama. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the 17-year-old’s cause of death.

“He was a phenomenal player,” Richele Crawford, a fellow Pinson Valley senior, told WMBA. “It was mesmerizing to watch him. He was fun to watch all the time. He was one of the kids more on the goofy side. I’ll forever remember him on and off the court smiling.” White’s childhood friend Arnold Thomas also lamented the loss. “Today was just heartbreaking. I can’t even put words together for it. He was a great kid,” he told WMBA.

Caleb White’s Death Linked To Bronny James

Other schools in the area also shared their condolences. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Caleb White, his family, and the @PinsonValley Community,” nearby Mountain Brook High School wrote on social media. “Phenomenal player but more importantly a great person that’s gone [too] soon.” Of course, many have pointed to the similarities between this case and the non-fatal cardiac arrest suffered by Bronny James last month. James continues to recover in private after collapsing at a USC training session in Los Angeles. Despite reportedly recovering well, James did recently pay a visit to the Mayo Clinic for further testing. James is the second USC player in the last two years to suffer a cardiac arrest.

However, many people online have decided to utilize this tragic event for their own personal gain. A number of anti-vax accounts have posted about White’s death, claiming without evidence that it is a result of the COVID-19 vaccine. It’s a disgusting and predatory response to the tragic death of a 17-year-old. At this time, no information about White death’s has been available, with an autopsy scheduled in order to try and provide some clues to what caused this terrible occurrence.

Legendary Cal Receiver Sean Dawkins Dead At 52

Wide receiver Sean Dawkins, a legendary figure at Cal and 9-year veteran of the NFL, has passed away at the age of 52. Dawkins began his football career with the Cal Golden Bears in 1990. While he saw limited action in his freshman year, Dawkins was part of a Cal team that won its first Bowl Game since 1938. The following season, Dawkins got more looks and helped Cal reach #7 in the CNN/USA Today Coaches Poll, the school’s highest mark since 1950. While the Golden Bears regressed in his junior year, going 4-7, Dawkins shone individually. He had 1070 yards and 14 touchdowns. Declaring for the NFL Draft after the season, Dawkins left Cal as the career and single-season leader in receiving touchdowns, records that still stand to this day.

Drafted 16th overall by the Colts in 1993, Dawkins settled into a utility role with the team. He would leave the Colts after the 1997 season, joining the Saints for a year before heading to Seattle. After two seasons in the PNW, Dawkins joined the Jaguars in 2001. He left the NFL behind after a training camp cut with the Vikings in 2002. After pro football, Dawkins pursued a career in real estate before later training to become a police officer. He was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame in 2005.

Sports World Mourns Sean Dawkins

A number of notable figures publicly mourned Dawkins’ passing on social media. “Rest in peace, Sean Dawkins. I am shocked and saddened,” wrote Colts owner Jim Irsay. Meanwhile, Cal alum Jason Kidd also shared his grief. “Heartbroken over the tragic loss of Sean Dawkins, a true legend of the @Cal Bear community. His remarkable talent brought joy to fans and inspired many. Our deepest condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Sean. 🙏 #ForeverACalBear #RIPSeanDawkins.” Kidd, now the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, was a freshman during Dawkins’ junior year.

Dawkins is a forgotten gem of the 1990s. Playing 140 games, he totaled 6291 yards and 25 touchdowns. He helped the Colts reach an AFC Championship game and by all accounts, was a great teammate. But perhaps he will be missed most by the Cal Bear community in Berkeley. He helped the Bears shake the label of a national laughing stock and became a shining light when their time atop the podium quickly went away. Rest in peace, Sean.

Lil Tay Revealed To Be Alive, Claims Instagram Was Hacked

Tay “Lil Tay” Tian is reportedly alive and well, according to a statement from her family given to TMZ. The 14-year-old was a viral sensation back in 2018. She became famous for posting videos “flexing” her wealth and status. However, amid a nasty custody battle between her mother Angela Tian and her father Christopher Hope, Lil Tay’s social media accounts fell silence. Many people claimed at the time that her parents had exploited their daughter for internet fame. The cessation of Lil Tay content concided with interviews in which Tian claimed she was being abused. Furthermore, there was backlash to videos in which Tian, who was 9 at the time, used the n-word.

However, it came as a shock to many as Tian’s Instagram page posted for the first time since 2018 on August 9. The posted announced the news that Tian and her brother Jason had died unexpectedly. The news was met with equal parts grief and skepticism. Tian’s father seemingly refused to confirm her death when contact by the media. Meanwhile, law enforcement in both LA and Vancouver stated that they had not received any notification of deaths matching Tian and her brother. Well, it appears we know why given Tian and her brother are seemingly not dead.

Lil Tay Gives Statement

“I want to make it clear that my brother and I are safe and alive, but I’m completely heartbroken, and struggling to even find the right words to say. It’s been a very traumatizing 24 hours. All day yesterday, I was bombarded with endless heartbreaking and tearful phone calls from loved ones all while trying to sort out this mess,” Tian said in a statement to TMZ. “My Instagram account was compromised by a 3rd party and used to spread jarring misinformation and rumors regarding me, to the point that even my name was wrong. My legal name is Tay Tian, not “Claire Hope”.”

However, the announcement has left questions for some people. Firstly, if this was an Instagram hack, why did her father not simply deny the rumors? Secondly, some have pointed to the “hacking” excuse as a pretty common deflection when someone messes up on social media. But, at the time of writing, all we know is what TMZ has been told. Tian’s family is claiming it was a malicious Instagram and nothing more. This remains a developing story and we’ll have any updates here at HotNewHipHop.

Lil Tay’s “Death” Sparks Suspicion

The internet was shocked by the sudden news that Claire “Lil Tay” Hope had suddenly passed away on August 9. Hope gained infamy in the late 2010s for her boisterous internet persona. Her videos often showed her wads of cash and posting up in luxury apartments. While she called herself the “internet’s hardest flexer”, many YouTube detectives argued that it was just an act. These commentators argued that Hope was likely being directed by her parents. Furthermore, evidence emerged that Hope was likely filming at properties managed by her mother Angela Tian, a realtor.

However, Hope’s star quickly faded into tragedy. First, videos containing then then-nine-year-old Hope using racial slurs emerged. Then, several interviews with outlets such as The Daily Beast saw Hope claim parental abuse and a forced move to Vancouver to be with her father after he reportedly threatened to have her mother arrested. Hope’s social media pages were inactive from 2018 until the sudden announcement of her death this week. Despite all this, people are starting to question the sudden obituary.

Is Lil Tay Dead?

Speculation has begun to emerge that Hope may not be dead and that her parents have faked her death in an attempt to bring new attention to the Lil Tay brand. This comes after her father, Christopher, seemingly refused to confirm her death. “Yeah, you have the right person, but I don’t have any comment right now. I’m not able to give you any comment right now. I’m sorry — I can’t,” Hope told the New York Post in a brief phone call. A similar statement was made by Henry Tsang, the alleged ex-manager of Lil Tay. “I have been in communication with individuals who have an intimate understanding of the family’s situation. Given the complexities of the current circumstances, I am at a point where I cannot definitively confirm or dismiss the legitimacy of the statement issued by the family,” Tsang told the US Sun.

Additionally, it’s unclear where Hope was at the time of her alleged death. A spokesperson for the Vancouver PD told The Post that they had not received any reports of deaths matching Hope or her brother, Jason Tian. Tian was also reported to have died alongside Hope. Furthermore, The Post was unable to contact Hope’s mother Angela, or the LAPD. This is a developing story and we’ll have any updates here at HotNewHipHop.

Woman Allegedly Tied To 350Heem’s Murder Says She Isn’t A Felon

Last weekend, Florida rapper 350Heem was murdered. According to reports, the 25-year-old was hosting an album release party for his new LP, Taking Chances 3. Things took a turn for the worst, however, as he was later shot and killed outside of the Jade Fox Wine Bar & Lounge in Lakeland, Florida. Another individual, a 48-year-old woman, was also injured in the shooting.

A woman was arrested in connection to 350Heem’s murder at the scene of the tragedy. A gun was also recovered, which had been reported as stolen in 2015. The 23-year-old, Jamilah Johnson, was then charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, which her defense says is inaccurate. “She’s not a convicted felon,” her lawyer Jeff Holmes stated. He also pointed out that despite not being a felon, she does have a criminal record.

Johnson was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in 2022. After pleading no contest, court documents suggest that the charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor. Her lawyer continued, “Since she wasn’t a convicted felon and the only charge they originally arrested her for was possession by a convicted felon, she never should have been arrested.” 350Heem was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. The other injured individual was left with “critical injuries.”

“It’s a grief I’ve never felt before,” the rapper’s aunt told 10 Tampa Bay while confirming his passing. “You never want to bury your 25-year-old nephew.” Kennie Crawford, 350Heem’s mother, also shared a statement on her son’s death. “I am in disbelief,” she expressed, “My heart is broken. I can’t even gather my words right at this moment.” 350Heem was also the younger brother of former NBA player Dwayne Bacon. Bacon shared a message to his late sibling on Instagram earlier this week. “We were the first two kids momma had,” he explained, “and we made it out. You and I, we made it out. Crazy, I always believed in you no matter what you did.”

Dominic Fike Reflects On Passing Of “Euphoria” Co-Star Angus Cloud

Dominic Fike reflected on the loss of his Euphoria co-star, Angus Cloud, during a concert in Houston on Tuesday night. In doing so, he recalled how he found out about the 25-year-old’s tragic passing while on his way to a massage.

“I guess I lost a friend of mine recently,” Fike said on stage while strumming his guitar. “He died the other night, which is wild to say because I don’t deal with grief often. I haven’t had a lot of death happen around me, and this was the first time I feel like I knew the person well enough to cry over and feel something. It was weird.”

(Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for HBO)

Fike continued: “I was on my way to get a massage, which sounds so fucking stupid, at the time, and I got this call. And it fucked me up, obviously. I still got the massage. I felt really stupid. He probably would’ve been like, ‘Yeah, go ahead,’ you know? Even this tonight, I was sitting in the green room, and it felt… You know when things just feel trivial? You feel really small, and the timeline gets sort of stretched out.”

“I sometimes look at people like sparks,” Fike went on. “I zoom out, and I think people have wavelengths. If you zoom out far enough, you see some people — probably not a lot of us at all — but I think if you zoomed out millions of miles, you would see this kid’s spark. You could see it from so far away, even if it was a short flash. He would light up a room, any room he walked in. He’s a fucking good dude. I felt stupid coming out here. Like, this is so stupid, doing a show and being happy. But he would’ve wanted me to do that. He would’ve been like, ‘No, do the show, have fun.’”

Dominic Fike Discusses Angus Cloud

Cloud’s family announced his passing in a statement on Monday. They explained that he was “intensely struggling” with the loss of his father, who he buried a week prior. Fike isn’t the only Euphoria actor to speak out on the loss of Cloud. The star of the HBO series, Zendaya, also penned a heartfelt message for the 25-year-old.
