Jordan Ward & 6LACK Shine On A Tender & Nostalgic New Single, “MUSTARD”

Jordan Ward is one of the most exciting voices coming up across any genre, although to call him on the come-up sounds unfitting. After all, following cosigns from the likes of Tyler, The Creator and this new collab single with 6LACK, the 28-year-old is quickly establishing himself as a bright voice with star potential. Moreover, this new track “MUSTARD” highlights Ward’s penchant for sincere and subtle songwriting filled with detail on closer inspection. It’s an acoustic guitar-led cut with dry but warm percussion that’s a perfect soundtrack for a day around the park. Lyrically, though, it centers around rebirth and change, making for a sweetly melancholy song with a lot of emotive weight behind it.

What’s more is that the vocal embellishments throughout, like background vocals and ad-libs, add a lot of atmosphere to “MUSTARD.” Jordan Ward sings with a slightly pitched-up voice that fits its reflections on the past quite well, while 6LACK keeps his signature soulful drawl. However, even though the track might sound simple at first, a few elements reveal the fleshed-out structure beneath. For example, wavy and low-toned synthesizers close the track out, and more effect-heavy guitar chords accentuate the chorus. Overall, it’s all held together by a sticky and distinct vocal melody for the chorus that makes for one of the catchiest and most tender ones you’ll hear all week.

Quotable Lyrics
Fall to the ground, it’s a rebirth, phoenix, I mean it
It was offset, now the scene is the greenest
Fruits of my labor just needed some sun
Grounded myself but I wanted to run

6LACK Partners w/ AI App Endel To Promote Mental Health & Better Sleep

One of music's most cherished and innovative musicians, 6LACK, today releases his highly anticipated album Since I Have A Lover on LVRN/Interscope Records after spending nearly five years primarily out of the spotlight.

Nowadays, it seems like there are endless artists releasing new music daily. Fortunately, some are more impactful than others.

Insert 6LACK recently partnered with the Endel app to release his newest album titled Since I Have A Lover. The unique body of work is a sleep soundscape project available on all major streaming platforms.

While 6LACK is best known for his feel-good, romantic R&B ballads, he’s also a huge mental health advocate and has always put his best foot forward. In creating Since I Have A Lover, 6LACK aims to promote self-love and healing, which audiences worldwide could use more of.

To drive the point even further, 6LACK has partnered with Endel, an app that utilizes its proprietary and scientifically validated AI technology rooted in extensive neuroscience research to reimagine his album as two functional, scientifically engineered soundscapes. The goal is help people focus better and sleep soundly.

Speaking on the collaboration, 6LACK states, “This is about letting people experience my music in a new way. These sounds can be for rest and relaxation or for helping you feel inspired and creative. It’s for finding a sense of balance in life. Since I Have a Lover has plenty of magical sounds, and combined with Endel’s AI and science, it was easy to create something that felt healing.”

The initial release will be a “SIHAL (Endel Sleep Soundscape)” soundscape, arriving on July 8th. 6LACK will also host a special live pre-listening session on the Endel app just two days prior. Endel is also collaborating with an Los Angeles-based company called Reflections to host two in-person listening sessions in both Los Angeles and Berlin, also on July 6th.

The second release is called “SIHAL (Endel Lo-fi Soundscape),” reimagining the album as a soundscape to help listeners focus — whether it’s for work, study, or to inspire creativity simply. This will be released on July 24th.

6lack Wants To Put You To Sleep With An AI-Generated ‘Since I Have A Lover’ Soundscape

“It’s always beautiful to see musicians continuously find new ways to bring their artistry to life with each project they release,” Uproxx’s Wongo Okon wrote about 6lack’s March album, Since I Have A Lover. 6lack took that personally, as he teamed with the Berlin-based AI sound wellness company Endel to create a new function for Since I Have A Lover that nobody saw coming.

Last week, 6lack took to Instagram to tease his and Endel’s collaborative “Sounds For Slowing Down” series, including “an ethereal listening experience of my new sleep soundscape” on Thursday, July 6, and Friday, July 7. The sessions will be hosted in-person in Berlin and Los Angeles, as well as within the app.

Per press release, two soundscapes were created from Since I Have A Lover using “scientifically validated AI technology rooted in extensive neuroscience research” with the intent “to help people sleep and focus better.”

“This is about letting people experience my music in a new way,” 6lack said in a statement. “These sounds can be for rest and relaxation, or for helping you feel inspired and creative. It’s for finding a sense of balance in life. Since I Have A Lover has plenty of magical sounds, and combined with Endel’s AI and science, it was easy to create something that felt healing.”

“SIHAL (Endel Sleep Soundscape)” and “SIHAL (Endel Lo-fi Soundscape)” will release on all streaming platforms on July 8 and July 24, respectively. The partnership is described as an extension of 6lack’s mental health advocacy, purposefully occurring during BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month.

These soundscapes could come in handy for 6lack during his upcoming Since I Have A Lover Tour, beginning this October.

SZA Admitted That She ‘Punked Out’ Of Sending In Her ‘Calling My Phone’ Verse To Lil Tjay And 6LACK

This past week, an early version of Lil Tjay and 6LACK‘s “Calling My Phone” surfaced online. This version featured a verse by SZA, which was ultimately left off of the final version.

Until yesterday (June 9), it was unclear why SZA’s verse didn’t end up on the official release. The “Kill Bill” hitmaker took to Twitter to explain the she actually didn’t turn in her verse.

“I’m mad y’all leaked it .. but glad y’all liked it,” she said. “I punked out of turning it in … happens a lot actually. I be feeling like I can’t add anything to songs that are already fire. Respect to @liltjay + @6LACK.”

Fans responded to SZA, urging her to let go of her nerves and to have more confidence in her craft. Though, SZA indicated that adding to a song of that caliber makes for a lot of pressure.

“It’s more a respect thing to the artist,” she said. “I literally only wanna give the best of me especially if the song is already popular. If I can’t magnify it I fall back.”

6LACK caught wind of the leak, however, he jokingly suggested that he couldn’t listen to it.

“ngl i listened with my hands over my ears cz it felt like a sin,” he said. “sound like butter tho.”

SZA then sent a message of reassurance to 6LACK and Tjay, letting them know, “y’all ATE.”

SZA Says She “Punked Out” Of Her Collab With Lil Tjay

SZA is one of the most talented and praised artists in the R&B genre. However, even she appears to struggle with self-doubt. Recently, a leaked song snippet revealed that she had recorded a verse for the crossover track “Calling My Phone” by Lil Tjay and 6LACK. Surprisingly, SZA never sent the recorded verse to her potential collaborators. She says that she “punked out.” After the snippet went public, the songstress expressed mixed feelings about the leak. According to her, she was hesitant to submit the verse because she often feels unable to add anything significant to already great songs. She emphasized her respect for the artists involved in the track.

SZA made it clear that it isn’t exactly about her feeling like she has a lack of ability. In response to a fan’s encouragement for her to have more confidence, SZA explained that she aims to give her best. However, when a song is already popular, she sometimes feels unable to enhance it. As such, she holds back. 6LACK reacted positively to SZA’s leaked verse, describing it as smooth. In return, SZA thanked him for his support. Lil Tjay, upon learning about SZA’s confession, hinted at sending her another song for collaboration. It seems there could still be a potential future collaboration between the two artists.

SZA Succeeds Just Fine On Her Own

Although SZA chose not to participate in the collaboration opportunity, she made her own power move last year. She released her critically acclaimed album, with SOS. Despite being only her second studio album, it became one of the most prominent releases of 2022. As such, it solidified her position as a leading figure in the music industry. The success of her first two albums have pretty much guaranteed that SZA will be a staple in the music scene for quite some time.

In a recent interview on the Rap Radar Podcast, TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson spoke about SZA’s unseen skills. He mentioned that she has a collection of material that showcases her rap skills. He also noted that she is handling fame much better now compared to her earlier Ctrl era. That era took place five years ago. However, it seems that there has been immense personal growth and a stronger connection between her artistic persona and her true self on SZA’s part. What do you think of the leaked verse? Let us know in the comments!

6lack Gives Wale His Flowers

6lack is one of the most talented artists in modern music. He first hit the music scene in 2016 with his debut album Free 6lack. That project included his breakout single “Prblms.” His second album, East Atlanta Love Letter, peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200 in 2018. Originally hailing from Baltimore before moving to Atlanta at a young age, 6lack has managed to carve out quite a career for himself. Now the rapper and singer is paying homage to fellow DMV icon, Wale.

During an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, 6lack discussed several topics, including music, mental health, and self-care. But when the subject came to DC native Wale, 6lack made sure to show the “Bag of Money” artist some love. “Flowers, man. Flowers for him all day long,” he said. 6lack went on to credit Wale and fellow industry veterans, Drake and J Cole, for paving the way for the current crop of talent. “As of right now, the current day, that era is Drake. That era is Kendrick [Lamar], that era is Wale, that era is [J. Cole],” he said.

6lack Credits Wale with Inspiring Newer Artists

Furthermore, the artist credits Wale for being an inspiration while he was still discovering himself as an artist. “during times where I was still figuring out myself and figuring out my music …his words spoke to me.” he said. The pair have worked together before. 6lack appeared on Wale’s 2019 song “Expectations.” The DMV natives collaborate again on 6lack’s third Album Since I have a Lover, which he released late last month. 6lack says pitching the project to Wale was an honor. “It was an honor to be able to reach out to him and just say, ‘I need you for something.’”

Other featured guests on the album include Don Toliver and 6lack’s real-life girlfriend Quin. The 20-track project is by far the most ambitious of 6lack’s career. After taking a nearly five-year break since his last full-length album, some wondered if he still had it. But if the initial reaction from fans is any indication, the multitalented performer is likely here to stay. Moreover, given his talent and personality, it is almost certain that the 30-year-old is inspiring a new wave of young artists the same way Wale inspired him.
