Ice-T Opens Up About Parenting: “They Grow Up With You”

During a recent interview with People, Ice-T opened up about his parenting style. The 65-year-old admits that the way he and his wife Coco raise their daughter is unconventional, however, he says it works for them. He also shared his thoughts on the 50th anniversary of hip hop, claiming that it’s a genre that brings different generations together.

“The thing about hip-hop is beside being 50, it’s one of the few musics where parents are almost in the same culture as their kids,” he explained. “The only thing is our generation, the early generations, we refused to let our kids be cooler than us. We’re like, ‘You think you understand hip-hop, but you’re not from that golden era.” He went on, revealing what he believes to be the key to parenting.

“The key to having kids is having parental guidance — not necessarily parental control, but guidance to help them understand what it is,” Ice-T says. “My daughter was listening to 2 Live Crew and whatnot. My son used to sing Wu-Tang Clan without saying motherf*cker, and it was amazing.” He adds, “When you talk, it’s kind of like they grow up with you and you share that common bond which is beautiful. It’s beautiful.”

Although the way Ice-T raises his kids is far from the norm, he’s not worried about criticism. “You got to remember this: for anything anybody says about me and Coco, there’s a million billion people that are like f*ck that,” he explains. “So are you gonna listen to the negative? I always say you’re insulated by love. You got so many people out there that love you. You can’t pay attention to the idiots, you know?” He also says that his 7-year-old daughter with Coco, Chanel, is just a “normal kid” enjoying social media. “It’s fun and she likes doing it,” he explained, “We’re not afraid of anything happening.”

Ice-T Defends Coco’s Risque 4th Of July Photos Amid Backlash

Ice-T’s wife, Coco Austin, was incredibly hot on the Fourth of July. So much so that she was barely wearing any clothing and decided it was the perfect opportunity to show out to her Instagram fans. “Happy ‘4th of July’!! I’m celebrating in AZ. Yes, it gets HOT outside.” Not only was it hot outside, the comments on the post got heated as well, with many people criticizing Coco for inappropriate content.

To be fair, the comments might have a point. Coco wore a revealing white G-string and a red Arizona tank cut off mid-chest. Essentially, it left nothing to the imagination. For example, one person said on the IG post, “You are a mother…how do you think your daughter will feel when she sees these pictures??” Ice-T clapped back with a classic line that would make any rapper proud: “Go do some situps, b*tch. Lol.” While some are incredulous that Ice-T would approve of such photos being shown to the public, he doesn’t seem to mind at all.

Ice would like for people to “Simply Unfollow” if they aren’t okay with the pics. His love for Coco remains ever-strong. He recently went on the That Moment with Daymond John podcast episode to discuss why the two got married. Ice-T says he was watching plenty of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne and what they were doing as a couple. T thinks Ozzy wouldn’t be where he is today if Sharon hadn’t been running the show. He thinks of Coco the same way. She runs the show while he says he picked a partner who was ready for all of it. And despite the critics, Coco will no doubt continue to be herself on social media.

Ice-T says that, despite his fame and wealth, he still eats breakfast at Denny’s and iHop. Appearing on Drink Champs with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN, Ice-T explained money hasn’t changed everything about his life. He also revealed he and his wife, Coco Austin, still shop at Target.

“Yeah we still shop at Target. We at Target,” he admitted. “Motherfuckas think at some point, humans leave the planet. Like, we don’t eat at Taco Bell or like, motherfuckas will be like, ‘He goes to Target.’ Like what the fuck, if you need Target shit! Where do you go if you need Target type shit?!”
