Dave Chappelle Laments On His Inspiration To Return To Stand-Up

Dave Chappelle is one of the most adored comedians of the 21st century. Beginning his career over two decades ago, his longevity and his consistent positive public reception stem from his genuine knack for comedy. Chappelle made an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast earlier this week reflecting on the history of Comedy Central’s Chapelle’s Show and reflecting on what pushed him to re-enter the comedy realm.

Chappelle and Rogan first discussed how fan’s voices were a pivotal force behind getting Chappelle’s Show back on the air. “It wasn’t a court of law,” Chappelle said around three minutes into the interview and also seen in the clip below. “I don’t believe I would have got anything in a court of law. I think, in the court of public opinion, it was a good time for me to say my piece and through the years it wasn’t something I would harp on. … It was something I was actually reluctant to talk about.”

When asked about what he embarked on during his years between the conclusion of the show and his return to the forefront of comedy, Chappelle explained, “I learned a lot.”

He added, “It was a humble existence. I had had young children and I was raising my kids. I was living a suburban life. And then every once in a while, I’d get this feeling like, I’m the funniest guy. I gotta get out there. And I would, like, fly to Denver and do a week in Denver or something. … I would perform like I was desperate for it.”

He then divulged the personal importance of his brief stint on the Oddball Comedy and Curiosity festival tour in 2013. He continued to explain how when he turned 40, he decided to himself “I’m gonna have fun.” He referenced the deaths of DMX and Black Rob as urging him to accomplish this goal.

“It’s not a midlife crisis,” he said. “It’s the opposite of that. It’s like, look, I know I don’t get to stay here forever. My time is limited and precious and I don’t take any of these things for granted. I don’t take this money for granted, this platform. And I’m not talking about the fame platform. I’m talking about comedy, this genre. This genre has been so good for me.”

Lil West Delivers New EP “Final Home”

Lil West has returned with his brand new EP Final Home, a six-song endeavor released via Republic Records. At an easily digestible runtime of thirteen minutes, the project should serve as an excellent introduction for those looking to familiarize themselves with the genre-bending young rapper. And for those who have been riding with West since the onset, Final Home feels like the culmination of a long-running creative journey, one that spells promising things to come in the future.

Setting things off with “Date A Star,” West reflects on romance with childlike innocence, a quality reflected in the Steezefield-laced instrumental. “Rosalia,” which may or may not draw inspiration from the Latin pop superstar, tackles similar themes, as West once again slides over a vibey beat from Jay Vee. Musically, guitars are present and accounted for throughout, capturing the emotional aesthetic that West appears to be seeking. Nowhere is that more evident than on “West Side,” a track that finds the young melodist veering closer to a mainstream pop sound than ever before.

Should you be interested in seeing where Delaware’s Lil West is currently sitting on a creative level, be sure to check out Final Home right now and sound off with your thoughts below.

Lelee Lyons From SWV’s Son Facing Charges Of Alleged Abuse From Woman

Last month, SWV was confirmed to be hitting the Verzuz stage against fellow R&B singing crew XScape. The leading ladies of 90s R&B will go hit for hit on the popular music battle show tomorrow, Saturday (May 8th). While the highly anticipated battle is set to be a great show, one member of SWV may find herself a little distracted due to recent allegations against her son.

Khiry Lyons, the son of Leanne “Lelee” Lyons of SWV fame, is accused of allegedly abusing a woman named Alexis Symone. In a video shared by Symone on social media, she claims Lyons bruised her shoulder, claiming officers have footage of the assault taking place. “This motherf*cker is lying!! This n*gga came to meet us at Harolds. He then wanted us to leave to go get drugs and we all got in my car!!” wrote Symone in her Instagram story.

She continued, “The fact that he’s making up an entire f*cking story up is insane b*tch the police literally have you on camera hitting me!! I don’t need no f*cking clout! I don’t wanna be famous!”

She added a subsequent screenshot of a text message exchange between her and the famous singer’s son accentuating what she described in her previous story. She continued in a second post where she noted, “And if you didn’t hit me, why did you run off? Why is there footage?! Are you crazy?!”

Lyons has claimed the allegations are completely fraudulent, sharing a simple message in his story reading, “Lol. It’s a kap. It’s a klout chase. It’s a jay. #disrespectfully.”

As of right now, Leanne Lyons has yet to come forward in response to the allegations against her son. We’ll keep you updated as this story develops.

Glasses Malone Taps Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, & Ty Dolla $ign For “6 N The Mornin'”

Glasses Malone has come through “6 N The Mornin,” an anthem that seems singlehandedly determined to spark nostalgic fondness for the generations of West Coast gangsta rap come and gone. For the occasion, Malone has connected with Snoop Dogg, Ty Dolla $ign, and of course, Ice-T, who set the tone back in 1986 with the release of his own classic single of the same name.

Speaking of which, the legendary OG Ice-T makes sure to put in work on this updated “GMIX” variant, turning in a highlight verse packed with G’d up imagery and unapologetic violence. “I’m a sucker for war, I love conflict,” spits Ice. “I love the way my wrist feel when the glock kick / death threats, vendettas and pain / dreams of killing half the n**as in the rap game.” In addition to Ice’s standout verse, Malone and Snoop also make sure to keep stride, while Ty Dolla’s dulcet tones bring a touch of class to the chorus.

Should you appreciate the West Coast, you’ll probably find something to enjoy on “6 N The Mornin (GMIX).” Check it out for yourself and sound off with your thoughts on the standout performer in the comments below.

QUOTABLE LYRICS

I’m a sucker for war, I love conflict
I love the way my wrist feel when the glock kick
Death threats, vendettas and pain
Dreams of killing half the n**as in the rap game

Mac Miller’s Estate Says No To A Biography Planned For Release Near His B-Day

The music industry suffered a crushing blow in 2018 when Mac Miller passed away. Since then, avid fans of the late multi-hyphenate have worked hard to try and keep Mac’s legacy alive in a tasteful way that appeases both his supporters and the family members he left behind. The Mac Miller estate recently announced the upcoming biography The Book Of Mac: Remembering Mac Miller penned by Donna-Claire Chesman.

While the family of the late artist approved of this biography, journalist Paul Cantor’s upcoming Mac biography called Most Dope: The Extraordinary Life Of Mac Miller has not received the same reception from the Mac Miller estate. Slated for a January 17th release on the late artist’s birthday, Cantor’s efforts have been denounced by Mac’s family.

In a statement shared by Miller’s estate officially denouncing the upcoming project, they noted that it was, “not authorized or endorsed by Malcolm’s family,” going on to add that Cantor was not associated with Mac during his life. The statement also highlights that Cantor was advised that  “the family and friends of Malcolm were uncomfortable with him authoring this biography.”

The book has since been made available for pre-order, further rubbing Mac’s family the wrong way and leading them to suspect it was announced to take advantage of the Book of Mac pre-order and confuse unaware fans.

The family officially expressed their dissatisfaction with Cantor and Abrams Press for marking the release date so close to Mac’s birthday (January 18).   “With that in mind,” the statement reads, “We urge those that wish to support Malcolm and his legacy to abstain from purchasing this new book.” You can read the full statement from the family below.

Mac Miller’s Estate Denounces A Biography Planned For Release Near His Birthday

With the Mac Miller estate announcing The Book Of Mac: Remembering Mac Miller releasing this October, fans may be surprised to learn that Donna-Claire Chesman’s book isn’t the only one about the rapper planned for release in the next year. Journalist Paul Cantor also has a biography in the works called Most Dope: The Extraordinary Life Of Mac Miller with a release date of January 17, but unlike Chesman’s book, Cantor’s effort has drawn the ire of Miller’s estate.

Sharing a statement through publicity company Orienteer’s Nick Dierl, Miller’s estate denounced the upcoming project, saying that it was “not authorized or endorsed by Malcolm’s family” and noted that Cantor wasn’t closely connected with Mac during the rapper’s life. The statement also points out the Cantor was advised that “the family and friends of Malcolm were uncomfortable with him authoring this biography.” The fact that the book has since been made available for pre-order also rubbed Mac’s family the wrong way, prompting them to wonder if the release date was announced to take advantage of the Book Of Mac pre-order in hopes of confusing fans.

The family expresses disappointment with Cantor and Abrams Press for the move and for setting the release date so close to Mac’s birthday (January 18). “With that in mind,” the statement reads, “We urge those that wish to support Malcolm and his legacy to abstain from purchasing this new book.” You can read the full statement below.

Mac Miller is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Conan O’Brien Hilariously Accepts An Apology From BTS’ J-Hope For Getting His Name Wrong

Over the past few days, Conan O’Brien and BTS have found themselves in a bit of a situation. A few days ago, clip from a South Korean variety show surfaced, in which BTS’ J-Hope misidentified O’Brien as “Curtain” before he and his bandmates realized the error and had a laugh about it. O’Brien featured the clip on Conan and playfully got upset with the group. Now, the saga continues: Today, J-hope offered an apology to O’Brien, which he has accepted.

Taking to the official BTS Twitter account, J-Hope wrote, “Sorry,,,,, Curtain [kissing face emojis] @ConanOBrien.” He then used a subsequent tweet to tack on a selfie of himself pouting his lips. O’Brien responded with humor, of course, replying, “In Hobi’s defense, Curtain makes about as much sense as being named Conan.”

(“Hobi,” by the way, is J-Hope’s nickname.)

O’Brien made it clear on his show that there were no hard feelings about the mishap, as he said through laughter, “I’ll get you, BTS. Oh I’ll get you good. And by that, I mean I’ll silently resent you. I have no power to do anything to you. You’re going to go on to have huge success. I’m very old and on the way out and you guys are pretty much running the world. So when I say I’ll get you, I just mean I’m gonna stew in my own juices for quite a long time, and you’ll be vastly unaware.”
