Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar & Royce Da 5’9″ Teamed Up On “100” Off Of “Detroit” 12 Years Ago Today: Stream

Big Sean’s brand new album Better Me Than You has us reminiscing on how far he’s come in his career. Moreover, 12 years ago today (September 5), he dropped his breakout mixtape Detroit on the Internet and re-released it on streaming services for its ten-year anniversary. While there are plenty of highlights to name here, there are multiple reasons as to why “100” featuring Kendrick Lamar and Royce Da 5’9″ is an easy standout.

For one, these introspective verses see each MC speak on their aspirations before their life is over, ripping through a dramatic and percussively stark instrumental. Also, this is a minor but still relevant chapter in the beef history between Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar, a tale that ended amicably. But it’s curious to hear this track back when you consider that it dropped a year before K.Dot would challenge Sean and many others on their “Control” collab. For obvious reasons, this reflection on that competitiveness is more relevant than ever these days.

Meanwhile, with a potential collab album with The Alchemist on the way, this throwback doesn’t take away from all we have to look forward to from Big Sean in the future. If you haven’t heard “100” with Kendrick Lamar and Royce Da 5’9″, find it on your preferred streaming service or check it out on YouTube below. Down there, you can also find some standout bars and the comments section for you to leave your thoughts on this retrospective look. As always, come back to HNHH for more recollections throughout hip-hop history.

Big Sean’s New Album Is Projected To Be Lowest-Selling Of His Career

Big Sean went through a lot to get his new album made. The rapper poured his blood, sweat and tears into Better Me Than You, and fans could tell. The album was packed with introspective songwriting and uplifting sounds. Unfortunately, the uplifting elements have not applied to album sales. Hip Hop By the Numbers released the projected first week sales for Better Me Than You, and they are not good. In fact, they will mark the lowest-selling first week of Big Sean’s entire career.

Big Sean’s latest album is projected to sell less than 24K in its first week. Statistically, these numbers will put him outside of the top 20 on the Billboard 200 charts. Still high, right? Well, not for Big Sean. Despite not being considered “Big Three” caliber, Sean has been a steady commercial force throughout his entire career. His first four albums all topped the hip hop charts, and his third album, Dark Sky Paradise (2015), managed to top the Billboard 200. To date, none of Sean’s studio albums have charted lower than three. Better Me Than You will be lucky to crack 20.

Big Sean Will Debut Outside Of Top 3 For The First Time

There are, of course, lots of variables at play here. Big Sean hasn’t released an album in four years. Said album, Detroit 2, was not the commercial success that its predecessors were. It was eventually certified Gold, but it lacked a hit single. Better Me Than You has the same problem with even more distance from Sean’s last hit. None of the three lead singles from the album charted on Billboard. Big Sean clearly had more of an album statement in mind, but it still stands to reason that a viral hit would have done a lot to boost his sales.

It’s also worth noting that rap albums have consistently underperformed in 2024. Unless your name is Travis Scott, you are struggling to sell records. Mustard way underperformed when he put out Faith of a Mustard Seed in July. He sold only 18K copies, despite having a stellar roster of guest stars and the after glow of a Kendrick Lamar-assisted number one. Mustard’s partner in crime, YG, fared even worse. Just Re’d Up 3 sold only 8K first week, which is massively down from the rapper usual Billboard numbers. It’s a rough patch that the genre hopefully gets out of.

Big Sean Suggests The Alchemist Collab Album Is In The Works

Big Sean may have just dropped his new album Better Me Than You, but he’s already thinking about the future. In fact, he has a lot more full-lengths where that came from, and he spoke briefly on them during a new Complex interview. Specifically, the Detroit rapper spoke at one point about the struggles of being a famous musician and how it can stress him out. While reflecting on these emotions, he revealed that one of his perceived weaknesses and difficulties is how he works on a lot of different things at a time. It’s here where fans got a hint about a full-on collab project with The Alchemist.

“I have been burnt out lately because I have chosen to take so much on by doing multiple music projects,” Big Sean told the outlet. “So what I mean by that is my album and then also cooking up with Alchemist too,” he said of the legendary producer behind his recent cut “Together Forever.” In addition, they also collaborated on Larry June’s “Palisades, CA,” and surely have more gems in the vault.

Also, Big Sean spoke on his current ideas for his TWENTY88 duo with his partner Jhené Aiko, as well as other loosies. He suggested that these two categories and others might end up on Better Me Than You or on a forthcoming project. “Conceptually, I got this song I did with KAYTRANADA called ‘My Life’ as the last song,” Sean stated. “That kind of concludes the album from a conceptual standpoint, and it’s basically more so saying it is the light at the end of the tunnel, and I wanted to end it like that.

“But then, after I had already turned it in and was releasing it, I was like, I kind of do want to go one more step further. Maybe even add an alternate ending, how they do with movies and stuff to the album,” Big Sean explained. “I’ve been looking at [the album] as a living, breathing being because I decided to put it out this week. I was going to keep holding onto it. I had a song with Nicki [Minaj] that I was working on. One of the TWENTY88 songs, I was like, ‘Oh, it kind of fits better on the album’. But it wasn’t all the way done yet.”

Big Sean Delivers His Most Mature Album Yet With “Better Me Than You”

The road to get here was long and difficult. Big Sean didn’t sugarcoat. He was honest with fans about all the personal turmoil and growth he had to go through to get the album recorded. It’s finally here. Better Me Than You is on streaming, and it’s excellent. The album really showcases Big Sean’s growth, and is a sonic manifestation of everything he’s been saying on social media during the rollout. He sounds like he is in a much healthier place than he was when he was younger. There’s still scores to settle, and rappers to rag on, but there’s an awareness that it’s not all that important at the end of the day.

The singles still sound pristine as ever. “Precision” is the best “banger” on the album, and that’s not a bad thing. Big Sean sounds hungry as ever over the soul sample made famous by Three 6 Mafia. He still has that elastic, endless energy in his voice. “Precision” doesn’t really reflect the rest of Better Me Than You, though. The bulk of the album is dedicated to soulful, mid-tempo cuts where Big Sean can take stock of his life. “Break the Cycle” flips a Gap Band interpolation into a self-help anthem courtesy of of Charlie Wilson. “Boundaries” is is a heartfelt airing out of issues over a snappy instrumental. In truth, the only song that feels truly out of place is the single “Yes.” It’s a reminder of what Big Sean sounded like when he was trying to strain for hits. He was smart to focus on quality bars and non-trendy sounds for the rest of what’s here.

Big Sean Reveals Meaning Behind Charts In New Album Promo

Big Sean included some mysterious graphs at the end of the recently released trailer for his new album. Now he’s explaining their significance. Sean is in album mode and wants to make sure that everyone has the same understanding ahead of its release.

The trailer for Better Me Than You, Sean’s upcoming album, came on July 18. He released the video a day after a version of his album was leaked online following his freestyle on the On The Radar show. The psychedelic clip was also a venue for Sean to preview an unreleased song. The trailer ended with four pie charts. Now, we have a better idea of what they’re meant to represent.

Big Sean Explains The Charts In His New Album Promo

“When I was making this album, I was going through I felt like the same four emotions, really,” Big Sean explains in the video. “And I remember I sat down and I drew this chart one day that just represented how I was feeling. I hand-drew it and I was like ‘man, I never really saw this chart before.’ I ended up getting it animated. And it’s four different charts that represent four different feelings, four different moods of the album, four different emotions that I was going through personally […] First of all, I was under a lot of pressure. But going through that pressure led to clarity. Which led to me being able to focus on happiness and living in that happiness briefly, and then going right back to the pressure. But I drew these graphs out and it really just brought the album to life for me.”

A version of Better Me Than You leaked after Big Sean dropped a freestyle on the On The Radar show. Sean’s verse reportedly takes aim at former boss Kanye West, after fans initially thought his words were for Kendrick Lamar. The person who leaked the album said he did it on Ye’s behalf. Sean took the leak as an opportunity to move up his album’s release date and start his rollout now. The album is now releasing on August 9, and he shared the lead single, “Yes” on July 19.

Big Sean Drops Official Release Date For New Album Despite Leak

Bad week for Big Sean. The rapper decided to address his haters on a new freestyle, and wound get getting his album leaked as a result. A Kanye West fan interpreted Sean’s bars as a diss towards his favorite artist, and leaked most of Big Sean’s new tracks out of spite. The rapper has taken the leaks in stride, though. A day after the unfortunate incident, Sean dropped an official trailer for his new album, titled Better Me Than You. Fans were treated to cool visuals, a snippet of a song, and finally, a proper release date.

The album trailer sees the camera zoom in on Big Sean’s eye, only to reveal a world of color and trippy shapes. The instrumental that accompanies these visuals is similarly colorful, though the rapper isn’t spitting over it. The album’s official title is confirmed by a neon sign that appears at the very end of the trailer. Better Me Than You had been thrown around as a possible title previously. That being said, the aforementioned leak was released under the name Feelings and Random Thots. It’s safe to say Sean chose the better title. The rapper confirmed the release on Twitter, writing: “album August 9th.”

Big Sean’s Better Me Than You Will Drop August 9th

Big Sean spoke at length about the difficulty he had recording Better Me Than You. It’s his first album in four years, and it coincided with his decision to stop drinking. “I’ve been having a hard f*cking time,” he told fans via Instagram Live. Been in [the studio] trying to finish this album. I’m tired of overthinking… I stopped drinking in 2022 ’cause that sh*t was f*cking me up.” Despite the struggles he’s had, Big Sean maintains that the new album contains some of his “best music” to date. “It’s so many different sides of me,” he told viewers. “[This album] really represents what the f*ck I’ve been going through for these past couple of years.”

The leak could not have been easy for the rapper to deal with. The person who leaked the album claimed that Kanye West urged him to do it, but there’s nothing to substantiate these claims. Despite this display of pettiness, Big Sean is keeping a positive outlook. The internet is on his side, with many believing that he’s due to win after being overshadowed by the likes of Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The rapper actually addressed the leaks on Twitter, taking a light-hearted approach. He teased his upcoming single with The Alchemist, and joked about rushing the rollout to avoid more leaks. “Might as well start droppin, before they leak it all, got damn [crying-laughing emoji].”

Big Sean Breaks Silence On Album Leak

Big Sean just can’t catch a break these days, as his recent On The Radar freestyle elicited people’s ire rather than their impressed thoughts on his rapping. Moreover, you probably already heard that a self-proclaimed Kanye West fan, who claimed that he acted on Ye’s orders, recently and allegedly leaked Sean’s entire new album online. “Since he wanna disrespect Ye so much, here’s the album, f**k him and his whole team,” the supposed leaker shared. “Ye told me to leak it.” Even though this could’ve definitely struck a chord with the Detroit rapper, it seems like he took this all in stride and capitalized on the opportunity to preview a new collab with The Alchemist.

“Might as well start droppin, before they leak it all, got damn [crying-laughing emoji]. BIG SEAN x THE ALCHEMIST soon,” he wrote on Twitter in reaction to all this commotion. The minute-long Uncle Al collab snippet in question sounds quite heavenly, and we’re very excited to hear what they’ve got cooking up. Regardless, folks aren’t happy about this leak at all, whether they are huge fans themselves or just feel bad for an artist going through this.

Big Sean Brushes Off Album Leak

Of course, this all stems from Big Sean’s alleged Kanye West disses on his On The Radar freestyle. “I had to switch the home team ’cause they committed treason,” he raps at one point on the track. “N***as looking for engagement like they got their knee bent / I got better things to do than to find someone to beef with… Man, this industry is terrible, I can’t even vouch / I’ve seen grown men get matching tattoos for the clout.

Meanwhile, if you’re curious about this alleged leak itself, it seems like it’s not all that and that Big Sean will probably have a much different final product, so it might not be worth checking out. “It’s CLEAR this album isn’t finished yet (many open verses, him tryna figure out his flow and cadence on a track) and was not ready for people to hear,” one fan posited on social media. “It’s a high quality bad leak, it’s not even fair to review it.”

Big Sean Drops Off “Anderson Estate Freestyle” Ahead Of New Album

Big Sean is a rapper who has always caught some flack for his “punnier” bars. However, he has never shied away from just being himself. In fact, in recent years, one could argue that Sean has ditched those puns and has been a bit more serious with his writing. Overall, fans have enjoyed this change quite a bit. His most recent albums have been lauded as the best of his career, and he continues to showcase his talents. He has been teasing a new album which should be released later this year, and fans have every reason to be excited, moving forward.

On Wednesday, Big Sean was able to surprise fans with a new freestyle called “Anderson Estate.” This freestyle was done over a new version of J Dilla’s “Drop” beat for The Pharcyde. Ultimately, this was a huge comeback freestyle for Sean, who showcased just how hungry he is. There are even some bars that reference Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar. “I think where I lack most as an artist is consistency/ I just haven’t had the energy to compete with enemies,” he raps. “Or y’all so-called bigger three/ But every verse I lay, fans love to say, ‘Man, n****s is sleep!’” When it comes to best rapper alive conversation, Big Sean is oftentimes left out, and he wants to change that narrative.
