Travis Scott’s Coachella Performance Hyped Up With Historic Expectations

Travis Scott’s highly-anticipated return to Coachella will be making history as the “most significant experience” the festival has ever had, according to the festival’s chief organizer, Paul Tollett. Speaking with The Desert Sun, Tollett, who serves as president of the festival’s parent company, Goldenvoice, provided some insight into Scott’s special role for next year’s event.

“That’s going to be pretty interesting,” Tollett said, as caught by HipHopDX. “He laid out what he wants to do. It’s a little too early to give any details, but I think it’s the most significant experience the festival has ever had. Anything that gives you a chance to walk around and see something that’s interesting, that’s what discovery is all about.”

Tollett also addressed concerns about fans’ safety, following the tragic crowd crush at Scott’s 2021 Astroworld festival, which resulted in the deaths of 10 concertgoers. “We’ve done Travis’ concerts before, and we know how to run this,” Tollett said. “It’s on the main stage where we have barricades set up and are prepared for any situation.” With Scott not being listed as a headliner for the event, fans have been theorizing the role he will have since the lineup was announced. In a press release, organizers describe the event as a “Cactus Jack desert takeover” that will “curate a fully immersive and experiential world within the desert.”

Travis Scott To Perform At Coachella

In addition to Scott, other performers include Lady Gaga, Green Day. Charli XCX, Post Malone, Megan Thee Stallion, Missy Elliott, and more. It will kick off on the weekend of April 11-13 with a second weekend from April 18-20. Check out the full lineup for next year’s Coachella below.

The 10 Biggest Questions About The 2025 Coachella Lineup

COACHELLA_2025_LINEUP(1024x450)

It’s still 2024, but the 2025 music festival season has already arrived. Which is to say, the Coachella lineup is here.

On Wednesday evening, America’s preeminent music festival released the poster for next year’s bill, including headliners Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, and Travis Scott. Further down, there’s everyone from Charli XCX to Basement Jaxx, Anitta to GloRilla, Keshi to Kraftwerk. It’s a stacked lineup, one that invites a few questions. Let’s begin with the most pressing matter…

1. Did One Band Make History On The Coachella Poster?

The first name that drew my attention on the Coachella 2025 poster wasn’t headliners Lady Gaga, Green Day, Post Malone, or Travis Scott. It wasn’t Megan Thee Stallion, in a victory lap from her mighty 2024, or FKA twigs, who will put on a high-concept spectacle, or Japanese Breakfast, even though her inclusion means we should be getting the follow-up to 2021’s excellent Jubilee next year. It was The Misfits. Specifically, The Misfits logo. Is this the first time a band’s font has appeared on a Coachella poster? The closest other examples I can think of are AC/DC in 2015 and Prince in 2008, but this is more unusual. Unprecedented even. Those were symbols; this is a specific font. Hopefully there’s plenty of french onion soup to go around.

2. Green Day Over Charli XCX?

No offense to Green Day, who are out on the road playing a pair of all-time classics (Dookie and American Idiot) from front to back, but it’s a little surprising that they got the Saturday headliner slot over Charli XCX. Over 30 years after releasing their first album, Billie Joe Armstrong & Co. are still more recognizable to the general public than Charli XCX, but for the Coachella crowd, the queen of Brat is a bigger and more zeitgeist-defining draw. I’m sure Green Day will put on a great show — they always do — and in the long run, they have the lead in historical significance. But right now, it’s Charli, baby.

3. Can Lady Gaga Top Her 2017 Headlining Set?

It’s been an up and down year for Lady Gaga. Joker: Folie à Deux flopped at the box office, and “Disease,” the first single from her upcoming album, stalled at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Yet, even with those speed bumps, she helped kick off the 2024 Olympics and her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Die With A Smile,” is one of the most-streamed songs of the year. Gaga previously headlined in 2017 (this was also the year she filmed scenes for A Star Is Born on the Empire Polo Club grounds), albeit as a replacement for Beyoncé. This time, she has months to prepare for “a massive night of chaos in the desert.” Gaga will find a way to one-up herself.

4. What Is Travis Scott Up To?

All the bottom of the poster, even below the smallest-font Sunday acts (shout out to Yulia Niko), it reads, “Travis Scott Designs The Desert.” What does that mean? Well, according to a press release, the “Mo City Flexologist” rapper is “headlining the main stage on Saturday night where he will debut an entirely new era of music to the world.” He will also “curate a fully immersive and experiential world within the desert.” Scott was supposed to headline in 2022, but he was dropped from the bill following the Astroworld tragedy.

5. Who Will Post Malone Bring Out As Special Guests?

This year alone, Post Malone has been on songs with Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Morgan Wallen, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, and Chris Stapleton, among many others. It’s a near-certainty that he’ll be joined on Sunday by some surprise famous faces. Probably not Taylor or Beyoncé (Posty popping up during the Cowboy Carter Netflix halftime show on Christmas is more likely), but nonetheless, get ready for a star-studded set.

6. Can We Expect A Blackpink Mini-Reunion?

In a recent interview with Billboard, Lisa was asked how the members of Blackpink keep in touch during their respective solo careers. “We know each other so well and know how much energy we have to put into every single project,” The White Lotus star said. “So we want to support and say, ‘You did really well!’ Like, Jennie and Rosie just released their own songs, and we’re on texts, we’re on FaceTime. They’re like family.” Will Coachella double as a Blackpink family reunion? Lisa gets a prime spot on Friday, while Jennie is scheduled to perform on Sunday. What, no Rosé on Saturday?

7. Yo Gabba Gabba?

Yo Gabba Gabba.

8. Who Will Be This Year’s Knocked Loose?

Metalcore greats Knocked Loose went viral in 2023 for their wild Coachella set. To quote one tweet, “Influencer babes are stage diving during Knocked Loose’s Coachella set.” Billie Eilish was there, and she was vibing. So was everyone in the circle pit. But who will be this year’s Knocked Loose, the heavy band that captivates Coachella beyond their usual audience? My money’s on either Gel, who released the heavy-and-hook-filled Persona EP over the summer, or Australia’s Speed. They have Only One Mode and it’s ferocious.

9. Where’s The Country?

Since the beginning of July, the top of the Billboard Hot 100 has been dominated by three artists: Post Malone, Morgan Wallen, and Shaboozey. Some combination of that trio has had the No. 1 song in the country for every week but one, when Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” took over the world. That’s an incredible run, and Post Malone and Shaboozey are playing Coachella. But they’re the only country or country-adjacent acts on the bill. No Cody Johnson, no Kacey Musgraves. Maybe Coachella didn’t want to double-book with Stagecoach, which takes place later that month, but you would think arguably the biggest genre of 2024 would be better represented.

10. What Will Be The Most Talked-About Non-Headliner Set Of The Weekend(s)?

Somehow, Missy Elliott — one of the most electric, unique, and influential artists in hip-hop history — has never performed at Coachella. To make up for the long-overdue slight, she gets second billing on Friday night. Elliott played all the hits during her first-ever headlining tour earlier this year: “Sock It 2 Me,” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “Gossip Folks,” “WTF (Where They From),” “Lose Control.” Expect a crowd-pleasing set from an icon.

Travis Scott Will Finally Return To Coachella In 2025

Travis Scott will reportedly perform on a Saturday night at next year’s Coachella music festival, according to TMZ. Citing sources who have gotten a peak at next year’s lineup, the outlet says Lady Gaga, Green Day, and Post Malone, will also be taking up spots on stage throughout the festivities. For Scott, the event will mark his first time performing at Coachella since 2017. The length of time in between doesn’t come without festival organizers having tried to get him back sooner.

Scott was originally slated to perform at Coachella in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancelation of the event. Both sides tried to reschedule for 2022, but that was nixed after the infamous tragedy at Scott’s Astroworld the year prior. Scott’s Saturday night set is expected to be a “special guest” performance to close out the night.

Fans on social media have already been expressing their excitement that Scott will be returning to Coachella in 2025. “Coachella is going to feel different this time around,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. Another added: “Another earth tremble from Travis performance.”

The Coachella announcement comes amid a major year for Scott, who dropped his sophomore mixtape, Days Before Rodeo, on streaming services in celebration of its tenth anniversary in August. The rerelease debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, moving 361,000 album-equivalent units, of which 331,000 were pure album sales. Before that, he kicked off the year by performing  “My Eyes”, “Fein”, and “I Know?” from Utopia at the Grammy Awards. His album was nominated for Rap Album of the Year, but lost out to Killer Mike and his project, Michael. Be on the lookout for further updates on Travis Scott and Coachella on HotNewHipHop.

Travis Scott Is Reportedly Headlining Coachella In 2025, Along With Lady Gaga And Post Malone

According to TMZ, sources with direct knowledge of the 2025 Coachella lineup have confirmed that the festival’s headliners next year will include Lady Gaga, Post Malone, and, as a sign of his ultimate redemption, Travis Scott. Green Day is also rumored to join the bill.

The closest Scott came to headlining the festival was in 2021, when he was initially booked to perform for 2022, but dropped from the bill after his disastrous closing set at his own Astroworld Festival that November, which resulted in 10 deaths, hundreds of injuries, several hundred combined lawsuits, and the upheaval of the festival industry in the years since. In 2022, Kanye West promised to bring Travis out for his own headlining set, which itself was canceled when Ye pulled the plug on negotiations over unreasonable staging demands. Scott settled instead for promoting his then-upcoming album Utopia with billboards along the freeway to Coachella.

That album’s release in August 2023 brought with it the first signs that, while legal proceedings continue, many fans have already forgiven Scott for his missteps at Astroworld, driving the album to one of the best streaming totals of the year. This August, he followed up with the re-release of his breakout mixtape, Days Before Rodeo, to DSPs, again leading hip-hop’s streaming totals for the year. Travis’ return to Coachella will be his first since 2017, when he sub-headlined before being rumored for the canceled 2020 edition.

Why Did Kendrick Lamar & Rihanna Turn Down Coachella 2025?

Over the past few years, there’s been a lot of discussion over the future of Coachella festival, as the massive music fest tries to find its way in an increasingly fractured music landscape. While this year’s headliners — Doja Cat, Lana Del Rey, and Tyler The Creator — put on an impressive show, there were still reports that the fest sold way fewer tickets than normal. And now, in another blow, it turns out the fest was reportedly unable to secure a pair of A-list headliners to ensure a sellout in 2025: Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna. So why did they turn down Coachella?

According to Bloomberg, from which the report originates, both artists are way too busy to put in the sort of work it takes to put together a Coachella-headlining-worthy set.

Kendrick is, of course, using those resources to build his Super Bowl Halftime Show headlining set, and preparing to go on a major stadium tour afterward. Meanwhile, Rihanna, who is presumably still working on her ninth album as she raises two boys with ASAP Rocky, doesn’t “need the money or the exposure.”

So what does that mean for Coachella?

Paul Tollett, president and CEO of Goldenvoice, Coachella’s organizer, is apparently searching high and low for headliners that can restore the festival to its former glory, but Bloomberg writes that Coachella may be “a victim of its own success.” The fest needs to book the biggest names to set itself apart and meet the expectations fans have set for it after 20 years, but those names don’t need Coachella anymore — they can make more from their tours or movies or multimedia empires (in one example, Bloomberg notes Coachella pays between $8 and $12 million for headliners, but Beyoncé and Taylor Swift can make $15 million).

That leaves Goldenvoice in a tough spot, for sure, but the good news is: Your favorite artists are thriving — and there’s plenty of room for new artists to move on up.

Kendrick Lamar & Rihanna Reportedly Turned Down Headlining Coachella Next Year

Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna fans are desperate for a new album, but it looks like they might not have much to promote… Right? Well, according to a recent Bloomberg report, Goldenvoice’s president Paul Tollet is shopping around for Coachella 2025 headliners, and asked the “LOYALTY.” duo if the would be down. Apparently, they turned the offer down, although this doesn’t necessarily indicate that they won’t be coming out with something soon. This report also claimed that K.Dot will go on a stadium tour in 2025, and his Super Bowl halftime show next year also suggests that he’s got something to roll out.

As for RiRi… We’re all out of guesses. We don’t know if she’s just really working that hard on perfecting her next record over the course of almost a decade at this point. Also, Rihanna continues to grow her business empire and her family, so she has plenty of extracurricular reasons to maybe leave the music to the side at this point. Die-hards hope that this isn’t the case, but at this point, we have to be pessimistic rather than blindly hopeful.

Kendrick Lamar & Rihanna Allegedly Turned Coachella Down

In addition, we also need to compare this reported Coachella rejection to the Super Bowl halftime show. When Rihanna performed last year, she didn’t follow it up with an album release, which was very disappointing even for the fans hyped about her pregnancy reveal. As for Kendrick Lamar, he’s got his headlining slot coming up in New Orleans on February 9, one that the Barbadian singer is very excited for. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee an album rollout, or even new material. But we can’t imagine that the Compton lyricist didn’t attack Drake with a plan to have this lead into something larger or what he really wants to talk about and share with the world.

Whether or not you think Kendrick Lamar deserved the Super Bowl slot is another story. Regardless of that debate, he and Rihanna continue to be at the top of people’s “most anticipated albums” list. Coachella-goers next year sadly won’t see them on the main stage, but this speculative discussion around their next moves will continue regardless of a “yes” or “no” answer. As such, no report or theory will close the door or open it when it comes to their next record, unless either of them says anything to the contrary.

Kid Cudi found himself in a whole lot of pain back in April when he injured his leg during a performance at Coachella. Overall, the footage of the accident was quite harrowing as the artist jumped off stage and twisted up his ankle. This subsequently led to a stay at the hospital where Cudi even had to get surgery. It was not a fun time for the artist, and he was pretty forthcoming about what he was going through. Not to mention, he even had to delay a tour.

However, throughout all of this hardship, Cudi has shown tremendous perseverance and determination. He has been rehabbing his leg for months, and after a few weeks of hardship, it seems like things are finally looking up for the artist. Below, you can see a video of the artist walking normally. While he still has some rehab to go through, it appears as though Cudi is feeling less pain and appears much happier than before.

Kid Cudi found himself in a scary situation just last month during a performance at Coachella. Overall, fans were excited to see Cudi in action especially since he was called in for a special second weekend performance. However, that excitement eventually became concern as Cudi injured himself. While jumping off the stage to go interact with fans, Cudi landed in an awkward manner and hurt his foot. He was subsequently taken to the hospital where it was revealed that he had a broken foot.

Cudi eventually had surgery on this foot and since that time, he has been looking to recover as quickly as possible in time for his tour. While taking to Instagram this week, Cudi revealed that he went through a second surgery on his foot. In the post below, you can see Cudi laid up in his hospital bed, where he appeared to be in good spirits.

Kid Cudi Updates Fans On His Tour Following Coachella Injury

Earlier this year, Kid Cudi made waves at Coachella. He surprised fans with a last minute set during the festival’s second weekend. There he unpacked some of his recent INSANO tracks making the live debut of multiple songs. The performance was by all means a pretty big success, but what everyone was talking about came at the end of the show when Cudi jumped off stage. News made the rounds later that day that the rapper had actually broken his foot in the jump and required surgery.

Since then he’s been pretty active in sharing updates with fans through his recovery. One of those announcements revealed that his surgery went well and he was on the way to recovery, but it came with some bad news as well. He revealed that his tour had to be canceled because of the time he needed to take to heal. That came just a few weeks after he had announced the tour in the first place, which was due to feature Pusha T, Jaden, and more as openers. Last week he even showed fans the particularly brutal x-rays of his foot that required surgery. Now he’s once again sharing news with fans on how things are going. Check out his most recent update below.

Tina Knowles Reveals Why Beyonce Educating Her Fans Through Music Can Scare Her As A Mother

Tina Knowles says that her daughter Beyonce’s commitment to educating her fanbase through her music can scare her at times. Appearing on the Naked Beauty podcast, Knowles recalled Beyonce’s iconic performance at Coachella in 2018, which she later documented for the film, Homecoming.

“What I’m so proud of that Beyonce does constantly– whether it was Black Is King, showing African culture in such a beautiful, royal way– and she gets a lot of heat for it all the time. She’s always pushing the envelope and making conversation happen. And I remember her telling me at Coachella, because I was like, ‘I don’t think those people got it tonight.’ I was in the front and I was like, ‘When you start doing all that fraternity stuff,’ I was like, ‘They were looking so confused,’ and I was like, ‘This girl came and asked me, was the Black national anthem your new single.’ And I said, ‘They not getting it. You not connecting and I’m really worried.’”

From there, she recalled Beyonce saying, “‘Mom, some people will get it today, some people will get it next week, some people will get it next year, but I want them to go research what that is, what that means, and I want them to understand it and create conversation. I feel like I was put on this earth to do that. Not just to be an entertainer but to ring the bell and get people educated.’” Knowles added that it makes her scared as a mother for her daughter to be handling it all.
