On this date in 1965, Jeffrey Townes, better known to Hip Hop and television fans as “Jazzy Jeff” was born in the City of Brother Love and has become one of the best to ever place their hands on a pair of Technics 1200s.
Originally known as the DJ for rapper/actor The Fresh Prince aka Will Smith, Jeff’s claim to fame was his seemingly innate ability to play the wheels of steel like instruments, popularizing the “transformer” style scratching sound which was mimicked by many DJs who succeeded and preceded him. The two-time Grammy Award winner later became an established producer, sitting behind the boards for artists like Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, The Roots, Floetry, and many more. Just last year, Jazz worked on the Straight Outta Compton film, doing scratch overdubs for the classic flick.
Happy born day and salute to one of the pioneers of the 1s and 2s of Hip Hop culture!

Travis Scott, Burna Boy, and Luke Combs have joined the list of performers set to take the stage at the 2024 Grammy Awards. CBS made the announcement during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. The three artists will be joining Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, and Olivia Rodrigo, who were already announced.
All three of the new artists are up for awards at the ceremony. Scott is nominated in the best rap album category for his latest project, Utopia. Despite having 10 nominations throughout his career, winning at this year’s ceremony would give him his first award. Combs is up for best country solo performance for his version of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” Burna Boy is up for the most awards of all three, being nominated in four categories. These include best global music album (I Told Them…), best African music performance (“City Boys”), best global music performance (“Alone”), and best melodic rap performance (“Sittin’ on Top of the World”). CBS plans to announce more performers in the next two weeks as the ceremony approaches.
Outside of just the performers, SZA leads the pack with nine total nominations. She’s up for album of the year for SOS as well as record of the year, song of the year, and more. Phoebe Bridgers ranks as the second-most nominated artist with seven chances to win, most of which stem from her work with Boygenius. N.W.A. will also be receiving a lifetime achievement award.
The 66th annual Grammy Awards will air on Sunday, February 4 at 8:00 PM on CBS and Paramount+. Be on the lookout for further updates on the ceremony on HotNewHipHop.
Common and Jennifer Hudson confirmed their relationship in an upcoming interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show that will air in full on Monday. The news comes after nearly two years of speculation about whether they are dating. Hudson shared a teaser for the interview on Instagram, on Sunday.
“Let’s get down to business, Mr. Common,” Hudson jokes in the clip. “I’m a host, and so I have to ask you this question, because everybody always wants to know this. Are you dating anyone?” From there, Common responds: “So, yes. And I’m in a relationship that is (with) one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met, in life. She’s smart. She loves God. She has something real down to earth about her. She’s talented. But I set my standard kind of high because she had to have an EGOT. She had to win an Oscar on her first movie. I set my stand high. She had to get her own talk show.”
While sharing the clip on Instagram, Hudson remarked that fans will be able to hear her response to the comments when the show airs, on Monday. In a further preview, as noted by PEOPLE, Common adds: “This relationship is a happy place for me. Seeing her happy actually makes me really happy. So, I’m very grateful. I thank God each and every day, and I’m just letting God guide this relationship.” Check out the teaser Hudson shared on Instagram below.
Waka Flocka Flame called on Donald Trump to abolish Columbus Day on Twitter, Saturday. In doing so, he labeled celebrations of the holiday a “spit in our faces.” In response to the post, many fans questioned why he asked Trump, when Joe Biden is the current President of the United States. It’s also a strange time for the request, considering the day is celebrated on October 12.
“Dear Trump abolish Christopher Columbus Day… As a what’s called Blackman in United States this holiday is a spit in our faces… Thanks from Waka Flocka Flame and the People!!!” he wrote on the platform. The holiday is often also recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day, paying respect to the contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples.
When The Neighborhood Talk shared a screenshot of the post on Instagram, fans had plenty of questions. “This is what happens when people are clueless to how it all works. Please go back to doing what you were doing smh,” one user wrote. Another commented: “Telling a deranged racist who doesn’t respect him as a human being to abolish a holiday about a drunken and deranged racist? Never going to happen.” Check out Waka’s post for Donald Trump below.
