Will Smith Is A Huge Fan Of Donald Glover’s BET Awards Joke About Him And Sam Smith, His Reaction Shows

In case you missed it, Donald Glover made waves at the 2024 BET Awards this weekend when he took the stage to lament his lack of historical success at the awards. He joked, “It doesn’t really make sense: I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which makes no sense, but I have the same amount of BET Awards as Sam Smith. Does that make sense to you guys? Me and Sam Smith are neck-in-neck at the Black Entertainment Television…”

Will Smith, it turns out, is a fan of the bit.

On Instagram yesterday (July 1), Smith shared a video of himself in what looks like a hair and makeup room, watching the aforementioned part of Glover’s speech on a TV. He laughed after he was mentioned, then let out a bigger laugh at the Sam Smith punchline.

Glover was up for Best Actor at this weekend’s show, ultimately coming up short as the honor went to Denzel Washington. Glover was also part of the massive Usher tribute performance, opening the multi-artist medley by singing Usher’s “U Don’t Have To Call.”

Will Smith didn’t have any nominations, but he was on hand to give a performance of a very Kanye West-like new song.

Usher Finally Speaks On Controversial BET Awards Tribute

Usher had a massive day at the 2024 BET Awards over the weekend (Sunady, June 30), taking the stage to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award. However, everything surrounding him at the ceremony faced some scrutiny, including audio issues during his speech and the performance tribute to him. Folks thought that the female-led and near-17-minute-long homage from Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Chlöe, Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monét, and Latto could’ve included other male singers, while others thought that it accurately represented the Atlanta-based superstar’s influence and the state of R&B today.

Regardless of any backlash, Usher sent some very appreciative social media messages to his fans, to BET, and to his tribute’s performers, so it looks like he’s just grateful for the ride. “Reflecting on the incredible evening and mannn let me just say how grateful I am to @bet @betawards for the lifetime achievement award [prayer hands emoji],” he posted to his Instagram Story recently. “But I want to take a moment and give a very, very special thank U to these tremendously talented entertainers that graced the stage during my tribute. y’all did the DAMN thing!!! It was so amazing to witness each of your talents through the eyes of my own journey… thank U [heart emoji].”

“My tribute was amazing mannn…” Usher also added via Twitter about the BET Awards performance. “thank U to each and every one involved in the making of this moment [prayer hands emoji].” Meanwhile, here’s what BET had to say to him as an apology for his speech’s audio issues. “Celebrating global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and having him accept his award with a heartfelt speech was an honor,” a spokesperson relayed. “Due to an audio malfunction during the live telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted. We extend our sincere apologies to Usher as we couldn’t be more grateful for his participation in culture’s biggest night. Fans can catch his full uninterrupted speech across BET platforms and tonight’s encore on BET.”

We’ve got to be willing to forgive,” Usher said during the acceptance speech. “We’ve got to be willing to be open. I’m telling you, you’re standing before a man who had to forgive a man who never showed up, ever. And look what I made with it. Look what I was able to ‘usher’ in. But that’s what’s real. That’s what makes us human. That’s what makes us women and men.”

BET Apologizes To Usher For An ‘Audio Malfunction’ During His Heavily Censored Lifetime Achievement Award Speech

Usher won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 BET Awards on Sunday, but his speech was so heavily edited that viewers watching at home weren’t able to make out what the “Confessions Part II” singer was saying. BET has since apologized for what a spokesperson called an “audio malfunction.”

“Celebrating global icon Usher on our stage with a star-studded tribute and having him accept his award with a heartfelt speech was an honor,” the spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

As for the contents of his roughly 13-minute speech, Usher talked a lot about forgiveness.

“We’ve got to be willing to forgive. We’ve got to be willing to be open,” he said. “I’m telling you, you’re standing before a man who had to forgive a man who never showed up ever. And look what I made with it. Look what I was able to ‘usher’ in. But that’s what’s real. That’s what makes us human. That’s what makes us women and men.” Let’s see if he forgives BET.

Lauryn Hill Brings Out Her Son YG Marley & Wyclef Jean For Captivating Performance At The BET Awards

With a stacked performers list like the 2024 BET Awards had last night (June 30), there were bound to be some special moments. The current stars were mostly holding down the fort this year, especially the ladies. GloRilla, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, Ice Spice, Muni Long, and Sexyy Red are just a few to name. However, you can argue that Lauryn Hill is still that big ticket performer after her showing at the BET Awards. The iconic multi-talent of the 90s is still going strong decades after her solo and group success with the Fugees, as she still frequents live performances.

In fact, Lauryn Hill will be going back on tour later this summer in August. It is to continue the celebration of The Miseducation and The Score and there will be 21 dates to be had. After two cancelations, Lauryn, Fugees, and the fans will finally be able to relive those legendary works live. It feels like her BET appearance is going to be a taster for what is to come down the line.

If that is the case, then everyone is in for a major treat. Hill opened things up by playing the title track to her solo 1998 classic album, before jumping into “Lost Ones”. Then, after a seemingly off-the-cuff and blistering rapping performance about out social issues, her son and grandson of Bob Marley, YG Marley, joined the frey. He played two of his most popular records, “Survival” and “Praise Jah In The Moonlight”, showcasing just how much of a star he is. Finally, Wyclef Jean, popped out toward the end to reunite with Lauryn for a rendition of “Fu-Gee-La”.

What are your thoughts on Lauryn Hill, YG Marley, Wyclef Jean’s performance at the 2024 BET Awards? Where does this performance rank amongst the rest at the show and why? Who had the best outing out of the trio? Do you think the Fugees or Lauryn will drop a new album this year? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Gunna Approached By Man At BET Awards & Gets Called A “Rat”: Watch

Gunna cannot seem to shake the “rat” allegations after a random man confronted him at the 2024 BET Awards. It was a short but bizarre interaction, as the One of Wun rapper was chatting with two female staff workers on the red carpet before the festivities began. The man walked up to the Atlanta native and said, “Gunna Wunna man, you can’t be in the city doin’ all that ratting and s*** (expletive). Rat a** n****”. As he walked away, one of the ladies shouted “What?!” and proceeded to go after him. However, Gunna stood still and watched as his trash talker scurried away not saying a word.

Instead, he stared daggers into him, and fans were siding with Gunna online. “Then he walked away like a coward cause he got scared of gunna”, one X user said. Another added, “Bro ran off so fast after he said it😅”. Unfortunately, this will most likely not be the last time the hitmaker gets pestered for his alleged actions keeping Young Thug in court during the YSL RICO case. All in all, it was an extremely corny and coward-like maneuver by the guy. Surprisingly, though, this is not the first time he has done something like this.

Gunna Gives His “Rat” Trash Talker The Death Stare

According to HipHopDX the dude goes by K Rich and went viral as well for his recorded interaction with Jay-Z. It was in regard to the dinner or the $500,000 questions that was running rampant online. Rich went up to Hov and said, ““I’m taking that $500,000. I ain’t taking that dinner, I’m taking that $500,000”. All Jay could do is give him a fist bump and tell him “be good, man”. As for Gunna, this might be the moment he remembers the most, and that is even with the three nominations he received at the BETs.

What are your thoughts on this man at the BET Awards calling Gunna a rat? Do you think people will ever let the rapper move past these allegations, why or why not? Are you still in this guy’s camp that the rapper did this? On a scale of 1-10 how corny was this? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Latto & Ice Spice Smack Talk Each Other As Their Beef Continues At The BET Awards

Latto and Ice Spice are two of the most impactful female hip-hop artists right now. You could even make the argument for overall, especially this year. Both have turned in hit after hit, and they are nearing the releases of their highly-anticipated projects in the ensuing months. For Ice Spice, she will finally be delivering her debut album Y2K! on July 26th. Then, there is the self-proclaimed Queen of da Souf’s record Sugar Honey Iced Tea. Each album looks to do run up the streams and sales when they hit the market, and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

That is partially because these two leading ladies are still butting heads. Each femcee has taken their respective shots via social media and the booth over these last several months. That animosity was on further display during the 2024 BET Awards last night (June 30), as Latto and Ice Spice were dragging each other for their performances. They both showcased their respective disses, “Think U The S*** (Fart)” and “Sunday Service”, in addition to some other cuts.

However, it seems Latto and Ice Spice were locked into those two songs in particular. Following the latter’s time onstage, the Atlanta-based artist claimed that she is in indeed a “fart” and the “stankiest” one at that. The New York native followed up with a retort on X (formerly Twitter) dispelling Latto’s statement. “U NOT EVEN THE FART B!TCH🧡now gimmie my 10ss”.

What are your thoughts on Latto making fun of Ice Spice’s performance at the BET Awards? If these two get into a diss track battle, who do you have winning? Who do you think had the better showing onstage? Additionally, who has been having the better year so far and who will at the end? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. What Did Usher Say In His BET Awards Speech?

If you watched last night’s BET Awards, you probably have a lot of questions about choices the show made with regard to Usher’s Lifetime Achievement Award honor, but one is likely foremost among them — what did he say that made the TV censors go so berserk?

In case you didn’t see it, shortly after taking the stage to begin his speech, Usher used some colorful language while speaking about his absentee father — including a few of George Carlin’s infamous “Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television.” From that point on, the S&P watchdogs at BET — already pretty infamously touchy for a network that also aired the “Tip Drill” video (but only well after midnight) — leaned pretty heavily on the mute button, resulting in stretches of silence up to a few minutes long, just in case. So, just what did Usher say during his speech, and was it really all that bad?

Fortunately, thanks to fans in attendance posting the unedited speech online, we can hear it in full. In truth, Usher spent most of the speech talking about being motivated by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who presented his award. The salty language continued, but there was nothing conspiratorial, just a 45-year-old superstar enjoying his moment and talking his sh*t. You can check out the speech below.

Why Didn’t Normani Perform At The 2024 BET Awards?

At the 2024 BET Awards last night (June 30), so many people performed, like Ice Spice, GloRilla, and Megan Thee Stallion. Normani was supposed to take the stage as well, but that didn’t end up happening.

Why Didn’t Normani Perform At The 2024 BET Awards?

Before the show, Normani revealed she had sustained an injury that forced her to call the performance off. In an Instagram Story, she explained:

“I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone believe me. I wanted to get on here and give you guys an update letting you know that while in rehearsals for BET I had a really bad accident and injured myself. I am normally good for powering through under any circumstance but unfortunately due to my doctor’s orders, I am just not able to make this performance happen. I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage but performing would delay my healing. I have been going through my process and doing my best to make sense of my feelings regarding this. I am devastated and hate feeling like a disappointment to you but I have to focus on recovering at this time. Trust me, I hear you, and I see you. There is nothing more that | wanted to do than perform for you and also, get back to doing what fulfills me most- BEING ON STAGE. Thank you so much for understanding. Sending my love to BET for giving me and all of the other beautiful black women this opportunity. This is definitely NOT how l envisioned this weekend but best believe I will be championing everyone from home tonight.

I’m sorrrrrrrry guys and love you so much.”

She later shared a photo showing her right foot in a walking boot and her right knee bandaged up.

Fans Are Caught Up In Confusion At The Usher Lifetime Achievement Award Tribute Performance At The 2024 BET Awards

Tonight (June 30), the 2024 BET Awards was about giving entertainers their flowers. The most notable honorary of the evening was Usher. As the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, several other musicians joined in on the celebration.

Uproxx cover star Chlöe, Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, Coco Jones, Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, and more paid tribute to Usher with special performances of his greatest hits. Despite the jammed-packed lineup, following the set, users online shared their mixed reviews of what they witnessed.

The biggest gripe folks had on Twitter was the actual acts selected to take the stage. Continue below to read a few of their responses.

“Hopefully Usher gets a better tribute at the #GRAMMYs cause this wasn’t it. #BETAwards,” wrote one user.

“Usher deserved BETTER. Teyana Taylor was the only good one,” penned one user.

“I just don’t understand who dropped the ball for the KING OF RNB LIKE THIS?!?!?! SHOW YOURSELVES,” wrote another.

“Soooo Luke James, Tank, Vedo, Eric Bellinger, Trevor Jackson, Baby Face, Tevin Campbell, Miguel, etc weren’t available for this Usher tribute?,” added another.

Usher’s BET Lifetime Achievement Award Speech Was Censored So Heavily, Fans Had A Lot Of Questions

Usher has had one hell of a 2024. He’s got a new album, he’s headed on tour, he performed at the Super Bowl, and now, he’s been honored with a BET Lifetime Achievement Award. However, we aren’t sure how he feels about it, because BET’s infamously touchy censor weighed in pretty heavily during Usher’s acceptance speech after he let some colorful language fly in reference to his absentee father. The speech ended up sounding a bit like the radio edit of Snoop Dogg’s “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None),” only without the fly instrumental. Fans were quick to let their own commentary off the chain on Twitter.

Despite this, the mics were indeed on during the tribute performance honoring Usher, which featured an all-star roster of nearly all women singers covering hits from across Usher’s near-30-year run of hits. Included in the performance were Childish Gambino (“U Don’t Have To Call”), Keke Palmer (“You Make Me Wanna”), Summer Walker (“Good Good”), Coco Jones (“There Goes My Baby”), Marsha Ambrosius (“Confessions Pt.2”), Chlöe (“Good Kisser”), Tinashe (“Nice & Slow”), Teyana Taylor & Victoria Monét (“Bad Girl”), and Latto (“Yeah!”).

This isn’t the first time the BET Awards have had censor issues — it’s a tradition going back decades at this point. Nor is this the first time this month Usher has had technical difficulties on the mic, after Latto had to help save his performance at her Birthday Bash in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. Check out his speech… in all its censored glory… above.
