Kalen DeBoer To Succeed Nick Saban At Alabama

Washington Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer will succeed Nick Saban at Alabama, sources have told ESPN. The news is the first major link to a new coach in Tuscaloosa after Saban’s sudden retirement earlier this week. Previously, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning announced this intention to remain at his current school. Washington is reportedly aggressively fighting to keep DeBoer, who guided the team to the National Championship Game this season and has lost just three games over the past two seasons.

The 49-year-old DeBoer turned Washington from an ailing Pac-12 cast-off into the conference’s best team. His first head coaching tenure was spent at his alma mater, Sioux Falls and won three NAIA championships. After subsequently spending a decade in offensive coordinating roles, DeBoer received his first D1 head coaching role at Fresno State. DeBoer led the Bulldogs to their first bowl game in three years before leaving for Washington ahead of the 2022 season.

Nick Saban Retires, Leaving Big Shoes for Kalen DeBoer

However, if DeBoer is hired, he would be stepping into both the most coveted and difficult coaching job in college football. Saban led Alabama to six national titles and finished with a record of 201-29 at the school. After falling to Michigan in the CFP Semifinals, the expectation is for Alabama to ride the momentum of Jalen Milroe’s emergence and challenge for a title in 2024.

Furthermore, the new coach, who is now expected to be DeBoer, will have to contend with an NIL machine that Saban held disdain for. Despite this, Saban has denied speculation that his retirement was due to the evolving world of compensation for college athletes. “Don’t make it about that. It’s not about that. To me, if you choose to coach, you don’t need to be complaining about all that stuff. You need to adjust to it and adapt to it and do the best you can under the circumstances and not complain about it,” Saban told ESPN. While Saban had previously expressed doubts about NIL, namely that it could create a “pay to play” system. However, he also acknowledged that it was the future of college athletes.

Nick Saban Says Retirement Had Nothing To Do With NIL

Nick Saban has denied speculation that his retirement was due to the evolving world of compensation for college athletes. “Don’t make it about that. It’s not about that. To me, if you choose to coach, you don’t need to be complaining about all that stuff. You need to adjust to it and adapt to it and do the best you can under the circumstances and not complain about it,” Saban told ESPN. While Saban had previously expressed doubts about NIL, namely that is could create a “pay to play” system, he also acknowledged that it was the future of college athletes.

However, that didn’t stop people pointing the finger of blame at the system for Saban’s departure. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, a vocal opponent of NIL, openly suggested that Saban had retired due to NIL rules in a tweet reacting to the news. As for Saban’s replacement, frontrunner Dan Lanning also already announced that he intends to stay and see out his contract with Oregon.

Nick Saban Retires

First reported by ESPN, Saban announced his retirement on January 10. Saban hung up his headset after 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide. Saban led Alabama to six national titles and finished the 2023 season with a Rose Bowl loss to eventual champions Michigan. Saban’s coaching journey began all the way back in 1973 as a graduate assistant at Kent State. His first head coaching role was at Toledo in 1990. He would hold the same position at Michigan State, LSU, and the Miami Dolphins before coming to Alabama in 2007. He immediately turned around an ailing program, turning them into them into the powerhouse they are today.

Saban, who turned 72 last October, has previously been coy about retirement. I’ve always said that if you’re thinking about retirement, you’re probably already retired, and I’m not there yet,” Saban told ESPN in November. Saban, who is yet to confirm his retirement, ends his career with a record of 292-71-1 in 28 total seasons as a college head coach. He has seven National championships, 12 conference titles, and 19 bowl game victories. Alabama are expected to remain a title contender in 2024.

Brandon Miller Subject Of Wrongful Death Suit Over Alabama Shooting Death

Hornets rookie Brandon Miller has been named in a wrongful death suit filed by the family of a woman killed in Tuscaloosa earlier this year. The family of Jonae Harris named Miller along with Darius Miles and Michael Davis. The latter two are facing capital murder charges for Harris’ death. Miller was not criminally charged, though was accused of bringing Miles’ gun to him when asked before the shooting.

That allegation against Miller is the reason behind his inclusion in the lawsuit. Miles, Davis and Miller “knew or should have known that bringing a dangerous weapon to a dispute and discharging said weapon would likely result in harm,” the lawsuit alleges. Additionally, the complaint states that “as a direct or proximate consequence of the negligence or wantonness of each of the defendants,” Harris suffered fatal injuries. Harris’ family is seeking testimony from all three men.

Stephen A. Smith Defends ESPN Colleague Asking About Brandon Miller At Draft

Elsewhere, Stephen A. Smith spoke out about the Brandon Miller case in his own way earlier this year. Smith defended his ESPN colleague Malika Andrews after she faced criticism for asking whether Miller’s involvement in the case could affect his draft position. “She’s getting crucified during the Draft because… Brandon Miller…bringing up somebody’s past. She had an obligation to ask those questions. She did her job. If she doesn’t do her job, she’s off the air.” Stephen A. Smith said in an August podcast appearance.

The incident highlighted how fickle sports fans can be. People on social media called Andrews a bitch and a roach and said that she was ruining “Miller’s special night”. However, she was literally doing her job. “How does this factor in, if at all, into how teams are evaluating him?” is a great way to ask this question. Why? Because it includes a clause to allow someone to literally respond, “I think there will be minimal impact on his evaluation.” Furthermore, Miller still went #2 overall in the draft. Clearly, this was a non-issue for teams. It just seems that people are mad that Andrews dared to ask the tough questions.

Deion Sanders Praised By Nick Saban After 3-0 Start

Alabama coach Nick Saban has become the latest figure to offer up praise to Deion Sanders. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Deion Sanders. First, he’s a great person and he’s done a great job of marketing the program to create a lot of national interest. But I see their team playing well on the field. They play with discipline, they do a good job of executing, they’ve been able to score points, playing decent on defense. So all those things, to me, are indicators that he’s a really good coach,” Saban told reporters on Wednesday.

Furthermore, Saban noted that this was an opinion he had held prior to Sanders’ arrival in Colorado. “He’s always been successful whether it was Jackson State, high school or now in Colorado. His teams have always been well coached.” Sanders began his coaching journey at his Prime Prep Academy in Texas in 2012. He also coached at Triple A Academy and Trinity Christian Community College before landing the Jackson State job in 2020. He went 27-6 with the SWAC powerhouse.

However, the praise is by no means one-sided. Sanders praised Saban during a recent 60 Minutes interview. “I love and I adore and I respect and every time I do a commercial with Coach Saban — it’s a gift. Just sitting in his presence and hearing him and throwing something else out there so I can hear his viewpoint on it, because he’s forgotten more things than I may ever accomplish. So I’m a student looking up to this wonderful teacher saying, ‘Just throw me a crumb of what you know.’”

Both coaches are faced with ranked matchups this weekend. For Sanders, his #19 Colorado squad are 21-point underdogs at #10 Oregon to open Pac-12 play. Meanwhile, Saban has the #13 Crimson Tide up against #15 Ole Miss. For the first time since September 2015, Alabama is not ranked inside the top 10. The drop from #10 to #13 came after the Tide struggled against unranked UCF.

High School Basketball Prospect Caleb White Dies After Sudden Collapse

Caleb White, a highly-regarded basketball prospect from Alabama, has died after collapsing during a workout at Pinson Valley High School. White was ESPN‘s #43 point guard in the Class of 2024 but fell outside the network’s Top 100 players in the class as a whole. He was also listed as the #3 prospect in the state of Alabama. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the 17-year-old’s cause of death.

“He was a phenomenal player,” Richele Crawford, a fellow Pinson Valley senior, told WMBA. “It was mesmerizing to watch him. He was fun to watch all the time. He was one of the kids more on the goofy side. I’ll forever remember him on and off the court smiling.” White’s childhood friend Arnold Thomas also lamented the loss. “Today was just heartbreaking. I can’t even put words together for it. He was a great kid,” he told WMBA.

Caleb White’s Death Linked To Bronny James

Other schools in the area also shared their condolences. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Caleb White, his family, and the @PinsonValley Community,” nearby Mountain Brook High School wrote on social media. “Phenomenal player but more importantly a great person that’s gone [too] soon.” Of course, many have pointed to the similarities between this case and the non-fatal cardiac arrest suffered by Bronny James last month. James continues to recover in private after collapsing at a USC training session in Los Angeles. Despite reportedly recovering well, James did recently pay a visit to the Mayo Clinic for further testing. James is the second USC player in the last two years to suffer a cardiac arrest.

However, many people online have decided to utilize this tragic event for their own personal gain. A number of anti-vax accounts have posted about White’s death, claiming without evidence that it is a result of the COVID-19 vaccine. It’s a disgusting and predatory response to the tragic death of a 17-year-old. At this time, no information about White death’s has been available, with an autopsy scheduled in order to try and provide some clues to what caused this terrible occurrence.

[WATCH] Footage Of The Alabama Riverfront Dock Brawl Goes Viral

Screen Shot 2023 08 07 at 11.00.30 PM

Over the weekend, a battle royale went down in Montgomery, Alabama at the city’s Riverfront Park, where a Black dock worker was jumped by a group of white passengers of a boat he asked to move. Things quickly escalated into today’s viral sensation after a group of Black men swarmed and even swam to the area to come to the aid of the dock worker. The footage from the massive fight has since went viral, with several spoof reenactments to match.

The meleé was no laughing matter, with Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed releasing a statement online, saying, “Last night, the Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job. Warrants have been signed and justice will be served. This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred. As our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we should not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community. Those who choose violence will be held accountable by our criminal justice system.”

Plies Excitedly Reacts To Montgomery, Alabama Brawl

If you’ve been online at all today, you probably know that there was a viral and nasty brawl that went down in Montgomery, Alabama. Moreover, the clip spread like wildfire online around Sunday (August 6), and involves multiple people feuding over an alleged dispute where a boat was blocking another on the riverfront. Many commented on this in a light fashion, making jokes about it or criticizing the fight itself. However, considering that there was one black man getting beat up by a group of white men, there’s a much more heinous undertone than some people believe. Unfortunately, any nuanced conversation around it got muddled up by ignorance of its implications.

Furthermore, Plies became the latest rap-adjacent figure to react to the fight, and did so quite lightly. Of course, he’s known for his social media antics, so this shouldn’t come as much surprise. That being said, he remarked that he would’ve liked to have been there amid the beatdown. That will surely come off tone-deaf for many. In an Instagram clip, the Florida native giggled and yelled while throwing punches in the air.

While Plies did excitedly say something in this clip, his caption basically sums them up. “B***h I Wish I Was In Alabama Tonight Bih!!!!” the 47-year-old wrote with laughing emojis. “They Gave It To Y’all Azz Tonight!!!! (As Long As They Ain’t Whip No Kids Or Women). But All Y’all Tripled Teamed My Boy On The Dock Y’all Azz Get It Bih!!!” Sure, his social media is quite volatile and sometimes for good reason, but this took the opposite direction.

Meanwhile, Montgomery police said they issued four active warrants related to this brawl. They also apprehended multiple individuals with pending charges, with possible additional action after investigators review footage. “Last night, the Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job,” the city’s mayor Steven Reed stated on Sunday afternoon. “Warrants are being signed and justice will be served. [WATCH] Rapper CashFlow Harlem Sums Up The Alabama Riverfront Brawl With A Tearjerker

Screen Shot 2023 08 07 at 8.17.15 AM

Social media has been in shambles this weekend after videos of a brawl in Alabama show several men came to the defense of a dock worker getting jumped by thugs. Rapper CashFlow Harlem released a freestyle summing up the events and it’s a tear jerker.

Several people were taken into custody Saturday at Montgomery’s Riverfront Park and the media is spinning the situation as a racially divided war but video shows it was about principle.

It’s been reported that the fight began because a pontoon boat was blocking dock space needed to park a riverboat. That area is the regular spot reserved for the Harriott II Riverboat.
During the video, one witness, apparently watching from the riverboat, screamed repeatedly, “Y’all help that brother!” to onlookers who were on shore. It appears some people from the shore did join in to defend him, and the video shows at least one Black man dive into the water from the riverboat. While the black community cheered because of the unity we must also never forget those who were savagely taken away from us.
