Jay-Z Recruits Diddy, Lil Uzi Vert, Bobby Shmurda, And Others To Celebrate The 40/40 Club’s Anniversary

Later this month, Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club will celebrate its 18th anniversary. The venue is one the Roc Nation founder opened back in 2003 with Roc Nation Sports chief Juan Perez and Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez. In addition to being attached to the rapper, the 40/40 Club gained additional popularity thanks to multiple references in rap songs from the likes of Jay and more.

The venue flaunts itself as a space that combined “the lavish warmth of a New York City penthouse with the vivacity and glamour of court-side seats at a championship game,” as a press release reads.

In a little over a week, the 40/40 Club will commemorate its 18th anniversary with a celebratory event at the venue. The club reopened back in August after it was shut down in early 2013. Guests who received an invite to the celebration, which takes place on August 28 at 8 p.m., were gifted a special black and white hourglass that represents the time that went by between the club’s closing and reopening. Some of the names of the guest list include Diddy, Lil Uzi Vert, Bobby Shmurda, Rapsody, Remy Ma and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

The news comes after Jay-Z hired Tory Datcher, the former senior vice president and chief customer officer of Clorox, as the CEO of his Monogram cannabis company. This made Datcher the first Black CEO to lead a major public cannabis company in the United States.

Lil Uzi Vert is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Bobby Shmurda Opened Up About His Post-Prison Mindset: ‘I Feel Like Being Locked Up, It Made Me Smarter’

A few months after being released from prison, Bobby Shmurda has shared some new insight with The New York Times about what he learned from his time at New York’s Clinton Correctional Facility, saying, “I ain’t mad about going to jail, because my mind-state now versus my mind-state before — I probably would’ve been in jail for life before […] The stuff that’s going to get you in trouble or put you in that situation, you can see that from miles away.”

The Roc Nation rapper went to prison back in 2016 with a plea deal on conspiracy to commit murder and weapons possession charges. He was released back in February, but he’s been keeping super-busy, performing at Miami’s Rolling Loud and joining J Balvin and Daddy Yankee to remix Eladio Carrion’s “Tata.” In the coming weeks, he’ll also perform at Summer Jam in New York and the Made in America Festival in Philadelphia.

“When I was young, I used to run towards it,” he added in the interview about his mindset, pre-lockup. “I was a full animal. So I feel like being locked up, it made me smarter. It made me stronger. And it made me badder, but in a good way. Instead of saying, boom, ‘I want to go in the streets and cause hell,’ I’m saying, ‘I want to go in the streets and give back.’ I feel like that’s gangster.” (Indeed, over Father’s Day Weekend the Brooklyn rapper held a “Give Back Brunch” for 200 families, treating patrons of the Win Shelter in Brooklyn to a meal including Bobby’s own Jamaican favorites: curried chickpeas, jerk salmon, and stewed chicken. In addition, Bobby employed barbers to give free haircuts to the attendees.)

Shmurda also offered a glimpse into the new music he’s been working on with names like Swae Lee and Migos, saying, “We’re going to be dancing 24/7. When I dance, it’s to show you that I came through the struggle, but I overcame it and we’re still overcoming it.”

Bobby Shmurda Teams Up With J Balvin And Daddy Yankee To Remix Eladio Carrion’s ‘Tata’

One of the biggest moments in hip-hop this year arrived back in February with Bobby Shmurda’s release from prison. The rapper previously spent nearly seven years locked up on conspiracy to commit murder and weapons charges. Bobby was welcomed back to the world with open arms from people in and outside of hip-hop, and fans of his music couldn’t wait to hear what the rapper would drop after nearly a decade away from the scene. While he’s yet to give them a new single, the rapper’s first offering to the music world since his release comes in the form of a bilingual verse on a new remix.

Bobby joins J Balvin and Daddy Yankee to remix Eladio Carrion’s “Tata.” The rapper fits effortlessly with the trio as the song’s Latin trap beat suits him perfectly as they all contribute verses in both English and Spanish. The remix also comes with a gritty and flashy visual that captures the four artists flexing muscles in the streets and on the MTA buses before things come to a close with Daddy Yankee concluding the song as he peacefully lounges on a hammock.

The new remix arrives after Bobby returned to the stage at Miami’s Rolling Loud festival for one of his first performances since his release from prison. There he performed hits like “Hot N****” and “Computers” as well as unreleased tracks that left festival attendees extremely excited for what Bobby has in store for them.
