SZA Wins “Best International Artist” At The BRIT Awards

SZA beat out a crowded field to take home “Best International Artist” at the BRIT Awards this week. The St. Louis singer took home the award ahead of the likes of Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift. In fact it, was a quiet night overall for Swift. Cyrus took home “International Song of the Year” for “Flowers”. However, it should be noted that Swift did not have a nomination in this category. Previously, Swift had topped SZA for “Album of the Year” at the Grammys.

Elsewhere, it was a rough night for up-and-coming rapper Central Cee. Despite entering the night with the second-most nominations (4), Cee came away with no awards. Furthermore, the rapper has been making a huge name for himself over the last 18 months. This has included reaching the heights of a potential collab with Drake.

Furthermore, it’s already been a huge year for SZA in terms of award recognition. Alongside Phoebe Bridgers, she won the 2024 Grammy for best pop dup/group performance for their track “Ghost in the Machine”. The pair most notably won the award over Swift, who was nominated for her track “Karma”, which featured Ice Spice. “Holy sh-t THANK YOU @phoebe_bridgers!!!I F-CKING LOVE YOU B-TCH !! 🥹😩Thank you to @RecordingAcad!!!!!!! I’m so grateful 🥹🙏🏾 and thank you to every producer on this record especially rob and Carter 🥹🫡🫶🏾 love u gang . Lana Del Rey was nominated for her track “Candy Necklace” featuring Jon Batiste. Furthermore, Billie Eilish, who won for her song on the Barbie soundtrack, was nominated for her feature on Labrinth’s “Never Felt So Alone”.

Beyoncé Dons Black & White Balmain To Virtually Accept Her BRIT Awards: Video

There’s no one doing it quite like Beyoncé. Since making a triumphant return to the stage during her legendary performance in Dubai, the “Telephone” singer has continued to prove that her talent truly knows no bounds. Most recently, her hard work was recognized on Saturday (February 11) night at the BRIT Awards.

Beyonce speaks on stage via video message as she receives the award for International Artist of the Year during The BRIT Awards 2023 at The O2 Arena on February 11, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Dave J Hogan/Getty Images)

The Texas-born star didn’t make the flight overseas to accept her trophies in person. Instead, she gave a virtual speech to the crowd in London. As Daily Mail notes, Queen B won in two categories – International Artist of the Year and International Song of the Year for “BREAK MY SOUL.” Though she didn’t walk the event’s red carpet, she still made sure to dress up in designer duds before snapping a few photos for the ‘gram.

While thanking those who gave her the awards, Beyoncé said, “Thank you so much for this incredible recognition. I’d like to say thank you to all of my friends out there in Britain for your continuous support over the years.” Afterward, she reminded viewers that this is only the beginning of RENAISSANCE‘s three acts. “I’ll see y’all on tour,” the Destiny’s Child alum promised. “Thank you so much for this honour!”

In her IG photo dump, Bey proudly poses with one of her sleek new trophies. Looking as fashionable as ever, her black and white Balmain outfit perfectly hugs her curvy hips and behind. On the unique dresses’ arms, striped fur creates an unmissable air of luxury and fun.

The majority of headlines surrounding Beyoncé lately have been focusing on her undeniably successful RENAISSANCE album. The project had an impressive run at the Grammy Awards. Consequently, it led the singer to tie the record for most trophies granted to one artist. However, that’s not all people have been talking about.

During a chat with Art of Dialogue, Big Gipp shared his thoughts on Bey’s marriage to Jay-Z. During the interview, he specifically said that, if Tupac were still alive, the “Baby Boy” hitmaker would be with him instead of Hov. Read the Atlanta rapper’s full thoughts on the matter here, and check back later for more music news updates.

Little Simz Won Best New Artist And Dave Played A Flaming Guitar At The 2022 BRIT Awards

Last night’s BRIT Awards ceremony gave a whole new meaning to the term “playing with fire” as rap music won big and dominated the onstage performances with dynamic sets from Black artists like Dave and Little Simz (who, incidentally, are also alums of “the British version of The Wire,” Top Boy).

Dave, who won the Best Hip Hop/Rap/Grime Act award, also performed his song “In The Fire” from his 2021 second studio album We’re All Alone in This Together with fellow Grime standouts Giggs, Ghetts, Meekz, and Fredo. After completing his passionate verse, Dave revealed a surprising talent, donning an electric guitar to play a dazzling solo as flames shot out the end, a la Mad Max: Fury Road. Watch the performance above.

Another big winner was Little Simz, whose 2021 album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was widely considered one of the year’s best. Nominated for Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act, Simz won Best New Artist, bringing her mum onstage for an inspirational acceptance speech encouraging fans to chase their dreams and holding herself up as an example of the fruits of perseverance. She also played album standouts “Introvert” and “Woman” alongside actress Emma Corrin from The Crown. You can check her performance out below.

Doja Cat Cancels Her 2022 BRIT Awards Performance Over COVID Concerns

Doja Cat has canceled yet another performance over COVID concerns, this time her upcoming set at the 2022 BRIT Awards, where she’s nominated international artist of the year and best international song for “Kiss Me More,” featuring SZA. Doja announced the cancelation in a tweet, revealing that “numerous” members of her crew had tested positive for COVID-19.

“Unfortunately, due to cases of COVID within my crew, I will no longer be performing at the Brits,” she wrote. “My team and I have been in rehearsals for weeks and despite taking the utmost caution, numerous members of my crew (both on and offstage) have tested positive for COVID. It’s simply not safe for us to continue to rehearse together and put each other in harm’s way. I can’t wait to perform for my UK fans as soon as I can. Take care of yourselves.”

Before this, Doja Cat’s participation in the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball tour was also canceled after she tested positive herself. It was the second announced time she’d tested positive after contracting the bug in summer of 2020. Perhaps these cancelations could be a blessing in disguise, though, offering the blossoming star an opportunity for rest after expressing frustration with the pressures of her career. Hopefully, she’ll recover soon and be able to get back to doing what she loves, performing and making music.

The Weeknd And Oneohtrix Point Never Gave A Rainy Brit Awards Performance Of ‘Save Your Tears’

The 2021 Brit Awards were eventful, especially for The Weeknd, as he managed to pick up a win in his sole nomination, for International Male Solo Artist. Elsehwere during the broadcast, he also gave a performance of his latest No. 1 single, “Save Your Tears.”

Ariana Grande, whose appearance on the song’s newest version helped propel it to the top of the charts, did not join The Weeknd. Instead, he was accompanied by After Hours collaborator Oneohtrix Point Never (aka Daniel Lopatin), who joined him in a small half room, which was revealed to be in a stormy outdoor environment.

He also gave a pre-taped acceptance speech. Standing in the rain on the same set as his performance, he said, “Thank you, BRIT Awards! I wish I was there to accept the award. I want to shout out my UK fans for helping me break out into the world. If it wasn’t for you guys, I would not be standing here right now, so thank you, I love you. To my people in Ethiopia who are suffering: You are deep in my heart. For everyone watching, please help where you can. Thank you, bye.”
