‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Starring André Holland Picked up by Roadside Attractions After Sundance Success

‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’ Starring André Holland Picked up by Roadside Attractions After Sundance Success

One of Sundance’s biggest hits this year was Exhibiting Forgiveness. Starring André Holland, Andra Day, John Earl Jelks, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, it was just acquired by Roadside Attractions. The studio feels so strongly about this film that they plan to release it wide theatrically this fall.

Exhibiting Forgiveness marks the feature directorial debut of Titus Kaphar, who also penned the screenplay. Here’s the official synopsis:

Tarrell Rodin (Holland) is an admired American painter who lives with his wife, singer-songwriter Aisha (Day), and young son, Jermaine. His artwork excavates beauty from the anguish of his youth, keeping past wounds at bay. His path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, La’Ron (Jelks), a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. La’Ron visits at the invitation of Tarrell’s mother, Joyce (Ellis-Taylor) a pious woman with a profound and joyful spirituality. She hopes that Tarrell can open his heart to forgiveness, giving them all another chance at being a family. Tarrell and La’Ron learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving in this raw and deeply moving film.

Also starring are Ian Foreman, Daniel Michael Barriere, Matthew Elam and Jaime Ray Newman.

“Titus has changed the world with his art, and this film will bring him a legion of new fans and delight the many who already love his work,” in a statement from Roadside Attractions Co-Presidents, Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff. “These are four jaw-dropping performances which we have no doubt is the finest ensemble filmgoers will see this year.” Kaphar added “Even the most extraordinary film in the world would remain hidden without the right distribution team; I’m so excited that our film has found its champion.  Roadside has a reputation for bringing us unflinching movie experiences that center innovative and character-driven storytelling. I’m honored to have their support, and proud that Exhibiting Forgiveness will become part of their outstanding portfolio.”

“Exhibiting Forgiveness” was produced by Stephanie Allain, Derek Cianfrance, Jamie Patricof, Sean Cotton and Titus Kaphar, with Claire Brooks, Stephanie Blackwood, Kim Coleman, serving as executive producing, and Rachel Halilej, Natalie Renee and Michael VQ co-produced.

Netflix ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 Casts Thandiwe Newton

Thandiwe Newton, known for her starring roles in Mission Impossible, Westworld, The Pursuit of Happyness, and more, just announced that she is joining the cast of the hit series Wednesday, Season 2, for Netflix.

Variety exclusively reported that Newton, who famously changed her stage name back from “Thandie” to its authentic spelling of “Thandiwe,” is taking her talents to the weird and spooky series based on the timeless sitcom The Addams Family.

There is no word yet on who Newton is playing. Like most reports, they’re keeping this under wraps for now. Variety reported that she is the second new cast member announced after Steve Buscemi, which is itself a big announcement.

ICYMI, Wednesday stars Jenna Ortega (Scream franchise) as teenage Wednesday Addams. Wednesday attends a supernatural boarding school to begrudgingly follow in the traditions of her parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams (Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta Jones). While at school, she learns more about her emerging psychic abilities and how it connects her to an ancestral prophecy and how Wednesday can defeat a killer monster roaming the school grounds.

MC Lan Announces Release Date For New Playboi Carti Collab

Playboi Carti is one of the most enigmatic artists in hip-hop. It’s impossible to tell what he’s going to do next, and even tougher to gauge when he plans to drop new music. Most of the insight fans get is from Carti’s collaborators. This scarcity of information is what makes MC Lan’s recent interview so interesting. The Brazilian artist revealed that he’s been working closely with Playboi Carti over the last few months, and the two of them plan on releasing a joint single to coincide with the release of both of their albums.

MC Lan went on the FLOW Podcast on April 23, and covered a wide away of topics over four hours. The name drop that nobody mentioned, though, was Carti. MC Lan claimed that he’s been working with lots of U.S. talent, and the “Magnolia” rapper was at the top of his list. He went as far as to say that he’s done production work on Carti’s upcoming album. “There are many American artists out there,” he said. “Like the upcoming album from Playboi Carti. I can’t spill much but most of the albums, the ones I’m in touch with… I have a hand in it, I have a finger in it.”

Playboi Carti’s Collab Is Rumored For A May Release

MC Lan then stated that Carti will be appearing on his upcoming album in return. There was no word about a title or release date for the album, but he announced that their joint single will be dropping on May 23. Carti hasn’t commented on Lan’s claims, but then again, he usually has very little to say about release dates and concrete rollouts. He has, however, been teasing his upcoming album, titled MUSIC, since 2022.

The premise behind the title, according to Carti’s interview with XXL Magazine, is to push beyond genre conventions and mix in different styles. He doesn’t want to make hip-hop or rage music, he just wants to make music. “[I’ll] name my album MUSIC because that’s where I’m at,” he reasoned. “Because that’s all it is at this point.” Carti’s willingness to work with MC Lan, a pioneer in Brazilian funk music, displays this desire to experiment. Fans will find out soon enough whether Lan’s claims are legit.

Common Hypes Up New Album With Pete Rock: “It’s In My Top”

Common has classics. The Chicago emcee has managed the rare feat of staying relevant across multiple decades, and part of why he’s been able to do so is his ear. Common picks great producers to work with, and the results usually speak for themselves (with the occasional Universal Mind Control hiccup). This is why his comments regarding his upcoming album are so exciting. Com Sense revealed that he’s been in the studio with none other than Pete Rock, and the stuff they’re cooking up is evidently up there with the best music of their respective careers.

Common divulged this exciting development during a MusiCares panel in Santa Monica on April 22. He appeared alongside fellow Chicago luminary Lupe Fiasco, and was asked to rank his three best albums. Common’s answers were dead on as far as general consensus goes. He chose Be (2005) and Like Water for Chocolate (2000) as the top two, but he paused before picking the last one.

Common Is “Excited” For Fans To Hear It

His rationale was that his upcoming album contains some of his favorite music ever. “Y’all gon’ think I’m just talking,” he prefaced. “But [I want to pick] this new Pete Rock joint. I’ma see y’all when I come back, whenever I’m back, and y’all can tell me if I’m bullsh*ttin’ or not.” Com went on to say that the untitled album has received stellar feedback from the few who have heard it. “It’s in my top,” he asserted. “I’ve had a couple people coming in saying, ‘Yo, this is one of your best albums.’ So I’m excited about it.” Since the new one isn’t out yet, Common relented and picked Resurrection (1994) as his third best album.

Common and Pete Rock haven’t crossed paths as often as one would assume. They collaborated on “Tha Bizness” off De La Soul’s 1996 album, and “Verbal Murder 2” off of Rock’s 1998 release. Their most famous song together, however, is 1994’s “The B*tch In Yoo.” It was a diss record aimed at Ice Cube, and remains one of Com’s most lyrically aggressive showcases. Common and Rock are both at different points in their career, but their track record proves they have great chemistry.

Lil Nas X’s SoundCloud Renaissance Continued With ‘Trust Me,’ A Song About Discovering His Sexuality

Lil Nas X seems to be inching closer to the release of Nasarati 2, his follow-up to 2018’s Nasarati.

Lil Nas X takes pride in unconventionality, and so it is unsurprising that he has been releasing songs on SoundCloud as opposed to releasing singles in a traditional manner. On Wednesday night, April 24, he continued the trend by dropping “Trust Me” on SoundCloud. “This song means a lot to me,” Lil Nas X posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.

The first verse finds Lil Nas X transparently recounting the adolescent exploration of his sexuality, including “Grindr sessions.” He raps, “Back in middle school, I was fiending for dick / Seventh grade, sending my homies some pics / Daddy never knew what I did as a kid / He would’ve crucified me but / Trust me, I get it.”

The Grammy-winning provocateur teased a snippet of “Trust Me” within a March 9 Instagram carousel captioned, “been hoarding music for years smh I hate my relationship with fear of my songs not doing well and perception. I wish I could just release music and not give af! Anyways enough venting…what’s you guys top 2 of these snippets??”

“Trust Me” was produced by Ojivolta and Omer Fedi, both of whom produced on Lil Nas X’s 2021 debut studio album Montero.

Previously, Lil Nas X released “Light Again,” “Right There,” and “Lean On My Body” on SoundCloud. Those three are also on Lil Nas X’s YouTube page, but as of this writing, “Trust Me” remains exclusively on SoundCloud. Lil Nas X’s Billboard Hot 100 charter “J Christ” remains his only traditionally released single of 2024.

50 Cent Endorses Gucci Mane’s Diddy Diss: “That’s What You Get!”

50 Cent is not letting up. The rapper has been the propagator of the phrase “No Diddy” on social media, as a means of clowning disgraced mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. He’s used it on during interviews and IG captions, but the phrase reached new levels of attention on April 24 when Gucci Mane dropped the song “TakeDat.” Gucci goes at the Bad Boy founder for four minutes straight by saying “No Diddy” after every line, and 50 absolutely loved it. He was such a fan of Gucci’s diss, in fact, that he reposted it on his own Instagram profile with an endorsement.

“Oh sh*t,” 50 wrote in the caption. “Wop took dat hit. This 🥷🏾Diddy POPPED.” Nobody has been more openly critical of Diddy than 50, especially once the criminal allegations started to roll in. He posted pics from the raid on Diddy’s house in March, and even found time to praise a woman holding a “No Diddy” sign during a ceremony in Shreveport. The “21 Questions” rapper added insult to injury by talking to Diddy directly in the caption. “That’s what you get f*cking wit me,” he added. Fans flocked to the comment section, suggesting that 50 hop on the “TakeDat” remix.

50 Cent and Gucci Mane have historically been on the same. 50 supported the Atlanta legend when he dropped a diss track against Jeezy titled “Rumors” in 2022. The track had a bar referencing the “ghost of Pookie,” and 50 hopped on Instagram Live to rap along while doing his best Gucci Mane impression. 50 had previously had beef with Young Jeezy himself, so there was no love lost between rivals. 50 and Gucci, who have often been compared to one another, also collaborated on the 2013 song “Recently.”

The G-Unit mogul is continuing his anti-Diddy campaign behind the scenes. In December, he announced plans to release a documentary focusing on Diddy’s various sexual crimes. “The Diddy documentary is in development through G-Unit Film and Television with 50 serving as executive producer,” a rep said. The proceeds from the documentary will be donated to victims of sexual assault and rape. A release date has not yet been announced.

Usher’s Teenage Son Stole Usher’s Phone To Finesse Meeting PinkPantheress, And Usher’s Retelling Of The Saga Is Hilarious

Usher has access to anyone at any time, and his son knows it. Naviyd, 15, did what any teenager would do in his position: Steal your world-famous father’s phone and hit up PinkPantheress.

“So…a week or so ago my son, Naviyd, stole my phone so he could dm his favorite artist @pinkpantheress,” Usher shared on his Instagram Story on Wednesday night, April 24.

The next post is a screenshot of Naviyd’s DM from April 9, reading, “Hello this is Usher’s son Naviyd I’m you true biggest fan please follow me back @_naviyd_ I put him on to masterpieces.” PinkPantheress graciously replied, “hahahahahaa this is wild!”

Next, Usher recounted what happened from his perspective, writing, “Now I just so happened to check my DMs earlier this past week and saw a message exchange from someone with a Powerpuff girl as their profile pic…so I’m like the hell is this.” (PinkPantheress’ Instagram icon is the Powerpuff girl Buttercup.)

Usher continued, “I open it and I’m like oh this boy done DMd this girl from my damn phone..” The following post is another screenshot — this time, showing Usher messaging an apology to PinkPantheress: “I’m so sorry … my son is a super fan.” Again, PinkPantheress was extremely gracious and replied, “don’t apologise! happy to have this interaction. I’d love to host y’all at the next show.”

Usher explained on his subsequent Instagram Story posts that he initially pretended that Naviyd “wasn’t allowed to go” to PinkPantheress’ Capable Of Love Tour “because he did the MOST just to connect with her on my account,” but he let him go to reward Naviyd’s super-fandom, which led to PinkPantheress taking a photo with Naviyd backstage and FaceTiming with Usher.

“PARENTAL TAKEAWAY,” Usher wrote, in conclusion. “This was a great moment for Naviyd … this was him movin on something he was passionate about. Yes… he violated my trust in the process and for that I will never trust him around my phone, but I should have known better. Nonetheless, I appreciate the hustle and him makin’ it happen. From a text, to a concert, to the artist. He masterminded this whole thing and made it happen.”
