Chaka Khan Apologizes For Shading Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Adele & More

Chaka Khan is an unlikely person to kick off a flood of reactions following her interviews, yet here we are. The legend has been intimately woven into music history, and her contributions to the culture are unmatched. However, Chaka Khan’s soundbites have caused an uproar in recent years. She went viral—twice—over comments made about Kanye West. She admitted to hating his “Through the Fire” sample for his classic hit “Through the Wire.” More recently, Khan shared scathing opinions about Adele, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige. For the latter controversy, she returns with an apology.

“Recently, I was asked about a list of the ‘greatest singers of all time‘ and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait,” Khan says in a statement shared to Instagram. “As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes’, ‘categories’ or on ‘lists.’ Being an artist or musician is not a competition. It’s a gift, for which I am truly grateful.”

Chaka Khan Says She Didn’t Mean To Offend

“It was not my intention to cause pain or upset anyone. To anyone that felt this way, I sincerely apologize,” she continued. “Thank you for all the love everyone has shown me, unconditionally. I have always been about empowering others and I started a foundation for that very purpose. I will be announcing soon. Empowering all artists is most important because we truly are the architects of change…and change begins within the heart. I love you all and God bless.”

The apology has caused a divide. Khan’s supporters don’t believe she needed to explain herself to anyone. Yet, those who found her remarks to be offensive have taken to social media with pushback because they didn’t think the icon took accountability. During the controversial interview, Khan had this to say about Blige’s cover of her classic, “Sweetest Thing”: “I told Mary J. Blige she f*cked it up,” Chaka Khan said.

Khan’s Hot Take About Mary J.

She added, “Number one, her vocals were flat. And I asked her, I said, ‘What time of day was it or night, what were you doing when you decided to cover ‘Sweet Thing’? And where were you at when you covered it?’” Khan claimed Blige told her she was up late, until 8:00 a.m. “I said, ‘Girl, you don’t sing nothing at eight in the motherf*cking morning. Especially if you have to get up to sing it.’” Check out Chaka Khan’s post above.

Chaka Khan Apologized After Harsh Criticisms Of Adele, Mariah Carey, And Other Singers: ‘I Took The Bait’

Chaka Khan found herself at the forefront of the music news cycle last week after appearing on an episode of the Los Angeles Magazine Presents: The Originals podcast. On the show, she was asked about Rolling Stone‘s recent list of the all-time best singers, and she threw shade at vocalists like Mariah Carey and Adele.

Now, Khan has explained herself.

In an Instagram post shared last night (March 5), Khan broke down what happened and offered an apology, writing:

“Recently, I was asked about a list of the ‘greatest singers of all time’ and instead of questioning the need for such a list, I was pitted against other artists and I took the bait.

As artists, we are unfairly put into ‘boxes’, ‘categories’ or on ‘lists.’ Being an artist or musician is not a competition. It’s a gift, for which I am truly grateful.

Chaka Khan Says Mary J. Blige “Messed Up” Her Song + Accuses Mariah Carey Of “Payola” And Praises Beyoncé

Chaka Khan Mary J. Blige

In an interview with The Breakfast Club, iconic singer and songwriter, Chaka Khan, detailed how Mary J. Blige ruined her song with flat vocals. She also accused Mariah Carey of using payola and noted that Beyoncé had the makings of a great singer. In an interview with The Breakfast Club on March 2, Grammy Award-winning […]

Chaka Khan Disses Mariah Carey, Adele, Mary J. Blige

If you want an honest opinion on just about anything, ask Chaka Khan. The singer is one of the most celebrated voices in Soul, Funk, and R&B. She is hailed as one of the greatest voices of her generation and beyond, and Khan is respected among her peers. She holds nearly every coveted music award in her lane, and dozens of successful artists and musicians credit her as an inspiration. However, in recent years, it isn’t just Chaka Khan’s music that has earned attention.

She’s a powerhouse in the studio and her interviews. While many artists often take the politically correct route, the acclaimed singer usually dishes out opinions that give the public pause. This happened again when Khan visited Los Angeles Magazine‘s The Originals Podcast, where she was asked about her fellow singers. She discussed Mary J. Blige’s cover of her hit “Sweetest Thing,” and it was clear Chaka wasn’t a fan.

Chaka Khan Told Mary She Messed Up The Song

“I told Mary J. Blige she f*cked it up,” Chaka Khan said. “Number one, her vocals were flat. Especially if you have to get up to sing it.’”

“If you’d been up all night, smoking crack or something, I don’t know,” she added. “It might have been a whole different thing. But you don’t get up at eight in the morning to sing, girl. But she and I have that kind of relationship. We can talk. I love her. She loves me. We don’t have a problem. Now the press would love to making it a motherf*cking problem.”

Mariah Carey & Adele Catch Strays

If that wasn’t controversial enough, Rolling Stone’s 200 Best Singers Of All Time list was also a topic of conversation. Chaka Khan, who made No. 29. shared her ire with not only the choices but where they were placed. “These b*tches are blind as a motherf*cking bat! They need hearing aids. They don’t have hearing aids? They have no eyes. They have no ears. These babies, you know what? These must be the children of Helen Keller!’”

After suggesting “payola” was the culprit, Khan avoided commenting on one singer in particular. When it came to Beyoncé, she didn’t want any smoke. Check it out above.

Chaka Khan Went Full Scorched Earth As She Railed Against The Singing Of Adele, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey And More

Rolling Stone really knows how to get the people going. Before publishing a widely reported, scathing scoop on the alleged dysfunction on the set of The Weeknd and Sam Levinson’s forthcoming HBO series, The Idol, there was the “200 Greatest Singers Of All Time” list, which drove Celine Dion fans to politely protest her exclusion outside of the magazine’s New York office.

Chaka Khan disputed the list for a different reason, and she wasn’t polite about it. The 10-time Grammy winner joined the latest episode of Los Angeles Magazine Presents: The Originals podcast with Andrew Goldman. At the end of the hour-long conversation, Khan said she hadn’t read the list — “I don’t read” — so Goldman filled her in by reading the blurb Rolling Stone wrote about her. Khan is ranked 29th.

“Just listening to that, if I didn’t know Chaka Khan, I would say, ‘Ooh, that earns at least a five. Maybe a 10, at the least,” she said. Khan agreed with Aretha Franklin topping the list (“As she f*cking should be! Thank you! There’s justice somewhere”) and Whitney Houston at No. 2 but belted her criticism of Mariah Carey’s fifth-place ranking with the oomph of “I’m Every Woman.”

“That must be payola or some sh*t like that,” Khan said of Carey’s positioning. She also declined to comment on Beyoncé at No. 8 before commenting on Beyoncé at No. 8: “I don’t have anything to say about Beyoncé. She’s a great singer. She really has [the] opportunity to be a great singer. She has what it takes. She got the chops. She does.”

Carey wasn’t the only one to upset Khan, as Adele, Christina Aguilera — “Whatever, a lot of Black people like Christina Aguilera. She’s alright” — and Mary J. Blige caught strays.

“I quit,” Khan said after Goldman revealed Adele ranked 22nd. And that was nothing compared to her reaction to Mary J.’s spot ahead of her at No. 25.

“You know what? That’s why I feel the way I do,” Khan said. “These are some blind bat b*tches. These b*tches are blind as a motherf*cking bat! They need hearing aids. They don’t have hearing aids. They have no eyes. They have no ears. You know what? These must be the children of Helen Keller.”

Whew. You’d think Khan was left off the list like Dion.

Adele & Rich Paul Engagement Rumours Fly After Singer’s Seen Wearing Diamond Ring: Report

Since making a bold return with her 30 album in 2021, Adele has been spending plenty of time in the spotlight. Though she won’t be touring around the nation as many other artists do in the wake of releasing a project, she did earn a prestigious Las Vegas residency where fans have been able to watch her perform. As you may recall, the initial kickoff to the series of concerts was rough, with the English vocalist revealing that production delays and the COVID-19 pandemic were to blame for her decision to postpone her shows.

While she clearly had reasons for moving her scheduled dates, at the time, many speculated the real reason for all the drama had to do with Adele’s relationship. Sources claimed that the mother of one and Paul were going through a rough patch and that she spent most of her time in rehearsal crying. Despite last year’s tragic situation, though, the couple appears to be happier than ever as of late.

Adele’s Wild Road to Residency

Last January, Adele faced her fears head-on and explained her residency dilemma in an emotional Instagram video. “I’m gutted — I’m sorry it’s so last minute,” she said through tears. “We’ve been awake for over 30 hours trying to figure it out and we’ve run out of time. I’m so upset and I’m really embarrassed and so sorry to everyone that travelled to get [to the show]. I’m really, really sorry.”

In February 2022, the “Chasing Pavements” artist shut down gossip about feuding with her man on Twitter while announcing a huge TV sitdown with Graham Norton. “Oh, and Rich sends his love,” she cheekily added at the end of the message, making it clear her relationship was in a rock-solid place. Weeks later, engagement rumours ran rampant as Adele went to the annual BRIT Awards with an unmissable diamond ring on her finger.

Past rumours about Paul’s alleged proposal may not have been true, but according to gossip blog DeuxMoi, the pair may have actually taken their relationship to the next level recently. “Per my very reliable sources, I can confirm that yes, Adele and Rich Paul are planning a summer wedding!” they wrote on their Story on Sunday (February 27).

As DailyMail reports, the news comes after the blonde beauty was seen wearing a huge diamond ring, once again, at her concert earlier this weekend. It seems to be the same one from last year’s BRITs, though we’re still waiting for confirmation from the lovers themselves. Over the past few months, we’ve seen the foreign artist and her beau stepping out together frequently, from their date night at the Grammys to the Super Bowl in Arizona. Adele & Ed Sheeran Both Say “No” To King Charles III

Adele and Ed Sheeran are two of the most important musical figures in modern music in the United Kingdom. Adele, born in the Tottenham region of London, is coming off a massive year. In Nov. 2021, she ended her six-year album drought with her studio album 30. Celebrated all throughout 2022, 30 was a huge triumph for Adele, who had experienced major changes in her life since 2015’s 25. Additionally, she was honored on music’s biggest stage for this album. At the Grammy awards in early February, she won Best Pop Solo Performance for 30‘s lead single “Easy on Me.”

As for Ed Sheeran, he too put out an LP in late 2021. The star from Halifax, a town in England, released his fourth official studio album = in Oct. 2021. Then, throughout 2022, he did a bit of genre-hopping for some eye-opening collaborations. In April 2022 he released his single “2step” which featured rapper Lil Baby. Then in July 2022, he landed on Afrobeat icon Burna Boy’s album Love, Damini for the song “For My Hand.” That same month, he linked with rapper-producer Russ for his single “Are You Entertained.” Now, Ed Sheeran is embarking on his U.S. “+-=÷x Tour” with recent collaborator Russ, as well as Khalid and others.

Along with Adele and Sheeran making tons of noise in 2022, their home country was going through a bit of a rough stretch. After King Philip passed away in early 2021, his wife Queen Elizabeth II met the same fate the next year. Elizabeth trivially passed away at age 96 in Sept. 2022. This left the throne empty and in need of a successor. Thankfully, Elizabeth and Philip’s eldest son Charles III was able to assume the throne. Now 74, King Charles is currently looking for performers for his official coronation ceremony on May 6. The ceremony will be followed by a festival on May 7, but it will unfortunately not feature two of Britain’s finest musicians. On Saturday (Feb. 18), OK! reported that both Adele and Ed Sheeran will forgo the opportunity to honor King Charles’ crowning.

In the case of Adele, she declined the invitation without further comment. According to sources provided by OK!, this was not welcomed news for the royal family. “The King has suggested a number of people he would like to perform, and Adele and Ed were on that list. He was very keen that they were part of the concert,” sources said. “There is a team set up to get the talent signed up, so they approached the two of them, but got replies saying that they were unavailable, which was a massive disappointment. They are titans of the showbiz industry and are quintessentially British, but also known across the globe. It’s such a shame.”

Lizzo Finally Spilled About How She And Adele Got ‘Lit’ Together With ‘Two Flasks’ At The Grammys

Lizzo is still on cloud nine over her Grammy win. Last Sunday (February 5), the hitmaker took home the Grammy Award for Record Of The Year for her hit single, “About Damn Time.”

Today (February 10), she appeared on The Graham Norton Show to discuss the events that went down when the cameras weren’t rolling. As one can expect, waiting to hear if you won an award can be anxiety-inducing. Luckily, Lizzo had just the fix to calm her nerves.

During Lizzo’s appearance on the show, Norton pointed out a jewelry-studded flask at Lizzo’s table in a picture taken at the awards ceremony.

“I had two flasks for me, and one for Adele,” she revealed. “It was lit.”

Norton then asked, “Why did you have to bring a hit flask?”

Lizzo replied, saying, “Because there’s not, like, a bar. I’m like, ‘Come on, y’all, we need more alcohol.’ It’s Grammys night, we’re all stressed.”

Shania Twain, who also appeared on Norton alongside Lizzo, and was seated at the same table as Lizzo during the Grammys, complimented Lizzo’s “shiny” and “bedazzled” flask.

The Rock Went To ‘Great Lengths’ To Keep His Surprise Appearance At The Grammys For Adele A Secret

It’s not often that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson isn’t the most famous person in the room, but that was the case on Sunday during the 2023 Grammys. Attendees includes Beyoncé, Taylor Swift (who worked with the wrestler-turned-actor for her “The Man” music video), Bad Bunny, and Adele. “Someone that I’ve never met that I think I would actually cry is The Rock,” the “Easy on Me” singer once admitted. Her wish came true at the Grammys, providing one of the night’s more delightful moments.

Johnson told Variety how he pulled off the surprise.

“We wanted to do something special for Adele,” he said. “I know that she is a very big fan of mine and has made that clear publicly many times. But I’ve got to tell you, I am a huge fan of hers, as well — her music, her journey, her openness and directness in how she speaks. I’ve always admired that about her.” The Rock went to “great lengths to make sure that Adele was authentically surprised in the moment, and she was.” He also called Adele “a special iconic brilliant inspiring artist who has inspired a generation and who will continue to inspire generations to come. I love that woman.”

If she slips a bottle of Teremana into her next music video, he’ll love her even more.
