The 12 Best Kendrick Lamar Music Videos, Ranked

Kendrick Lamar best music video still with 'Element,' 'Not Like Us' & 'Humble' stills
YouTube/Merle Cooper

Kendrick Lamar’s new song “Not Like Us” has upended the hip-hop landscape, and such a seismic single warrants an equally world-shaking music video. That’s what K. Dot provided with the supporting visual for “Not Like Us,” a four-minute celebration of not just his victory over one of the biggest stars on the planet, but also of his city, Compton, and LA culture in general.

Those elements often appear in Kendrick’s videography, which spans far longer than the obvious decade or so since he became a Grammy-winning, Fox News-terrifying, esoteric yet somehow ubiquitous fixture of pop culture. The following list was debated, discussed, and even outright dissed by my colleague Wongo and I (with our long-suffering editor, Phil, playing referee) until we got to his best — both in their visual representation of K Dot’s messaging and for their dynamic and memorable imagery.

Disclaimer: We left “The Heart Part 5” off this list over its use of deepfake AI — contrived and problematic technology on its own — that we believe aged poorly in hindsight.

12. “Michael Jordan”

The song that put Kendrick Lamar on the map in the city of LA. If the unofficial through-line of this list is how deeply Kendrick connects to his city through his visuals, this is where that line begins. It may not be as visually striking as other clips on this list, but it is likely one of the most thematically impactful — look no further than the fact that the then-relatively unknown Kendrick, considered something of a sidekick at the time to TDE’s “real” star, Jay Rock, shut down the 110 Freeway in Downtown Los Angeles to shoot much of this video. For non-Angelenos, this is vaguely akin to choking off the superior vena cava of the human heart. For a less heady comparison, consider this: The only other times this is done is to film major Hollywood productions like San Andreas and La La Land, or for major protests like the ones against police brutality in 2020 and advocation for a Gaza ceasefire. Basically, Kendrick was saying, “I AM LA. I am bigger than Hollywood. I am a world-changing event.” He wasn’t wrong. — Aaron Williams

11. “The Hillbillies” w/ Baby Keem

Though “Family Ties” launched it, “The Hillbillies” solidified the pgLang era of Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem’s careers. Released without much warning, the vlog-style Neal Farmer-directed video captures the true laid-back personas of both Lamar and Keem. Between time in London and Los Angeles (where Tyler The Creator joins them), Lamar and Keem do everything from dance outside a private jet, prance through a shopping mall, flex clothes and jewels, play video games, help Tyler tease news about Camp Flag Gnaw Carnival at Dodger Stadium, and more. Quirky camera tricks and numerous meme-worthy moments from Lamar and Keem add to the carefree and fun energy that the duo brings to the video, a rarity for the former when it comes to his visuals. — Wongo Okon

10. “B*tch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”

An early standout from Kendrick’s catalog, the video for “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” lays much of the groundwork for what will become recurring motifs throughout his videography: Striking, spiritualistic imagery (a funeral in a well-appointed church, with mourners dressed in white-on-white rather than the traditional black), an unexpected cameo from a Los Angeles legend (in this case, standup comic Mike Epps, who baptizes Kendrick in a “pool full a liquor,” a callback to another Good Kid, M.A.A.D single, “Swimming Pools”), and the abiding contrast/coexistence of communal celebration and solo introspection. A bonus highlight: The very 2010s unsubtle product placement shot, which scans as one of K. Dot’s most “here, damn” concessions to commercialism in a career full of them. — A.W.

9. “Element”

Kendrick Lamar’s promise to “make it look sexy” if he ever had to “slap a p*ssy ass n****” on “Element” hits a lot differently in the wake of his beef with Drake. Prophetic foreshadowing aside, “Element” is a prime example of the persona Lamar carries today: impenetrable, undefeatable, and unconquerable. Its visual, directed by Jonas Lindstroem & The Little Homies, captures Lamar in militant form. Nearly every time Lamar appears in the video, he is either standing above us or surrounded by a crew of supporters who are all on standby for a brutal fight. For three-and-a-half minutes, Lamar, bloody white t-shirt and all, embraces the boogeyman characteristic in a fine display of kingship in the rap game that resonates more than ever today. — W.O.

8. “These Walls” Feat. Bilal, Anna Wise & Thundercat

“It was Kendrick! Yeah, Kendrick Lamar!” Corey Holcomb proclaims this in the opening scene of the “These Walls” video which is actually titled “Behind The Walls: A Black Comedy.” The video, directed by Colin Tilley and The Little Homies, lives up to that title as we’re invited into a house party complete with drinking, drugs, fights, and loud music. In this one, Lamar doesn’t even rap the Grammy-winning song’s words until the very end. Instead, he enjoys a dance with a woman against a wall before breaking through it and falling into another room, all to continue the fun in another room. He also teams up with an overzealous Terry Crews to perform the Hit The Quan dance at a talent show. The colorful visual continues with a shift back to the party where Holcomb arrives to see Lamar with his lady, something that doesn’t entirely mind as he finds two for himself. The fun is short-lived for Holcomb who gets hauled away by two cops after he crashed into a police cruiser as he parked before entering the party. Comedic angle aside, the video, true to the song’s message, is a true visual representation of what occurs within the walls of the mind and a home as men like Kendrick and Holcomb aspire to explore the walls of a woman. — W.O.

7. “Loyalty” Feat. Rihanna

Loyalty,” Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna’s first-ever collaboration, is a standout on DAMN. for many reasons, one being the perilous visual the song received. For four minutes, Lamar and Rihanna flirt with many of life’s harmful dangers to prove that their love and loyalty to each other are unmatched. Rihanna taunts a man by spitting her gum on him, and when he angrily approaches her, Lamar is there to knock him out. He later dangles Rihanna off the roof of a building before they both lay on its edge as if they’re on ground level and not hundreds of feet in the air. The “Loyalty” visual ends with Lamar and Rihanna absorbing the blow of a tractor-trailer crashing into their car as Lamar does donuts in the middle of an intersection. — W.O.

6. “Count Me Out”

Though Kendrick Lamar’s video for “Count Me Out” isn’t as eventful as the other standout visuals in his videography, it excels by capturing the mindset that created< em>Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. The visual begins with a conversation with his therapist, played by Oscar award-winning actress Helen Mirren, where the two laugh about Lamar stealing a woman’s parking spot and delve into a more serious discussion about his self-doubts. The Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar-directed video then splits into three screens with a visual of Lamar rapping the first verse of “Count Me Out,” another of Mirren listening intently, and a third that pairs images of pain, anger, fear, joy, strife, contention, and more to Lamar’s words. — W.O.

5. “N95”

N95” is hands-down the best video to come down from the Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers era for a multitude of reasons. It succinctly captures the erratic and chaotic atmosphere of the song and the album as a whole. Want to see and hear where Kendrick’s head was in 2022? Look no further than the “N95” video. Furthermore, from a more general standpoint, it’s just a sick visual. It juxtaposes itself over and over again in just seconds, going from Kendrick in full sprint as he evades an angry mob to watching the rapper gracefully scales down steps by a waterfall. He sits in peace and reads a pgLang magazine before a car tumbles by a clears out chairs just a few away from the one he sits in. Add in shots of Lamar doing burpees, floating over the ocean in a Christ-like position, hitting donuts in a car with Baby Keem, and more, and you have a visual worthy of a top-five slot in Lamar’s career. — W.O.

4. “Alright”

Arguably the best of Kendrick Lamar’s videos, “Alright” earns its place thanks in part to bearing the hallmarks of Kendrick’s videos — community, camaraderie, visual metaphors for resilience — and throwing in one of the best-sounding unreleased songs of Kendrick’s entire catalog. It’s still the only place to hear this song, which by itself should be enough of a recommendation for this video, but just for the sake of argument, “Alright” is also the recipient of the 2016 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and was nominated for that year’s MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year. — A.W.

3. “Not Like Us”

This is why we’re here, people. A visual representation of Los Angeles culture, of Kendrick’s rap dominance, of his hometown hero status, the video also doubles as a bit of a wake for that poor OVO owl. From smashing an owl piñata to putting a live owl inside a cage, the video reflects the song’s primary goal of burying Kendrick’s longtime foe Drake, while at the same time, uses the controversy as an opportunity to highlight K Dot’s hometown, from the Tommy The Clown and DeMar DeRozan cameos to its raucous, impromptu community gathering at Compton City Hall. — A.W.

2. “DNA”

The best videos in Kendrick Lamar’s career came from his DAMN. era. Look no further than the “DNA” visual for proof of this. Don Cheadle stars as an interrogator ready to give Lamar a lie detector test when he is shocked into the same rhythm as the rapper, rapping the lyrics of “DNA” as if they both wrote the song from the same experience of anger and struggle. The moment takes a mental toll on both men, but Lamar reigns supreme as Cheadle succumbs to Lamar and lets him go before falling to his knees in defeat. For the rest of the “DNA” video, we watch an erratic Lamar shoot dice with friends, recount past events, show off his Grammys, and more all while a group of girls drive a car recklessly through city streets – a conclusion that pairs perfectly with the song’s chaotic second half. — W.O.

1. “Humble”

Humble” was the first single from Kendrick’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2017 album, DAMN., and its release heralded the largest leap the Compton artist had taken in public awareness in his career. It was his first solo No. 1 on the Hot 100, and it won Grammys for Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and most relevant here, Best Music Video. The video is another Dave Free masterwork, incorporating more of the religious iconography that Kendrick has grappled with throughout his career, borrowing as much from the distinctive visual style of Hype Williams as from Leonardo da Vinci, whose “Last Supper” plays centerpiece to the point Kendrick makes lyrically on “Humble.” To this day, it is still the most-viewed video on his YouTube channel. — A.W.

Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ Video Has Forced The LA Public Library To ‘Retire’ One Of Its Beloved Children’s Puppets

According to the “Not Like Us” opening disclaimer: “No Ovohoes were harmed during the making of the music video.” However, Kendrick Lamar vicious beating of an owl piñata (symbolic of Drake) in the visual has other entities hiding anything that resembles the animal.

Yesterday (July 5), the Los Angeles Public Library decided to retire its beloved owl puppet used for children’s programming. “Do we need to retire our owl puppet,” asked the page.

Whether the act was for the safety of the plushie or to show the library’s allegiance to hometown hero, Kendrick, the public showed just how tickled they were in the comment section of the TikTok video.

“Wow, the library was really the last safe space,” joked one user.

The Best Moments From Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Music Video

Following two months of dominating streaming platforms, Kendrick Lamar finally unveiled the music video for “Not Like Us,” on the 4th of July, no less. Let’s just say it’s a victory lap across the board, especially considering that some of the symbolism and shots aimed to debunk some of Drake’s major talking points across the beef. Nonetheless, the visuals of “Not Like Us” will undoubtedly extend its lifespan throughout the summer.

Directed by Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar, the music video comes on the heels of the Juneteenth concert at the Kia Forum where practically every Los Angeles rapper joined forces on stage for a moment of unity. The music video is another moment that exemplifies this effort. Plus, some of the symbolism across the visual will have you doubling back to catch some of the cryptic messages that you didn’t pick up on the first time around.

New Snippet

We were blessed enough to receive four new songs from Kendrick Lamar in the span of a few days. However, it seems like we might be fortunate enough to get even more music in the near future. Kicking off the “Not Like Us” video is a snippet of new music that we hope will be released soon.

Tommy The Clown’s appearance embodied Los Angeles in a major way. A staple in West Coast culture as a whole, Tommy’s segment at the Pop Out was undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights. To have him basically help lead the music video felt like a nod to Los Angeles’ history, both in music and dance. Plus, the choreography and shots in that final verse added an lighthearted touch to such a vicious song.

Considering the nature of the song and the allegations Kendrick made against Drake, the hop-scotch scene that aligns with the “A-Minor” line certainly isn’t a coincidence by any stretch.

Push Ups

Between the viral clip of Kendrick doing push-ups in Compton randomly with soul music playing in the background and Drake’s “Push Ups,” Kendrick has really been driving home the importance of calisthenic exercises. Plus, on “meet the grahams,” Kendrick also tells Adonis to “do some push-ups” instead of using Ozempic. Seems like the DAMN. rapper is trying to lead by example. However, considering the amount of Easter eggs we’re still uncovering from the beef two months later, this particular image could be referencing this TikTok that Drake did with a young fan last year. That’s just a guess.

Everybody Who Appears In Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ Video

Kendrick Lamar decided to shoot off some fireworks of his own last night (July 4) by dropping his new video for the hit Drake diss “Not Like Us.”. The visual is definitely a team effort, as a handful of notable folks make guest appearances. The list includes:

Tommy The Clown

Tommy The Clown, a Los Angeles icon, was previously at Lamar’s The Pop Out concert (as were a number of other folks mentioned below). Here, he kicks off the video by asking Lamar for a password and hitting play on the song.

Whitney Alford and children

This one is perhaps the video’s most notable guest: Alford is Lamar’s fiancée and their two children also appear, with the four of them dancing to the song. These cameos are presumably a clap-back at Drake: On “Family Matters,” he alleged that Dave Free is actually the father of one of Alford and Lamar’s kids. Speaking of Free…

Dave Free

…he’s in the video, too. He co-directed it, actually, indicating that there is no bad blood between him and Kendrick.

DeMar DeRozan

This is a natural cameo, since the NBA star, who started his career in Drake’s hometown of Toronto before stints in San Antonio and Chicago, is mentioned in the song’s lyrics: “I’m glad DeRoz’ came home, y’all didn’t deserve him neither.”

Mustard

Another logical inclusion: Mustard produced “Not Like Us,” and he drives home the Drake diss here by rocking a Toronto Blue Jays hat in the video.

YG

YG found himself involved in the Drake beef: Drake gave YG a positive shout-out on “Family Matters,” and while some thought YG later dissed Drake on his song “Weird,” YG denied it.

Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith

After launching his career with Top Dawg Entertainment, Lamar has moved onto a new label arrangement. It appears to be all love between him and his former boss, though, as Top Dawg pops up in the new video.

Kendrick Lamar & Dave Free Appear To Be On Good Terms At “The Pop Out”

Earlier this week, Kendrick Lamar hosted his eagerly anticipated “Pop Out” event in LA, joined by several of his celebrity friends. YG, Tyler, The Creator, Jay Rock, and many more made appearances. Dr. Dre even joined Kendrick onstage and kicked off “Not Like Us,” one of the defining tracks of the hitmaker’s viral feud with Drake.

On top of the various peers who performed, many were also spotted in the crowd, cheering Kendrick on throughout the historic show. Of course, Dave Free was also in attendance, proving that he’s still on solid terms with Kendrick. For those who don’t recall, Drake accused Free of fathering a child with Kendrick’s fiancee Whitney Alford on “Family Matters.”

Dave Free Joins Kendrick Lamar At LA Show

Clearly, those allegations don’t appear to be true, as both Free and Alford were seen at the show. In fact, Alford even brought along her two children with Kendrick. He was later seen making his exit alongside Free. This seemingly goes to show that Drizzy’s wild claims didn’t get in the way of their bond. The clip arrives shortly after fans noticed that Kendrick put Free at the very top of the credits after his “Pop Out,” which many thought was a direct jab at Drake.

Either way, Drake’s supporters are continuing to make jokes about the claims he made about Free and Alford. One of Drizzy’s biggest fans, DJ Akademiks, even Tweeted that neither of them showed up for the show as it was unfolding. He later deleted the post, though other users had already captured his false claims in a screenshot. What do you think of Kendrick Lamar getting spotted walking alongside Dave Free at “The Pop Out” in LA? Are you surprised or not? DJ Akademiks Caught Deleting Tweet Claiming Dave Free & Whitney Alford Skipped Kendrick Lamar’s Show

DJ Akademiks has always made it crystal clear to his fans that Drake is his favorite artist. Overall, this was especially prevalent during Drake’s feud with Kendrick Lamar. Although fans were mostly on K-Dot’s side, Akademiks found himself defending Drizzy over and over again. Furthermore, there were multiple times when Akademiks’ reporting on his pages would lean one way. For instance, his Akademiks TV page was doing a whole lot of cheerleading last night.

If you follow the account, you probably saw all sorts of sarcastic tweets go out. It was a brutal display, and there was one instance where Ak got ahead of himself. In the tweet down below, you can see that a fan took a screenshot of a deleted Akademiks TV post. When you see the contents of the tweet, you will see why Ak took it down. Essentially, he claimed that Whitney Alford and Dave Free were not in attendance at the show. However, that was disproven by various videos in which Alford could be seen with her kids. Not to mention, Dave Free was heavily included in the credits.

DJ Akademiks Got Proven Wrong Incredibly Fast

Drake fans were in complete disarray last night. If the “OVO Community” has ever popped up on your timeline, you know they can do some damage. However, if you are a Kendrick fan, then you had yourself a pretty incredible night. For DJ Akademiks, it wasn’t the greatest. But that’s okay. It seems like Drake is looking to drop some music this summer. If you are a fan of the Canadian, all is not lost, at least for now.

Kendrick Lamar Seemingly Trolls Drake By Putting Dave Free At The Top Of His “Pop Out” Credits

Kendrick Lamar had the entire hip-hop world in the palm of his hand on Wednesday night. Overall, this was thanks to his “Pop Out” show on Juneteenth in Inglewood. The night was an incredible one for hip-hop fans of all ages. The OGs were treated to legends like Dr. Dre and even South Central staples like Tommy The Clown. Meanwhile, the youth were treated to some of the best young acts the West Coast has to offer. If you love hip-hop, last night was truly something special.

Throughout the evening, fans were looking for clues in regards to whether or not Kendrick was dissing Drake. Of course, there were plenty of clues out there. One of which involved none other than Kendrick’s right hand man, Dave Free. On “Family Matters,” Drake accused Dave Free of being the father of one of Lamar’s kids. Well, on Wednesday night, Kendrick had his fiancee Whitney and his two kids in attendance. Furthermore, Kendrick made sure Dave Free was at the top of the Credits for the evening.

Kendrick Lamar Knows How To Be Subtle

Fans on social media immediately felt as if this was a direct shot at Drake. After all, Dave Free was supposed to be a big punchline for Drizzy and the OVO fans out there. Instead, Kendrick flipped it on them, and he is standing by his guy. Dave Free is the creative mind behind pgLang, so it should come as no surprise that he was also listed as a creative director for the event. If one thing is for certain, every single person behind last night’s event should be proud of what they put together.

Drake Vs. Kendrick Lamar: DJ Akademiks Alleges Drake Lied About Dave Free & Whitney Alford Affair

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been beefing for what feels like a full month and a half. Overall, the feud has been going on for over 10 years, but the climax has finally taken place. Following the release of “Not Like Us” and “The Heart Part 6,” it was clear that Lamar had won the war. Although he still has some allegations to address, it has been made abundantly clear that fans are feeling Kendrick’s output more. It has been a rough week for Drake, and it could get a whole lot worse if “Not Like Us” becomes the number one song in the world.

Yesterday, DJ Akademiks was on stream and once again, it was not looking good for Drake. At one point, Akademiks spoke on some of the lies that were spewed during the feud. In the eyes of Ak, Kendrick certainly lied on Drake during multiple points. However, as it pertains to Drake, he noted that the Dave Free and Whitney Alford claims were completely false. As many of you know, Drake kept trying to say that Dave Free and Whitney Alford had a child together. He doubled down on this in the cover art for “The Heart Part 6,” although it’s clear that this was just a narrative device.

DJ Akademiks Spills The Beans On Drake

Of course, this lie brings a lot of credibility issues to Drake’s side of the beef. Now, fans are questioning everything Drake said. Furthermore, fans now believe that “The Heart Part 6” is officially the worst song in the feud as it has been proven false. For now, the only allegation against Kendrick that is sticking, is the domestic violence claims. Kendrick has yet to say anything on this front, and fans are definitely concerned about the validity of the allegations.

Let us know what you think about all of this, in the comments section down below. Do you believe that this looks particularly bad for Drizzy right now? What do you make of DJ Akademiks seemingly going against Drake heavily, for the first time in the battle? Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for the latest news and updates from around the music world. We will continue to keep you informed on all of your favorite artists and their upcoming projects.

Who Is Dave Free & What’s His Relationship To Kendrick Lamar?

Kendrick Lamar’s long-time business partner Dave Free has been trending quite a bit lately, as Drake repeatedly mentions him in the ongoing brutal rap feud between himself and Kendrick. An Inglewood, California native, Free goes back many years with Kendrick, both in a professional capacity and as a deeply-rooted friend. The exec has served as one of the key figures in Kendrick’s musical catalogue, helping to construct most of the visual releases which accompany projects such as To Pimp A Butterfly, Damn, and Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. Free also co-directed the concert film Kendrick Lamar Live From Paris: The Big Steppers Tour, which is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Let’s take a moment to examine what Drake said about the record executive, check the validity of these claims, and highlight the bond shared between Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free.

Right around the time Kendrick Lamar was first getting buzz for his ability to write rhymes, Dave Free was working as a computer technician. Kendrick and Dave are childhood friends who go all the way back to high school. After meeting TDE founder and CEO Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith through a work connection, Dave showed the label head Kendrick’s music, and the rest is history. Top signed Kendrick Lamar to TDE in 2005, and brought Dave Free along shortly thereafter as an in-house producer.

From there, Dave linked with Sounwave, Tae Beast, and Willie B, creating a production team known as Digi+Phonics. The team were responsible for handling most of the production needs of TDE acts such as ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and others, and were even named on BET’s list of the top 10 producers of 2013. Free received numerous accolades for his work with the Digi+Phonics, solidifying his position at the label as he transitioned into an executive role.

He Became Co-President Of TDE & Co-Founder Of PGLang

While crafting beats and working the boards with Digi+Phonics, Dave Free was promoted up through the TDE ranks, eventually becoming the label co-president alongside Punch. During this time, Kendrick Lamar hired Dave Free as his manager, and the pair worked closely co-directing music videos and other works. Dave and Kendrick have won MTV Video Music Awards, Grammy Awards, and numerous other accolades for their work, strengthening their creative bond. Free eventually parted ways with TDE in 2019, and served as a free agent before linking with Kendrick for their latest and greatest business venture.

In March 2020, Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free officially launched PGLang. Kendrick has been working with the independent multimedia company exclusively since leaving TDE after the release of Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in 2022. The company also serves as the base for Kendrick’s cousin and protege Baby Keem, and has even released their own cell phone. Through PGLang, Dave Free has gone on to work with brands such as CashApp, Calvin Klein, and Converse, and even inked a deal to produce a feature film with the creators of South Park.

What Did Drake Say About Dave Free?

The heated exchange between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has resulted in nearly a dozen scathing records hitting the streets, each with ad-hominem attacks and unsubstantiated rumors. On tracks such as “Family Matters” and “The Heart Part 6,” Drake makes specific mention of Dave Free, claiming that the music exec carried out an affair with Kendrick Lamar’s long-time fiancé Whitney Alford, and may even be the biological father of Kendrick Lamar’s son Enoch. On “Family Matters,” Drake raps “I heard that one of ’em little kids might be Dave Free/ Don’t make it Dave Free’s/ ‘Cause if your GM is your BM secret BD/ Then this is all makin’ plenty f***in’ sense to me.”

Despite Drake’s insistence on these claims, there seems to be literally nothing linking this rumor to reality, as the best evidence the OVO camp could provide was a comment containing a heart emoji that Dave left on one of Whitney’s Instagram posts. A screenshot of the comment was used as the cover art for the diss track “The Heart Part 6,” though the track has largely been overshadowed by Kendrick’s smash-hit banger “Not Like Us.” At this time, neither Kendrick Lamar, Dave Free, or Whitney have come forward to discuss the drama.
