Swizz Beatz Talks Introducing Burna Boy & Wizkid To The States

Swizz Beatz has been a part of many monumental musical moments. From his tapes with Lil Wayne, to his new EP honoring 50 years of Hip-Hop, Swizz has been a central piece in Hip-Hop history. Recently, the star producer appeared on Amazon Music’s Roundtable Rotation, with Rob Markman, Speedy Morman, Nyla Symone, and Gabe P. During the interview, Swizz Beatz made claims that he introduced America to Afrobeat stars, Burna Boy and Wizkid. He also made even bolder claims regarding his impact on bring Afrobeats to the U.S. audience.

“See, the key thing that you said was you got on a plane and you went to Ghana and now you’re stuck on Afrobeats,” he said to the outlet. Swizz Beatz continued, “I introduced Wizkid to America. I was the first person to play his song.” Not only that, the super producer noted that he and his wife, Alicia Keys, even danced to Wizkid on a trip. Furthermore, Swizz went into more detail about his impact on introducing Afrobeats to America. “[I was the] first person to bring Burna Boy to the States,” he told Speedy and the gang.

Swizz Beatz Makes Bold Claims

Additionally, Swizz Beatz mentioned, “Actually, he had a Ruff Ryders bandana on and I introduced him on the stage.” The Ruff Ryders producer also noted how the Afrobeats sound is piercing through and how he’s trying to keep the momentum going. “It’s piercing through, by the way. People are more open-minded — they just need the right entry point,” Swizz added. While Swizz Beatz might’ve thought he was showing love for the global success of Afrobeats, others had mixed feelings.

Godwin Tom, managing director of Sony Music Publishing, Nigeria, responded in a tweet detailing Wizkid’s success from his eyes. “Here is a story for you… @MI_Abaga put Wiz on his groundbreaking album ‘Talk About It’ and properly introduced him to the market,” he began. While going into even more detail about the Afrobeats artist’s rise to success he also gave thanks to Swizz and Akon for showing love. However, he didn’t want a false narrative being spun either. “We are making a mistake in allowing others tell our stories and soon we won’t have a story or history and guess what… these videos with Swizz and Akon will be referenced in America,” he tweeted. Is Godwin Tom right? How did you stumble upon Afrobeats? Let us know in the comments!

Wizkid’s Crafty ‘Money & Love’ Video Uses The Arts To Appreciate The Finer Things

Wizkid postponed his More Love, Less Ego Tour to this fall, and at least in the world of his new “Money & Love” video, he’s using his unexpected down time to get even more in touch with his artistic side.

The three-minute visual dropped yesterday, March 29. It begins with Wizkid posted up on a vintage car, admiring a beautiful woman. Once the beat drops, Wizkid appears shirtless and laser-focused on painting. Underneath all of his paints is a magazine titled The People’s News with the headline, “Frustration, credibility doubts as election results trickle days after.”

As Wizkid continues to paint his canvas, more women have arrived around the cars to dance along to the infectious, simmering “Money & Love” soundscape. The cars multiply, day turns to night, and a luxurious night ensues at a pristine mansion. The end of the video reveals that Wizkid has painted a nude woman.

“Money & Love” is the opening track on Wizkid’s More Love, Less Ego album from last November.

Wizkid’s fifth album More Love, Less Ego is just as much of a worldwide message as it is another impressive addition to his discography. Through its 13 songs, Wizkid sought to showcase the many sides of love and how beautiful it can be at its peak,” Uproxx wrote while naming the album among 2022’s Best Afrobeats Albums, also noting, “What makes More Love, Less Ego more impressive is that the calls for love are indirect. Wizkid’s own endeavors in romance are meant to inspire. We watch from afar and desire for something similar in our day-to-day lives. Now, that’s the magic of Wizkid.”

Watch that sentiment flourish in the “Money & Love” video above.

Wizkid will be on hand at the largest exhibition of one of the fastest-expanding genres in the world, Afro Nation. Afro Nation takes the next step with Afro Nation Miami 2023, its first festival in the continental United States, after a string of lucrative events in Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The forthcoming Afro Nation festival in Miami will feature the greatest in Afrobeats, dancehall, hip-hop, amapiano, and other Black-led musical genres, just like previous Afro Nation gatherings. Afro Nation Miami arrives at LoanDepot Park on May 27 and 28, 2023, headlined by Afrobeats royalty Burna Boy and WizKid and showcasing a potent array of performers from Africa, the Caribbean, and around the world.

The impressive lineup of Afro Nation Miami showcases the breadth and power of international Black music. Burgeoning Nigerian superstars Rema and Asake, dancehall icon Beenie Man, rising African sensations CKay, BNXN, and Black Sherif, French rapper Franglish, and many others are scheduled to perform at the inaugural Miami event. Around More Love, Less Ego‘s November release, Wizkid announced a 2023 North American tour. The More Love, Less Ego Tour was scheduled to begin on Friday, March 3, at Houston’s Toyota Center and end on April 7 at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles. But today, March 1, he confirmed a postponement.
