Paul Wall Dishes On New Music, The Houston Rap Scene & More

2024-01-11-paul-wall

Paul Wall recently sat down for an exclusive interview with SOHH. The People’s Champ discussed his latest projects, the thriving rap scene in Houston, viral debates on social media, and more.

Houston’s Finest Is Back

In recent years, Paul Wall has been focused on releasing quality music independently, with his latest album, The Great Wall, serving as a testament to his positive vibes and true representation.

“I wanted to put some good positive vibes out there with everything from the production to the lyrics.” Wall also expressed that he wanted the album to represent him. “I want it to be the best representation of me,” Wall said.

Paul Wall x That Mexican OT

Alongside his music, the “Sitting Sideways” rapper also expressed admiration for fellow Houston rappers That Mexican OT and their collaborations, including the popular track “Covered In Ice.”

“Man, That Mexican OT been grinding for a long time putting in work on a regional scale or an independent scale. He’s got so much talent.”

Paul Wall also disclosed that he and That Mexican OT shared the same manager, leading to inquiries about feature collaboration costs. Both parties expressed mutual curiosity and admiration, ultimately deciding to collaborate willingly, fueled by their shared appreciation for each other’s work.

Grillz

Another single that Paul Wall worked on with That Mexican OT is “Johnny Dang,” which is about the famous Houston jeweler, who has been referenced by many rappers in their lyrics for years.

To many rap fans, the two are credited with popularizing grills in hip-hop. said that he started as a customer for grillz and that he just wanted to set his friends up. Wall credited Dang for increasing his interest in grillz.

“The same way Johnny Dang gave me my start to sell grillz like that is the same way he gives other jewelers their start every single day.” he referred to Dang as the “number one grill jeweler on the planet.”

One of the biggest songs that Wall has been a part of is the 2005 hit “Grillz,” with Nelly, along with  Ali & Gipp.

The Houston Rap Scene

As a veteran of the Houston rap scene, Paul Wall shared his enthusiasm about its current state.

“I love the current state of the Houston rap scene,” Wall said excitedly. The biggest part of it that I love is the fanbase is so diverse. That allows every branch of the Houston tree to flourish,” Wall added.

The Houston native mentioned that all over Texas, the support is growing for many artists, regardless of where they are from.

Wall also shouted out fellow Houston artists such as Don Toliver, Monaleo, Sauce Walka, and others for being unique in their sound and bringing more attention to Houston.

‘Still Tippin’’

When drawing parallels between contemporary Houston rappers and the city’s rap pioneers, Wall refrained from mentioning specific names to avoid offending. He believes that when a new rapper shares similarities with a veteran, it should be regarded as a compliment rather than a critique.

“When I hear new artists that sound like an older artist I don’t think that’s an insult, I think it’s a compliment.”

The Great Wall rapper says as a fan, the resurgence of nostalgia is beneficial for representing the city. Additionally, he highlights the importance of rap elements such as style, cadence, delivery, and production style.

Toward the end of the interview, Wall gave his thoughts on the viral debate on social media of who had the best verse on the 2004 hit “Still Tippin,”  which featured fellow Houston rappers Slim Thug and Mike Jones. When asked who he thought had the best verse, he said that he went the “hardest,” but he credited Slim Thug for the nostalgic feel to his first verse.”

“My personal favorite is Slim Thug because of the nostalgia of his original verse of where the hook sample came from.” Paul Wall also gave props to Jones for having many quotables in his verse.

SOHH Sits Down With DUBG3

In a related interview, SOHH also had the opportunity to speak with 12-year-old rap prodigy DUBG3. Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, and gaining acclaim with the support of Houston rap legend Mike Jones, DUBG3 is making waves in the rap game at a young age.

Russell Wilson & Pete Carroll Party After Coach’s Departure From Seattle

Russell Wilson returned to Seattle to spearhead a send-off for Pete Carroll, the coach with whom he won a Super Bowl. Wilson and wealth of other former Seahawks traveled to Seattle on short notice. This came after Carroll transitioned to an “advisory” role with the team after 14 seasons as head coach. “Grateful for all you’ve done for me, my family, teammates and so many others!” Wilson wrote on Instagram.

Carroll drafted Wilson out of Wisconsin in the third round of the 2013 Draft. Wilson was a rookie starter and helped turned the team into a powerhouse. They would miss the playoffs just over the next nine seasons. However, after an injury-plagued 7-10 2021 campaign that saw the team finish last in the division for the first time since 2000, Wilson was shipped to Denver. This led many to believe that there had been a falling out between coach and quarterback. Despite this speculation, it appears that the pair are in fact on good terms.

Broncos GM Speaks On Russell Wilson Situation

Meanwhile, Denver Broncos GM George Paton has denied that a midseason conversation about Wilson’s contract was the reason that Wilson was benched for the final two games of the NFL season. “During the bye week, I did reach out to Russ’ agent in good faith and in a creative attempt to adjust his contract. We couldn’t get a deal done and we did move on with our season. It didn’t come up again. Fast forward, Week 17, Sean makes a change at the quarterback position. This was a football decision made by Sean in what he thought was the best interest of the team. This was completely independent of any conversation I had with the agent. Again, it was a football decision,” Paton said.

Furthermore, Paton’s comments came at the same press conference in which the Broncos denied reports they were preparing to cut Wilson in the offseason. “I told him, ‘Look, I don’t think it’s going to be a long, drawn-out process,’ but it hasn’t been decided relative to what our plans are. As soon as we know something certainly, he would be the first to know,” head coach Sean Payton said. “Yeah, listen, otherwise it would have been like ‘hey, goodbye. We’ll look at all the scenarios and try to do what’s best for the Broncos. But communication will be important, and, yeah, that final decision hasn’t been made,” Payton added when asked if conversations had included a path to retain Wilson.

Is Solange’s ‘In Service To Whom’ Her New Album?

solange

It has been nearly five years since Solange Knowles released a new album, 2019’s When I Get Home. Since then, she hasn’t been in the spotlight much, despite composing the score for a ballet, directing a short film, Passage, and launching the Saint Heron creative agency. But it seems that may be changing soon, as the singer recently returned to social media to issue a rare post sharing photos from In Service To Whom, a four-part live performance featuring a multimedia presentation at Volume Fest at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

According to Saint Heron’s website, In Service To Whom will see Solange perform with a 10-piece ensemble playing orchestral works she composed from 2018 to 2023, along with her own commercial releases. Meanwhile, on Solange’s Instagram, she describes the piece and the inspiration behind it:

As I contemplate the evolution and maturation of my artistry, “In Service To Whom” was developed around constructing new narratives surrounding my body, the posture of rest, protection from the gaze, and speaks to a reemergence into the world of everyday life following periods of personal incubation and self-revitalization. The piece featured a sound piece featuring artist Autumn Knight and premiered “Not Necessarily In Arms Reach, Music for Two Tubas ” and “If the Promise is Large” for solo cello and double bass.

Fans in the replies and comments on both posts have expressed anticipation and confusion about whether this work constitutes an impending release — like a new album, for instance. However, Solange, who’s thrived in recent years while cultivating an air of mystery about her work, doesn’t seem forthcoming. Surely, she’ll let us all know exactly what it is — and whether she really will be releasing a new album — soon enough.

The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ Just Made Spotify History By Being The First Song To Cross An Unreal Streaming Milestone

The Weeknd is an undisputed king of the streaming music era, as evidenced by the fact that “Blinding Lights” is the most-played song in Spotify history. Since its release in late 2019, the song has been racking up streams, and now, it has reached a height no song before it ever has: It’s the first song to ever reach 4 billion total streams on Spotify.

As of this post, Spotify currently shows “Blinding Lights” as having 3,999,046,181 streams, but some started reporting this afternoon (January 11) that the song had eclipsed 4 billion. Regardless, if it hasn’t hit 4 billion quite yet, it will any second now (perhaps by the time you read this) and become the first song to ever do so.

Currently, after “Blinding Lights” on the all-time Spotify list are Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” (3.74 billion streams), Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” (3.15 billion), Post Malone and Swae Lee’s “Sunflower” (3.1 billion), and Tones And I’s “Dance Monkey” (2.97 billion). Just outside the top 5 is The Weeknd and Daft Punk’s “Starboy” at 2.95 billion plays.

The last song to break this sort of ground was “Shape Of You.” It used to be Spotify’s most-streamed track ever, and in December 2021, it became the first song to hit 3 billion plays on the platform. At the time, “Blinding Lights” was second on the all-time list, but it rose to No. 1 in January 2023.

LeBron James And Serena Williams Brought Up In YSL RICO Trial

Every time it seems like the strangest thing yet has happened in the Young Thug YSL RICO case, it manages to one-up itself. Across the past few days, one of the label’s co-founders Tick has been testifying and there’s been a number of explosive moments from his testimony alone. But that may not even cover the most surprising development. That came when the court’s Zoom meeting was hacked, seemingly by a fan of Young Thug. The fan interrupted the trial proceedings while calling for the rapper to be freed.

Today, Tick was back again this time for cross-examination from the defense. One of the strategies Thug’s defense lawyers deployed was an attempt to muddy the water about what signified somebody as a gang member or gang affiliate. To do so he introduced several pieces of evidence of unaffiliated celebrities doing similar things to what the prosecution had alleged were gang activity. This included Lil Wayne’s tattoos, the way Serena Williams was walking, and most notably a clip of Lebron James. In the clip, Lebron does a “slime” handshake with one of his Lakers teammates. The defense is using that as evidence that more evidence is needed to prove somebody is actually gang affiliated. Check out the video of the testimony below.

LeBron James Video Used In Young Thug Trial

Before Tick could finish being cross-examined, the judge delayed the continuation of the trial until later this month. Wild headlines about the YSL case will slow down until at least January 22 when it’s due to get back under way. The judge left both the jury and legal teams with a request to use the time off to get their appropriate flu shots and vaccinations.

Sickness has already been an issue in the case responsible for more than one delay in trial proceedings. What do you think of Tick answering questions about LeBron James handshakes during the YSL RICO trial? Do you think the defense’s evidence helped raised the barrier for proof of gang affiliation? Let us know in the comment section below.

Lil Yachty Posts His Playlist Online After Fans Clowned A Fake One

Lil Yachty is many things: a rapper, stylist, gamer, songwriter, psych-rock creative, and the list goes on. Given his unique aesthetics, the cultural splash he made on impact, and the polarizing nature of a lot of his art and statements, he has also been identified as a key tastemaker in the past seven years or so. Maybe that seems far-fetched, but the Atlanta native is always down to share his tastes and proclivities with the world. Recently, though, people clowned him for this very fact after they found an alleged playlist of his on Spotify that many deemed “basic.” When the 26-year-old caught wind, he said it was fake but posted his own Apple Music playlist to prove it.

Furthermore, it’s about 450 songs long, totaling in at about 30 hours and 41 minutes. Genre-wise, it’s pretty all over the indie/rock/pop/R&B spectrum, although it doesn’t contain much in the way of strict hip-hop. That makes sense, though; Lil Yachty’s spoken before about how he usually doesn’t listen to other rap music to stay fresh and focused on his own craft. In addition, he explored a lot of different approaches and genres in 2023, something that he’s already continuing in 2024. For example, look no further than Faye Webster’s new single featuring him, “Lego Ring,” which is a quaint and colorful indie-shoegaze-alternative jam.

Lil Yachy Shares His Actual Playlist After Fake One Goes Viral

As for the picks themselves, there are plenty of songs here from Sampha, Drake, Cocteau Twins, Solange, ROSALÍA, Prefab Sprout, Bibio, Bktherula, and many more. Surprisingly, though, there are no songs here from Tyler, The Creator, despite him shouting Lil Yachty out on his own favorite songs list earlier in 2023. Still, we don’t always expect things to be quid pro quo between rappers when it comes to praise. It’s just interesting to see because, as we end a year and start a new one, artists often take the time to shout out their favorite work from their peers.

But Yachty’s playlist isn’t really about that, and is more of a general look into his listening habits. The “Paradigm” artist has a lot of gems on here, and who know what he’ll come across in 2024? Maybe we’ll get an update from him in the near future to see what else caught his ear. For more news and the latest updates on Lil Yachty, keep checking in with HNHH.

K Camp’s Ruptured Vocal Cord Surgery: How This Unknown Condition Silences Artists

K Camp has revealed that his performing career is on hold as he prepares to undergo surgery for ruptured vocal cords. This unknown condition has silenced many beloved artists, and the Atlanta rapper’s announcement on Instagram has left fans concerned about his future in music.

K Camp Asks For Fans’ Prayers

On Nov. 13, K Camp took to Instagram to share the news of his upcoming vocal surgery. He expressed gratitude that the condition is not cancerous and emphasized the importance of his fans’ support during this time:

“Dear fans, I wanted to share some important news. I’ll be undergoing vocal surgery in a few days. Good news is that it’s not cancerous. Your support means the world to me. Let’s pray that this doesn’t affect me or my music . Thank you for your understanding and love during this time,” K Camp said.

The “Lottery” rapper did not specify how long he will be unable to perform, but the surgery was scheduled for Nov. 15, and he won’t be able to speak until he has fully healed.

Silencing Artists: Vocal Cord Injuries

Ruptured vocal cords are typically caused by trauma to the vocal cords, which can result from sustained or loud talking. This trauma causes small blood vessels in the vocal cords to rupture, leading to a loss of voice.

Unfortunately, K Camp is not the only artist to face this issue. Legendary rap group Run-DMC member Darryl “DMC” McDaniels has shared his experience of losing his voice and suffering from larynx spasms due to excessive performing and screaming on stage. McDaniels also attributed his alcoholism as a contributing factor.

Another example of an artist affected by a vocal cord injury is Dallas rapper The D.O.C. In November 1989, he was involved in a near-fatal car accident that left him with a raspier voice. Despite his rising career, at the time, the accident and resulting injuries significantly impacted his vocal abilities.

The ‘Pretty Ones’

In an April 2023  interview with SOHH, K Camp discussed his Pretty Ones Tour and various business moves he was making in his career. He also addressed the viral success of his single “Renegade” and its impact on social media.

Drake To Go On Hiatus Due To Health Concerns

Health concerns have forced prominent artists to take breaks from their careers. One example is rap superstar Drake, who recently announced a temporary hiatus due to ongoing stomach issues in October.
