Burna Boy On Afrobeats: “They Lack Substance”

Burna Boy’s recent comments seem to have rubbed people the wrong way. During a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the Nigerian-bred singer shared his thoughts about the lack of substance involved in Afrobeats. Burna Boy claims that many of the artists lack real “life experience.” In his opinion, the genre has become about “nothing” “Half of them … 90% of them, have almost no real-life experiences that they can understand.”

Burna Boy also noted that music doesn’t have realistic depictions about the pitfalls of life. “That’s why you hear most Nigerian music, African Music, or Afrobeats, as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. There is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything. It’s just a great time, an amazing time. But at the end of the day, life isn’t an amazing time,” he told Lowe.

Burna Boy Has Faced Major Backlash Over His Comments

After clips of the interview made its rounds on social media, many people blasted the artist for his statements. “This is ignorance at its peak! A great time is not ‘nothing’. It is something. Something tangible. Afrobeats has lifted a lot of people out of depression. During #EndSARS protested using Davido’s FEM as our anthem. @burnaboy should stop capping rubbish just because he wants to sell his album,” one person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). Whereas another user said: “Overall, he could have passed his message without making the genre look bad. I’m a big time Burna Boy fan by the way, but the truth has to be said.”

Another person commented: “Man just lose it saying this.. disrespecting people work! This is odd bruv.” However, some offered a different perspective, and believed Burna Boy might have had a point. “He actually said Most of “Afrobreats” and in this context I’m sure he’s referring to Albums. When you listen to most of these “Afrobeats” albums, it’s just a collection of maybe hit songs and even some you don’t get the album feeling to it at all. That doesn’t even mean we don’t have good Afrobeats stuff out there,” someone wrote.

Burna Boy

Nigerian sensation Burna Boy prepares for the imminent release of his seventh album, I Told Them…, with an in-depth conversation alongside Zane Lowe in New York City.

The discussion touches on the album’s creation and Burna’s path to his current global triumph. The artist delves into the significance of numerology and the album’s theme of the “12 jewels to a happy life,” shedding light on what distinguishes this upcoming project. With anticipation building for the album’s release, Burna Boy’s insights offer fans a glimpse into his creative process and his unique perspective on life and success.

“It kind of showed me exactly the way I wanted to express what I was feeling and what my unit was feeling,” Burna Boy said of the album. “The spirit of my unit. Just put that in because this is every day. This is a side where people don’t really get to see because I don’t really care for anyone to see. I have fun with it like this. But I felt like this time, this is a way… How do I put it? A more understandable way to pass that feeling and that energy across.

“And at the same time, showing you that’s… Not you. Showing everyone, really, that the combination of worlds is something that we haven’t really capitalized on. Because at the end of the day, once we’re all unified, everything else, the fruits of that just take care of everything.”

Burna Boy is getting ready to hit the world with his latest hits collection. After releasing the tracklist, fans now know J. Cole will join the Nigerian star on the album. Also joining Burna Boy will be Dave, 21, Savage, and Byron Messia, among others.

Burna Boy And Dave Collab For “Cheat On Me”

The Afro-fusion expert Burna Boy is here with his seventh new single of 2023. This track is called, “Cheat On Me” and it was just released on August 22. It features the likes of Dave, the UK rap phenom that has blown up this year. The two have previously worked together on Dave’s smash hit “Location.” That track appears on Dave’s 2019 album PSYCHODRAMA, and it currently sits at over 456 million plays on Spotify. With that being said, it is no shocker that these two feel they can make another fire song in the studio.

Burna Boy might just have done it again with “Cheat On Me.” This new cut is very mellow and fun with a chipmunk soul-inspired production. The high-pitched vocals are on the intro and chorus, “Ah, and I couldn’t see, I was cheating on, cheating on me.” It also has Burna’s signature Afro-type rhythm that is very pleasing to the ears. Both he and Dave deliver emotional verses about having the finer things in life while being with those they care for the most.

J. Cole To Appear On Burna Boy’s New Album “I Told Them,” Tracklist Revealed

Burna Boy’s new album I Told Them… is coming out this week, and now that the tracklist is out, fans are even more excited. Moreover, the full breakdown includes previous singles like “Big 7” and confirmation that his 21 S*vage collab will appear on the project. However, this news also brought us plenty of surprises through the list of features on it, which boasts some impressive names. There’s his Byron Messia collab “Talibans II,” a song with Seyi Vibez, and a guest appearance from Dave on the track “Cheat On Me.” But the feature that got fans really excited (especially hip-hop heads) is none other than Dreamville’s own J. Cole.

Furthermore, there’s even some audio floating around that seems to be a snippet of their new collaboration, a track called “Thanks.” In it, you can mostly hear Burna Boy singing over some glistening guitars, whereas J. Cole provides some ethereal ad-libs like his classic “Cole world.” Accompanied by footage of the two talking, this really ramped up anticipation for I Told Them…, as these two have never put out a song together. We expect nothing less than a great verse from the North Carolina MC that will compellingly compliment the Nigerian superstar’s performance.

Preview Of New Burna Boy & J. Cole Collab

Amid the afrobeats and dancehall artist’s sold-out shows and successful singles, his new record is poised to dominate the industry as his others have. In addition, it’s important to note that these are only a few collaborations, so Burna Boy set himself up to carry a lot of the weight on I Told Them… alone. No doubt he will deliver on that goal, and it’s also heartening to see that this isn’t a hodgepodge of different voices and approaches. What remains to be seen is if there’s a particular sonic approach on this album that differ from the 32-year-old’s past work.

I Told Them… Tracklist

Meanwhile, Cole brought us this feature in August along with his production work on Mike WiLL Made-It and Lil Uzi Vert’s new single, “Blood Moon.” As such, there will be a lot of greatness to digest from the skilled lyricist and beatmaker. Hearing him in this zone will be a treat to witness, so make sure you tune in this Friday. For more news and the latest updates on J. Cole and Burna Boy, come back to HNHH.
