Nicki Minaj Accuses Billboard Of Threatening To Take Away “Pink Friday 2” Sales

Recently, Nicki Minaj took to X to announce that she’d be giving some of the Barbz an opportunity to select songs to appear on the deluxe edition of Pink Friday 2. Per the terms of the contest, she asked them to provide proof that they purchased all four versions of the album either digitally or on vinyl. She quickly let them know, however, that Billboard tried to put the kibosh on her contest, threatening to take away some of her album sales for requesting proof of purchase.

“Been discussing my 100 barbz contest for months,” she wrote. “They said billboard reached out to say they gon take away sales for me telling y’all about the 100 barbz thing. Can’t wait until these next 6 hours are up so I can tell y’all some sh*t. You can give out millions in cashapp money tho. Lol. So barbz, me asking you to show PROOF of something that was already DELIVERED OR PURCHASED IS AGAINST THE RULES. SO pls disregard. Apologies.”

Nicki Minaj Puts Billboard On Blast

Nicki went on to tell her fans not to buy or stream the album anymore, accusing Billboard and other companies of trying to “bring her down.” She noted how other artists have done similar contests with no consequences, and claims that they’re targeting her in particular. “They changed all those other rules specifically for me yet their own ‘ppl’ are the ones suffering from it & will CONTINUE to,” she said in a subsequent Tweet. “I don’t need any validation. Album is phenomenal & my fans as well as others love it. But they’re soooooooooo angry they couldn’t stop me.”

Regardless, it doesn’t look like Nicki’s letting the debacle get her down, as she went on to let everyone know she isn’t worried about sales. “Threatening me…like what? Huh?” she wrote. “You don’t scare me. Take away all the sales y’all want. I’ve never not ended up feeling sorry for my enemies. Read that line again. God is in control.” What do you think of Nicki Minaj calling out Billboard for allegedly threatening to take away Pink Friday 2 sales over her contest? Sexyy Red Opens Up On How “Rich Baby Daddy” Came To Be

Earlier this month, Sexyy Red dropped the deluxe version of her breakout album Hood Hottest Princess. The album was originally released earlier this year and served as her breakthrough moment. It dropped off the strength of “Pound Town 2” which featured Nicki Minaj and spawned even more hits like “SkeeYee” and “Hellcats SRTs.” The deluxe version added an entire 11 new songs which are stacked with big features. Chief Keef, 42 Dugg, G Herbo, Summer Walker, and Sukihana all appear on the new tracks from the deluxe edition.

Earlier this week Sexyy Red teamed up with Billboard to answer some fan questions on Threads. She discussed numerous tracks from her debut album and the deluxe edition. She also dove into some of the collaborations that resulted in those tracks. But Sexyy also had something to say about the making of one of her biggest songs to date “Rich Baby Daddy” with Drake and SZA. The song landed on Drake’s new album For All The Dogs and has already racked up more than 90 million streams. It’s also still hovering inside the top 30 of the Hot 100. When asked about how the track came together, Red kept it brief. “Me and Drake already was cool ever since he brought me on his tour. We talked about doing songs then he put SZA on it,” she explained. Check out all the questions she answered below.

Last week, Sexyy Red had an Instagram live that left fans particularly curious. In the live, she made references to the Illuminati and secret societies and claimed that she couldn’t get out of the music industry because she’s making too much money. While many think she was joking some took her at face value and tried to dissect what exactly she would be talking about.

The comments resulted in a few jokes made at Red’s expense by Nick Cannon on his podcast earlier this week. What do you think of Sexyy Red’s brief explanation of how she ended up on Drake’s song “Rich Baby Daddy?” Let us know in the comment section below.

Ice Spice Is Billboard’s Top New Hip-Hop/R&B Artist For 2023

Ice Spice is set to finish 2023 as Billboard’s #1 Year-End Top New R&B/Hip-Hop Artist, as caught by Chart Data. The feat comes after the outlet named her its R&B/hip-hop Rookie of the Year, back in August. Her charting success comes primarily from the release of her debut EP, Like..?, in July as well as several popular collaborations. In 2023, Spice’s “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” (with PinkPantheress), “Princess Diana” (with Nicki Minaj), “Karma” (with Taylor Swift), and “Barbie World” (with Minaj and Aqua), all reached the top 10 of the Hot 100.

As for her Rookie of the Year honors, she told Billboard: “I have put in so much hard work, and it means a lot to be recognized for it and have more than just plaques to show for it.” Despite her chart success and rookie honors, Ice Spice lost Top New Artist at the Billboard Music Awards, last weekend, to Zach Bryan. She also lost Top Rap Female Artist to Nicki Minaj.

What Is The Top Rap Song Of 2023 On ‘Billboard?’

With just a couple of days to go until Thanksgiving, Billboard has released its year-end charts (the music industry, much like all those turkeys, pretty much dies with the holidays, so it is usually best not to count the last month of the year, which Mariah Carey rules with an iron fist anyway). Those charts tabulate all the sales and streams up til the second week of November (including, last year’s December stats), then tell us what we’ve listened to the most collectively (like Spotify Wrapped but for the US as a whole).

While country music, pop, and the rap-R&B of SZA dominated as a whole, the top hip-hop track of the year (at No. 5 overall) was Metro Boomin’s take on a mid-2000s classic. “Creepin’” featuring The Weeknd and 21 Savage covers Mario Winans’ 2004 hit “I Don’t Wanna Know,” which itself sampled the Fugees’ 1996 song “Ready or Not,” which in turn sampled Enya’s 1987 song “Boadicea.” Released on January 27 as a single from Metro’s then-latest album Heroes & Villains “Creepin’” peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 on February 6. It currently has over 1 billion streams on Spotify and 86 million cumulative views on YouTube across its visualizer, official music video, and audio stream (not including the seemingly dozens of bootleg streams).

Of course, if you don’t want to count that as the “top rap song” of 2023 since it only features a rap verse from 21 Savage, the next qualifying track also includes 21 Savage. “Rich Flex,” from Drake and 21’s joint album Her Loss also ranked near the top of the year-end list, coming in at No. 14. Sorry, Pusha T stans and Drake haters (same difference, right?) — it doesn’t look like The Boy has lost his touch just yet.

Other top tracks include “All My Life” by Lil Durk feat. J. Cole, “Just Wanna Rock” by Lil Uzi Vert, and “Fukumean” by Gunna. Also, Ice Spice really did prove to be the reigning princess of rap, appearing no fewer than four times on the list — the most of any female rapper.

Drake Wins Five 2023 Billboard Music Awards

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards went down on Sunday (November 19), and had a lot of big winners. Taylor Swift and Morgan Gallen were among the most awarded musicians of the night, but what’s a top dog conversation without the 6 Dog- I mean, God? Moreover, Drake won a total of five BBMA trophies for the occasion, pointing to his excellent commercial run over the past few years. Specifically, these awards were Top Rap Album for his 21 S*vage collab Her Loss, Top Rap Song for the project’s opener “Rich Flex,” Top Rap Artist, Top Male Rap Artist, and Top Rap Touring Artist.

Furthermore, this caps off a pretty great 2023 for Drizzy, with the expanded version of his album For All The Dogs coming out just a few days ago as of writing this article. Sure, that promo cycle brought him his fair share of beefs, too. But what’s the industry without a little tussling, especially when you’re at such a high peak of success and polarization? Regardless, congrats to Drake on these awards, and we’re sure that this won’t be the end of his award show run in the next few months.

For example, the Recording Academy nominated him for various Grammy awards after re-entering the submission process. For those unaware, the Toronto superstar hadn’t submitted his work for consideration in a long time, and it’s unclear if this will affect his nominations for the 2024 ceremony in a negative or positive light. Whichever way the wind blows, he might spit a bar or two about it eventually, but we’re sure it won’t faze him too much. After all, Drake basks in constant acclaim; only something really special these days to either hype him up or tick him off.

Meanwhile, Scary Hours 3 is shaping up to sell very well based on first-week projections, so the success will surely keep on rolling in. Do you think that he deserves these dubs or is Billboard not a good enough metric to determine his value? However you may feel, let us know in the comments down below. Taylor Swift’s “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” Sees Biggest Billboard 200 Debut In Nearly 10 Years

Taylor Swift’s latest re-recording release, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), notched the biggest opening on the Billboard 200 in nearly a decade, this past week. It debuted at No. 1 after moving 1.653 million equivalent album units in the week ending on November 2. It’s the most since Adele’s 25 sold 3.482 million units in its first week back in 2015. The figure is even higher than the original version of 1989, which debuted with 1.287 million in its first week in November 2014.

While it’s the highest-selling album since 2015, it’s also the sixth highest-selling of all time in terms of traditional album sales, which make up 1.359 million of the aforementioned total sum. In addition to being behind Adele’s 25, it’s also behind NSYNC’s No Strings Attached (2.416 million), NSYNC’s Celebrity (1.878 million), Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP (1.76 million), and Backstreet Boys’ Black & Blue (1.591 million). Swift also has the most number-one albums for a female artist of all time with 13 different projects topping the chart. She’s tied with Drake for third place on the list of any artist regardless of gender. They’re behind only JAY-Z’s 14 and the Beatles’ 19.

Drake Sets This Billboard Milestone For Tour Sales In Hip-Hop

Drake’s unquestionably at the top of the game commercially, and has been for many years up until this point. However, just because he keeps setting records doesn’t mean his chances of breaking them get any slimmer. Moreover, the 6 God just set a new record as the highest-grossing touring rap act, according to Billboard, which means that he’s made more money off of tours than any other rapper throughout his career. Other metrics exist for the highest-grossing tours, individual shows, and more, and you can bet that he’s near the top of those lists, too. Yet, with over 3.9 million tickets sold and profits of approximately $473 million, the 37-year-old stands alone in all-time profits.

Furthermore, Drake’s latest milestone has a few interesting facts and curiosities to it. For example, he’s performed 304 shows for his tours, so this doesn’t count one-off performances, guest appearances, and things of that nature. Drizzy’s first tour show was on April 9, 2010 at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Philadelphia. That show grossed him and his team $191,000. For comparison, the OVO mogul’s 2019 show at the O2 Arena in London, England earned him and his crew a whopping $13.5 million.

For those curious, Jay-Z is the runner-up in this field, with about $431 million in profits from 402 shows across his career. Other names in this list include Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Eminem, J. Cole, Tyler, The Creator, Nicki Minaj, and more. Interestingly enough, some very popular but relatively smaller artists also made the cut that might surprise you, such as $UICIDEBOY$. There’s also The Black Eyed Peas, which most people don’t view as part of hip-hop as much these days.

Regardless of those technicalities, Aubrey Graham’s accomplishment is impressive. If you take a look at the numbers for his best-selling album, it’s no wonder that he continues this dominance in every commercial field possible. Let us know in the comments whether you think he’s going to fall off now… and get ready for him to beat expectations once again soon.
