Is it the end of an era? New England Patriots coach, leader, and icon Bill Belichick’s season is over after a disappointing 17-3 loss to the New York Jets, capping off a bad 4-13 season.

As Belichick strolled off the field, many wondered if it would be the last time he coached a team at Foxborough, which he addressed in the postgame.

“As far as the future goes, I’ll sit down with Robert, as I do every year at some point, at the end of the season and we’ll talk about things as we always do,” Belichick said. “But that’s really all I have to say about that right now because there isn’t anything else to talk about.”

He added, “It was a disappointing year for all of us — players, coaches, staff, the entire organization. Not anything that any of us are in any way content with, but it is what it is.”

Bill Belichick Says Balls Were Underinflated For Patriots-Chiefs

Bill Belichick has confirmed that the balls used for placekicking during Patriots-Chiefs last weekend were underinflated. “We don’t have anything to do with it. Were we aware of it? Yeah, definitely. As I understand it, they were all the same. I don’t know what the explanation is. It was the same for both teams. You’d have to talk to the league about what happened on that. That part of it, they control all that,” Belichick said during his weekly press conference. The news was first reported by MassLive but any parallel to the infamous Deflate-gate scandal were dismissed as the issue affected both teams.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who missed his first field goal of the season in the first half against the Patriots, said he was informed of the deflation at halftime. “[They told me] the balls were a little deflated [and] they just let me know they pumped [them] up,” Butker said. Furthermore, he didn’t blame his miss on the state of the ball. “I think it was technique, one of those misfires that you wish you had back. My second kick of pregame warmup, I had a 38-yarder middle, and it kind of sliced off to the right like that. So it showed up, kind of, in warmup. I made a lot of big kicks with flatter balls, and shoot, even in college, I kicked a lot of flat balls,” Butker added.

Chiefs Kicker Explains Deflated Ball Situation

Furthermore, Butker revealed that a kicker can tell the different between balls in various states of inflation. “I didn’t notice anything on that opening kickoff and then second half, once you make that [field goal], you have the kickoff and you can feel the ball. And it was noticeably more pumped up. But again, cold weather is going to make the inflation go down. I’ve even had games where the bladder of the ball might pop or something, and maybe you feel it on kickoff and then you just ask for a different ball. So stuff like that happens and you just roll with it. I’ve made decent kickoffs with balls that maybe aren’t perfect 13 PSI indoor room temperature, but it’s just kind of the nature of the game. Sometimes that stuff happens,” Butker explained.

Despite Butker also calling the process “routine”, the situation has called back memories of Deflate-gate. The Belichick-led Patriots were fined $1M, docked two draft picks, and lost QB Tom Brady for four games after it was determined that they purposefully underinflated balls to gain a competitive advantage in the 2015 AFC Championship Game.

According to some audio obtained by TMZ Sports, Bill Belichick spoke on the Greg Hill Show about the pairing. The Patriots head coach has attended a Swift concert before and he is a huge fan of hers. So much so, that he thinks Kelce will be making the biggest catch of his career. Belichick told the show’s hosts, “I would say Travis Kelce’s had a lot of big catches in his career. This would be the biggest.” It seems like it is heading towards something more serious as TMZ Sports also got a photo of them heading to dinner in Travis’ old-school convertible.

Bill Belichick famously does not appear in the Madden franchise. This is because EA’s licensing agreement for the likeness of coaches is with the National Football League Coaches Association. Belichick is not a member of the NFLCA and has not independently given his permission to EA to use his likeness. However, someone needs to coach the Patriots, especially if you the player aren’t going to. This has led the developer to create an annual stand-in for the veteran head coach. Previous versions have included Chad Masters, Griffin Murphy, and Josh Moore. Oftentimes, the in-game portrait of fake Belichick was modeled on EA VP Roy Harvey.

However, Madden 24, which will hit general release on August 18, features a new fake Belichick. Peter Gaffney is a balding man with a rough beard and glasses. He looks like the obsessive toy collector who lowkey kidnaps Woody in Toy Story 2. Meanwhile, SB Nation‘s list of 42 things that Gaffney looks like includes “He looks like he has a Twitter, but doesn’t have his name on it, and he comments under women’s sports posts with “not a real sport” and “Pete Gaffney owns a two-handed longsword and has been arrested for using it at his nephew’s 6th birthday party. The children were terrified.”

Social Media Rejoices At The Arrival Of Fake Belichick

What’s truly amazing about Fake Belichick is that EA has seemingly resolved to never make him look even vaguely like the real Bill Belichick. There is no Bill Belichick in the Madden universe, only Peter Gaffney. And of course, social media was absolutely here to welcome Peter Gaffney to the much-vaunted position of NFL head coach.

Of course, perhaps Gaffney is the spark the Patriots need this year. New England was 20th in passing yards, and 16th in total touchdowns last season. The Patriots have attempted to remedy this offensive malaise with the signings of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mike Gesicki. While they didn’t address offensive skill positions until the sixth round of the draft, it will be intriguing to see what Gaffney can do with this new look team as Mac Jones likely fights to keep his starting spot.

The 2023 NFL Draft set a record for the most number of trades in a single draft. However, among the flurry of first-round trades, the Patriots made a small but unusual swap. Initially drafting at #14, New England dropped back three places in a trade with the Steelers. The Steelers also sent a 2023 fourth-round pick to New England.

The Steelers took Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones with the 14th pick. The Patriots nabbed Oregon corner Christian Gonzalez with the 17th and Maryland kicker Chad Ryland in the fourth round. However, people thought that the Steelers got off lightly in terms of draft compensation to move up in the first. Turns out they did, simply because Bill Belichick hates the New York Jets.

Belichick Gave Steelers An Easy Trade To “Fuck The Jets”

The New York Jets went into the 2023 NFL Draft needing help protecting Aaron Rodgers. However, sitting at #15 with little draft capital, they could only watch as the top o-line prospects were drafted. However, as the clock on the Patriots’ #14 pick began, there were a handful of high-quality o-line prospects still on the board. The Pats could have taken an o-lineman here but Bill Belichick loves a cornerback. And then the Pats traded back three spots and the Steelers took an o-lineman. Turns out, Belichick literally did it to fuck over the Jets.

“They should have had to give up a [third-round pick] and not a four to move up there,” one NFL general manager said anonymously to The Washington Post. “Belichick did it just to fuck the Jets. He sold low because he knew the Steelers were going to take the kid the Jets wanted to take.” Belichick has a lot of history with the Jets, both within their organization and facing them as a division rival. Moreover, Belichick could have taken Jones himself, but to him, it was even funnier to watch the Jets lose out of their prospect of choice to someone else entirely. During this run, the Patriots have been led by one man. That man is head coach Bill Belichick. Belichick is known for his no-nonsense approach to the game. The “Patriot Way” is often how Belichick’s style of coaching is described by his current and former players.

One thing that has made the Patriots so successful during this period has been Belichick’s decision-making. Belichick isn’t afraid of making tough decisions. For instance, benching a Pro Bowl QB like Drew Bledsoe for an unproven backup in Tom Brady was a good call. Now it seems like Belichick could be looking for a change at QB again. Jones hasn’t been the player New England had hoped for when they drafted him in the first round back in 2021. However, the former Alabama QB has been a part of a tough rebuild with the Patriots. After Brady’s departure in 2020, the New England Patriots have yet to find their footing. The team hasn’t been to the playoffs since Brady took his talents to Tampa Bay. A franchise that is used to playing in deep January is now reconsidering just how to get there.

Jones may not be the answer in New England. However, the team doesn’t believe that former league MVP Lamar Jackson is either. The Patriots reportedly dropped out of the Jackson sweepstakes last week. The NFL Season is over for Bill Belichick, and fans wanted to know what the iconic coach will do next season. He won’t make fans hang on long, revealing he will return to the team in 2023.

The Pats lost to the Bills on Sunday 35-23, eliminating them from playoff contention. In response, Belichick laid out the plans for his next season.

“Nobody’s satisfied with that,” Belichick said to ESPN. “That’s not our goal. We need to improve on that. So that’s all of us — accountability everywhere, starting with me, the coaching staff, players, each unit. They are all things that we will address, and that process will start probably later today.”

Since the departure of Tom Brady, Belichick is 25-25 for a .500 record as head coach. He is now set to examine current quarterback Mac Jones as the quarterback of the future.

“I think Mac has the ability to play quarterback in this league,” Belichick said to ESPN. “We have to all work together to try to find the best way — as a football team, which obviously quarterback is an important position — to be more productive than we were this year.”
