Apple Music’s Innovations Are Making It The Go-To Streaming Service For Music’s Most Discerning Fans

As streaming services adjust to the perils of capitalism – grow at all costs, acquire subscribers at all costs, return profits for shareholders at all costs – the media that keeps these entities profitable becomes less valued. Spotify’s mission seems to be a dominance in audio in the most general sense possible, which has only highlighted the work of its rival, Apple, which has seemingly put premium focus on creating a user-listener experience that rewards devoted fans of music. Sure, Apple Podcasts exist, and at the end of the day, Tim Cook’s sole responsibility is to keep Apple as the world-beating behemoth that it is, but the emergence of two recent incentives from the digital music pioneer has situated Apple Music as the go-to service for people who want to listen to their favorite music and discover new artists. With the arrival of Apple Music Classical and Dolby Atmos, Apple Music is drawing a line in the sand that its main initiative is to attract as many music devotees as possible. It is a powerful statement in the face of its chief rival continually getting dogged in the press for its low payouts (it’s not like Apple streams will make the average musician rich, though). Apple seems to have found an opportunity to exploit the mistakes of its competitor and built a number of apps and features that make it a truly desirable home for music fanatics.

I first began growing intrigued by Apple’s pivot towards music devotees when they introduced Dolby Atmos — also known as Spatial Audio — to wide audiences. After all, there might not be a marketing and audio initiative more antithetical to modern music consumption than the only draw being “this music sounds better.” It seemed remarkably backward-thinking from a company that was always ahead of the curve. Sure, the technology is phenomenal and fascinating, but music has become clipped, shortened, and commodified as more and more discover music via apps like TikTok and popular playlists across the major streaming platforms. While the measure of Spatial has been dictated by statistics an Apple representative has given me, it’s clear they’re making a push for it to be the go-to way for audiences to consume music on the app. According to a representative, “Since launch, the number of monthly Spatial Audio listeners has more than tripled, with more than 80% of worldwide subscribers enjoying the experience, while monthly plays in Spatial Audio have grown by over 1,000 percent. Currently, 79% of the Global Daily Top 100 are available in Spatial.”

As you can see, these statistics can mean a number of things — Apple doesn’t clarify how many of those subscribers actively seek out the experience; and almost 80% of songs being available in Spatial has more to do with their progress on the development end than the success of the program. After all, the songs are also available not in Spatial. Apple’s commitment to higher fidelity audio is an initiative with little financial gain for the company. It comes free with certain iOS updates. Between the advancement of Apple’s Spatial technology and its newest initiative, Apple Music Classical, it has become clear that Apple’s desire to dominate the music audio landscape is a boon to audiophiles everywhere.

Apple Music Classical is another free app for subscribers to Apple Music, which is remarkable considering the work it took to get the app up and running. Because of the number of recordings, versions, orchestras, and variations that accompany each piece of classical music, the SEO required for the app itself is much different than modern music. To learn more about the development of the software, I spoke with Veronica Neo, who founded Primephonic, whose mission was to “bring classical music into the digital age.” Now, with Apple’s team supporting her vision, the dream has finally become a reality. Neo, who is now head of data and operations management at Apple, explained the initiative and desire to get Apple Music Classical up and running. “We started our data process at the source, and then we did endless iterations to ensure that the catalog information we were receiving matched our classical repertoire database as much and as accurately as possible. As we discovered new works in recordings, we added these to our ever-growing classical repertoire database.”

This was a time-consuming, expensive initiative, and it’s hard to imagine Apple Music would dive into such an operation if there was little financial gain for this wing of Apple. While Atmos feels like more of a pet project, it appears as if Apple Music may have found a market inefficiency. Perhaps they’re looking to accrue a number of new subscribers who never before utilized digital streaming services. Regardless, Neo sees the app as useful for classical novices and experts alike. Much like Apple Music, the service offers tons of information and recommendations from editors.

Being a classical music novice myself, I found the app easy to navigate and informative. I am not opposed to learning more about the genre, and Apple Music Classical made the subject matter engaging. For someone curious, it’s a more than suitable introduction to the genre. “For beginners, there is a broad variety of playlists, for instance essentials per period or per genre. Browsing by instruments is a unique feature that is available on Apple Music Classical that allows listeners who know the sound of an instrument they love to get started and create their own classical music taste profile as they explore,” she explains. We also have works descriptions for many classical works that provide a much more enriching listening experience as they learn about the story of the composition.” These works descriptions are what I found so enticing, which illuminated the context and tradition around these monumental compositions.

Aficionados, too, will find the app appealing according to Neo, and I bet this is where Apple sees dollar signs. The amount of classical lovers who listen to digital music has to be minuscule, based on how long it took Apple to accumulate the proper SEO keywords to populate their catalog. It was simply a bad listening experience before the app came along. “More advanced listeners can easily go beyond the usual suspects through Composer Undiscovered Playlists and Hidden Gems. Lifelong fans can search by composer, work name, opus number, album name, artist name, or even in their local language, and find exactly their favorite recording instantly,” Neo says. “We also have Related Composers and Related Works that bring recommendations beyond what they already know.”

This is the future of Apple Music, which may not be the first name associated with streaming but has positioned itself as the music listener’s service. Its new initiatives and technological innovations are antithetical to the click and move on factory-like behavior that playlisting and algorithmic listening fosters. It’s a bold bet, and I’m not certain Apple will have patience if these programs lose money or fail to attract wide swaths of the market, but as a music devotee and someone constantly looking for a less insane way to consume music, both Spatial Audio and Apple Music Classical make it clear that I’m not the only one searching for alternatives.

Lola Brooke Addresses Dating In The Music Industry

Lola Brooke recently expressed her feelings about dating within the music industry, hinting that she’d be okay with romance with another entertainer. The rapper discussed her opinion on the topic during an interview with Latto on her show, 777 Radio, on Apple Music 1.

“If the vibe is right and my feelings are secure, yeah,” Brooke answered when asked about it. When questioned if she’d still prefer a “nine to five” partner, she replied, “I don’t mind doing that but when I really think about reality, it’ll be like, ‘Will he start fighting with my accomplishments? Will he be insecure?’”

Elsewhere in the interview, Brooke reflected on her hometown of Brooklyn. “Brooklyn is the best because no matter where you go in the world, if you’re from the Bronx or Queens or whatever, you’re going to say, ‘I’m from New York.’ But a Brooklyn person is going to say, ‘I’m from Brooklyn,’” Lola Brooke explained to Latto. “We’re not going to say we’re from New York, we’re going to say we’re from Brooklyn. That’s just how it is. I don’t know. Shout out to the greats: Jay-Z and Biggie.”

Brooke recently starred as the face of the 50th anniversary of the Original Timberland Boot campaign. She also opened for fellow New Yorker, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, on his Me Vs Myself international tour. Brooke blew up in on the hip-hop scene over the last two years following the release of her single, “Don’t Play with It.” A year after its original 2021 release, the song reached new heights in popularity due to its explosion on Twitter and TikTok. The song eventually made its way onto the US Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at 69. Just last month, Brooke teamed up with Latto and Yung Miami for a remix of the track. The music video has reached over 4 million views on YouTube in the time since.

[WATCH] Chlöe Bailey Addresses Rumors Of Dating Quavo On Latto’s “777 Radio”

Screen Shot 2023 03 30 at 11.39.20 PM

After being spotted at the same Miami hotel last year, Migos rapper Quavo and Chloe Bailey have been rumored to be an item, but Bailey refuted the speculation while speaking to Latto on her new Apple “777 Radio” podcast.

Latto asked Chlöe, “The tea was that you was talking to Quavo,” and Chlöe replied, “Uh oh, well, we’re doing a movie together.” Chlöe is referring to the Praise This movie, which just released a promo trailer.

Latto was persistent with her questioning, asking if their relationship was strictly business to which Bailey replied, ,“Yes, working. He’s a really nice guy. Yeah, he’s nice… I like his locs.”

See interview clip below.

Chloe just recently revealed in an interview with Big Boy that she still is in contact with Gunna, who was released from Fulton County Jail after taking an Alford Plea in the YSL RICO case.

Latto Announces Apple Music Show “777 Radio”

Latto uses Twitter as her main outlet to debunk false stories and address rumors on the Internet but now, she’ll have a new radio show that fans could look forward to. The Atlanta star continues to rise the ranks of the entertainment world, though she’s evidently pivoting towards broadcast. This morning, she took to Instagram where she announced 777 Radio on Apple Music. Latto’s upcoming show will make its debut on Thursday at 11 a.m. PT with special guest Chlöe Bailey, who drops her debut solo album In Pieces on Friday.

The announcement came alongside a short trailer that Apple Music debuted on its social media page. Latto takes on the role of a flight attendant (and passengers) as she announces the arrival of 777 Radio. “Welcome aboard 777 Air,” she says. “Make sure to put the BS on airplane mode and leave all your baggage at home ‘cause we goin’ outside, baby.” The launch of 777 Radio could be a sign that she has a new album coming soon, so hopefully, she’ll debut some new heat this Thursday.

Latto Takes Over The Airwaves

Unfortunately for Latto, everything she does creates some sort of backlash. Just after her apparent back-and-forth with Ice Spice, many fans seemingly felt as though the “Big Energy” was taking cues from Nicki Minaj, who launched Queen Radio on Apple Music. Of course, the comparisons to Nicki began to lead the Latto hate train on Twitter on the heels of their beef. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how Latto’s personality translates onto the radio waves. Perhaps, this might open up more doors down the line, similar to Trina’s transition to radio.

In the midst of divisive opinions, Apple Music’s Karlie Hustle shared revealed that she worked closely with Latto over the past year to bring the show to life. “I’ve been working with Latto and her team on developing this radio show for nearly a year! What a privilege it has been. Such a gracious, friendly, hands-on consummate professional! Comes in prepped and ready. Notices all the details. The moment that mic is hot, she’s on fire,” Hustle’s tweet read. Check out the trailer above and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Latto Announces Her Apple Music Radio Show With A High-Flying Video Teaser And Fans’ Feelings Are Varied

After absolutely dominating 2022 with her Mariah Carey-sampling dance hit “Big Energy,” Latto looks to expand her burgeoning empire in 2023. Her latest move (which looks… familiar) is partnering with Apple Music Radio for her own show, 777 Radio. Latto announced the show’s impending debut with a slick video trailer depicting her as a flight attendant giving an announcement. “Welcome aboard 777 Air,” she says. “Make sure to put the BS on airplane mode and leave all your baggage at home.”

The similarity of concepts between Latto’s show — which has been in development for a year, according to one contributor’s tweet — and another former Apple Music production quickly caught fans’ eyes, leading to a flurry of comments comparing and contrasting the two (if anything, it might explain the roots of their conflict given the timeline). Meanwhile, some others attributed Latto’s flight attendant look to Saweetie’s “Closer” video with HER (which, if those fans were being honest, they kinda let flop. Funny to get angry about it now, especially after they cooked Saweetie for doing the same alleged thing to Rico Nasty just like two years ago).

Still, other fans noted that Lil Kim preceded many of her successors into the radio space, trying to short-circuit the inevitable stan war brewing on the horizon. It didn’t work — when have stans ever been convinced by piddling things like facts? — but you have to appreciate the effort.

The first episode of 777 Radio will debut Thursday, March 30 at 11 AM PT on Apple Music with guest Chloe Bailey — another frequent target of controversy from Stan Twitter. Tune in.

One Of The World’s Biggest Artists Said No To Spotify And Apple Music (But Is All In On Amazon) And Explained Why

Garth Brooks is one of the most successful musicians of all time. He has the most diamond-certified albums ever with nine (The Beatles are in second with six). His Garth Brooks World Tour that concluded in 2017 sold 6.3 million tickets, the most ever for a North American tour. He’s also the best-selling solo artist in history when it comes to RIAA certifications. If you want to stream his music, though, you’re out of luck if you use Spotify, Apple Music, or any other platform besides Amazon Music.

In 2016, he signed an exclusive deal with Amazon to bring his music to streaming. Now, he has elaborated on what he saw in Amazon that he didn’t in other services.

As Digital Music News reports, at the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville yesterday (March 13), Brooks said that it has to do with Amazon’s ability to sell physical releases of albums and how that benefits songwriters like himself:

“The fact is that Amazon is a retailer as well. So you can sign your streaming deal, but part of that streaming deal is to move those physical units so the songwriters get paid. And people, we can talk all day that ‘Garth went on to raise his kids, what a great…’ — Garth did that for himself. I stick up for the songwriters because I’m freakin’ one of them! Everything I do for the songwriters, I do for myself.

I’m the most selfish guy you’ve ever met, OK? But if we don’t take care of these songwriters, what do you guys have to play? It’s just tough, so that’s why I love partnering with [Amazon]. So the physical comes in, and nobody’s doing physical anymore. So these songwriters are still doing well.

And I hope that songwriters want to get a Garth Brooks cut. One, because I hope that they think that it would be cool. But two, right behind it closely, I hope it’s because they know that if you’re a Garth Brooks songwriter, you’re going to get paid.”

Given Brooks’ popularity, other platforms have tried to lure him. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek once even had a meeting with Brooks to try to get him on board. In 2017, Brooks said of Spotify and Apple Music:

“Spotify came in, Daniel Ek came down to sit with me, sweet man, I love Daniel, great guy. I think he gets a lot of crap. His parents were both street musicians — he’s a good guy who understands music, and I think he wants to help and believes 100 percent he’s helping.

Apple’s a little different story. They came in with their own set of rules, and if you’re already established, you have to change to get to them. I’m never going to change to fit their rules. Nice guys, we have respect for each other, we’re just never going to work together. So we were kind of dead in the water. Then out of the blue, thank God, Amazon shows up and wants to get into the streaming business. The views they shared seemed to correlate with the views we shared.”

Apple’s Hip-Hop 50 Illustrator Black Power Barbie Discusses Rap Nostalgia Animations

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, sparking international celebration among fans of the genre. Influential organizations have contributed to commemorating the New York City-born musical style, including Showtime’s HIP HOP 50 series and NPR’s 50 Years of Hip Hop podcast. Apple also joined in the festivities and commissioned Amika Cooper (known professionally as Black Power Barbie) to create animations for their digital storefront. The tech company displayed the completed project in their App Store during Black History Month.

Born in the Big Apple but raised in Toronto, Cooper currently resides in Brooklyn. In an interview with Complex Canada, the illustrator discussed how her connection to the city inspired her project for Apple. “When I’m working on my personal projects,” she explained, “during that process you start to think about the person, the world they live in, and I think that’s what helps you understand what they’re about.” The artist added, “that’s another part of my style that became important to me, trying to create a nostalgic feel so that when people see something, they can recognize the time and place surrounding that character.”

Black Power Barbie’s Tribute To Hip Hop Reflects On Its NYC Roots

Cooper also describes her research process for the animation, including gaining knowledge about the history of the genre, and its widespread influences on the culture. “Just living in Brooklyn, I knew New York had to be a big part of it,” she explains. “I walk past history every day. Then you get the fashion, like wearing Adidas shell toes and bamboo earrings.” The artist notes how we often forget how the genre is rooted in the 70s, saying, “people forget that it didn’t really start with Biggie.”

Just last week, Cooper proudly took to Instagram to share her completed project, which commemorates many stages of the development of hip-hop. Playing alongside Black Star’s 1998 track “Definition,” the animation itself boasts vibrant colors and distinguishable characters. It swiftly roles through the genre’s vinyl past to digital present. Although Cooper notes the time-consuming hard work she contributed to the project, it’s evident that the final result is a thoughtful ode to the genre.
