The New England Patriots continue to clean house as ESPN reports the team intends to trade embattled quarterback Mac Jones. Pending a physical, Jones will head to the Jaguars for a sixth-round pick. In Jacksonville, he will compete to be the primary backup for fellow 2021 first-round pick Trevor Lawrence. The trade, which cannot be finalized until the new NFL year starts on Wednesday, ends a tumultuous three years in Foxboro for Jones. Despite making waves late in his college career at Alabama, many experts were surprised to see the Patriots take him 15th overall in 2021.

Jones threw for nearly 4000 yards in his rookie year before drastically declining. He failed to surpass 3000 yards in his sophomore season and was benched for Bailey Zappe after 11 games of the 2023 season. While Jones’ development was undoubtedly affected by the departure of Josh McDaniels, he also suffered from the Alabama Curse. Teams continue to seemingly overvalue Crimson Tide QBs, often putting undue pressure on players at the NFL level. Elsewhere, the New Orleans Saints have extended Tyrann Mathieu, giving Honey Badger two more years in the Big Easy. The contract, as mentioned, is for two years and totals $13M. In 2023, Mathieu had 75 tackles (50 solo) and four interceptions. This put him joint-fifth in tackles and joint-first in interceptions on a team that finished 9-8 on the season but missed out on the playoffs due to tiebreakers. Bill Belichick Says Balls Were Underinflated For Patriots-Chiefs

Bill Belichick has confirmed that the balls used for placekicking during Patriots-Chiefs last weekend were underinflated. “We don’t have anything to do with it. Were we aware of it? Yeah, definitely. As I understand it, they were all the same. I don’t know what the explanation is. It was the same for both teams. You’d have to talk to the league about what happened on that. That part of it, they control all that,” Belichick said during his weekly press conference. The news was first reported by MassLive but any parallel to the infamous Deflate-gate scandal were dismissed as the issue affected both teams.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who missed his first field goal of the season in the first half against the Patriots, said he was informed of the deflation at halftime. “[They told me] the balls were a little deflated [and] they just let me know they pumped [them] up,” Butker said. Furthermore, he didn’t blame his miss on the state of the ball. “I think it was technique, one of those misfires that you wish you had back. My second kick of pregame warmup, I had a 38-yarder middle, and it kind of sliced off to the right like that. So it showed up, kind of, in warmup. I made a lot of big kicks with flatter balls, and shoot, even in college, I kicked a lot of flat balls,” Butker added.

Furthermore, Butker revealed that a kicker can tell the different between balls in various states of inflation. “I didn’t notice anything on that opening kickoff and then second half, once you make that [field goal], you have the kickoff and you can feel the ball. And it was noticeably more pumped up. But again, cold weather is going to make the inflation go down. I’ve even had games where the bladder of the ball might pop or something, and maybe you feel it on kickoff and then you just ask for a different ball. So stuff like that happens and you just roll with it. I’ve made decent kickoffs with balls that maybe aren’t perfect 13 PSI indoor room temperature, but it’s just kind of the nature of the game. Sometimes that stuff happens,” Butker explained.

Despite Butker also calling the process “routine”, the situation has called back memories of Deflate-gate. The Belichick-led Patriots were fined $1M, docked two draft picks, and lost QB Tom Brady for four games after it was determined that they purposefully underinflated balls to gain a competitive advantage in the 2015 AFC Championship Game.

Patriots Fan Killed Following Altercation During Dolphins Game

Tragedy has hit the NFL world as a Patriots fan was killed on Sunday. During the Patriots’ game against the Miami Dolphins, a fan by the name of Dale Mooney was being taunted by Miami Dolphins fans. According to Yahoo! Sports, the man was from New Hampshire and had driven to the game to watch it go down with some friends. His wife says she received word that he was catching grief from the Dolphins fans who were in his section. Subsequently, he was punched in the head by a Dolphins fan and was knocked unconscious.

Fans in the section filmed the altercation and were confused when Mooney wouldn’t get up. Eventually, they realized he was not breathing and they called for medical intervention. Parademics administered CPR and eventually brought him to the hospital, where he was declared dead. A witness told Boston 25 News about what he saw at the game. As you can imagine, it was all a harrowing experience for those involved.

“It looked like people grabbing and pulling at each other at first at some point in the guy in the Dolphins jersey punched the victim twice in the face and that’s when the victim fell into his seat unconsciousness,” said Joey Kilmartin a witness. “The guy in the Dolphins jersey got hauled away by police and that’s when everybody noticed something was wrong a minute or so later the guy still hadn’t made any movement it really didn’t look like he was breathing.”

Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced ahead of the NFL schedule reveal that the first Patriots home game of the 2023 season will honor Tom Brady. “I invited him back to be with us at the opening game and let the fans in New England thank him … it will be the beginning of many celebrations to honor Tom Brady,” Kraft said.
