Doechii Drops New Mixtape 'Alligator Bites Never Heal'

Rising star Doechii has released her highly anticipated hip-hop/rap mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, today via Top Dawg Entertainment/Capitol Records. This 19-track project captures Doechii in her rawest form, offering listeners a unique glimpse into her multifaceted artistry. To celebrate the mixtape’s release, she will host a livestream performance tonight at 6:00 PM PT, followed by a live show at Black Market Flea in Los Angeles tomorrow, August 31.

“To my Swamp, my devoted core fans, I hope you cherish this mixtape and create beautiful memories to it. Use my music to encourage you through the rough days and use it to imagine better ones. Allow Alligator Bites Never Heal to inspire you as you all have inspired me. I love you forever.”

– Doechii

On Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii fuses her Tampa roots with her current Los Angeles vibe, presenting an eclectic mix of genres, movements, and eras, all condensed into less than an hour of music. The mixtape’s cover art features Doechii as a regal figure in Vivienne Westwood, with beads in her braids and an albino alligator in her lap—a powerful image that demands attention.

The mixtape follows her Eurodance-inspired hit “Alter Ego,” praised by R&B superstar SZA as “the craziest song I’ve heard all year,” and its remix featuring JT. With over 15 million streams on Spotify, “Alter Ego” adds to Doechii’s momentum, along with her recent releases “MPH” and “ROCKET.”

Doechii Shares “BOOM BAP” One Week Ahead Of Her Upcoming Mixtape

It’s a shame that Doechii doesn’t get as much press as some of the other ladies in hip-hop. She might put the blinders on when it comes to that, but we know that she’s a true superstar in the making. It might have to do with the fact that she just doesn’t have as much material as some of her competitors. Heck, even her past EP-like projects have no more than 9 songs on them. However, that is all going to come to an end soon. Next Friday, August 30, the feisty Florida femcee will be sharing a new mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. To promote the project, Doechii is dropping off a new single from it, “BOOM BAP”.

Like previous promo cuts, “BOOM BAP” is another release under Doechii’s Swamp Session series on YouTube. Past inclusions are “BULLFROG”, “CATFISH”, and “NISSAN ALTIMA”. The release date was announced about a week and a half ago and Doechii is looking forward to showing audiences a different side of Florida hip-hop. “I wanted to take my audience to the swamp. Not a lot of people see that very country Florida environment like that… So, I wanted to take them out of the city and show them a country aesthetic”.

A slice of that “aesthetic” is “BOOM BAP”. It’s a well-executed, multi-faceted track that sees Doechii go from “real rap” to a bouncier, house-like vibe about halfway through. This song is essentially a middle finger to those who think she can only create aggressive rap tracks. It’s done to perfection and its building our anticipation for next week.

“BOOM BAP” – Doechii

Quotable Lyrics:

They want real rap from a b**** like they out-rappin’ a b****
Yeah, she can clap a lil’ bit, do that, they ain’t sayin’ s***
That a** a magnet, I get it, you know, attractive and s***
I just can’t sing a lil’ bit? I mean, that s*** was a hit
You know exactly what it is, the choir gon’ sing what it is
Top one hundred, what it is? Numero uno, what it is?

Doechii’s Freewheeling ‘Boom Bap’ Pokes Fun At The Reputation Of Her Label

Don’t push play on Doechii‘s new single “Boom Bap” expecting its content to match its title. Instead of employing a Pete Rock-esque, jazz-and-breakbeat-sampling instrumental and spitting cerebral battle raps full of witty double entendres, the Florida native instead lampoons such expectations with a jokey, largely improvised vocal performance, scatting and freestyling her way through repeated chants of the title. It’s a wink at the reputation of her label, Top Dawg Entertainment, which for the past decade was largely defined by its roster of heady rappers like Ab-Soul, Isaiah Rashad, and Kendrick Lamar, as well as production that favored ’90s-era styles.

Doechii, however, has done things differently since her first-ever single for the label, “Persuasive,” which employed house production and set her apart from her labelmates in some important ways (she’s also the only woman rapper signed to the label, although SZA’s pen skills have been praised as being very rapper-like). She returned to that style on recent single “Alter Ego” with JT of City Girls, putting her in conflict with Azealia Banks, but further establishing that she’s willing to do things her own way.

“Boom Bap” is due to appear on Doechii’s debut TDE mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, which is due on August 30. You can find more information here.

Doechii Reveals The Country Life-Inspired ‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’ Tracklist

Now that Doechii has revealed the title and release date of her upcoming full-length project, Alligator Bites Never Heal, she’s followed up with the countrified tracklist. The Florida native’s debut mixtape features 19 tracks with titles such as “Boiled Peanuts” and “Fireflies,” while there’s only one listed feature: Atlanta rapper Kuntfetish. You can see the tracklist below.

Previously released songs “Bullfrog,” “Catfish,” and “Nissan Altima,” all appear on the tracklist, while “Alter Ego” with JT, “Florida Wata,” and “Sunday’s Best” do not (whether this means an extended version featuring these songs is also in the works remains to be seen). The Top Dawg Entertainment rapper also hasn’t had too many songs featuring her TDE cohorts — other than SZA, who appeared on her debut single for the label, “Persuasive,” and Isaiah Rashad, who featured her on his songs “Wat U Sed” — so perhaps those are being saved for a future project, as well.

So far, the singles released from Alligator Bites Never Heal have been a departure from the house-inspired cuts that had become her signature. Now that she’s branching out, it seems that her haters will have to find something else to nitpick.

Alligator Bites Never Heal is due on 8/30 via Top Dawg Entertainment. You can find more information here. See below for the tracklist.

Doechii’s Upcoming ‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’ Mixtape Will Be Her Full-Length TDE Debut

Three years after making her Top Dawg Entertainment debut alongside Isiah Rashad on “Wat U Sed,” Tampa rapper Doechii has announced the release date for her first full-length project with the label, the fittingly titled, Alligator Bites Never Heal. She’s been releasing her “Swamp Sessions” videos for the past month, dropping “Bullfrog,” “Catfish,” “Nissan Altima,” “Florida Wata,” and “Sunday’s Best” on her YouTube leading up to the announcement, and on August 30, we’ll see how the full project fits together. Doechii also returned to Twitter (never calling it “X” — Elon doesn’t even do that), giving short explanations of each of the new songs.

In addition to the Swamp Sessions, Doechii teamed up with fellow Florida native JT on “Alter Ego” and released the nostalgic video for “Rocket in conjunction with Sprite’s Limelight series. While fans may think that the gap between Doechii’s introductory EP she/her/black b*tch and her first full-length project has been too long, Top Dawg Entertainment has never rushed perfection, allowing artists like Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah Rashad, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and SZA to take five years or more between albums — a bet that seemingly pays off every time. It’s good to see they trusted the same process with the outspoken Doechii; August 30 can’t get here soon enough.
